Too Scared to Dance—Now She's Inspiring Thousands! What if the key to transforming your life was simply finding something that makes you feel joyful? Something that feels more like play than exercise? In this episode, I'm talking with Shanon Hunt, the creator of Midlife Shuffle on YouTube and Instagram, who went from being too terrified to dance in public—even at her own wedding—to becoming a shuffle dance sensation in her 50s. And she did it all after having two knee replacements. Shanon's story is about so much more than dance. It's about letting go of fear, redefining what's possible in midlife, and discovering a form of movement that feels fun and freeing. If you've ever thought, I wish I could do that, Shanon's journey will inspire you to take the first step—no matter your age, weight or physical limitations. And stick around to the end, because Shanon also shares her secret to pushing through fear and finding joy on the other side. Whether you're looking for motivation to try something new or just want to bring more playfulness into your life, this episode is for you.

Send us a textAre you a Weenie? Don't be offended. I am. Weenies are the curious-but-nervous. Those of us who love horror, but who never feel safe from its power to ruin our sleep (and a week of our life). If that's you, or if you know someone who suffers from Weenie-ism, then Emily Hughes is here! Emily's new book, Horror For Weenies: Everything You Need to Know About the Films You're Too Scared to Watch is a public service for the scared. It will save relationships, help ease you into horror and hopefully teach you a thing or two about fear along the way. In this conversation, we talk about how Emily came to write this most particular of books, and how she chose which films made the grade. We also hear about her own relationship with horror, from the film that haunted her as a child all the way to her grown-up reintroduction to scary movies. And I finally try to back up my dislike for Hereditary. Enjoy. For the 150th episode of the podcast, returning guest Meg Shields joins me from Vancouver for a show about William Friedkin's legendary horror film The Exorcist, which turns 50 years old this December. I had always been TOO SCARED to watch the original Exorcist (even though I had seen the first two sequels) so for this podcast, as a farewell tribute to Hurricane Billy who passed away this August, I watched it for the first time. Meg and I discuss this prototypical blockbuster based on the bestselling novel by William Peter Blatty, the first horror movie to be Oscar nominated for Best Picture, and a cultural phenomenon where audiences lined up for hours hoping to buy a ticket for this endurance test, with many reports of horrified walkouts and fainting spells in the lobby at every screening. We discuss the differences between the original 1973 theatrical version and the “director's cut” from the year 2000, the criticism of this film in some circles as a reactionary and patriarchal work, Friedkin's insane conduct on the set (including mistreatment of the actors), the strange connection between The Exorcist and Freidkin's later film Cruising, and Meg and I wonder what Hurricane Billy would have said about this year's “legacy sequel” The Exorcist: Believer, which opened two months after his death. The 2019 documentary Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist is available to stream in North America on Kanopy. Become a patron of the podcast to access to exclusive episodes every month. In the last few decades, reality TV has become a worldwide phenomenon, offering viewers a voyeuristic look into the lives of everyday people, as well as celebrities. These seemingly unscripted shows, have huge audiences who tune in for the conflicts and dramas, emotional breakdowns and shocking twists. But behind the glitz and glamour, there is a dark side to reality tv which can negatively impact on the lives of its participants. For some, there is a high price to pay for the pursuit of fame and fortune. With Ziyana Kotadia and Karen Campbell. Content note: this episode addresses sexual violence. Too Scared to Learn: Women, Violence, and Education by Jenny Horsman (2013) uncovers how violence negatively impacts a student's ability to learn. It focusses on women's literacy, but the broader lesson is clear. None of us can properly learn when we're scared and targeted. This has huge implications for girls, women, and gender-diverse students in all schools, as well as huge implications for post-secondary environments like colleges and universities, where sexual violence is a particular problem. It's the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, a great time to talk about ending sexual violence on campus. Our first guest is Ziyana Kotadia, an advocate and writer in her final year of an Honours Specialization in Global Gender Studies and a Minor in Feminist, Queer and Critical Race Theory from Western University and Huron University College. She's Chair