There has been a significant increase in player ejections for boys soccer and football games this year, according to the Oregon School Activities Association. An ejection is when a coach calls out a player for having unsportsmanlike behavior that can range from threats to physical violence. This year, Oregon’s boys soccer teams have accumulated 198 ejections -- a nearly 45% increase from last year. Peter Weber is the executive director of the Oregon School Activities Association. Michael Nolan is the athletic director of Ida B. Wells High School. They both join us now to discuss what's driving these increases and what's being done to address them.

There was no room for error as Rath National School and Scoil Bhride Clonaslee met in the Wildcard Round of the LaoisToday Schools QuizCast. Clonaslee had reached this stage after defeating Newtown in Round 1 but losing to The Heath in Round 2. While Rath NS had lost to Timahoe NS in Round 1 but beaten Holy Family in Round 2. Rath NS were represented for a third time by Michael Behan, Aoife Murphy and Michael Nolan. While back for Clonaslee again were Will Murray, Oran McEvoy and Donnachadh Owens. This one was close early on and keep an eye out for the final list where both teams go a considerable way towards completing it.
Rath National School and Holy Family were involved in a dramatic encounter as Round 2 of the LaoisToday Schools QuizCast got underway. This was a winner takes all clash with the loser out for this year and the victor into Round 3. And with everything on the line, the sides produced a stunning battle that had, after another stewards inquiry, to be decided by a tiebreak. Rath were once again represented by Michael Behan, Aoife Murphy and Michael Nolan while Holy Family shuffled their pack. In came Carrie Gorman, Alex Korovesi and Dylan Lawlor who performed brilliantly. We initially thought that Holy Family had won but then realised that we had incorrectly marked an answer that Rath gave as wrong. We thought Dungarvan was the county town of Waterford but it turns out - surprise, surprise - the children know more than us! Prior to the merger of Waterford County Council with Waterford City Council in 2014, Dungarvan WAS the county town and administrative centre of County Waterford - but that is now Waterford City which Rath NS said. A tiebreaker was quickly arranged and Rath came through.
There was huge drama as Scoil Mhuire Fatima Timahoe and Rath National School clashed in Round 1 of the LaoisToday Schools Quiz Cast. Ruairi Bowe, Daisy Ramsbottom and Lucy Scully were on duty for Timahoe while Michael Behan, Aoife Murphy and Michael Nolan competed for Rath. There was serious drama in this one as a mistake on our end meant that Timahoe were incorrectly awarded the win in the first recording of the contest. But like Laois when Mick Turley kicked the point that never was against Carlow, Timahoe graciously offered Rath a replay. In the end, it came down to who could remember the 16 teams who competed in the 2023 Laois senior football championship the best. Timahoe did advance at the second time of asking but Rath are still alive and will be a tough battle for anyone in the Qualifier section. Timahoe now go through to Round 2 where one more win will book their place in our Grand Final in the Dunamaise Arts Centre on Friday, March 1. All episodes of the LaoisToday QuizCast are available to download and listen to in Podcast format.

Semiconductor devices are everywhere, with almost 80% of the Irish population having a smartphone - not to mention any number of other computer devices. And not only is their presence in modern life ubiquitous, but the way in which these devices are produced is also astonishing - being created through a painstaking process requiring single atoms to be removed one by one. Joining Jonathan to discuss the challenges and solutions involved in making semiconductors is Michael Nolan, Principal Scientist at Tyndall National Institute, where he leads the Materials Modelling for Devices activity in the MNS Centre.

