Women have a fourfold increase in risk of autoimmune disorders than men and 80% of the people who have autoimmune issues are women. Some autoimmune disorders are triggered during the perimenopausal through postmenopausal time frame (30-60 years of age). While more research is needed, it is proposed that sex hormones, the microbiome, environmental factors, and the X chromosome may be very much connected to autoimmune disorders in women. It is broadly known and accepted by many functional medical doctors, but not so much in the conventional healthcare model, that consuming gluten causes a leaky gut that leads to gut dysbiosis that can then lead to chronic inflammation and autoimmune disorders. Should midlife women stop eating gluten during the menopause transition and beyond? Would doing that support better skin, brain health, gut health, weight loss, healthy hair growth, and heart health? Let's find out.My guest is Dr. Tom O'Bryan, who comes with many accolades- too many to list. Here are some highlights: He is a doctor of chiropractic and clinical nutritionist a member of and on the teaching faculty board of The Institute for Functional Medicine, the International & American Associations of Clinical Nutritionists, the American Chiropractic Association, and the International Academy of Preventive Medicine. He is a recognized world expert on gluten and its impact on health. He is an internationally recognized and sought-after speaker and workshop leader specializing in the complications of Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity, Celiac Disease, and the development of Autoimmune Diseases.Dr. O'Bryan is on a mission to educate patients and healthcare practitioners across the globe about the many possible manifestations of non-celiac gluten sensitivity and celiac disease and why patients with gluten-related disorders require treatment programs that go beyond just a gluten-free diet.Medical Disclaimer:By listening to this podcast, you agree not to use this podcast as medical advice or to make any lifestyle changes to treat any medical condition in yourself or others. Title: "Navigating Nerve Pain: My Journey with Chiropractic Care" Hey there, podcast listeners! Join me on a personal exploration of the relationship between nerve pain and chiropractic care in this episode. I've been intrigued by the increasing popularity of chiropractic treatments, but I've also heard some stories about people feeling worse after their sessions. So, let's dive in together and uncover the facts. In the world of nerve pain, also known as neuropathy, chiropractic care is often considered a holistic approach to finding relief. I'll share some interesting stats from a recent survey conducted by the American Chiropractic Association, where a whopping 87% of respondents reported satisfaction with chiropractic treatment for nerve-related issues. However, the burning question remains: Can nerve pain actually get worse after a chiropractic adjustment? We'll explore potential reasons behind these experiences, from misaligned expectations to the skill and expertise of the chiropractor. Throughout the episode, I'll highlight positive aspects of chiropractic care for nerve pain, drawing on studies that showcase its efficacy. According to the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, chiropractic adjustments significantly reduce pain intensity and improve function in patients with chronic low back pain, often associated with nerve-related problems. But let's not ignore the flip side. I'll touch on instances where patients have reported temporary discomfort after adjustments and why communication with your chiropractor is crucial. It's all about managing expectations and choosing the right professional for your unique needs. Join me as we unravel the complexities of chiropractic care, discussing its role in restoring proper spinal alignment, reducing nerve irritation, and improving overall well-being. Along the way, I'll share personal stories and anecdotes to make this journey relatable and insightful. Remember, individual responses to chiropractic care can vary. That's why consulting with a healthcare professional is vital for finding the most suitable approach for your specific condition. It's all about informed decision-making and understanding that healing is a unique process for each of us. So, whether you've been curious about chiropractic care for nerve pain or you're navigating your own journey, this episode is packed with valuable insights. Could chiropractic care be the missing piece in your quest for relief from nerve pain? The dilemma of whether chiropractors can fix herniated discs is a common concern for individuals in their late 20s to early 30s facing back pain. 1. Understanding Herniated Discs and the Young Adult Perspective: Lower back pain is no stranger to individuals in their late 20s to early 30s, often attributed to a sedentary lifestyle, poor posture, or injury. Herniated discs, also known as slipped discs, occur when the soft interior of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the tough exterior. Contrary to popular belief, this ailment is not exclusive to the elderly. According to a study by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 45% of all herniated disc cases occur in individuals aged 20 to 50. 