If a black hole shreds a star and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound? To find out, Dr. Charles Liu and co-host Allen Liu welcome Professor Yvette Cendes, (aka u/Andromeda321 on Reddit), a Radio Astronomer studying transient radio signals from space. As always, though, we start off with the day's joyfully cool cosmic thing, a report by the Dark Energy Survey that seems to show that the amount of dark energy originally described as the cosmological constant by Albert Einstein might in fact be variable. As Prof. Cendes explains, the data indicates that universal expansion is still accelerating but the rate might be changing. After Yvette explains what she does, and how radio astronomy works in concert with optical astronomy to deliver a more complete understanding, Chuck asks her to explain Tidal Disruption Events, or TDEs, about which she's a world expert. A TDE is when a star wanders too close to a supermassive black hole and ends up getting shredded. Yvette prefers to call them “Shredders.” Our first audience question comes from Nachama, who asks, “When will the black hole in the Milky Way eat the Sun?” The good news, according to Yvette, is that will never happen. As she explains, black holes actually don't suck any more than anything that massive would, and we're 25-30,000 light years away from Sagittarius A* – too far away to worry about. Next, Chuck asks Yvette about one of the most famous transient signals we've ever found, the so called “Wow!” signal detected in 1977 by Jerry Ehman at the now-defunct Xavier Observatory in Ohio. Because the signal looked exactly like what might be expected if it were of extraterrestrial origin, Ehman circled it on the printout and wrote, “Wow!” Unfortunately, it never repeated. The most likely explanation, according to Dr. Cendes, is that it was some sort of manmade interference, although the signal is currently being reinvestigated. Yvette recounts how she ended up ended up as a first-term professor at the University of Oregon after studying in the Netherlands and Toronto and working at Harvard. Then she answers an audience question from Yan Min, who asks, “Where is the best place in the world to study astronomy? I live in New York – Is it New York?” Unfortunately for Yankees fans, Yvette says it would most likely be Cambridge, Massachusetts thanks to Harvard, which has the biggest number of astronomers under one roof and operates the Chandra X-Ray Observatory, and M.I.T. on the other side of town if you get bored. Chuck asks Yvette what happens after a black hole shreds a star. Shredders, she explains, are rare. In our own Milky Way, they probably happen once every million years. Once a TDE is classified by optical astronomers, Yvette and her team point their radio telescopes at the tidal radius outside of the event horizon to discern the outflows weeks, months and even years after the initial event. He also asks Yvette if she has any hobbies to help her decompress from thinking about violent events in the universe. She likes to cross stitch, the “original pixel art.” Yvette shows us a cross stitch she made of the James Webb Space Telescope complex mirror, another featuring an 8-bit Mario screen with the words “What doesn't kill me makes me smaller,” and a third with objects in the Solar System. Modeling Reconstructed Images of Jets Launched by SANE Super-Eddington Accretion Flows Around SMBHs with the ngEHT by Brandon Curd et al. on Wednesday 30 November Tidal disruption events (TDEs) around super massive black holes (SMBHs) are a potential laboratory to study super-Eddington accretion disks and sometimes result in powerful jets or outflows which may shine in the radio and sub millimeter bands. In this work, we model the thermal synchrotron emission of jets from general relativistic radiation magneto-hydrodynamics (GRRMHD) simulations of a BH accretion disk/jet system which assumes the TDE resulted in a magnetized accretion disk around a BH accreting at $sim 12-25$ times the Eddington accretion rate. Through synthetic observations with the Next Generation Event Horizon Telescope (ngEHT) and an image reconstruction analysis, we demonstrate that TDE jets may provide compelling targets, within the context of the models explored in this work. In particular, we find that jets launched by a SANE super-Eddington disk around a spin $a_*=0.9$ reach the ngEHT detection threshold at large distances (up to 100 Mpc in this work). A two-temperature plasma in the jet or weaker jets, such as a spin $a_*=0$ model, requires a much closer distance as we demonstrate detection at 10 Mpc for limiting cases of $a_*=0,,mathcal{R}=1$ or $a_*=0.9,, mathcal{R}=20$. The Birth of a Relativistic Jet Following the Disruption of a Star by a