of the Safe Campus Coalition and a contributor to the Our Campus, Our Safety Action Plan, a call for action from students all over Canada. Ziyana is passionate about poetry, performance, and politics and has a keen interest in exploring intersections among the worlds of academia, art, and advocacy. She was the 2021-2022 Vice-President University Affairs for Western's University Students' Council, one of the nation's leading student organizations, where she championed gender equity projects and the voices of over 35,000 undergraduate and professional students as the Chief Advocate and Stakeholder Relations Manager to the university's senior administration. Her most recent publications include her op-ed “Universities Need a Consent Awareness Week in Ontario” in the ‘Toronto Star', her second-place winning poem "Heir to A Garden Heart" in ‘Symposium', and her academic article "Poetry, Prayer, and Politics: An Autoethnographic Exploration of Womanhood in the Canadian Ugandan Khoja Ismaili Diaspora" in ‘Liberated Arts: A Journal for Undergraduate Research'. Our second guest, Karen Campbell, Director of Community Initiatives & Policy at the Canadian Women's Foundation. She speaks new research we did in collaboration with the McGill University iMPACTS initiative, documented in a report entitled: Social Media and Mobilizing Change for Community Impacts. It explores the connection between students, social media, and sexual assault on university and college campuses. When you look in the mirror, what do you see? If you've been consistently in a bad mood, it might be a sign that you're miserable with what you're doing. Quit the things you don't enjoy and make that jump into better moods. In this episode, Pat Hiban joins Matt O'Neill in talking about The Quitter's Manifesto. They talk about doing more of what you enjoy and quitting your way into success and good moods. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Do more of the things you enjoy! Appreciate what you already have. Cut out what puts you in a bad mood. Express and accept your feelings. Consciously choose to be in a good mood. [01:17] What Puts You Into a Good Mood You're not always conscious of how you feel in the present. You have to ask and get to know what gets you into a good mood. Once you know what things you enjoy doing, go out and do more of them! [09:57] Too Scared to Quit Many people feel trapped and miserable in their jobs. However, they're too scared to quit. It's you who can make the most impact on your success. However, quitting doesn't always mean you have to start your own business. It can lead to creating your own place to pursue your passion or to finding a job with a better culture. [18:43] Are You Ready to Quit? Don't just simply quit your job. Quitting doesn't mean sitting still. You have to put in the work and build the skills you need to make it work. Don't let go of something because you're comparing your situation to what others may have. Instead, appreciate what you have. [24:55] Quitting Bad Moods Matt and Pat talk about the practice of marking your calendar with pluses, minuses, and equals. Get rid of your minuses and equals. Instead, pursue a calendar full of plus days. You can do the same with the people around you. [35:00] Accepting Your Feelings Expressing how you feel can affirm how true your feelings are for you. It's alright to feel and acknowledge your emotions. However, you're in charge of making a good life for yourself. Make the conscious decision to move away from bad moods into good ones. Notable quotes: [13:10] — [13:14] “Betting on yourself is actually the safest bet you could make.” - Matt [20:07] — [20:11] “If you're going to quit, you better have the skills inside you or the resolve to go and build those skills.” - Matt [32:21] — [33:25] “I think we all need other people and human interaction to be in a good mood.” - Matt Resources Mentioned: The Quitter's Manifesto by Tim Rhode and Pat Hiban Tony Robbins Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill Download the Good Mood Toolkit here! “The Problems with Food Media that Nobody Wants to Talk About” was the provocative title of a provocative article recently published on the website First We Feast. We've assembled a roundtable to hash out such contentions as “Food Writers are Too Scared of Losing Access to be Critical” and “PR Has Too Much Influence on What Gets Covered.” Joining us in the studio are co-author of the think-piece, Chris Schonberger; Saveur's senior digital editor Max Falkowitz; and chef Marco Canora of New York City's Hearth and Brodo. We also kick around the top stories in the chef world this week such as Dallas food critic Leslie Brenner's new video feature that puts her face to face with chefs and a recent shift by many top chefs, including Canora, toward a more health-conscious restaurant cuisine. “If you do good work people will read it, and if you deliver in the right way people will find it.” [25:40] –Max Falkowitz on The Front Burner