2. Chiropractic Care: A Non-Invasive Approach to Herniated Discs: Chiropractors are healthcare professionals who specialize in diagnosing and treating mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. The American Chiropractic Association reports that over 35 million Americans seek chiropractic care annually for various conditions, including back pain. Chiropractors use manual adjustments and other techniques to align the spine, with the goal of reducing pain and improving functionality. 3. Effectiveness of Chiropractic Care: Statistics Speak Louder Than Words: The effectiveness of chiropractic care in treating herniated discs is supported by compelling statistics. According to a study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, 90% of patients with lumbar disc herniation experienced significant improvement after receiving chiropractic spinal manipulation. This evidence suggests that chiropractic care can be a viable alternative to surgery, especially for the younger demographic seeking relief from lower back pain. 4. Preventing Surgery: Chiropractic Care as a First Line of Defense: One of the most appealing aspects of chiropractic care is its non-invasive nature, making it an attractive option for those wary of surgical interventions. Chiropractors focus on addressing the root cause of the issue, aiming to restore proper spinal alignment and alleviate pressure on the affected disc. By doing so, they not only provide relief but also potentially circumvent the need for surgery. A study in the Spine Journal found that patients who chose chiropractic care as their initial treatment had a lower likelihood of undergoing surgery compared to those who opted for traditional medical care. 5. The Chiropractor's Role in Lower Back Pain Prevention: Beyond treating existing herniated discs, chiropractors play a crucial role in preventing lower back pain from becoming a chronic issue. Through a combination of spinal adjustments, exercise recommendations, and lifestyle advice, chiropractors empower patients to take an active role in their spinal health. This proactive approach can be particularly beneficial for young adults looking to maintain a healthy spine and prevent future issues. Conclusion: A Path Towards a Pain-Free Future: In conclusion, the question of whether chiropractors can fix herniated discs is met with a resounding affirmation. The statistics, coupled with real-life success stories, attest to the effectiveness of chiropractic care as a non-invasive and potentially surgery-preventing solution for lower back pain. For individuals in their late 20s to early 30s grappling with herniated discs, exploring chiropractic care may offer a path towards a pain-free future. Before making any decisions, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice tailored to individual circumstances. In addition to that, he has an extensive background in healthcare as well as marketing. Interestingly, it's the marketing side of his background which is why we invited him on the show today! Of the many things that go into health coaching businesses, it's often the business stuff that many coaches are least looking forward to. That is, the average health coach LOVES talking about various dietary approaches, looking at and analyzing labs, as well as guiding people along their journey to new and improved health! However, when it comes to actually attracting those clients they otherwise love to work with, that part can get a bit messy. In comes Dr. Al! During this episode of The Health Detective Podcast, Dr. Al helps us understand the psychology behind why some clients say "Yes", and why others say "No". And, just to be clear, this does NOT MEAN this is an episode on how to sell people expensive health coaching packages that they DIDN'T NEED OR WEREN'T READY FOR. What we are referring to specifically in this episode is how to get people who you KNOW you can help and who you realize would be EXCELLENT for your program to say YES so that both you and the client can win. Does all this sound good? Then the episode itself will sound even better! Listen now and let us know what you think or ask us questions by reaching out on Instagram @fdntraining. Welcome to Have A Crack, where I explore the evolving landscape of healthcare and delve into alternative approaches to pain management. In today's episode, join us as we unravel the growing trend of chiropractic care and its appeal, featuring real-life stories and evidence-based insights. In this episode, I delve into the appeal of chiropractic care, exploring why it has become a growing trend in healthcare. With approximately 35 million Americans seeking chiropractic care annually, according to the American Chiropractic Association, and a steady rise reported by the British Chiropractic Association in the United Kingdom, we explore the non-invasive nature of chiropractic care, providing a drug-free and surgery-free option for those grappling with back pain. A cornerstone of chiropractic care's popularity lies in its evidence-based foundation. Unlike some alternative