Nature Finds a Way: Steven Spielberg's Jurassic Park This week Ibrahim & I close out the month with a fan favorite, a ground-breaking special effects extravaganza, the emergence of a new cinematic tool, and a hint at the cinematic world to come. This week we close out our look at blockbusters bookending Steven Spielberg's 1975 Jaws with his 1993 look at Jaws on land - Jurassic Park. This was a fun time looking back on a classic and examining how it changed the face of filmmaking. There's a whole lot to cover here - Mr. Chavez's fascination with the film, its role in Spielberg's filmography, the relationship to Jaws, and the ushering in of CGI as a mainstay of filmmaking. We discuss all of this as well as the performances of Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Sir Richard Attenborough, Wayne Kramer, Samuel L. Jackson, and - of course - Jeff Goldblum. It's a fun talk. Take a listen. As always, we can be reached at gondoramos@yahoo.com. SIDE HUSTLE 12: RICHARD ATTENBOROUGH AIN'T NO DUMMYOnly four episodes left in our epic season ten, talking side hustles. While we mostly have discussed directors better known as actors, this week we talk Richard Attenborough, who, if not for Jurassic Park, would probably be better known as a director today. But he was a great actor! And not just when playing billionaire softy grandpas that accidentally upturn the biological order of an entire planet because he wanted his grandkids to have cuddly raptors. He was legitimately a great actor. BRIGHTON ROCK (1948) is the first of two movies based on books with scripts credited to the author of the books themselves, and not some schmuck (this one is by Graham Greene. Directed by John Boulting, Rock has Attenborough in one of his greatest roles as Pinkie Brown, a nasty hood on the rise in the titular town of Brighton between world wars. It's a fairly grim film with Attenborough seething malice at nearly every turn. He's so good! MAGIC (1978) was a bit of a breather for Attenborough, the director, as he worked to get his passion project, a tiny indie film no one ever saw called GANDHI, made and re-teamed with producer Joseph E. Levine and author/screenwriter William Goldman, both of whom worked with Attenborough on 1977's epic A BRIDGE TOO FAR, for something quite small by comparison, a thriller about a magician who mysteriously rises to fame once he brings a dummy, named Fats, into his act and then decamps to his old hometown right before his big breakthrough to stalk a high school crush. The magician, Corky, is played by Anthony Hopkins and the crush by a dressed down Ann-Margret. Fats generally steals the show as things go from creepy to violent. It's great! Co-host Ken read the book and spills on all the changes made from page to screen (spoiler: not much). Ken and Thomas discuss the rest of Attenborough's career as one of the few great actors who moved away successfully from acting to be full time great directors. Bonus: Fats joins us!THEME SONG BY: WEIRD A.I.Email: thegoodthepodandtheugly@gmail.comFacebook: https://m.facebook.com/TGTPTUInstagram: https://instagram.com/thegoodthepodandtheugly?igshid=um92md09kjg0Twitter: https://twitter.com/thegoodthepoda1YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6mI2plrgJu-TB95bbJCW-gBuzzsprout: https://thegoodthepodandtheugly.buzzsprout.com/Letterboxd (follow us!):Ken: Ken KoralJack: jackk1096

"The Ventriloquist's Splintered Hand." Matthew and Quinton know a thing or two about dummies, making them the perfect pair to discuss Sir Richard Attenborough's unsung gem from 1978: Magic. Starring Sir Anthony Hopkins, Ann-Margaret, and Burgess Meredith, this psychological thriller, based on William Goldman's novel of the same name, involves a fractured mind, a dummy named Fats, and a few dead bodies. Quinton provides all the behind-the-scenes info, while Matthew takes you through the history of ventriloquism, what seems like an endless list of period-appropriate serial killers, and the landscape of 1970s entertainment. Join us to learn more about the movie that prepared Attenborough to make his 1982 epic, Gandhi.