Michael E. Nolan was born in Royal Oak, Michigan, but grew up in Columbus, Ohio. He is the son of an Irish-American sailor who married a beautiful Puerto Rican from a good family. His dad would spend a few decades, after leaving the Navy and having a stint at the University of Michigan, engaged in various creative entrepreneurial endeavours until he eventually became a farrier, invented the Nolan Hoof Plate, and enjoyed some modest success towards the end of his days. The entrepreneurial roller coaster of his father's life, however, was offset by Michael's mother who provided the family with some stability through her own employment at the Ohio State University and the support of her family back in Puerto Rico.Once he turned eighteen, Michael joined the military as an infantryman and eventually served in the Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserves, and the Army National Guard between the years 1990 to 2016. During his military service, he participated in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Operation Provide Promise/Deny Flight, and United Nations Operation Somalia with 1st Battalion, 8th Marines. With the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines he participated in Joint Task Force Six along the U.S.-Mexican border. He also did two tours in Iraq, first with the 1452nd Transportation Company in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 04-05, and then with the 3rd Battalion, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat Team in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 07-08. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal (3 awards), Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal (7 awards), and the Combat Infantryman's Badge among others.During this time, Michael graduated magna cum laude in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Franklin University. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree (2006) from the University of Phoenix as well as a Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy (2013) from The Eisenhower School at National Defense University where Michael was an Afghanistan/Pakistan Fellow and a member of the Land Combat Systems industry study. He also has almost twenty years of civilian service in both the defence and intelligence arenas that included roles as the Chief Financial Officer for the standup of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency as well as a Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Defense of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.Having been raised by an entrepreneur and seeing first-hand how to start, build, and eventually sell a business, Michael was always tinkering with businesses of his own. This ranged from ventures as diverse as farrier services to a business brokerage. Michael's passion, however, always seemed to lie with financial related endeavours. He found success helping clients in both real estate and as a foreign exchange proprietary trader before settling into the management of his own portfolio and shifting his attention to writing. Now, Michael focuses his time and efforts on producing high-quality content focused on the warrior tradition. When he's not working, Michael enjoys spending time practising the martial arts. He is a lifelong martial artist having studied various arts from all over the world but focusing his efforts primarily on the Chinese martial arts. He studied Wing Chun and Tai Chi from Dr Fred Ming-An Wu starting in 1983 until Dr Wu's death in 2000, excepting periods of military service. Currently, Michael studies Shuai Chiao in Northern Virginia under Master Nick Masi, a student of Dr Daniel Chi-hsiu Weng, himself a top disciple of the world-renowned Grandmaster Chang Tung-Sheng. Guest Abhishek Sharma Panelists Eriol Fox Richard Littauer Perrie Ojemeh Memo Esparza Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain Open Source Design! The podcast where we talk about sustaining open source with design. Learn how we, as designers, interface with open source in a sustainable way, how we integrate into different communities, and how we as coders, work with other designers. Our special guest today is Abhishek Sharma, who is the head of a design company called ColoredCow. He is currently managing one of the open source projects called Glific, which is a WhatsApp based open source communication platform for NGOs to have conversations with their community. Abhishek shares his journey of self-discovery when he realized he really enjoyed design and problem solving, and not engineering. He tells us about his role as Community Manager at Glific, and how listening to the communities is very important for designers who want to make meaningful, impactful products. We learn about what he wants to do in the future for the open source space with designers and he shares some “best practices” for designers to be able to collaborate with NGOs more. Go ahead and download this episode now to find out more! [00:01:55] Abhishek tells us what he does and his role at ColoredCow and Glific [00:03:43] With Abhishek taking on so many different job titles and job positions, Eriol wonders how Abhishek manages his time and makes sure he's doing each of the roles well, and does he see other designers in open source doing this as well. [00:07:08] We find out how Abhishek's started to engage in creative projects and the path leading to where he is today. [00:10:37] How does Abhishek engage the kinds of people that Glific is most useful for? [00:14:52] Perrie asks Abhishek based on him working on the community engagement part if he thinks getting people together and then giving them space to learn, if that will increase the adoption of products. [00:16:54] Memo wonders how Abhishek interacts with this open source culture in his organization with design. [00:18:36] How does Abhishek view