therapies, chiropractic care is rooted in scientific studies supporting its efficacy in managing musculoskeletal conditions. I unpack a 2018 study published in the Spine Journal, revealing that chiropractic care led to greater improvements in pain and function compared to standard medical care. Further adding to chiropractic care's credibility, the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK recommends manual therapy, including chiropractic care, for non-specific lower back pain. This endorsement from a reputable health organization reinforces chiropractic care as a viable option for relief without resorting to surgery or painkillers. As concerns about opioid addiction and the side effects of pain medication dominate the current healthcare landscape, we explore how chiropractic care offers a drug-free approach. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported nearly 50,000 opioid-related deaths in 2019, prompting a shift in public perception towards non-pharmacological options. Chiropractic care, with its emphasis on manual adjustments and rehabilitation exercises, emerges as a beacon of hope for those looking to avoid the pitfalls of opioid medications. Surgery is often viewed as a last resort for chronic back pain, with its invasive procedures and lengthy recovery periods. We examine a 2019 study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, demonstrating that chiropractic care can be a safe and effective alternative, reducing the need for surgery in many cases. However, as chiropractic care gains popularity, we emphasize the importance of informed decision-making. The Advertising Standards Agency in the UK has strict guidelines to prevent misleading claims in health-related advertising. We guide listeners on how to verify a chiropractor's adherence to evidence-based practices and professionalism through registration with the General Chiropractic Council and affiliations with reputable chiropractic associations. Are we witnessing a move towards more natural and preventive measures in healthcare? As we navigate this landscape, it is vital to stay informed, consult with healthcare professionals, and make decisions aligning with individual needs and preferences. Micronutrients are the nutrients our body needs in lesser amounts to grow and develop. These include vitamins and minerals, and our body cannot manufacture these, so we must obtain them thru diet and supplementation. There are water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins, macrominerals, and trace minerals. One of the best ways to look inside your cell to see what your nutrient status is is by taking a micronutrient test. This test tells you if your cells are stable, borderline deficient, or functionally deficient in a wide range of nutrients. You then want to correct these intracellular micronutrient deficiencies so that your cells are optimally working. If you go back to biology class, you remember that the mitochondria inside your cells are the powerhouses of energy produced for your body. Without functioning mitochondria, you don't have optimal energy being produced. Without optimal energy, you won't have healthy hair growth. After all, you don't need hair to survive. The only way to correct these deficiencies is through diet and supplementation. My returning guest today is Dr. Grabowski, a practicing Doctor of Chiropractic. He has over 40 years of clinical nutrition experience, presented over 1500 seminars and lectures on nutrition throughout the United States and in Europe, publishing several articles and a textbook on clinical nutrition. In addition, he is a Registered Dietitian and his dietetic experience includes tenure at some of the leading hospitals in the nation: The New York Hospital, Memorial Sloan-Kettering in New York City (affiliated with Cornell Medical Center), Memorial Care System, and the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.Dr. Grabowski has served on the State of Texas Governor's Childhood Obesity Taskforce and is a member of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Chiropractic Association, Texas Chiropractic Association and the Endocrine Society. In addition to his chiropractic practice, he has developed numerous vitamin and mineral formulas for supplement companies. In this week's episode, Dr. Jay and Brad are broadcasting from Anchorage Alaska where they were speakers at the Alaska Chiropratic Society's 50th anniversary. They set aside time to talk to two of of the associations's leaders about their home state and their vision for the society. Dr. Curzie received my undergraduate degree from La Salle University in Philadelphia, PA. I majored in biology with a minor in psychology. Dr. Franz was one of my favorite professors, offering guidance and excitement about my career choice. I chose to go to the fountainhead of Chiropractic, Palmer College of Chiropractic. My father and I visited the college and got to attend a rugby game. One of the players got injured on the field. A bunch of guys ran onto the field, one performed an adjustment on the player. He got up and ran into the game like nothing ever happened! My entire experience at Palmer was one I will never forget. I am still