Well, here we are again. It's World War II. Another three-hour war film, another big ensemble cast! In some ways a follow-up to The Longest Day (also written by Cornelius Ryan), this time in color, this film depicts Operation Market Garden, which followed the Normandy Landings in September 1944. The Allies dropped forces from the First Allied Airborne Army into the Netherlands, where they would assault and hold several bridges and wait for XXX Corps of the British Second Army to bring in armor and supplies to continue the push into Northern Germany. Directed by Sir Richard Attenborough, with huge names in the cast like Sean Connery, Laurence Olivier, Michael Caine, Robert Redford, and many more, this film featured an actual paradrop of over 1000 troops, with on-location filming in the Netherlands. So, what did we think of this one? It's our first film featuring Gene Hackman, and he plays a Polish General! Which one of us will have the hot take? Join us and find out! This week we continue our "Meet the Nun" series with Mother Iliana! Mother Iliana talks about suffering and sickness, and how we encounter God in our suffering. She also talks about visiting the sick and how allowing others to visit you when you're sick helps them fulfill Jesus' command to visit the sick.Mother Iliana wrote a blog post about her reactions to the war in Ukraine and recognizing that Jesus is with her and the people in Ukraine. A jolly old eccentric billionaire has created the world's most astounding theme park, filled with living, breathing, roaring, snorting dinosaurs. It's the movie that brought Dinosaurs into the modern age, and brought mainstream Hollywood films into the CGI age. Now nearly 30 years old, Jurassic Park is a film that captured the attention and the imagination of a generation, and spawned a franchise that still boasts a single continuity to this day. Directed by Steven Spielberg and starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Samuel L. Jackson, Wayne Knight, and Sir Richard Attenborough; this dinosaur adventure turned clone-a-saurus horror has become the gold standard for special effects, book to movie adaptations, and one of the most terrifying movie villains to grace the big screen. Christmas arrives at The Good, The Bad and The Remake offices for real this time, as we watch the two Miracle on 34th Street films. The original, directed in 1947 by George Seaton, is something of a classic, brimming with festive wonder and cheer, as well as getting properly stuck in to questions of mental health, commercialism and politics. There are also thoroughly endearing turns from Edmund Gwenn as Kris Kringle and young Natalie Wood as the girl who doesn't believe in santa. If you only watch one Christmas film this year, The GBR team recommend you make it this one. However, the 1994 remake - overseen by John 'Home Alone' Hughes - is probably even better known and stars young Mara Wilson in the Natalie Wood role, Sir Richard Attenborough is perfectly cast in the Kris Kringle role and then there's the debate-stirring Dylan McDermott in a rather fetching sweater. There's no question of the film's sweetness and sentimental charms, but can it hold a christingle candle to the earlier film? More importantly, can it join the rarified ranks of the films that have earned a Remazing rating? What links Gandhi, Dangerous Liaisons, Groundhog Day, My Name Is Joe, The Fisher King and You've Got Mail? The answer is composer George Fenton, who scored all of these films as well as a hundred-odd more! He also provided the music for several big budget BBC wildlife documentaries, including as The Trials Of Life and Blue Planet and Planet Earth. So we are indeed in esteemed company on our latest episode of Soundtracking, the original podcast about screen music. We caught up with George at his wonderful home on the release of Red Joan, a British spy drama starring Sophie Cookson and Judi Dench. As usual, you'll hear George's work from this and other movies throughout the conversation, as well his experiences of collaborating with Stephen Frears, Terry Gilliam, Ken Loach, Nora Ephron and Sir Richard Attenborough.
Book Vs Movie “Jurassic Park” The 1990 nonfiction by the legendary author, director, and producer Michael Crichton Vs the 1993 Steven Spielberg Blockbuster Film Plus, The Margos pick their "Top 5 Steven Spielberg Properties" Bring on the special, practical effects (with little CGI, please) because the Margos redo one of their more polarizing takes on a project created by two world-class geniuses--Michael Crichton and his good friend Steven Spielberg. Amazingly, Crichton came up with the original concept in the early 1980s and it took several drafts to create the novel that would be known as Jurassic Park. At the time (1990) it was a publishing sensation, and Steven Spielberg was smart enough to grab the rights at $2 million. The film, which came out in June 1993, was a mega hit right from the start and it remains a cable TV staple to this day. So between the book and movie--which did the Margos like better? Guys--it ain’t even close here. Check out the link below to hear our take on both. Also, in this replay ep, the Margos the Margos pick their "Top 5 Steven Spielberg Productions" with the kicker being--they have not been covered on our show yet. In this ep the Margos discuss : The fascinating life story of Michael Crichton The