In this riveting episode, we dive into the mysterious and unsettling phenomenon known as Stendhal Syndrome, where the overwhelming beauty of art triggers intense emotional reactions—sometimes leading to hallucinations, panic, or even unconsciousness. But what if this isn't just a rare psychological condition? What if Stendhal Syndrome is deliberately induced, a hidden weapon used by secret organizations to manipulate and control the minds of those who experience it? Join us as we explore the dark side of art, where beauty hides a sinister agenda. Introduction to Stendhal Syndrome: Overview of the condition and its psychological effects. Historical cases and how the syndrome was first identified. The Renaissance Conspiracy: The theory that Renaissance artists were commissioned by secret societies to embed mind-altering codes in their masterpieces. Analysis of famous works, such as Botticelli's "Primavera" and Da Vinci's "The Last Supper," believed to contain these hidden triggers. Art as a Weapon: Exploration of how art could be used to influence emotions, perceptions, and even beliefs. Examples of how Stendhal Syndrome might be exploited for psychological manipulation and mind control. Florence: The Epicenter of the Conspiracy? Why Florence, the cradle of the Renaissance, might be the heart of this secret agenda. Speculation on whether modern museums and galleries are continuing this practice. The Role of Shadowy Organizations: Discussion of the possible involvement of secret societies, government agencies, or powerful elites in the exploitation of Stendhal Syndrome. The potential motivations behind this control—social engineering, influence over cultural movements, or something even more sinister. The Art of Resistance: How to protect oneself from the hidden power of art—can awareness break the spell? The importance of questioning what lies beneath the surface of cultural masterpieces. Conclusion: Summarizing the implications of the theory—if true, what does this mean for the future of art and human consciousness? Encouragement for listeners to explore art with both an open mind and a cautious heart. Tune in as we pull back the curtain on one of the most mysterious intersections of art and psychology, revealing a conspiracy that could change how you see the world's most celebrated masterpieces.

Following last year's series talking about the American titans of horror — Tobe Hooper, John Carpenter, Wes Craven, and George A. Romero — Split Picks centers in on another country renowned for its horror films: Italy. First up is Dario Argento, a master of giallo, gore, and guts. Argento has directed some of the most iconic films, scenes and shots in all of horror. His most famous works include Suspiria, Deep Red, Inferno, and Tenebre. With Bennett Glace and Steve Collins, Split Picks wrestles with Argento's 1992 film The Stendhal Syndrome, arguably his last great film and one full of controversy. [Editor's note: This episode discusses graphic sexual assault and violence presented in the film.] In the starring role is Dario's daughter Asia Argento, who plays detective Anna Manni in pursuit of a serial rapist and murderer loose in the city. But she begins to experience Stendhal Syndrome as she interacts with artwork in museums, which draws her in to paintings, all while the suspect she is chasing begins to hunt her. This is the first of a two-part episode, with Pt. 2 about Argento's The Phantom Of The Opera arriving tomorrow.

Dario Argento, master of Italian horror, once had a film distributed by Troma Entertainment. It's 1996's The Stendhal Syndrome. Starring daughter Asia Argento as a police detective tracking a serial rapist, it explores themes of trauma in a nuanced, compelling way. Plot twist: The Stendhal Syndrome is now a Full Moon Feature. Go figure.

The coats are covering themselves in paint to further explore the condition of Argento's 1996 giallo: "The Stendhal Syndrome". Using his daughter, Asia Argento, once again to explore the blurring of reality and identity when faced with TRAUMA (but not that trauma). Often overlooked, "Stendhal" has seen a resurgence in popularity and forced many to cast their eyes on this vintage 90's horror film. Will this giallo have the coats down with the Syndrome? Or will they put on a blonde wig and try to put this all behind them?Director - Dario ArgentoStarring - Asia Argento - Thomas Kretschmann - Marco LeonardiIf you like the show, stab the follow button on your podcast app and write a nice 5-star review to help us grow the show! And if you want some more conspicuous content, support the show on Patreon at: https://www.patreon.com/ConspicuousTrenchcoatsCatch the Coats on:instagram https://www.instagram.com/con.coats/Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ConCoatsconcoats.buzzsprout.comGet your tickets to see your conspicuous host in the new Army of the Dead VR game at: https://armyofthedeadvr.comSpecial Thanks to:Lucas Brahme for our music https://www.lucasbrahme.comUptownStyleStudio for designing our artwork https://www.instagram.com/uptownstylestudio/Veronica Maccarihttps://www.instagram.com/iamveronicamaccari/?hl=enMichael Mackenzie (http://theses.gla.ac.uk/4730/1/2013Mackenziephd.pdf)Troy HowarthArrow VideoJ&B WhiskeyIMDBSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/ConspicuousTrenchcoats)