friends with many faculty and staff there and I still get great hugs from the ladies at the bookstore.Dr. Joel Adkins, DC The philosophy of chiropractic is so important to me that I spent over five years obtaining a degree in Chiropractic Philosophy. The power that made the body, heals the body explains much of what we do. The body knows how to function, it just needs no interference. I love adjusting children, they respond so well and so completely. Dr. Adkins, a lifelong Alaskan, graduated from Oregon State University in 1996 with a Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science and Human Performance with a focus on Sports Medicine. Dr. Adkins received his Doctorate in Chiropractic in 2001 from Palmer College of Chiropractic West in San Jose, CA. Currently, Dr. Adkins serves on the board of the Alaska Chiropractic Society, a member of the American Chiropractic Association, and Alaska's only certified Active Release Technique (ART) Instructor. AS a graduate of whiplash and brain traumatology from San Diego Spine Research Institute. He is eligible for Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician and also has Correction & Prescription Certification from the National Association of Sports Medicine. Dr. Adkins has spent thousands of hours as a team physician for football, basketball and soccer throughout the Anchorage community. In his free time, Dr. Adkins enjoys hunting, fishing, coaching, skiing and being with his family in and around Alaska
Hiring post-COVID is a whole different animal. We talk to Dr. Mark Sanna about how to find & keep great chiropractic employees in this new world. And in our Ask NCMIC segment, Mike Whitmer answers a question about standardized informed consent forms. Links to additional resources can be found below the Transcript. TRANSCRIPT: Mike Whitmer: Hello. Thank you for joining us for NC M I C'S Chiropractic, the podcast that helps doctors do more. I'm Mike Whitmer, NC M I C's, Vice President of Corporate Relations. Do you need to fill an office role? Good luck. Hiring in 2022 isn't the same as it was in 2019. Candidates are hard to find and when you do find someone you want to meet with, the tables are turned. They're going to interview you. Dr. Mark Santa has helped many, many chiropractors with issues around managing their practices of which hiring is a big part. (00:32) Dr. Santa is CEO of Breakthrough Coaching, an International Healthcare Practice Management consulting firm. Dr. Sanna teaches an outcome based, functionally oriented system of procedures focused on preparing healthcare providers for the prevention and wellness services in high demand in today's healthcare environment. He is a fellow of the International College of Chiropractors, a Foundation for Chiropractic Progress board member, the finance committee chairman for the Chiropractic Summit, and the Future of Chiropractic Strategic Plan Communications committee co-chair. Dr. Sanna, thank you for joining us on Chiropractical. Dr. Mark Sanna: Thank you for having me. Mike Whitmer: Dr. Sanna, we see the trends. People are quitting their jobs at record levels to seek greener pastures. Why is this happening? Dr. Mark Sanna: Mike, I think that the period that we've all gone through just recently with its challenges and the pandemic, really enabled many of us to take a harder look at not only what we do but why we do it. And so we have a period now that folks are referring to as the great resignation. I think maybe it was the great realization that the reason, the why we do what we do, is as important as how we're compensated for what we do. Mike Whitmer: Absolutely. I think that a lot of us had time on our hands and a lot of thinking and what kind of fulfillment. And like you say, more than a paycheck. Let's talk about some of the specifics about what's changed and how chiropractors can adapt. Let's start with finding good candidates for positions that you may have open. How has that changed? Dr. Mark Sanna: I think to go back to our original premise of why we do what we do, when I first came up in chiropractic practice, the rule was, you hired someone because they made your life easier, and that was the main reason for having an employee. Now we hire someone to compliment our skill sets, to fill in the gaps that we don't have. There's a great book called Traction, the Entrepreneurial Operating System, EOS, by a guy named Geno Wickman. And Geno likes to say it this way, and I think this fits exactly for chiropractors, is that your job in running your business is to be the visionary. You set the vision, you set where we're going, and you need something they call an integrator, somebody to get stuff done. And so filling in the gaps in your own personal organizational chart in a way that helps your organization move forward, grow, and also benefit not only you as the owner, but the employees as well, I think is really key. And so looking at hiring now is a lot different than just a job description or skill set. If you're hiring for skill set, you're going to be really limiting yourself in terms of the type of employee that you can really have to support you. Before you even think about hiring, take a good look