CTO Series: Sergey's Leadership Insights—Bridging Innovation and Strategy as CTO of CrateDB In this BONUS episode, we sit down with Sergey, the forward-thinking CTO of CrateDB, to unpack his journey from Nokia to CrateDB and his leadership philosophy that blends technical expertise with strategic foresight. We dive into the key moments that shaped his career, the challenges of scaling technology in a competitive market, and how Sergey aligns his team's efforts with broader business goals while staying adaptable in an ever-evolving tech landscape. The Defining Moment in Sergey's Leadership Journey “Being a cheerleader, servant, and strategist for your team creates an environment where innovation can thrive.” Sergey shares how working at Nokia with an inspiring people manager, Sotiris, influenced his leadership approach. Sotiris embodied servant leadership and made strategic thinking a team-wide responsibility. Sergey reflects on how this mindset helped him approach his current role at CrateDB, emphasizing the importance of not only building great products but ensuring they resonate in the market through thoughtful sales and marketing alignment. “The best leaders help their teams see what's next—not just solve today's problems.” Navigating Product-Market Fit for Technical Products “For technical products, adoption is not just about features—it's about connecting with both developers and decision-makers.” Sergey breaks down the challenges of achieving product-market fit for developer-centric solutions like CrateDB. He explains the dual approach of engaging both top-down decision-makers, like CTOs, and bottom-up developer communities. By drawing from his startup experience, Sergey underscores the importance of building trust and delivering a developer experience that wins over early adopters. “The real challenge is bridging the gap between leadership adoption and the developers who use the product every day.” The Impact of AI on Developer Experience “AI's true transformation lies in how it enhances the products we already use, often invisibly.” When asked about AI's current role, Sergey reflects on the potential of AI-powered tools to transform workflows over the next few years. While not yet life-changing for his daily routine, he anticipates that AI's influence will soon be felt through the optimization of background processes in everyday tools and databases. “The future isn't about flashy AI features—it's about smarter tools that simplify complex workflows.” Aligning Tech Strategy with Business Goals “A strong strategy needs to be a story that teams can rally around and imagine themselves in.” Sergey details CrateDB's unique approach to strategic planning, inspired by open-source RFCs (Request for Comments). Instead of rigid OKRs, they craft stories that clarify priorities and invite feedback from across the organization. He highlights the importance of quarterly check-ins and building checkpoints to validate assumptions along the way. Key tips in this segment: Document the assumptions behind the strategy. Break initiatives into steps to test their feasibility. Avoid deadline-driven development; focus on value-driven milestones. Fostering Collaboration Between Tech and Business Units “Collaboration thrives when both sides understand the trade-offs involved in strategic decisions.” Sergey explains how collaboration between engineering and business leaders is fostered through transparency and communication. Product managers and engineering leads play key roles in advocating for priorities and ensuring alignment across teams. Sergey emphasizes the value of making trade-offs explicit to avoid silos. “The best partnerships between tech and business come from mutual understanding—not just of goals, but of constraints.” Staying Ahead with Strategic Roadmapping “A good strategy diagnoses the situation, sets guiding policies, and outlines coherent actions.” Sergey highlights the importance of competitive intelligence in staying ahead of market trends without reacting impulsively. In the world of databases, long adoption cycles offer the advantage of thoughtful strategic planning. He references the book Good Strategy/Bad Strategy and describes how CrateDB maintains an evergreen list of initiatives that can be prioritized when needed. “Don't just chase trends—create a strategy that withstands change by focusing on long-term coherence.” Overcoming the Challenges of the CTO Role “The CTO role is often ambiguous—define it based on your organization's needs.” Sergey candidly discusses the challenge of imposter syndrome and the ambiguity that comes with the CTO title. He outlines two common archetypes: the technical expert versus the team builder and cultural leader. He stresses the importance of adjusting the role to the organization's maturity and goals. “Your leadership role isn't static—adapt your approach to meet your organization where it is.” Books That Shaped Sergey's Leadership Approach “Most tech problems are people problems disguised as engineering issues.” Sergey shares the books that influenced his leadership style: Peopleware by Tom DeMarco: Reinforces the idea that technical challenges often stem from team dynamics. Drive by Daniel Pink: Highlights the importance of autonomy, mastery, and purpose in motivating teams. Good to Great by Jim Collins: Explores what makes some companies thrive while others stagnate. About Sergey Gerasimenko Sergey is the innovative CTO of CrateDB, leading the charge in real-time analytics and hybrid search. Previously, he was VP of Engineering at MongoDB, shaping the edge device strategy, and at Realm, a leading open-source mobile/embedded database acquired by MongoDB in 2019. With a career spanning groundbreaking roles at Brainly and Nokia, Sergey co-founded two companies and holds a patent. His leadership continues to push the boundaries of tech innovation. Obrigado!

