On this riveting episode of the Spybrary Spy podcast, British political journalist Tim Shipman is once again in conversation with David McCloskey, a former CIA analyst turned novelist, discussing his fourth and most ambitious book yet, The Persian. Departing from his CIA-rooted earlier work, McCloskey dives into the morally murky waters of the Israeli-Iranian shadow war. The novel, a high-stakes standalone thriller, follows a Mossad operation and an Iranian-born dentist-turned-reluctant-spy. They discuss the challenges of writing beyond American intelligence, the process of accessing former Mossad officers for research, the rich culture and contradictions of Iran, and the psychological complexity of agent-handler relationships. The episode also teases McCloskey's next book, the return of Artemis Proctor, and exciting developments for screen adaptations. So what is The Persian by David McCloskey all about, Shane? Kamran Esfahani, a dentist living out a dreary existence in Stockholm, agrees to spy for the Mossad after he's recruited by Arik Glitzman, the chief of a clandestine unit tasked with running targeted assassinations and sabotage inside Iran. At Glitzman's direction, Kam returns to his native Tehran and opens a dental practice there, using it as a cover for the Israeli intelligence agency. Kam proves to be a skillful asset, quietly earning money helping Glitzman smuggle weapons, run surveillance, and conduct kidnappings. But when Kam tries to recruit an Iranian widow seeking to avenge the death of her husband at the hands of the Mossad, the operation goes terribly wrong, landing him in prison under the watchful eye of a sadistic officer whom he knows only as the "General." And now, after enduring three years of torture in captivity, Kamran Esfahani sits in an interrogation room across from the General, preparing to write his final confession. Kam knows it is too late to save himself. But he has managed to keep one secret—only one—and he just might be able to save that. In this haunting thriller, careening between Tehran and Tel Aviv, Istanbul and Stockholm, David McCloskey delivers an intricate story of vengeance, deceit, and the power of love and forgiveness in a world of lies. Praise for The Persian: [The Persian] builds to high drama and twists with characters you care about.… Deep and satisfying... keeps the McCloskey traits of great tradecraft and headlong dash to the end. It proves he is a great spy writer. Tim Shipman, Spybrary and The Specator It is no spoiler to say that what David McCloskey has given us in The Persian is a tragedy—a work of spy fiction that, stripped of its technological trappings, would not have been out of place on the Athenian stage. Stephen England, Author The Persian is a novel written by someone who understands not just how espionage works, but how it feels, the waiting, the second-guessing, and the quiet moments where people realise what they've traded away to stay in the game. I applaud David for writing a standalone novel rather than the familiar waters of his Artemis Proctor series.

Rich Nuzum is head of OCIO at Franklin Templeton. He joined Franklin Templeton from Mercer where he spent more than three decades providing investment consulting advice to institutional investors. Nuzum holds an MBA in analytic finance and accounting from the University of Chicago and a bachelor's degree in mathematical sciences and mathematical economic analysis from Rice University. Rich also did graduate work in international economics at Tokyo University. Our conversation starts with Rich's upbringing and growing up with his parents as school teachers. He describes how he came upon finance as a career, and the impact of the time spent in Tokyo studying economics, one of the most difficult academic paths he has ever navigated. We speak then about his various phases in investment consulting which saw some movements to head up different areas, some planned and some serendipitous. We turn then to the concept of Outsourced CIO (OCIO) serviced and how this service offering has evolved in recent years – often to be less of a complete substitute for an investment team and more of an adjacent set of complementary skills at times. We discuss the global experience of OCIO adoption and where the future integration of this might lie. This podcast is kindly sponsored by Evanston Capital and Alvine Capital.

