My Boy, the third solo record from New Zealand singer/songwriter Marlon Williams, announces an artist emerging anew. Gone is the solemn, country-indebted crooner with the velvet voice – in his place comes a playful, shapeshifting creature. Following the release of his second album, 2018's Make Way For Love, Williams' toured the world, playing major festivals and collaborating with Lorde, Yo-Yo Ma and Florence Welch. He also forged a fledgling acting career with roles in films The True History of the Kelly Gang and Netflix series Sweet Tooth, as well as a cameo in Oscar winning film A Star Is Born. My Boy parlays this flush of worldly experience into a vivid record as spirited and kinetic as the unfolding life of its performer. “I've always explored different character elements in my music,” says Williams. “And the more I get into acting, the more tricks I'm learning about representation and presentation. To get braver and bolder with exploring shifting contexts and new ways of doing things.” As the pandemic paused global travel, Williams found himself at home in New Zealand, reconnecting with family and friends. Soon new demos and lyrical themes emerged: of self-identity and escapism; tribalism and a gnarled family tree; and ruminations on the role of masculinity and mateship. Co-produced with Tom Healy and recorded at Roundhead Studios in New Zealand, My Boy finds Williams' leading a new band through a set of genre-hopping tunes: from the cheery sway of ‘My Boy' and chugging ‘80s noir sheen of ‘Thinking Of Nina', to the charging synth of ‘River Rival', and the sultry pop jam ‘Don't Go Back.' All this sonic and emotional whiplash is intentional, and ultimately My Boy sees Williams having fun, even while interrogating the behaviours of himself and those around him. A rare blend of eloquent lyrical craft and explorative musicianship, the songs of Tiny Ruins have been treasured by crowds and critics for over a decade. Via an eclectic raft of influences, the musical world of Hollie Fullbrook and band spans delicate folk, lustrous dream pop and ebullient psychedelia. Born in Bristol and raised in West Auckland, songwriter & multi-instrumentalist Fullbrook's debut LP Some Were Meant For Sea (2011) features her alone, and was quickly celebrated by radio playlists and blogs worldwide. The album’s clutch of “gorgeous vignettes” (BBC) put the artist on the map, and she took to the road from her home in New Zealand to tour extensively through the UK, Europe and North America – often accompanied by her friend Cass Basil on bass. Following the tape-recorded EP Haunts (2013), produced by Jon Pearce (The Beths), and with the addition of drummer Alex Freer, the then-trio began work on second album Brightly Painted One with producer Tom Healy, who later joined the band on electric guitar. Brightly Painted One (2014) was championed by the New York Times, NPR and David Lynch, & won Best Alternative Album at the New Zealand Music Awards - “…an album of quiet, devastating beauty,” wrote Pop Matters. “...an album that both bruises the heart and lifts the soul...songwriting that demonstrates a novelist’s eye for detail.”— Uncut review of 'Brightly Painted One' In between touring, Fullbrook became a sought after collaborator. A New York recording session culminated in the EP Hurtling Through (2015) with indie-rock legend Hamish Kilgour (The Clean), while single Dream Wave (2016) was recorded and produced by award-winning cult filmmaker and musician David Lynch - “A tranquil, pared-back track [with] a gradually rising sense of the macabre… very special indeed.”— The Line of Best Fit Building on the sparse minimalism and intricate songwriting of earlier releases, the band’s third album Olympic Girls comprises a taut and agile quiver of songs, dancing with explorative instrumentation and a pop sensibility that springs with life. “How much would you be willing to give?” Fullbrook asks point-blank in first single ‘How Much’, ahead of woozily discordant strings and a stomping neo-psychedelic rhythm. The lyric brims with imagery of supermarket breakdowns, lilos, snarks and silos while an anthemic guitar hook soars throughout. Not content to leave the song at a stable conclusion, a thumping ‘I am the Walrus’-esque bass outro propels the track boomerang-style back to a space of adroit experimentation. “I've heard Olympic Girls, and I had to pick my jaw up off the floor”, wrote https://www.stuff.co.nz/auckland/108148664/Tiny-Ruins-Hollie-Fullbrooks-new-album-jaw-dropping (Grant Smithies). “Clustered around more introspective passages typical of confessional singer-songwriters are gnarlier phrases that give her work its buzzy voltage: arresting visual images, weird associations, daisy-chains of telling detail.” See https://www.tinyruins.com/shows (Tour Dates.) MOJO Review of Olympic Girls - ★★★★ UNCUT Review of Olympic Girls - 8/10 "Part of the charm of Olympic Girls lies in the layers of mystery in each song. Inspired by literature, science, nature and human experience, these mysteries lie waiting to be carefully unfolded…” God Is In the TV - 9/10 "An album confident in its vulnerability and luxuriating in a bigger sound." Loud & Quiet Review of Olympic Girls - 8/10 "… songs that change sound and mood during their duration, never meandering and always captivating.” BUST Review of Olympic Girls - 5/5 “… a deeper listen to these eleven tracks exposes a breadth of influences that spans decades.” - The Wire Review of Olympic Girls “She is always looking uneasily toward the next line, or moving toward mysticism. In sentimental contexts, she generates lines of wicked ambition.”— The New York Times “Fullbrook’s hushed yet forceful songs, packed with obsessives and...

