The DINKS are back with another amazing guest this week!  We had the honor of spending some time with Dr. Ed Zuckerberg.  He attributes his early investments in CAD/CAM technology to helping to launch his son Mark's interest in computers which later lead to the founding of Facebook.  So, he may know a thing or two about social media and investing in new technologies that will change the way we diagnose and treat patients.   He's a great dentist in New York and has an exciting new venture that could really enhance the dental-medical relationship via evaluating the Oral Systemic connection.About our guest:Edward J. Zuckerberg, D.D.S.,F.A.G.D. is a 1978 Graduate of NYU College of Dentistry. He owned his own practices in Brooklyn and Dobbs Ferry, NY from 1979-2013 and has always been an early adopter of technology, introducing his first PC in the office in 1986 and completely fully networking his home-based office with broadband access in 1996. Dr. Zuckerberg's early adoption of technologies including digital radiography, CAD/CAM & creation of a paperless office caught the attention of Industry leaders who enlisted him to lecture, write articles and beta test new technologies. The advanced technology in the home helped launch his son, Mark's, the founder of Facebook, interest in computers. With his wife of 43 years, Karen, a retired Psychiatrist, they also have 3 daughters, Randi, former Marketing Director at Facebook and now CEO of Zuckerberg Media, Donna, who received her Classics Ph.D at Princeton and is now an author and editor of the online publication, Eidolon, featuring a modern way to write about the ancient world & Arielle, who is a partner in a Financial Firm in San Francisco, as well as 7 grandchildren. About this episode This week we are featuring Randi Zuckerberg, founder of Zuckerberg Media. If her last name sounds familiar, it should. It's also the last name of her little brother who had a startup about a book of faces or Facebook or something like that. Randi Zuckerberg is an entrepreneur, investor, best selling author, and Emmy-nominated tech media personality. She is the founder and CEO of Zuckerberg Media, with the mission of supporting current and future entrepreneurs through investment, mentorship, and media. Growing up she wanted to be a Broadway actress, yet while in college she had to pivot from that dream to pursue a career in advertising. But what I love about the stories of many of the founders this show highlights, is that we always find our way back to our passion, in one form or another. Like every Startup Story founder, we need to go back to the early days to find out what life was like for Randi before Facebook LIVE, before two best-selling books, and before receiving two Tony awards. You'll soon hear how her beginning wasn't all that different from others who have come before her. This is Randi' Zuckerberg's startup story. In this episode, you'll hear: Her aspirations of becoming an actress and how those dreams got crushed early on About creating her first ad campaign for the Special Olympics The transition from working in an ad agency to working for Facebook and becoming the creator of Facebook LIVE About the time she received a call from the producers of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages and the start of her Broadway career How her experiences have taught her that none of us have just one calling and there are so many chapters and phases of our lives, each with different callings Her realization that her best skills were on the production side of the entertainment and Broadway industry; and how she began to apply those skills as an entrepreneur The founding of Zuckerberg Media and Randi's hopes and ambitions for her venture Resources from this episode Join Grindology: https://grindology.com/ ExpressVPN: Get 3 Months Free → https://www.expressvpn.com/startupstory Get Emails: https://app.getemails.com/referrals/newaccount?ref=R18HWW5 The Startup Story Inner Circle: https://www.thestartupstory.co/vip The Startup Story on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/thestartupstory The Startup Story is now on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/jamesmckinney The Startup Story on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thestartupstory Zuckerberg Media: https://www.zuckerbergmedia.com/ Michael Littig, Zuckerberg Institute: https://www.thestartupstory.co/zuckerberginstitute Share the podcast The Startup Story community has been so incredible in sharing our podcast with others, and we thank you! EP72: Ageism In The Workplace with Randi Zuckerberg

MelissaBPhD's podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 27, 2021 9:03

Age is just a number. But in the workplace, your age can have a negative impact - maybe you were passed over for that promotion because your boss thinks you're “too young”. Or maybe you feel that you weren't hired for a position because the organization implied you were “too old”. Either way - this is ageism and we need to be more aware of it so we can address it. In data released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is predicted that by the year 2024, workers aging 55 and older will represent 25 percent of the United States workforce. This trend will permeate many industries - and requires developing policies and protocols against stereotyping and age-related discrimination for people of all ages. In this episode of This is Getting Old podcast, I share the screen with investor, performer, media entrepreneur and "professional mom to startups" Randi Zuckerberg and engage in an insightful conversation on ageism in the workplace. Key points discussed in this episode: ✔️ The truth about aging women in tech. The culture continues that tech startups are mainly for young people. ✔️ Why starting a business late in life can be an advantage. Despite the industry being youth-centric, Randi posits that instead of feeling insecure about that, entrepreneurs should think of that as a competitive advantage with wisdom and