Here we are at Snowball in Stockholm, finally sitting down to record this long-awaited episode with Kristýna Krejzlová. Kristýna is a swing and blues dancer from Brno in the Czech Republic, a growing teacher, and a fresh trombone player who is falling even deeper in love with the music and community around these dances. She shares how discovering Lindy Hop just weeks after being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis gave her one hour every week where she felt “normal” and fully alive again - and how dance still helps her stay active, present, and connected. We talk about feeling most yourself on the dance floor, blues rooms, secret Herräng parties with dim lights and colorful dots on the ceiling, and why “never stop dancing” might be the best advice of all.Kristýna also reflects on sensitivity and that “sixth sense” dancers develop, plus how the Brno scene works to honor the roots of the dance through culture-focused teaching, talks, and even a little dance library. And, of course, she passes on a beautiful chain question for the next guest: what is your very first memory of dancing Lindy Hop, blues, or another swing dance? What's yours?Subscribe & ReviewFollow the podcast and leave a review to help me grow
Today we get LOUD with Maria Algren, co-founder of Common Clouds, Scandinavia's first acne-positive skincare brand. Based in Stockholm, Common Clouds was built to challenge traditional beauty standards and the idea that acne needs to be “fixed.” In this conversation, Maria shares her personal journey with acne, rosacea, and skin shame, and how those experiences—along with years spent working inside the beauty industry—sparked the creation of a brand rooted in transparency, education, and compassion. We dive into how beauty standards differ between Scandinavia, North America, and Asia, why “natural beauty” can sometimes create even more pressure, and how acne stigma continues to affect mental health across generations. Maria also opens up about starting a fully female-led company, building skincare products without marketing fluff, and setting realistic expectations around what skincare can—and cannot—do. This episode is a reminder that skincare goes far beyond the surface, and that confidence, worth, and purpose aren't defined by clear skin. Hi Sleepy.Tonight I'm talking from a room that's almost been swallowed by snow. Somewhere outside, Stockholm is doing what it does when it remembers winter. From there my thoughts drift to old films, Hollywood habits, guns that always need to be looked at, villains who talk to aquariums, and why people in movies never behave like real humans in danger. We wander through The Mission, bad dialogue, good music, gender clichés, bare feet in forests, and that strange moment when you can almost see the writer's room through the screen. It's a slow, slightly irritated, slightly amused journey toward falling asleep. No conclusions. Just observations, detours, and a few unnecessary goats.Let this be background noise while you drift off to sleep. Or stay awake and argue with me in your head. Both are fine.Sleep Tight!More about Henrik, click here: https://linktr.ee/Henrikstahl Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Kirsty Gibson is an investment manager at Baillie Gifford, where she has spent over 13 years. She is currently focused in particular on investing in US equities with a growth orientation. Our conversation starts with Kirsty's roots and her training in classical ballet. This was an unusual yet direct route to Baillie Gifford as she first came across the firm when she saw that they were sponsoring a ballet performance they had attended – evidence that sponsorship of similar events does in fact get noticed and yield returns! We move then to her investment beliefs, her Masters in carbon management and what she derived from it and her approach to stock picking. We dive into the cultural aspects that make a firm a rewarding place to work, and about the mindset needed to thrive as an active equity manager today. This podcast is kindly sponsored by Evanston Capital and Alvine Capital. For over 20 years Evanston Capital has had a key focus in identifying early-stage investment managers it believes are capable of generating long-term, value-added returns in complex, innovative strategy areas. Alvine Capital is a specialist investment manager and placement boutique with a particular focus on alternative assets with significant presence in London and Stockholm.

A year after congestion pricing took effect in Manhattan, the political uproar has largely faded even as the tolls remain in place. Traffic is down, transit use is up, and the dire warnings that once surrounded the program have quieted. WNYC transportation reporter Stephen Nessen looks back at how New Yorkers have adjusted, why backlash softened over time, and how the city's experience fits into a global pattern seen in places like Stockholm and London.