Joe Rizzo brings you baseball. Riz, Jeff "Dawg" Healy and Jerry Milani brought the show to Facebook Live for the first time ever, and the community got involved. If you want to check out the video, you can find it on the Facebook group below. Lots to unpack here. It was Jackie Robinson Day in MLB so all players were wearing uniform number 42 in his honor. Late in the show, the stunning news broke of the death of actor Chadwick Boseman, who played Robinson in the recent movie. Before that it was Dawg's chance to have his day, finally. Dawg's Mets have lost seemingly every time he has been doing a show while they played a game. With Yankees fans Riz & Jerry on the hook and the Mets already having taken the first game of their doubleheader, Dawg got to watch as Amed Rosario hit a two-run walkoff homer for the Mets in the bottom of the 7th inning. There was interaction with the viewers on Facebook, who posed some very solid discussion topics, including baseball in Canada, rules changes that might stay longer than 2020, and sports' place in society during a tumultuous year that has included the recent boycotting of some MLB games. Jerry also shared a story about Scottish actor Sam Heughan of Outlander, which has nothing to do with baseball but might cause someone to find this episode when searching his name. ;-) The Veteran of the Day was Ct. Tom Healy, Dawg's father. He might end up being Veteran of the Day if the Mets keep winning. Tom and Eric Healy are the father and son team behind The No Bake Cookie Co and AvoLov Avocado Chips. AvoLov’s chips are made from real hass avocados, dried to a crisp and seasoned to perfection. The No-Bake Cookie Company is based in Bend, Oregon, the lifelong home of founder, Carol Healy. Both Carol and her husband Tom grew up in the small community located in the heart of Oregon, at the base of the Cascade Mountains. Here’s a glimpse of what you’ll learn: [0:45] Tom Healy joins Jeremy to talk about The No-Bake Cookie. [2:10] Who was the first customer? How did they expand production? [3:30] Tom talks about getting The No-Bake Cookie featured on QVC. [4:00] Tom’s son, Eric joins Jeremy to talk about Avocado Chips. [6:15] Where can you find Avocado Chips? What is Eric proud of from the journey? In this episode… Remember when the days when the things you snacked on were made from simple ingredients? These days, there’s no telling what number of lab-grown chemicals and ingredients are used in the snacks we feed our kids and ourselves! What is the solution? On this episode of Inspired Insider, you’ll hear from both Tom and Eric Healy. In their conversation with Jeremy, Tom and Eric talk about how they got their business off of the ground, what it took to develop their snacks made with simple ingredients, and much more. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to learn from Tom and Eric’s fascinating story! When you start a new company, one of the biggest fears is how will you find an audience for your product or service. Where would you start if you had to start tomorrow? How would you bring in customers or distributors for your product? Tom Healy was convinced that he had something special the No Bake Cookie he and his wife created. After reaching out to several distributors and wondering which one would bite on the no-bake cookie, they were thrilled to hear Nordstrom would carry the cookies at their Espresso Coffee Bars. What can you learn from Tom’s story and his success with Nordstrom? Did you know that Avocado chips are notoriously difficult to turn into chips? Think about it; avocados are a very finicky fruit with a smooth and creamy texture. The significant challenge of turning avocados into chips didn’t deter Eric Healy; he had the vision for a healthy snack with simple ingredients. After numerous trials and tests, Eric and his team were able to successfully create their product, AvoLov Avocado Chips. When they unveiled the end result at Exo West, Eric was amazed at the overwhelmingly positive response from the public. Make sure to learn more about AvoLove Avocado Chips and The No-Bake Cookie Co through their websites located in the resources section at the end of this post. Mighty Blue On The Appalachian Trail: The Ultimate Mid-Life Crisis