experience to lean on. "You have such a bigger Rolodex at age 40 than you had at age 20 of contacts who you could hire or work with or partner or raise money from." ✔️ Seniors have high spending power. Women at 65 and older are the cornerstones of purchasing decisions in many households in an age where they have disposable income from their career, and they're using it. According to Randi, this age group is also driving so much tech adoption and the fastest growing demographic on social media. "I think it is a smart business decision to think about that woman as your customer. And I think more businesses are getting savvy to the fact that not only can they not ignore that customer, but they should also focus a lot of their efforts on her." Connect with Randi Zuckerberg Randi likes to call herself "a professional mom to entrepreneurs" because nothing gives her greater joy than working closely with startups and founders. Through her company, Zuckerberg Media, she has created award-winning content and experiences that educate families and bring to light digital literacy and safety issues. She is the best selling author of four books, producer of multiple television shows and theater productions, and hosts a weekly radio show on SiriusXM. Randi has been recognized with an Emmy nomination, two Tony Awards, a Drama Desk Award, and a Kidscreen Award. Before founding her own company, Randi was an early employee at Facebook, where she is best known for creating Facebook Live, now used by more than two billion people around the globe. When she's not Facebooking or actual written-word booking, she can be found at the theater, on the golf course (newly obsessed golfer,) travelling the world (physically or virtually) to speak at conferences or doing her best to unplug at home with her husband and three children. Randi Zuckerberg, my guest this week, certainly does it all — she’s an entrepreneur, investor, bestselling author, tech media personality, and occasional Broadway performer. Behind that impressive resumé is a woman who understands that you can do it all — but not all in one day or even one season of life. She believes you can do everything you want to do, but over a long period of time. After Harvard rejected her for the music program, Randi set aside her love of music to pursue a degree in psychology, followed by a career in technology, which ultimately led to her role as Director of Market Development at Facebook. Years after she thought she’d left music behind, Broadway came calling, and Randi lived her lifelong dream of performing. In this interview, Randi shares the philosophy behind “Pick Three,” and how she’s incorporated this idea when choosing what to focus on in her life. In this episode, you'll hear About her childhood, being raised by doctors who had a true entrepreneur spirit, as well as some of the things she learned from them Her aspirations of becoming an actress and how those dreams got crushed early on Randi's experience pursuing a Psychology degree at Harvard and how college was a place of soul-searching What she did after graduating from college, including working at a top ad agency and being placed on the digital marketing team The fact that you can be an entrepreneur even inside the biggest company on Earth About creating her first ad campaign for the Special Olympics The transition from working in an ad agency to working for Facebook and becoming the creator of Facebook LIVE About the time she received a call from the producers of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages and the start of her Broadway career How her experiences have taught her that none of us have just one calling and there are so many chapters and phases of our lives, each with different callings Her realization that her best skills were on the production side of the entertainment and Broadway industry; and how she began to apply those skills as an entrepreneur The founding of Zuckerberg Media and Randi's hopes and ambitions for her venture “Anyone who has a platform must consider how they can use that platform for a greater good.” —Randi Zuckerberg, Zuckerberg Media Resources from this episode Throughout the month of January we are highlighting the mission of Destiny Rescue. Welcome to the inaugural episode of the new See It To Be It podcast, formerly On The Spot with Melinda Garvey! Our very first guest is Randi Zuckerberg, an inspiration and advocate for women in tech everywhere. While Facebook was still just a start-up, Randi was there from the beginning helping out Mark Zuckerberg with marketing. By the end of her time there, she created Facebook Live, the social network's first introduction to live broadcasting. One of the biggest challenges she faced in Silicon Valley was the shockingly low amount of women in tech compared to her home in New York. She says "... the glass ceiling was really low. If I sat up I'm was gonna bump my head on it!." Since then, Randi has devoted so much of her work to teaching young girls interested in STEM, and investing in female-led start-ups. Most recently, she launched Zuckerberg Institute - the virtual hub for entrepreneur's that offers mentorship, online sessions to build important skills, and even small-group intensives and all-day seminars all with the same goal of helping you build your business. Randi's favorite job is being a mom to her 3 kids. Though she travels a lot, she always makes time to play boardgames with her husband and children, even if it's on Facetime! For more on Randi and the Zuckerberg Institute, visit: https://www.linkedin.com/in/randizuckerberg/ https://www.suestechkitchen.com https://www.zuckerbergmedia.com https://www.zuckerberginstitute.com Highlights "By the end of next year... there will be 1 million open technology jobs that are just sitting open, that can't be filled because there aren't enough people graduating with the skills and degrees to fill those jobs. So here we are sitting in maybe a recession economy with a million high-paying jobs just sitting open. It