Cosmological Black Hole by Dheeraj R. Pasham et al. on Wednesday 30 November A black hole can launch a powerful relativistic jet after it tidally disrupts a star. If this jet fortuitously aligns with our line of sight, the overall brightness is Doppler boosted by several orders of magnitude. Consequently, such on-axis relativistic tidal disruption events (TDEs) have the potential to unveil cosmological (redshift $z>$1) quiescent black holes and are ideal test beds to understand the radiative mechanisms operating in super-Eddington jets. Here, we present multi-wavelength (X-ray, UV, optical, and radio) observations of the optically discovered transient target at $z=1.193$. Its unusual X-ray properties, including a peak observed luminosity of $gtrsim$10$^{48}$ erg s$^{-1}$, systematic variability on timescales as short as 1000 seconds, and overall duration lasting more than 30 days in the rest-frame are traits associated with relativistic TDEs. The X-ray to radio spectral energy distributions spanning 5-50 days after discovery can be explained as synchrotron emission from a relativistic jet (radio), synchrotron self-Compton (X-rays), and thermal emission similar to that seen in low-redshift TDEs (UV/optical). Our modeling implies a beamed, highly relativistic jet akin to blazars but requires extreme matter-domination, i.e, high ratio of electron-to-magnetic field energy densities in the jet, and challenges our theoretical understanding of jets. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.16537v1
A very luminous jet from the disruption of a star by a massive black hole by Igor Andreoni et al. on Wednesday 30 November Tidal disruption events (TDEs) are bursts of electromagnetic energy released when supermassive black holes (SMBHs) at the centers of galaxies violently disrupt a star that passes too close. TDEs provide a new window to study accretion onto SMBHs; in some rare cases, this accretion leads to launching of a relativistic jet, but the necessary conditions are not fully understood. The best studied jetted TDE to date is Swift J1644+57, which was discovered in gamma-rays, but was too obscured by dust to be seen at optical wavelengths. Here we report the optical discovery of AT2022cmc, a rapidly fading source at cosmological distance (redshift z=1.19325) whose unique lightcurve transitioned into a luminous plateau within days. Observations of a bright counterpart at other wavelengths, including X-rays, sub-millimeter, and radio, supports the interpretation of AT2022cmc as a jetted TDE containing a synchrotron "afterglow", likely launched by a SMBH with spin $a gtrsim 0.3$. Using 4 years of Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) survey data, we calculate a rate of $0.02 ^{+ 0.04 }_{- 0.01 }$ Gpc$^{-3}$ yr$^{-1}$ for on-axis jetted TDEs based on the luminous, fast-fading red component, thus providing a measurement complementary to the rates derived from X-ray and radio observations. Correcting for the beaming angle effects, this rate confirms that about 1% of TDEs have relativistic jets. The Final Season Reimagined: 30 Tidal Disruption Events from the ZTF-I Survey by Erica Hammerstein et al. on Tuesday 29 November Tidal disruption events (TDEs) offer a unique way to study dormant black holes. While the number of observed TDEs has grown thanks to the emergence of wide-field surveys in the past few decades, questions regarding the nature of the observed optical, UV, and X-ray emission remain. We present a uniformly selected sample of 30 spectroscopically classified TDEs from the Zwicky Transient Facility Phase I survey operations with follow-up textit{Swift} UV and X-ray observations. Through our investigation into correlations between light curve properties, we recover a shallow positive correlation between the peak bolometric luminosity and decay timescales. We introduce a new spectroscopic class of TDE, TDE-featureless, which are characterized by featureless optical spectra. The new TDE-featureless class shows larger peak bolometric luminosities, peak blackbody temperatures, and peak blackbody radii. We examine the differences between the X-ray bright and X-ray faint populations of TDEs in this sample, finding that X-ray bright TDEs show higher peak blackbody luminosities than the X-ray faint sub-sample. This sample of optically selected TDEs is the largest sample of TDEs from a single survey yet, and the systematic discovery, classification, and follow-up of this sample allows for robust characterization of TDE properties, an important stepping stone looking forward toward the Rubin era. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2203.01461v2