at your core values as an organization, as a practice. What are we here to accomplish? And make sure that we hire folks that are in alignment with that value set. Mike Whitmer: So in this new environment, everything has changed, including the interview process. What's changed there? How do we approach interviews in this new environment? Dr. Mark Sanna: The internet has totally dramatically changed what the interview process used to be. You'd put an ad in the classifieds and folks would come in, they'd send resumes, et cetera. Now you put something out in Indeed or ZipRecruiter, and you get, no kidding, two, 300 responses. And out of those two, 300 responses, the folks who actually agree to maybe a group Zoom interview might be a third. So we're now down to a hundred or so. The hundred folks who say that they're going to come to that Zoom interview, maybe a half show up from that, maybe. Again, a half, we're down about 25 now, are maybe qualified for the job. And when you set the in-person interview, if you're lucky, four show up, and the rest just ghost you, they're totally gone. And so you're there, "Is there something wrong with me?" And there's not. It's just the way that the interview process works now, and you're going to have to toughen up to that. That's very disheartening. You're thinking, "Is the posting not correct? What's wrong with what I'm doing?" And the bottom line is people are looking for a job that they can connect with. Making sure that posting really describes not just the hours of the job, full-time job description, et cetera, but why you're there and what they're going to gain and grow from. Being in that position, I think is really key. Mike Whitmer: The conversation during an interview has changed. It used to be the employer, the hiring doctor, would go in and ask all the questions, but that's changed too. Dr. Mark Sanna: Well, sure. So they've already Googled you, they've checked your LinkedIn profile, they know what your website looks like. When the candidate comes in, and in particular, millennial Gen Z candidates, they're going to be asking you a lot of questions. And that kind of puts some folks who haven't been used to this new process a little bit off. And the idea is they're looking for a match just as much as you are. Gen Z and millennials really want a position that has some social consciousness to it, something that is giving back, that has a higher purpose. So if you're going to fill a clerical position, you have to connect the dots for the candidate between, how they are going to do their job, whether it's managing patient records or patient files or et cetera, and how in fact, that connects to the bigger place of making a difference in people's lives. And that's where, as chiropractors, we really shine, because we have that tremendous mission as our practices, to make a difference in people's lives. And so being able to verbalize that, make that part of the interview process, make that shine, I think is really important for folks who are going through that process right now. Mike Whitmer: Yeah, I think that chiropractors do have kind of a leg up in that they do have this terrific social purpose and place in healthcare. Communicating that is a challenge, I would imagine. Dr. Mark Sanna: Very true. Mike Whitmer: So once we find a good employee, how do we keep them? What do team members need to stay at their job? Dr. Mark Sanna: First of all, some flexibility. If in the past you've been very rigid, as many of us were. From two years ago till today, the whole landscape has changed. We are still in the tail end of this pandemic, and you're going to find maybe your paid time off policy, in which you gave folks a week or maybe two weeks after employment, PTL, the folks are burning through that really quickly. If you think you have to stick to that rigidly and not be flexible in terms of time off, I think that's really key and important to note. I think what's also really important is to know that a lot of your workforce are parents now, and being rigid in terms of only a full-time position, versus maybe thinking about, could this be two part-time employees who are sharing the duty of that role? And maybe even a step beyond that, thinking about what is actually totally necessary to be onsite in the practice, versus what could possibly be done offsite from home in terms of being able to have childcare and the balance? It's really interesting that 50% now of our chiropractic college students are female. This I think not only holds for the employee, but for the employer as well. Thinking about quality of life balance is super, super important. Mike Whitmer: What about benefits as the job market becomes more competitive? Do employers have pressure on benefits offered to employees? Dr. Mark Sanna: As chiropractors, we truly do. First of all, when we talk about the starting salary, a couple of years ago, starting salary in a chiropractic practice for a typical chiropractic assistant position might be 11, 12, $13. If you're going to lead with 11, 12, $13, you're going to hear crickets chirping on your Indeed posting. Folks are having to adjust the starting salary up three, four, $5 in some regions, simply