Hi Sleepy.Tonight I sit in my living room while Stockholm freezes quietly outside. The moon keeps doing what it's always done, showing us the same face it showed dinosaurs, emperors, saints, and people who never slept well either. I drift between craters, old police non-events, Antarctica fantasies, places I'll never go, and the strange comfort of shelters in hostile worlds. Nothing is planned. Nothing is edited. English stumbles along with me.You don't have to listen. You can just stay. Maybe you'll drift off. Maybe not. Either way, the moon doesn't mind.Sleep Tight!More about Henrik, click here: https://linktr.ee/Henrikstahl Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
The holiday season often shines a spotlight on the heavy burden dental practice owners carry. Casey Hiers and Jarrod Bridgeman dive into why so many clinicians fall into a "Stockholm syndrome" mindset—feeling trapped by the belief that they must handle every business and clinical task themselves. The guys discuss how a lack of delegation leads to burnout and why being vulnerable about your professional challenges is actually the first step toward true profitability. They also challenge you to audit your inner circle: Is your CPA or accountant actually helping you grow, or are they just along for the ride?Forget vague resolutions. This episode focuses on strategic planning and making the incremental changes necessary to reclaim your time and boost your bottom line in the new year.Upcoming Tour Dates: Go to our EVENTS page for infoFacebook: Four Quadrants AdvisoryInstagram: @fourquadrantsadvisoryLinkedIn: Four Quadrants Advisory

Men mitt i idyllen smyger sig frågorna in. Tonight's guest is Fred, calling in from Sweden. He's the researcher and writer behind the book Northern Lights: High Strangeness in Sweden. Fred walks us through a series of his experiences scattered across Sweden and Norway, a violent interaction with an invisible force on a bridge in Stockholm, a shadow figure leaning out from behind a tree no person could hide behind, a perfect circle of ground light in Märsta, and the haunting footsteps that circled a cabin in a Norwegian valley that scared Fred before dawn. He also shares stories of the odd little man who appeared during his youth, in the forest, along the roadside, and even in a shop, always looking at him, never speaking.More information on this episode on the podcast website:https://ufochroniclespodcast.com/ep-366-high-strangeness-in-sweden/Hidden Cults (Promo)It is a documentary-style podcast that digs deep into the world's most extreme, elusive, and explosive fringe groups. Using the metaphor of time travel, Michael explores the inner journey described by the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th limbs of yoga. Rather than traveling through years or lifetimes, this “time travel” moves inward, through memory, identity, awareness, and ultimately into stillness. In this talk, Michael offers a clear and grounded exploration of the self, the ego, and the subtle emptiness of the things we cling to for stability. He examines how personality is something we continuously construct, often in an attempt to create a sense of permanence in a world that is constantly changing. At the core of this construction is a quiet resistance to impermanence: a desire to fix what is, by nature, fluid. Through the lens of yogic philosophy, the conversation invites listeners to notice how attention, concentration, meditation, and absorption gradually loosen our grip on rigid identities. What emerges is not loss, but freedom, a deeper understanding that we don't need to solidify ourselves in order to exist meaningfully. Instead, by learning to rest in change, we begin to experience time, self, and awareness in a completely different way. Recorded in Stockholm on September 9, 2016. The Awake in the World podcast is brought to you by the generosity of our amazing Patreon supporters, making it possible for us to keep Michael's archive of teachings available to the public. To start our second look back on 2025, we want to thank everyone who listens to our show and interacts with us to share your love of rock music. We've entered our 6th year and want to show appreciation for all of you who choose to share your rock n roll journey with us. It inspires us to keep our curiosity alive and learn more about the music we love. So thank you all. To wrap up the year we had to pay respects to the many rockers and legends we lost, including guest of the show Terry Reid. Superlungs is British Rock Royalty and we're sorry he's gone but glad we had the chance to thank him for the music. From Ace Frehley to Ozzy Osbourne and Brian Wilson to Sly Stone we lost too many this year and we took a moment to honor them. Looking back on seeing Metallica from the owner's box in Nashville to Iron Maiden in Stockholm and legends like Yes, The Black Crowes and Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening stoked the fires of some fond memories. And our 3 episode series on Live Aid at 40 really stirred some nostalgia and gave us the chance to welcome original MTV VJ Alan Hunter to the show. And we had to thank our artists and legendary guests like Metal Blade Records CEO Brian Slagel, artist Hugh Syme, Stu Allen and Scarlet Rivera. 