Generalized equipartition method from an arbitrary viewing angle by Tatsuya Matsumoto et al. on Monday 21 November The equipartition analysis yields estimates of the radius and energy of synchrotron self-absorbed radio sources. Here we generalize this method to relativistic off-axis viewed emitters. We find that the Lorentz factor $Gamma$ and the viewing angle $theta$ cannot be determined independently but become degenerate along a trajectory of minimal energy solutions. The solutions are divided into on-axis and off-axis branches with the former reproducing the classical analysis. A relativistic source viewed off-axis can be disguised as an apparent Newtonian one. Applying this method to radio observations of several tidal disruption events (TDEs), we find that the radio flare of AT 2018hyz which was observed a few years after the optical discovery could have been produced by a relativistic off-axis jet with kinetic energy of $sim10^{53},rm erg$ that was launched around the time of discovery. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2211.10051v1
X-ray from Outflow-Cloud Interaction and Its Application in Tidal Disruption Events by Jiashi Chen et al. on Monday 21 November Tidal disruption events (TDEs) may occur in supermassive black holes (SMBHs) surrounded by clouds. TDEs can generate ultrafast and large opening-angle outflow with a velocity of $sim$ 0.01--0.2 c, which will collide with clouds with time lags depending on outflow velocity and cloud distances. Since the fraction of the outflow energy transferred into cloud's radiation is anti-correlated with the cloud density, high density clouds was thought to be inefficient in generating radiation. In this work, we studied the radiation from the outflow-cloud interactions for high density clouds, and found that thermal conduction plays crucial roles in increasing the cloud's radiation. Up to 10% of the bow shock energy can be transferred into clouds and gives rise to X-ray emission with equivalent temperature of $10^{5-6}$ Kelvins due to the cooling catastrophe. The inverse Compton scattering of TDE UV/optical photons by relativistic electrons at bow shock generates power-law X-ray spectra with photon indices $Gammasim 2-3$. Quasi-periodic eruptions from mildly eccentric unstable mass transfer in galactic nuclei by Wenbin Lu et al. on Monday 17 October We propose that the recently observed quasi-periodic eruptions (QPEs) in galactic nuclei are produced by unstable mass transfer due to Roche lobe overflow of a low-mass (< 0.5Msun) main-sequence star in a mildly eccentric (e ~ 0.5) orbit. We argue that the QPE emission is powered by circularization shocks, but not directly by black hole accretion. Our model predicts the presence of a time-steady accretion disk that is bolometrically brighter than the time-averaged QPE luminosity, but primarily emits in the extreme-UV. This is consistent with the quiescent soft X-ray emission detected in between the eruptions in eROSITA QPE1, QPE2, and GSN 069. Such accretion disks have an unusual $nu L_nu propto nu^{12/7}$ optical spectrum. The lifetime of the bright QPE phase, 100-1000 yrs, is set by mass-loss triggered by ram-pressure interaction between the star and the accretion disk fed by the star itself. We show that the stellar orbits needed to explain QPEs can be efficiently created by the Hills breakup of tight stellar binaries provided that (i) the stellar binary orbit is tidally hardened before the breakup due to diffusive growth of the f-mode amplitude, and (ii) the captured star's orbit decays by gravitational wave emission without significant orbital angular momentum diffusion (which is the case for black holes less than about a million Msun). We conclude by discussing the implications of our model for hyper-velocity stars, extreme mass ratio inspirals, repeating partial TDEs, and related stellar phenomena in galactic nuclei. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.08023v1
Disks of Stars in the Galactic center triggered by Tidal Disruption Events by Rosalba Perna et al. on Sunday 16 October In addition to a supermassive black hole (SMBH), the central parsec of the Milky Way hosts over a hundred of massive, high velocity young stars whose existence, and organisation of a subset of them in one, or possibly two, mis-aligned disks, is puzzling. Due to a combination of low medium density and strong tidal forces in the vicinity of Sgr A*, stars are not expected to form. Here we propose a novel scenario for their in-situ formation: a jetted tidal disruption event (TDE) from an older wandering star triggers an episode of positive feedback of star formation in the plane perpendicular to the jet, as demonstrated via numerical simulations in the context of jet-induced feedback in galactic outflows. An over-pressured cocoon surrounding the jet shock-compresses clumps to densities high enough to resist the SMBH tidal field. The TDE rate of $10^{-5}-10^{-4}$ yr$^{-1}$ per galaxy, out of which a few percent events are jetted, implies a jetted TDE event per galaxy to occur every few million years. This timescale is interestingly of the same order of the age of the disk stars. The mass function predicted by our mechanism is top-heavy. Additionally, since TDEs are isotropic, our model predicts a random orientation for the disk of stars with respect to the plane of the galaxy and, due to the relatively high TDE rate, it can account for multiple disks of stars with uncorrelated orientations. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.07260v1