really is a crisis level of getting more young girls and women to focus on these areas." Randi Zuckerberg has an impressively diverse work history. She's famous for her role in the early years of Facebook, acting as the spokeswoman and Director of Market Development. But she's also an author, television producer, Broadway producer, and even a Broadway actress. She likes to think of herself as “well lopsided”, adding that great accomplishments don't often come from your typical nine-to-five work. It's a healthy imbalance she wants women in the workforce to embrace. In her book Pick Three, she talks about how women really can have it all; family, friends, work, fitness, sleep… just not all on the same day. “I loved every moment of working in Silicon Valley and with Facebook. The only thing that I did not love was pretty much being the only woman in every room that I was in for a decade. And that was something that I started to really question and think about. How is it that we're building these global companies, but everyone in the room looks identical?” Learn more about The Journey at mission.org/thejourney. Randi Zuckerberg is a true renaissance woman. Her long list of achievements includes working at Facebook in marketing for more than 6 years, producing shows on Broadway and founding Zuckerberg Media. She knows what it means to prioritize multiple projects at once and excel at each. Since leaving Facebook, Randi founded Zuckerberg Media, where her focus is bringing more young girls and women into the technology industry and STEM at large. “I knew once my work was complete with Facebook that the second chapter of my career would really be around getting more women in the room and changing what the upper executives of this company looks like,” Randi says. Her new book, Pick Three: You Can Have It All (Just Not Every Day), speaks to her personal life philosophy. “I’m really not a fan of the term ‘being well balanced,’” Randi says. “I don't think anyone has ever done anything they were proud on in life while being well balanced, so I give myself permission to be well lop-sided. Whatever I’m focusing on in the moment that I want to be great at, it's going to mean prioritizing that thing and saying no other things.” Ultimately, Randi summarizes, you can have it all but you have to prioritize and pick three things you want to focus on each day, whether it’s work, family, or your personal health. On this episode of Mission Daily, Chad and Randi sit down to discuss how she is managing her various projects, career mistakes and what she has learned from them along the way, and her personal mission to be ‘well-lopsided’ in life. — Mission Daily and all of our podcasts are created with love by our team at Mission.org. Randi Zuckerberg - creator of Facebook LIVE, Facebook Fan Pages (and countless other Facebook products), CEO/Founder of Zuckerberg Media, host of Dot Complicated on SiriusXM radio, visionary behind Sue’s Tech Kitchen, and NYT best selling author of 4 books including most recently, “Pick Three” talks about how Facebook LIVE was created during a creative exercise called Hack-a-thons, and how "we take a lot of time to nurture other aspects of health and emotional well being, and not enough time to exercise creativity." Randi is a major force and advocate for woman in business and fostering young girls interest in science and technology. Her movement and influence is growing with the support of her media company Zuckerberg Media which produces content and creates characters that girls can identify with (such as Dot) as well as bringing new ideas to make tech fun for children and families (Sue’s Tech Kitchen). She mentions that we’re all creative but it gets beaten out of us in school, at work, etc. and that we need to give people permission to be creative. A great example of this; her team at Facebook was called, “Consumer Marketing”. No one knew what it really meant. Being the one to create and spearhead many ideas (Facebook Fan pages) she became the "go-to" for all things creative. She realized it couldn’t scale with her involved in all the brainstorming meetings, so she changed name to “CREATIVE Marketing” which 10X’d everyones ideas and made her team more creative! He is the Chief Political Anchor for Fox News Channel and the Anchor and Executive Editor of Special Report with Bret Baier. He has previously served Fox News as Chief White House Correspondent, and as National Security Correspondent based at the Pentagon. He has reported from seventy-four countries, and has reported from Iraq twelve times and Afghanistan thirteen times. He is the author of the New York Times bestsellers THREE DAYS IN JANUARY: DWIGHT EISENHOWER'S FINAL MISSION—a #1 Wall Street Journal and Publishers Weekly bestseller—and SPECIAL HEART: A JOURNEY OF FAITH, HOPE, COURAGE, AND LOVE. He received the National Press Foundation's 2017 Sol Taishoff Award for Excellence in Broadcast Journalism. His new book THREE DAYS IN MOSCOW: RONALD REAGAN AND THE FALL OF THE SOVIET EMPIRE could not be more timely as tensions between the U.S. and Russia flare up…it's insightful to revisit the historic role Ronald Reagan contributed to his country – ending the Cold War without the firing of a single shot. The end of the Cold War is perhaps the defining historical moment of the past half century, and it must be understood if we are to make sense of America's place in the world today. Baier convincingly argues that Reagan's essential role in ending the Cold War is too little appreciated. RANDI ZUCKERBERG is a force to be reckoned with. She is a New York Times bestselling author, the founder and CEO of Zuckerberg Media and host of “Dot Complicated” on SiriusXM, inspired by her book of the same name. Before branching out on her own, Randi was the director of marketing for Facebook where she helped to launch Facebook Live and other major marketing initiatives. She's also been on Broadway and, as a trained opera singer, oftentimes incorporates her singing talents into her speeches.