to be competitive for that entry level position. I think the other challenge for us as small business folks is healthcare benefits. Being able to do something toward healthcare. Let's say you're a small chiropractic practice with a doc and a couple of CAs, it's a challenge to be able to pay for a full insurance premium for an employee that could cost seven, eight, nine, a thousand dollars a month. Having some sort of matching fund there, where maybe you pay 30, 40, 50% of their healthcare benefit, and as they gain in longevity in their position, maybe increasing that. There's an interesting component of the CARES, C-A-R-E-S, CARES Act, and that is a student loan repayment program that a lot of employers don't know about. I think it's $5,250 a year. You can pay an employee and they can receive that tax free, which, if you're talking about an associate or if you're talking about a high level employee, that's a 30% something tax bracket, and you're getting the benefit because it is an actual expense for your practice. But most importantly, that individual is decreasing their student loan, which now everybody has. Those sorts of creative ways of making the position attractive, lets your potential employee know that you care about them, you care about their future, but it also is a creative way to give you an edge up maybe over some of the other employers that are out there. Mike Whitmer: Great point. I've heard it said that people don't quit jobs, they quit their employers, they quit their manager, which really to me comes down to communication. I think many employers, chiropractors included, have always viewed communication as a top down process, which may not be effective in this environment. How has employee communication changed? Dr. Mark Sanna: That old authoritarian managerial process where, my way or the highway, here's how we do it, that's no longer going to be successful. By the way, it's just not a great way to run any business. I am a big believer in the motto that there is not one of us who's as smart as all of us together. And when you bring together a team, and you create that free flow of ideas from the bottom up, I like to tease that kind of a glass of champagne, where the bubbles kind of bubble from the bottom up to the top, you want that in your practice. You don't want folks being on tiptoes or walking on eggshells around the boss, that they can't call us out on what we could do better. Doing things because it's the way we've always done it, simply doesn't work. Being innovative and creative in today's environment is absolutely essential. So letting folks know that we not only honor what it is that they have to say and their opinions, but you can feel free to call me out if I'm not walking my talk as well. Let me know. It's important that we have that type of a relationship. Mike Whitmer: Dr. Sanna, thank you so much for helping us with this topic. You've given us some really good things to think about, and some good tips to navigate this challenging employment environment that we're all living through right now. Dr. Mark Sanna: Thank you for having me, Mike. I much appreciate you and the team at NCMIC. Mike Whitmer: Dr. Sanna gave us a lot to think about. We're putting the transcript of our conversation and links to some articles about hiring in the show notes. (14:13) Mike Whitmer: Does NCMIC have an informed consent form for doctors to use in practice? That's the topic of our question this time on Ask NCMIC, where we get quick answers to chiropractic issues. The short answer, doctors, is no. There are a few reasons why. First, the informed consent process is exactly that. It's a process. This is a communication process, a conversation. And while a form is always good to have in the record, the conversation is the most important thing. Second, rules vary from state to state. What may be required for a form in California may not be required in Ohio. And finally, NCMIC is extremely cautious of setting standards. If we were to publish a form for all our policy holders to use, it would be used against us when defending our doctors. If a doctor doesn't use NCMIC's prescribed language, it could be construed as a breach in the standard. Our top priority is to provide you with the best defense possible, and we don't want to do anything that may compromise our ability to do so. We do, however, have a sample form available on NCMIC.com. We'll put that link in the show notes. Please understand this is a sample only. We encourage doctors to take the sample, adapt it for their state of practice, and of course, as with any other form you employ in your practice, a review by local legal counsel is a good idea. Thanks for listening. If you like what you heard, consider giving us a rating on Apple Podcasts. It really does help more people find the podcast. Don't forget to check out the show notes too. It's estimated by the American Chiropractic Association chiropractors treat more than 35 million Americans (adults and children) annually. Meanwhile Georgetown University says approximately 16 million adults — 8 percent of all adults — experience persistent or chronic back pain, and as a result are limited in certain everyday