The Greek gods of symphonic death metal Septicflesh have blessed us mortals with a triumphant new album titled Modern Primitive. The 11th studio album in the band's discography and they continue to perfect their sound with each release. For 32 years these guys have been crushing the metal scene! Two months ago, the band released their first single for the new CD called "Heirophant". It begins with the most bombastic mix of symphony orchestra with metal that the band can muster. The chorus of the song which features the very nasally singing of Sotiris Vayenas. Spiros Antoniou, the harsh vocalist and bassist, is still every bit as monstrous as he has ever been. The next music video that Nuclear Blast Records uploaded was the song called "Nueromancer". Sotiris isn't just the clean singer, he is also the acoustic guitar player. The first thing we see in that music video is him playing the instrument for a calm and soothing intro to yet another powerful song. After a few weeks, a lyrical video was added to the record label's channel. It was for their new song "A Desert Throne". The song starts out with the sound of a lovely choir before diving straight into pure metal madness. After a few seconds the symphony orchestra works its way into the groovy guitar riff becoming one angelic sound; the demonic vocals make it an unholy fusion. This would be a great opportunity to point out how audible the bass is throughout the entirety of this album and the albums before it. If any album from these guys can hold a candle to 2017's Codex Omega its this one. On the day of this album's release which was on May 20th, Septicflesh had put out a 2nd lyrical video for their final single "Coming Storm". After the one minute mark the music abruptly stops so we can hear the eerie yet beautiful singing of what sounds like a siren. This goes on for a few seconds before plunging back into the chaos. Drummer Kerim Lechner delivers another outstanding performance in this track; he is nothing short of fantastic. I also love the use of brass and wood instruments in this song. You can really hear those horns braying alongside the violins in some parts. The choir building up Sotiris appearance towards the end. It is truly difficult to pick a favorite song on this new album but this song is definitely one of my favorites. I'm going to shine some light on the addition to the group. Psychon is the newest guitarist who has been added as a member of Septicflesh since 2018. He is doing very well from what I can hear. He plays perfectly in sync with the main guitarist/keyboard player Christos Antoniou. Yes, Christos and Spiros are brothers and are the two founding members of the band. Now let's talk about the other songs on the record. Let's start with "The Collector". If you had your eyes closed during the song's intro, you could probably mentally teleport yourself to the most desolate sands on the sandy outskirts of ancient Egypt. That type of middle Eastern oriental music will take you to cultured civilizations along the country. It reminds me a lot of what Karl Sanders from Nile does. "Self-Eater" is an angry song but it maintains a steady balance of aggression with a small choir of children singing. The ending of the song will give you chills. "Modern Primitives" is guaranteed to get stuck in your head. You will find yourself singing the words "modern primitive" while at work. "Psychohistory" is another catchy one but only because the 2nd half of the song is only slightly repetitive but not enough to drive you crazy. And finally, we have the last song titled "A Dreadful Muse". The last song happens to be my least favorite song of this otherwise spectacular album as there seemed to be no real memorable qualities about the music. Septicflesh are one of my all-time favorite bands. Modern Primitives isn't my favorite album but it's at least in my top 5 of their releases. With that being said, I'm going to rate this near masterpiece as a fair 9.9 out of 10.

For more than three decades, Greek metal outfit Septicflesh have ruled the death metal roost internationally. With a wealth of experience, coupled with a nations history to draw from, Septicflesh are preparing to release their eleventh album – and first for Nuclear Blast Records – titled Modern Primitive on May 20.Always thought provoking with their music, Septicflesh have outdone even themselves on Modern Primitive, with founding member Sotiris Vayenas joining HEAVY to discuss the album."This is the longest creation time we have had for an album,” he measured, “because when we started recordings the whole situation with the pandemic started. It's an album that has matured from the first phase to the last. Also, we had the chance to try a lot of different ideas with our compositions and make some advanced stuff, like "Coming Storm", for example. Of course, the sound is really distinct. It's the sound we have built after all of those years working together, so we get on the one hand a really heavy, groovy sound and on the other hand we have a lot of symphonic elements and stuff that provides emotion and atmosphere."In the full interview, Sotiris talks more about the songs on Modern Primitive, the thought and planning that goes into getting the atmospherics right, the title and how it sets the tone for the album, the cover artwork and what it signifies, touring plans and more.