2025 was a great year and 2026 is looking great at The Wolf!! Here we are sitting at The Snowball festival in Stockholm, and having a relaxed chat with Jennifer Thompson (from Texas) - a warm and thoughtful chat about why we dance.Jenn shares how she started Lindy Hop in 2014, how dancing became a way to connect with people and cultures without words, and why festivals feel like a universal language even when you don't share the same mother tongue. We also explore “light” as more than just a spotlight: as a metaphor for what dance illuminates in us, and how it can “light up your life.”Plus: Jenn's advice to fellow dancers: take the chances (classes, auditions, competitions, grants).Subscribe & ReviewFollow the podcast and leave a review to help me grow
The Psychology of Self-Injury: Exploring Self-Harm & Mental Health
In this episode, Dr. Christian Schmahl from Heidelberg University and Mannheim, Germany, answers a listener's question and talks about his experimental research assessing how seeing blood affects heart rate and arousal among both those who engage in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and those who don't. He also shares insights into the role of self and blood in ritual and nonritual self-injury, including examples from different cultures about how they may interpret blood differently in the context of self-harm and even trance-like states. To learn more about Dr. Schmahl and his work, visit here. If you have ever opened Candy Crush over the holidays without thinking about the design decisions behind every swipe, this episode offers a rare look behind the curtain. I sit down with Abigail Rindo, Head of Creative at King, to unpack how accessibility has evolved from a well-meaning afterthought into a core creative and commercial practice inside one of the world's most recognizable gaming studios. With more than 200 million people playing King's games each month, Abigail explains why inclusive design cannot be treated as charity or compliance, but as a responsibility that directly shapes product quality, player loyalty, and long-term growth. One of the moments that really stayed with me in this conversation is the data. More than a quarter of King's global player base self identifies as having an accessibility need. Even more players benefit from accessibility features without ever labeling themselves that way. Abigail shares how adjustments like customizable audio for tinnitus, reduced flashing to limit eye strain, and subtle interaction changes can quietly transform everyday play for millions of people. These are not edge cases. They are everyday realities for a massive audience that lives with these games as part of their daily routine. We also dig into how inclusive design sparks better creativity rather than limiting it. Abigail walks me through updates to Candy Crush Soda Saga, including the "hold and drag" mechanic that allows players to preview a move before committing. Inspired by the logic of holding a chess piece before placing it, this feature emerged directly from player research around visibility, dexterity, and comfort. It is a reminder that creative constraints, when grounded in real human needs, often lead to smarter and more elegant solutions. Beyond mechanics and metrics, this conversation goes deeper into storytelling, empathy, and team culture. Abigail explains why inclusive design only works when inclusive teams are involved from the start, and how global storytelling choices help King design worlds that resonate everywhere from Stockholm to Antarctica. We also talk about live service realities, blending quantitative data about what players do with qualitative insight into why they do it, especially when a game has been evolving for more than a decade.

In the last few years, Sweden's gang wars have erupted into a brutal battlefield of shootings, bombings, and shifting allegiances even worse than the decade before. At the center is the Kurdish Fox, a shadowy figure who built his gang Foxtrot into the most formidable drug network in the entire country, all while not even living in Sweden. Using encrypted chats to recruit teenage gunmen, he sent Sweden's murder rate soaring. But when he took out his right hand man's own mother, it led to a civil war the likes of which Stockholm had never seen. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Constitution Study with Host Paul Engel – Many Americans now accept federal overreach as normal, even when it violates constitutional limits. Courts assert powers they were never granted, while citizens grow dependent on unlawful federal incentives. This national complacency mirrors Stockholm syndrome, raising a troubling question: can a people remain free if they no longer defend the boundaries meant to restrain power...