activities. Back pain is the sixth most costly condition in the United States. For Dr. Michael DeCubellis "'I'm a published author of two books, The Truth Behind Movement and Why Didn't the Pain Go Away: The Science of How Injuries Become Permanent. My goal is to empower patients with knowledge that helps them make informed decisions about their treatment to return to living a full life. I am Hospital and Trauma Qualified. My innovative practice focuses on treating the problem not the symptom. Because of my experience, I can provide support and expertise to Injury Law professionals. I began focus on chronic pain after having several patients come into my clinic with issues of pain that had been present for years and never went away. I wasn't able to make much progress with these patients either, and I wanted to figure out why this was happening and what could be done. After extensive training and research, I was able to identify the underlying problem with the way of treating these patients, identify the underlying diagnosis and create a specialized treatment protocol to achieve results that were not possible before. Now those patients with injuries are able to heal properly the first time and recurrent and chronic problems actually improve! This was made to better help patients get results quickly and not have these structural issues keep coming back. Now I work to not only help those achieve better results, but help people understand what is going on with their bodies, how the healing really happens, and why issues become chronic." “I woke up this morning with an excruciating headache. I thought the top of my head was going to blow off!” “I notice as the day goes on, tightness in my neck worsens and I get a headache usually by 2-3pm.” “I don't know if I can do my work with my headaches.” Statements like these are common on case history forms patients fill out when they seek chiropractic care for their headaches. Many patients ask, “...what is a headache?” The National Institutes of Health (NIH) describe four types of headache: vascular, muscular contraction or tension, traction, and inflammatory. The most common form of vascular headache is the migraine. Migraine sufferers usually complain of severe pain on one or both sides of the head, nausea or vomiting, and sometimes visual changes. There is often a heightened sensitivity to light or noise prompting migraine sufferers to lay in a dark, quiet room until the migraine passes. Women are more likely to suffer from migraines than men and the severity of symptoms can be so extreme that all activity must be stopped until it passes. The next most common type of vascular headache is the toxic headache produced by a fever. Other vascular headache types include “cluster” headaches, which are characterized by repeated episodes of intense pain that start in one spot and spread out. These may only last a few minutes to an hour but carry a very high level of pain and activity intolerance. Another common type of vascular headache is that resulting from high blood pressure. Muscle contraction or tension headaches involve tightening of the facial and neck muscles. These often start in the neck and radiate over the top or to the sides of the head. The muscles in the neck are usually extremely tight and tender and often, moderate pressure applied with the finger or thumb to these muscles will prompt radiating pain into and/or over the top of the head. This can also result in significant activity intolerance but usually not as severe as migraine or cluster headaches. Traction and inflammatory headaches result because of other conditions that range from a sinus infection to a stroke. These types of headaches can serve as a warning sign of a more significant or serious condition. Another example is meningitis as well as other conditions affecting the sinuses, spine, neck, ear, and teeth. The NIH suggests, when headaches occur three or more times a month, that “… preventive treatment is usually recommended.” Certainly, in some cases, medication may be indicated but only after ruling out a more serious condition and after exhausting less invasive treatments that carry fewer side effects. The American Chiropractic Association recommends: Avoid long time periods of staying in one position (computer, sewing machine, reading, etc.) and take stretching/neck range of motion exercise breaks every ½ to 1 hour; Exercise – walking, low impact aerobics; Avoid teeth clenching (due to straining the temporomandibular – TMJ, or jaw joint); Drink lots of water – stay hydrated. Chiropractic care may include spinal manipulation (adjustments), nutritional advice (dietary suggestions, vitamin/mineral options such as a B complex), exercise, posture retraining, and relaxation techniques. Any and all health care concerns, decisions, and actions must be done through the advice and counsel of a health care professional who is familiar with your updated medical history.

These may be logical for a medical doctor that does not intervene with structural alignment, however, for the evidence based chiropractor who needs x-ray for better patient care with better outcomes, it is completely inappropriate. We discuss why.