For the latest episode of The Appropriate Omnivore, Aaron welcomes on Big Picture Foods co-founder Sotiris Kitrilakis. Big Pictures produces on Aaron's favorite things to eat — olives. Sotiris tells the stories of how each of the different types of olives go through the traditional fermentation process. In addition to being truly fermented, the olives are also grown using regenerative agriculture. More recently Big Picture Foods has expanded into regenerative and fermented peppers and capers, two foods also long overdue. Plus Sotiris tells the listeners what other products Big Picture Foods has in development.

Set in an unnamed French-speaking country and filmed in Algiers to avoid state interference, Z is a thinly-fictionalized but clinically detailed account of the 1963 murder of Grigoris Lambrakis (Yves Montand), a popular democratic politician set up by the country's military establishment to be murdered by right-wing extremists, and the dogged, incorruptible magistrate (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who connects the dots of the incident and attempts to bring the guilty to justice, leading to one of the greatest endings in cinema. We discuss the real life story of the assassination of Lambrakis, the bravery of Costa-Gavras to fuse politics and entertainment to expose the crimes of the Greek military regime to a worldwide audience, the attempts to suppress the film, and how the shocking story told in Zstill resonates today, in Greece and elsewhere. Jason Sotiris is the founder of the award winning charity, ‘Supertee' which provides superhero costumes for sick kids to wear in hospital.Beginning as a tradie, a devastating turn of events with his daughter Angela, made Jason decide to pack up the tools and make kids' dreams come true.Jason's daughter Angela was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2013, raising Jason to absolutely ‘useless' when a tangle of wires and tubes left him unable to change her clothes without difficulty and discomfort for Angela. In 2018 Jason launched Supertees.‘Supertees' fasten with plastic buttons to bypass wires and tubes, and can safely be worn in scanning machines. The innovative design provides an easier way for parents and hospital staff to change, access and bypass medical lines, without impacting the child's dignity.Over the past 3 years, 7,000 costumes have been given to sick Australian kids with more than 8,000 still to be delivered.Socials:Website: https://www.supertee.org.au/FB: Supertee @theSuperteeChartityInsta: the_supertee_project @SuperteeLinkedIn: Jason SotirisMentions:The Living Room (Channel 10) Royal Children's Hospital Life is beautiful (Movie) - Roberto Benigni‘Man in the arena' (poem) - Theodore RooseveltEnjoy the visual here on Youtube

Financials have stayed in great shape throughout the pandemic. Portfolio manager of the Fidelity Global Financial Services Fund, Sotiris Boutsis, speaks with host Pamela Ritchie about why investors might want to consider financial services in their portfolios. The Federal Reserve's policy has shifted to an outcome-oriented policy which has affected financials positively. He notes that real rates are negative right now versus very positive over the last ten years. Sotiris also shares his thoughts on the Fed's inflation target. He says there is a need to be monitoring inflation expectations stating that if the 5-year rate is falling more and more, the Fed could react with additional action. Additionally, Sotiris discusses his fund positioning. He is playing to secular themes, such as retirement and payments, and on the cyclical side, he is moving to good quality companies with decent growth. Recorded on June 23, 2021.

After more than a decade of austerity measures, recession, and unemployment, Athens has seen a big shift in the makeup of homeownership, a shift that comes at the expense of residents and that benefits big business. In a country where homeownership has historically been high, more and more properties have gone into foreclosure and been sold to nameless buyers as a result of Greece’s financial crisis. Public information on who owns what is not available in Greece, but it’s no secret that big foreign corporations have been buying up entire apartment blocks to turn them into short-term holiday lets, effectively displacing many long-term residents. The Filmmaker and the Advocate sit down with Sotiris Sideris, data journalist and co-founder of Athens Live Lab, to discuss who is buying up all the foreclosed properties in Athens and what is happening to the city as a result. Using data scraping, Sotiris has discovered that Greeks are being pushed out - their homes are being auctioned off to investors who want to cash in on Greece's allure as one of the hottest tourist destinations in the world. One low-income community has been basically emptied out of locals, replaced by those wanting a glimpse of the Acropolis and a night in the Plaka. Sotiris hopes his research on private property auctions will shed light on the growing problem and perhaps provide the first steps needed in turning things around.Checkout Athens Live and Sotiris' amazing work mapping Who Owns The City! Mr. Kostas Kalemis is the Refugee Education Coordinator in the camp of Malakasa, a small town 30 kilometers north of Athens. He explains why education is the most powerful tool to realize sustainable development and how it can eliminate hate speech towards refugees. Mr. Kalemis has been working in the camp as a representative of the Greek Ministry of Education for the last two years. He is responsible for the educational programs for all students from 4 to 14 years old. Sotiris met him in his office, which is actually a container inside the camp, and they discussed the role of education in establishing relationships supportive to integration, the lack of translators in Greek schools, and how education can help eliminate hate speech towards refugees. Education itself is an empowering right and one of the most powerful tools by which economically and socially marginalized children and adults can lift themselves out of poverty and participate fully in society. The right to education is a fundamental human right which is respected, protected and promoted by the Greek state. According to European and national law, every child, has the right to education and, most importantly, any refugee child. In March 2016, the Greek Ministry of Education Research & Religious Affairs took the initiative to prepare a plan for the integration of refugee children into education in order to contribute to their wider social integration. They established three committees for the support of refugee children: - The Committee for the Support of Refugee Children headed by the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education Research & Religious Affairs and 14 staff members from the Ministry of Education Research & Religious Affairs. - The Scientific Committee (SC) consisting of 26 professors and scientific associates from Greek Higher Education Institutions, working closely with the Secretary General of the Ministry of Education Research & Religious Affairs. - The Art Committee (AC) consisting of 9 members who are artists and professors related to the art departments of HE Institutions.