himself as a Designer as well as a Community Manager? [00:20:13] Eriol shares their thoughts on what Richard and Abhishek were talking about with the role of the Community Manager and listening to communities. [00:23:09] Abhishek shares how he wants to engage designers in the open source space in the future. Also, he talks about how a lot of designers want to know everything before they start producing something. [00:29:56] We learn from Abhishek what the “best practices” are that designers have to learn to be able to collaborate with NGOs more. [00:32:24] Find out where you follow Abhishek on the internet. Quotes [00:07:41] “And I did a quick self-discovery where I wanted, I drew some Venn diagrams, figured out, okay, this is what I'm good at.” [00:08:37] “I was really not good at it at the beginning, I was just full of ambition that: okay, this is what I wanted to do.” [00:10:48] “I have started seeing my role as equating product management to actually being this community facilitator, and engagement creator for lack of a better word.” [00:11:48] “It's not really the tech or the solution, it's really about the problem that the NGOs are solving, so it kind of gives them a space or the topic that there is a need with.” [00:12:27] “We are actively building a support channel and community space where these NGOs can interact with each other, with their team, development team, design team, support team, and with each other so they can learn from each other.” [00:18:47] “The thing that happens as a Community Manager role is it keeps increasing your empathy towards the users, towards the space, because as a designer, what I need to do is solve problems.” [00:19:42] “I feel this role of being a Community Manager and listening to the communities is very important for all designers out there who want to make meaningful impactful products.” [00:21:33] “I if you're not telling the right story of the product, then also you lose a lot of the impact of the product.” [00:26:29] “What ends up happening is when you create you first learn, but when you learn you're not creating.” [00:26:43] “It's like a math problem: you can't solve a problem just by reading math, you have to actually solve those problems.” Spotlight [00:33:56] Memo's spotlight is a resource repository model called Nice Very Nice. Guest Kavita Kapoor Panelists Eric Berry | Eriol Fox | Alyssa Wright | Richard Littauer Show Notes Hello and welcome to Sustain! The podcast where we talk about sustaining open source for the long haul. Our special guest today is Kavita Kapoor, Founding Member and Strategy Director of the Federation of Humanitarian Technologists. Kavita tells us all about the Federation of Humanitarian Technologists, how things are going there since they started, and a project they started. We learn from Kavita why she thinks it's important that children learn about technology, she gives incredible advice on how a tech person can get involved with the humanitarian efforts, and why it's important to live your mission and visions. She also tells us her perspective and shares a personal story on the lack of gender diversity in tech jobs, as well as not enough LGBTQ plus spaces for the tech community especially in the UK. Kavita is amazing, so go ahead and download this episode to hear more! [00:03:11] Kavita tells us all about her herself, her involvement in the Shorinji Kempo martial art, and how she met Mike Nolan, who is the other Founding Member of the Federations of Humanitarian Technologists. [00:05:45] We learn all about the Federation of Humanitarian Technologists. [00:07:45] Kavita talks about how they hired their first Humanitarian Aid Director and how everything is going there. [00:09:55] Eric wonders where those lines cross in open source versus what Kavita is working with humanitarian efforts. [00:13:00] Eriol asks Kavita if open source software and the open source community offer more opportunities for these Non-governmental organizations and charities to build capacity around their technology. [00:15:24] Find out why Kavita thinks it's important that children learn about technology, and whether open source can be part of that education and how early should it be. [00:19:13] Richard wonders why Kavita is so interested in the membership organizations such as OpenUK and the Federation of Humanitarian Technologists. [00:21:33] Eric tells Kavita she is a powerhouse and wonders how she has time to do the things that she's doing and also wonders if she has any other passions. [00:22:30] From the technologist side, Kavita tells us how a tech person can get involved with the humanitarian efforts such as hers and do that in a sustainable way for them, emotionally as well as financially. [00:26:43] Eriol asks to hear Kavita's perspective on things that she's witnessed when people with tech skills do get engaged with these kinds of projects, but the barriers that she's perceived and the ones that she's tried to knock down so they can participate. She talks about gender diversity and not enough LQBTQ plus spaces for the technology community, especially in the UK. [00:31:54] Find out where you can follow Kavita online. Quotes [00:06:40] “And I think it's what we all realized when we work for organizations of different scales is that it's really difficult sometimes to scale up and have the infrastructure, especially when you're working on projects that are all funded for the end goal, for the end impact.” [00:17:31] “So I went off and became COO of the Micro:bit Educational Foundation and we went around the world. We went to into sixty countries during my tenure. We went from a million devices in the UK that was given away free, four million devices around the world, and some of the kids that we worked with were incredible.” [00:19:59] “But actually, when I've been working for profit organizations, I've never felt that I could have