friendship between him and director Steven Spielberg The annoying kids featured in the book (Ugh--the dialog is brutal!) The cast of the movie including Laura Dern, Sam Neill, Jeff Goldblum and Sir Richard Attenborough. The box office records the movie broke Plus, tons of trivia and tidbits Clips Featured: News clip from KTVU-TV (San Francisco) the day the movie opened Jurassic Park trailer The first sight of the dinosaurs “Lexi” (Ariana Richards) and “Tim” (Joseph Mozello) meet the T-Rex “The blood-sucking lawyer (Martin Ferrero) approves” The kids in the kitchen with the Raptors (the importance of sound design in this film) Outro Music “Jurassic Park Theme” John Williams Book Vs. In the final episode from our ScreenTalks Archive, Sir Richard Attenborough talks to Quentin Falk about the film adaptation of Graham Greene’s novel, 'Brighton Rock'. He reveals what motivated him to move behind the lens, directing hits like 'Oh What A Lovely War' and 'Gandhi'. And he shares failsafe advice given by David Lean on the set of his very first feature, 'In Which We Serve'. When Attenborough died in 2014, at the age of 90, he’d amassed an extraordinary range of cinematic experiences, both in Britain and Hollywood. And it’s the benefit of all this filmic wisdom that you’re about to hear… See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The song I have sent you this week is called “DooWop Days” and reminds us of the vocal groups past and present who produce this great style of music. It began in the States with street corner groups singing acapella and progressed into the rock and roll scene….it is similar to a rocky version of “barbershop”….it is a style I have always liked with those wonderful multi voice arrangements…..I’ve sent it because this week I got an Email from a guy called George Galfo who is the only original surviving member of The Mystics and thanked me for including his band in the song. The Mystics had a massive hit in the 50’s with a song called “Hushabye” which is still one of my favourites to this day…so much so I include their riff at the end of the song….the group are still performing and he told me they are soon off to Italy to do a DooWop concert……..that’s the power of the internet and it made my day. And I’d like to say hello to my mate Stevie Davies who plays bass and sings at our wednesday night jam sessions…great player and singer and great guy…and listens in. 2.Still on the music scene I’m not a massive fan of rap but I do like the visual of some of these guys….I saw P.Diddy on a chat show and he was undoubtedly the coolest dude I have ever seen. Last week Ice Cube was on The Graham Norton Show and was asked what he thought of the boycott of the Oscars by black actors….he said he couldn’t care less as he performs to his fans and it is immaterial what some so called academy thinks…and added that some of these stars need to get over themselves…..cool or what !!!....now THIS is sense !! Before they all scream “racist” maybe…just maybe…there are better actors than them? 3.There is a major scam going on in this country whereby cars deliberately stop and let the one behind crash into them…thus creating claims for whiplash etc….even BUSES are in on it. To me the answer is quite simple…false claims should receive a jail sentence…it’s fraud…simple as that….and anyone involved in the organisation of these scams should be jailed and receive a life ban from driving. ….including SOLICITORS who are a scab on society…..having said that if you drive safely you should leave enough room to slow down before going into the back of someone. A guy went into the back of me a few years back…..he hit my towbar and wrote the front of his car off….mine had no damage at all… so I helped him get out of the traffic and called it a day….I didn’t claim whiplash because I didn’t have it and I am not a lying grabbing piece of low life….the chap called at my house a week later with a bunch of flowers and a bottle of wine. 4.Also the media make matters worse with their one sided reporting…they had a feature regarding a lady who was “sitting at the traffic lights” and decided to peel a banana…she was seen by an unmarked police car and fined “£140” for not being in control of the vehicle…they had the lady in the studio who said she was actually moving but still in first gear…and had she not pleaded guilty it could have cost her over a grand. SHE WAS DRIVING WITH BOTH HANDS OFF THE WHEEL!!!..the moaners and wingers would be the first to complain if one of their family had been injured on their pushbike by someone peeling a banana If this is national news it’s time to call it a day. 5.I did a bit of baby sitting for my son last weekend and he sorted us out with “Jurassic Park”…..in 3D!!....it was unbelievable….more so in that it hadn’t originally been made in 3D….it was all done with modern technology….put the glasses on and there you are standing next to Sir Richard Attenborough…..it does make you wonder how far technology is yet to advance….

James Frain plays billionaire Peter Fleming, The Cape's (David Lyons) nemesis, who moonlights as the twisted killer, Chess, on “The Cape.” NBC's new series THE CAPE, premieres January 9th. Frain received his big break while studying in London, when Sir Richard Attenborough cast him in his first feature, “Shadowlands,” opposite Sir Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger.