Meet Morteza, an 18-year-old refugee from Afghanistan. From Izmir he travelled to Samos island, to finally reach the Greek mainland. On this episode he tells Sotiris about his life in Schisto refugee camp. Morteza is in standby mode, as he is patiently waiting for his family reunification in Germany. Nevertheless, he has created a new norm for his life here. School, lessons, interpersonal relationships; situations and facts that connect him emotionally with Greece. Today, Morteza provides an inside view of Schisto Refugee Camp, the living conditions there, and the facilities they have or not. He finally likens the camp to a nest. Schisto Refugee Camp is one of the camps that were officially established by ministerial decree as 'Temporary Reception and Accommodation Settlements', under the Law 4375/2016. In the beginning, and for quite a long time, the camp's residents had to live in tents, which were gradually replaced by containers, in line with the UNHCR 'winterization' scheme. It was only in January of 2017 that those containers were equipped with air-conditioning units for heating and that a sanitation system was established to allow the use of private indoor toilets. According to the 2017 Network for Children's Rights report, titled 'Conditions in refugee camps: The case of Schisto', "substantial inadequacies, deficiencies and even large gaps in the protection, security, dignity and quality of living conditions of asylum-seekers in Greece, with children making up the largest vulnerable group affected." Read the full report here --> http://www.ddp.gr/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/SchistoReport_en.pdf
Nikos Paleologos, photo reporter with SOOC agency, explains how the media has been covering the big refugee influx and the way hate speech has re-entered the mainstream of Greek society. Nikos was there when boats full of people were arriving in Greek islands. He explains to Sotiris & Aristea the way the European and national media reacted and handled the situation. It has started as a shock for everyone. No one experienced something like that before. It was a new normality that the whole society had to cope with. News outlets as facilitators of public debate are widely considered as a strategic tool for managing the increasing diversity in society. When covering the arrivals of asylum seekers in Europe throughout 2015-2016 however, the media has played a central role in framing these events as a 'crisis'. This perspective contributed to negative and sometimes hostile attitudes amongst the public towards the newcomers.
Mo tells Sotiris about his trip from Turkey to Lesvos to Athens, applying for asylum in Greece, and how his life has changed since he left Syria. Since 2015, Europe has become a destination of choice for more than half a million asylum seekers from Syria. Mo is one of them. He left Syria in 2017, worn down by a war that, after seven years, appears to have no end in sight. On this episode, he unfolds the story of his displacement and why he can't return to his country. TELL ME MORE: In May 2018, the number of refugees and migrants in Greece stood at more than 60,000, including about 14,000 on the islands. During their journeys, refugees and migrants experience inhuman living conditions, including forced detention, violence, and even witnessing death. Due to their uncertain asylum status and limited or no access to public services, their lives have become unstable and the promise of a better future is fading away. The European Union started closing its borders to refugees and migrants in October 2015, when Hungary blocked asylum seekers from reaching Western Europe through the Balkans. Since then, Greece has become something like a reception hall for people seeking asylum in Europe. That month alone, the U.N. recorded more than 200,000 refugees and migrants crossing from Turkey to Greece - all of them bound for Western Europe.
My talk with Panagiotis Sotiris about the Greek crisis, the latest EU bailout loans, and the brutal austerity measures which are going to punish, and perpetuate an already suffering Greek economy and its people. We discuss the possibility of the Greek people creating their own systems, breaking through the fear, and becoming free and empowered.