the impact that I wanted to have or have the access to the power structures that I wanted to have so that we could actually do more good.” [00:20:25] “But the bottom line is always about where the money is.” [00:20:43] “You have to live your mission and visions.” [00:23:41] “I find it crazy at the moment that we've got so many people out of work who have tech skills and so many open tech positions and I'm trying to figure out what that gap is.” [00:24:44] “It is really where your starting point is, but you can always do something, and you can always negotiate with your teams at work to get some bandwidth.” Spotlight [00:32:24] Eric's spotlight is a new program that just launched called FundOSS. [00:33:53] Eriol's spotlight is a project called Chayn. [00:34:42] Alyssa's spotlight is being thankful that her computer is working. [00:35:02] Richard's** **spotlight is the National LGTB Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC). [00:35:58] Kavita's spotlight is Software Conservancy. The Irondequoit Podcast Ep.005 - INTERVIEW with Michael Nolan by Daniel Molinari
The immediate occasion for this series was the CBC's 50th anniversary in 1986. Public broadcasting in Canada had actually begun four years before the date we were celebrating, with the creation of the Canadian Radio Broadcasting Commission (CRBC) by the Conservative government of R.B. Bennett in 1932. But this first attempt was criticized by the the Liberal opposition — for political bias— and by the Radio League, the popular organization that had lobbied for its creation — for poor programming. When Mackenzie King's Liberals replaced the Conservatives in 1936, they reorganized the public broadcaster as a crown corporation with a supposedly "arms length" relationship to the government of the day. They called their new creation the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation — the "corpse," as it was sometimes later jokingly known — and it made its first broadcast, from a transmitter in Watrous, Saskatchewan, on Nov. 2, 1936. The 50th anniversary gave me a welcome chance to review some of its history and to interview many of the pioneers who had built, first, the radio service, and then, after 1952, the country's first television network. The series began with an exploration of the origins of public broadcasting in Canada. Luckily, while living in Ottawa in 1978, I had recorded an interview with Graham Spry, one of the leaders of the campaign to establish a public broadcaster in the late 1920's and early 1930's. Graham died in 1983, and, having this interview was invaluable to me in constructing this first episode. The second show dealt with the so-called golden age of radio, when the CBC became Canada's first truly national cultural institution. The third was about the beginnings of television , the epochal Radio Canada strike of 1959, and the battle over Preview Commentary, a radio commentary which was cancelled, in 1959, as a result of political pressure from by the Diefenbaker government, and then reinstated under strong counter-pressure from its producers and the public. The fourth was entirely devoted to the story of This Hour Has Seven Days, the wildly popular current affairs programme that the CBC cancelled in 1966. The final episode concerned the regulation of public broadcasting in Canada, initially the task of the CBC itself, but, after the Conservative government of John Diefenbaker reformed the CBC and allowed private television broadcasting in 1958, the job of the Board of Broadcast Governors (BBG), and then, from 1968 to the present, Canadian Television and Radio Commission (CRTC). This last programme was twice partially reconstructed to create a more up-to-day conclusion when the series was re-broadcast in 1996, for the 60th anniversary, and again in 2006, for the 70th, but here I have included the original 1986 ending. Some of the material was drawn from the archives, where Ken Puley, as always, was an invaluable help, but happily, in 1986, a lot of the people who built the CBC were still alive and willing to reminisce with me. Here is a list of those I was able to interview:#1 - Harry Boyle, Graham Spry, Frank Peers, Michael Nolan, Orville Shugg, and James Finlay#2 - Neil Morrison, Lister Sinclair, Harry Boyle, Davidson Dunton, Orville Shugg, Marjorie McEnaney, Helen Carscallen, Alan Thomas, Frank Peers, Bernard Trotter, and Robert Fulford#3 - Fernand Quirion, Jean Louis Roux, Alphonse Ouimet, Robert Fulford, Lister Sinclair, Barbara Fairbairn, Frank Peers, and Gordon Cullingham#4 - Hugh Gauntlett, Patrick Watson, Alphonse Ouimet, Laurier Lapierre, Douglas Leiterman, Reeves Haggan, Warner Troyer, Helen Carscallen, Eric Koch, Roy Faibish, and Peter Campbell#5 Harry Boyle, Graham Spry, Frank Peers, Davidson Dunton, Alphonse Ouimet, Robert Fulford, Eugene Forsey, Herschel Hardin, Laurent Picard, Hugh Gauntlett, and Al Johnson

On the way they entered a Samaritan village to prepare for his reception there, but they would not welcome him because the destination of his journey was Jerusalem. When the disciples James and John saw this they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” Jesus turned and rebuked them, and they journeyed to another village. As they were proceeding on their journey someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” Jesus answered him, “Foxes have dens and birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.” And to another he said, “Follow me.” But he replied, “Lord, let me go first and bury my father.” But he answered him, “Let the dead bury their dead. But you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” And another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but first let me say farewell to my family at home.” To him Jesus said, “No one who sets a hand to the plow and looks to what was left behind is fit for the kingdom of God.”