The UV Excesses of Supernovae and the Implications for Studying Supernovae and Other Optical Transients by Tao Wang et al. on Monday 10 October Supernovae (SNe), kilonovae (KNe), tidal disruption events (TDEs), optical afterglows of gamma ray bursts (GRBs), and many other optical transients are important phenomena in time-domain astronomy. Fitting the multi-band light curves (LCs) or the synthesized (pseudo-)bolometric LCs can be used to constrain the physical properties of optical transients. The (UV absorbed) blackbody module is one of the most important modules used to fit the multi-band LCs of optical transients having (UV absorbed) blackbody spectral energy distributions (SEDs). We find, however, that the SEDs of some SNe show UV excesses, which cannot be fitted by the model including a (UV absorbed) blackbody module. We construct the bolometric LCs and employ the (cooling plus) Ni model to fit the constructed bolometric LCs, obtaining decent fits. Our results demonstrate that the optical transients showing UV excesses cannot be fitted by the multi-band models that include (UV-absorbed) blackbody module, but can be well modeled by constructing and fitting their bolometric LCs. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.04119v1
The Study of Dust Formation of Six Tidal Disruption Events by Xian-Mao Cao et al. on Monday 10 October This paper investigates eleven (UV-)optical-infrared (IR) spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of six tidal disruption events (TDEs), which are ASASSN-14li, ASASSN-15lh, ASASSN-18ul, ASASSN-18zj, PS18kh, and ZTF18acaqdaa. We find that all the SEDs show evident IR excesses. We invoke the blackbody plus dust emission model to fit the SEDs, and find that the model can account for the SEDs. The derived masses of the dust surrounding ASASSN-14li, ASASSN-15lh, ASASSN-18ul, ASASSN-18zj, PS18kh, and ZTF18acaqdaa are respectively $sim0.7-1.0,(1.5-2.2)times10^{-4},M_odot$, $sim0.6-3.1,(1.4-6.3)times10^{-2},M_odot$, $sim1.0,(2.8)times10^{-4},M_odot$, $sim0.1-1.6,(0.3-3.3)times10^{-3},M_odot$, $sim1.0,(2.0)times10^{-3},M_odot$, and $sim 1.1,(2.9)times10^{-3},M_odot$, if the dust is graphite (silicate). The temperature of the graphite (silicate) dust of the six TDEs are respectively $sim1140-1430,(1210-1520)$,K, $sim1030-1380,(1100-1460)$,K, $sim1530,(1540)$,K, $sim960-1380,(1020-1420)$,K, $sim900,(950)$,K, and $sim1600,(1610)$,K. By comparing the derived temperatures to the vaporization temperature of graphite ($sim 1900$,K) and silicate ($sim 1100-1500$,K), we suggest that the IR excesses of PS18kh can be explained by both the graphite and silicate dust, the rest five TDEs favor the graphite dust while the silicate dust model cannot be excluded. Moreover, we demonstrate the lower limits of the radii of the dust shells surrounding the six TDEs are significantly larger than those of the radii of the photospheres at the first epochs of SEDs, indicating that the dust might exist before the the TDEs occurred. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.04115v1

Choked jet model for the neutrino emission associated with Tidal Disruption Events by Jian-He Zheng et al. on Sunday 25 September Three tidal disruption event (TDE) candidates (AT2019dsg, AT2019fdr, AT2019aalc) have been found to be coincident with high energy astrophysical neutrinos in multi-messenger follow-ups. Recent studies suggest the presence of a quasi-spherical, optically thick envelope around the supermassive black holes in TDEs, resulted from stellar debris after the disruption. We study whether the neutrino signal can be explained by choked relativistic jets inside the envelope. While powerful jets, such as that in Swift J1644+57, can successfully break out the envelope, those with relatively weak power could be choked by the envelope. Choked jets can still accelerate cosmic rays through internal shocks or reverse shocks deep in the envelope, which further produce high-energy neutrinos via interaction with the thermal photons in the envelope. We explore the parameter space of the