This week's guest, Tom Healy, is somebody who I hiked around for a while in 2014. He seemed so comfortable out in the woods that I assumed that he had been a lifetime hiker. It turns out that, like me, this was his first long-distance hike. Since he completed the Appalachian Trail, Tom has spent more and more of his life hiking longer trails and regards it as his lifestyle. As we spoke in this interview I found a few more similarities in our journey, but it was in the post-hike worlds that hiking became his new normal while I was pretty sure that I was one and done. That turned out not to be the case for me, but for Tom, it really accelerated to the extent that he expects to complete his Triple Crown this summer. He loves to photograph his surroundings and I urge you all to check out his Instagram account, where you can find him at thealy416. If you'd like to follow his journey even closer, why not read his Trail Journals from the PCT and the CDT? Tom would love to reconnect with old friends so look him up, not only on Instagram but also on Facebook at tom.healy.79677. He even shared his phone number if anybody wants to chat directly. Call him on 843-425-3033 but please call at a reasonable time!! Bethany Varner came on for a brief chat about one or two things that she might change about her hike were she ever to go again. Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the Divine Right of Kings. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the character Malcolm describes the magical healing powers of the king: “How he solicits heaven, Himself best knows; but strangely-visited people, All swoln and ulcerous, pitiful to the eye, The mere despair of surgery, he cures; Hanging a golden stamp about their necks, Put on with holy prayers...”The idea that a monarch could heal with his touch flowed from the idea that a king was sacred, appointed by God and above the judgement of earthly powers. It was called the Divine Right of Kings. The idea resided deep in the culture of 17th century Britain affecting the pomp of the Stuart Kings, the writings of Milton and Shakespeare and the political works of John Locke. It is a story that involves witches, regicide, scrofula, Macbeth, miraculous portraits and some of the greatest poetry in the English language. With Justin Champion, Professor of the History of Early Modern Ideas at Royal Holloway, University of London; Tom Healy, Professor of Renaissance Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London; Clare Jackson, Lecturer and Director of Studies in History at Trinity Hall, Cambridge

Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the ‘Oresteia', the seminal trilogy of tragedies by Aeschylus. The composer Richard Wagner recalled the visceral sensations of reading Aeschylus' great trilogy for the first time. "I could see the Oresteia with my mind's eye ... Nothing could equal the sublime emotion with which the Agamemnon inspired me; and to the last word of the Eumenides, I remained in an atmosphere so far removed from the present day that I have never since been really able to reconcile myself with modern literature." Aeschylus' audience were all familiar with the tale of one man's return home from the Trojan War. Homer's Odyssey recounted Odysseus' perilous journey home, the forceful ejection of the suitors from his household and his reunion with wife Penelope and son Telemachus. Aeschylus had a very different tale of homecoming to tell in his Oresteia. Agamemnon arrives home from Troy to a murderous welcome from a vengeful wife and a cycle of atrocities unfolds in his household. The Oresteia has inspired some of the greatest artists and thinkers of the modern world. From Richard Wagner and Friedrich Nietzsche to T.S. Eliot and Simone de Beauvoir – the ‘Oresteia' has fired the modern imagination. Why did Aeschylus make the family the subject of his bloody revenge tragedy? How did his trilogy make a contribution to the development of Athenian legal institutions? And why has the Oresteia had such a powerful hold over the modern imagination? With Edith Hall, Professor of Greek Cultural History at Durham University; Simon Goldhill, Professor of Greek at the University of Cambridge; Tom Healy, Professor of Renaissance Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London.