Oh yes. It's exactly what you think it is. Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer, and Brinke Stevens star in the 1988 cult classic SORORITY BABES IN THE SLIMEBALL BOWL-O-RAMA! We also have a great supporting cast, including Andras Jones (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4), Hal Havins (NIGHT OF THE DEMONS), and B-movie giant George “Buck” Flower. Join me and one of my favorite rubber hand puppets a.k.a. The Imp (voiced by Dukey Flyswatter) as he terrorizes a group of coeds locked in a bowling alley. If you're searching for substance, search elsewhere. This one is pure entertainment—and pure fun! There's a reason they tell you to keep a healthy distance from hanging works of art while strolling your favorite museum, and it has nothing to do with sneezing on the Mona Lisa. If you're like Anna Manning (Asia Argento), you enter the painting, falling headfirst into a strange new world, where fang-toothed fish are so friendly, they come up and plant one right on your mouth. Anna is experiencing what is known as The Stendhal Syndrome, a disruption of the mind which occurs when the eye takes in some of the most beautiful paintings in the world. It is a strange and uncommon phenomenon Dario Argento himself experienced as a child and, being that it had such a strong hold on him for the decades that would follow, he turned it into one of his most visually stunning films. My Good buddy and #1 Chucky Fanboy James Garibay joins me for this commentary, so hold your breath and dive on in. What is Stendhal syndrome?Stendhal’s syndrome is a rare and unusual psychological disorder. It’s a psychosomatic condition whereby certain people suffer from a rapid heartbeat, fainting or even hallucinations, when exposed to objects or works of art of great beauty. The condition takes its name from a famous French writer who experienced a similar state of intense emotion upon visiting Rome, Naples and Florence. Stendhal wrote about his visit to Florence’s Santa Croce Basilica in a book entitled Naples and Florence: A journey from Milan to Reggio. Here’s how he described the phenomenon: “I was in a sort of ecstasy, from the idea of being in Florence, close to the great men whose tombs I had seen. Absorbed in the contemplation of sublime beauty...I reached the point where one encounters celestial sensations ... Everything spoke so vividly to my soul...I had palpitations of the heart...Life was drained from me. I walked with the fear of falling”.Although there are historical records of others fainting in the presence of Florentine art, the syndrome was only actually named in 1979 by Italian psychiatrist Graziella Magherini. While Stendhal Syndrome is not recognised as a psychiatric disorder, it’s now commonly used to describe a physical reaction to the beauty of the natural world or art masterpieces.Working at the Santa Maria Nuova hospital in Florence, Magherini observed more than 100 cases where patients had severe emotional responses to art. These were mainly tourists, including many Americans. In 1989, she released a book named “The Stendhal Syndrome”, in which she told her story. The cases were divided into three types, based on the symptoms of their anxiety or psychotic episodes. The most common profile was a single woman, under the age of 40, travelling alone. Symptoms described in the book included dizzy spells, a loss of sense of identity, rapid heartbeat and hallucinations. Generally speaking, patients recovered after leaving the city of Florence. Most people don’t stop to consider the artistry involved with the framework that houses paintings. In many cases this is done on purpose, too elaborate or extravagant framework might detract from the detail and message that the artist is trying to convey. But artist Holly Lane has a different approach. She combines both aspects in a harmonious creative endeavor. The result is breathtaking. Holly carefully and litigiously plans how her work with carving and designing her frames will complement and enhance her painting as if they were one unified piece of art. Words don’t do Holly’s work justice, you have to see this brilliant and gifted approach - make sure to scroll down to the bottom of this post to see the images she provided. Early affirmations in carving out a creative path Not all artists receive the encouragement and enthusiasm for their early work as much as they’d like. Many artists use this adversity and challenge to fuel their creativity drive to succeed and make a name for themselves. Artist Holly Lane was fortunate enough to receive some early affirmations from her professors partly because of the unique nature of her work. In art school, Holly really discovered her passion, not only for painting but also for crafting and cultivating a skill for creating intricate frames that enhance her paintings. Holly’s journey wasn’t easy, she has faced her fair share of challenges but it’s refreshing to hear such a positive and encouraging start to an illustrious career. Art Inspired by Animals and Mythology It is an absolute joy to get the chance to hear from so many artists about what motivates and inspires their creative process. I asked my guest Holly Lane about her creative journey and how she conceptualizes her work. Holly explained that she gets a lot of her inspiration from “Interspecies compassion” - philosophical proofs that animals can think. She also delves into the imaginative journey and contemplates the backstory and implications of myths like the Roman goddess Fortuna. Holly has a vibrant and infectious energy that really comes alive when she opens up about her passion for her work. It's always wonderful to hear from such a talented and gracious artist. What is the Stendhal Syndrome? Have you ever heard of the Stendhal Syndrome? Neither had I until my conversation with Holly Lane. Once you hear what it is, it will sound familiar to you. The Stendhal Syndrome is a psychosomatic disorder that causes strong physical reactions and even hallucinations when an individual is exposed to an experience of great personal significance, particularly viewing art. Holly and I discussed our experiences with this phenomena and she told me about a meaningful moment someone had encountering her work. For an artist to see someone react so viscerally to their work is a powerful and meaningful moment and that certainly comes through when Holly tells the story. Keeping the artist's dream alive What is your dream project? Where would you go? What would you take with you? Artist Holly Lane was kind enough to indulge this question that I posed to her over the course of our conversation. Given the inspiration and type of work Holly engages in, her answer shouldn’t be too surprising. She said that she would like to travel to the great castles and cathedrals of Europe. There she would draw and take pictures, then compose a body of work to be exhibited either in a church or in a forest. Holly didn’t miss a beat when I asked her this question so you can tell this is something that is near the surface and that she's been dreaming about. I hope she gets to follow her dream and I hope you have one just below the surface that you will follow too! Outline of This Episode [0:35] My introduction to today’s guest, Holly Lane. K1971 PODCAST - HELENA GALLARDO The influence of his father, together with an inborn love and restlessness for music, took Helena to become a sound engineer and work as a post-production sound designer. This, plus her taste for terror films and touching sounds, helped her give shape and define the sound which makes her unique. In addition to running the hit radioshow: “Genesis”, with Tadeo, which airs weekly on “Vicious Radio” . After years of musical career, she's still trying to keep one foot in the underground and not be swayed easily. For her, music has always been and will be emotion , strength and feeling, far removed from the concept of industry attributes and market.