jets that can produce detectable neutrino flux while being choked. Under reasonable assumption about the envelope mass, we find that the cumulative neutrino numbers of three TDEs are consistent with the expected range imposed by observations. Compared with other proposed models, the relativistic bulk motion of the jets in our model can magnify the neutrino flux by Lorentz boosting. The neutrino time delay relative to the optical peak time of TDEs can be explained as the jet propagation time in the envelope before being choked. The discovery of TDE-associated neutrino events may suggest that jets might have been commonly formed in TDEs, as expected from super-Eddington accretion, but most of them are too weak to break out of the envelopes. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.11005v2
Choked jet model for the neutrino emission associated with Tidal Disruption Events by Jian-He Zheng et al. on Thursday 22 September Three tidal disruption event (TDE) candidates (AT2019dsg, AT2019fdr, AT2019aalc) have been found to be coincident with high energy astrophysical neutrinos in multi-messenger follow-ups. Recent studies suggest the presence of a quasi-spherical, optically thick envelope around the supermassive black holes in TDEs, resulted from stellar debris after the disruption. We study whether the neutrino signal can be explained by choked relativistic jets inside the envelope. While powerful jets, such as that in Swift J1644+57, can successfully break out the envelope, those with relatively weak power could be choked by the envelope. Choked jets can still accelerate cosmic rays through internal shocks or reverse shocks deep in the envelope, which further produce high-energy neutrinos via interaction with the thermal photons in the envelope. We explore the parameter space of the jets that can produce detectable neutrino flux while being choked. Under reasonable assumption about the envelope mass, we find that the cumulative neutrino numbers of three TDEs are consistent with the expected range imposed by observations. Compared with other proposed models, the relativistic bulk motion of the jets in our model can magnify the neutrino flux by Lorentz boosting. The neutrino time delay relative to the optical peak time of TDEs can be explained as the jet propagation time in the envelope before being choked. The discovery of TDE-associated neutrino events may suggest that jets might have been commonly formed in TDEs, as expected from super-Eddington accretion, but most of them are too weak to break out of the envelopes. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2209.11005v1
A simple and accurate prescription for the tidal disruption radius of a star and the peak accretion rate in tidal disruption events by Eric R. Coughlin et al. on Sunday 11 September A star destroyed by a supermassive black hole (SMBH) in a tidal disruption event (TDE) enables the study of SMBHs. We propose that the distance within which a star is completely destroyed by a SMBH, defined $r_{rm t, c}$, is accurately estimated by equating the SMBH tidal field (including numerical factors) to the maximum gravitational field in the star. We demonstrate that this definition accurately reproduces the critical $beta_{rm c} = r_{rm t}/r_{rm t, c}$, where $r_{rm t} = R_{star}left(M_{bullet}/M_{star}right)^{1/3}$ is the standard tidal radius with $R_{star}$ and $M_{star}$ the stellar radius and mass and $M_{bullet}$ the SMBH mass, for multiple stellar progenitors at various ages, and can be reasonably approximated by $beta_{rm c} simeq left[rho_{rm c}/(4rho_{star})right]^{1/3}$, where $rho_{rm c}$ ($rho_{star}$) is the central (average) stellar density. We also calculate the peak fallback rate and time at which the fallback rate peaks, finding excellent agreement with hydrodynamical simulations, and also suggest that the partial disruption radius -- the distance at which any mass is successfully liberated from the star -- is $beta_{rm partial} simeq 4^{-1/3} simeq 0.6$. Reliés au cerveau par des nerfs spécifiques, ces bourgeons gustatifs, stimulés par les molécules responsables du goût, transmettent au cerveau des informations relatives à la saveur des aliments.Là, elles y sont analysées dans une aire cérébrale spécifique. De leur côté, certaines cellules, dans la bouche et sous les dents, sont capables de détecter la température et la consistance des aliments.Pour que les bourgeons gustatifs entrent en action, il faut que l'aliment ingéré comporte des cellules sapides, c'est-à-dire dotées d'un goût. De même, il doit être sensible à l'action de la salive, qui joue un rôle essentiel dans la perception du goût des aliments.Bien entendu, l'aliment doit être également en contact avec les bourgeons gustatifs.