Dr. Tony Smith, DC, is a chiropractor and founder of Dynamic Health, a holistic healthcare facility in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He became fascinated with alternative medicine while attending the University of Kansas after he was dramatically healed from a chronic disabling condition. He realized then that he wanted to pursue a career in natural healing. Immediately after graduating from KU, Dr. Smith enrolled at Cleveland Chiropractic College, where he received his Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1980. During his 38 years of practice, Dr. Smith passionately studied and practiced a wide range of progressive natural-healing methods. This enabled him to become successful at treating chronic, difficult health problems. His accumulated knowledge and wealth of clinical experience eventually inspired him to develop and teach several profound healing techniques. They include AllerTouch, CranioBiotic Technique (CBT) and, most importantly, LymeStop. LymeStop is the product of Dr. Smith’s research with hundreds of chronic Lyme disease patients. Thus far, this all-natural technique has helped more than 4,000 Lyme sufferers worldwide. Due to the tremendous amount of physician interest and patient need, Dr. Smith will be teaching LymeStop in the near future. Dr. Smith lives in Post Falls, Idaho, with his wife, Lisa. He has two adult daughters of whom he is very proud. Dr. Smith is a member of the American Chiropractic Association, the Idaho Association of Chiropractic Physicians, and the Christian Chiropractors Association. Dr. Todd Sinett, a NYC-based chiropractor with his own practice, is the author of 3 Weeks to a Better Back: Solutions for Healing the Structural, Nutritional and Emotional Causes of Back Pain (October 2015), as well as The Truth About Back Pain, his first title. He is also the founder and creator of The BackBridgeTM System, a complementary device that helps users maintain their overall health. Inspired to develop a new core philosophy to dealing with back pain, Dr. Sinett discovered that the root cause of back pain is not limited to structural issues, nor can it be simply resolved through treatment. He also found that a person's emotional health and nutrition are equally important to uncover and address the root causes of back pain. Using his three-pronged approach to evaluating and treating back pain, known as “The Sinett Solution,” Dr. Sinett assesses clients' pain points, range of movement, and body alignment before providing a treatment program based on three categories: structural (muscles and bones); nutritional (diet); and emotional (daily stress). If one of these elements is distressed, one's overall health suffers – often manifesting as pain in the back. With his recommended simple lifestyle adjustments that include exercise routines, diet plans, and meditative practices, his patients are able to stop back pain from limiting their ability to actually live life. In addition to his book, BackBridge, and practice, Dr. Sinett is a recognized authority for his expertise in applied kinesiology; has served as a clinical expert for many television programs, including “The View,” “FoxMD,” and “Good Day New York;” and has been a featured lecturer at MSNBC and The Learning Annex. A native of Merrick, Long Island, Dr. Sinett is an active member of the New York Chiropractic Association, the American Chiropractic Association, and the International College of Applied Kinesiology. He has also been named a Top Chiropractor in the Guide to America by the Consumers Research Council of America. Dr. Sinett received his undergraduate degree from American University and graduated with honors from the New York Chiropractic College. He received his certification in Meridian Therapy (acupressure) from the New York Chiropractic College and is a Certified Fitness Trainer.
Growing up, Todd Sinett witnessed how his chiropractor father made his patients feel better every day (sometimes miraculously). He decided at an early age that his life mission was also to help people live without back pain. Today, he is the author of “Three Weeks to a Better Back: Solutions for Healing the Structural, Nutritional and Emotional Causes of Back Pain” and is the creator of The Backbridge System, a complementary device to help people maintain their overall health. He treats patients at his midtown Manhattan clinic that he founded in 1995. At the core of his philosophy, Sinett has discovered that the root causes of back pain are not limited to treating one's actual back. He discovered that emotional health and nutrition are equally important areas to assess and address when finding the root causes of back pain. Sinett evaluates pain points, range of movement, and alignment of one

Minimally invasive surgery has similar results to traditional techniques with less blood loss, pain, muscle damage and a shorter recovery time.Back pain is very common amongst individuals. In fact, according to the American Chiropractic Association, 31 million Americans experience back pain at any given time.Your spine is composed of 26 bones, multiple ligaments, muscles and discs that could be compromised when you've injured your back. More than likely you will need to go see a doctor in order to find the best treatment option for you.Have you heard of minimally invasive surgery?Even though back pain is widely common, that doesn't mean the answer is always surgery. However, if you're someone who has a ruptured disc, surgery is your best option. For instance, for a discectomy (the surgical removal of a herniated disc), the incision would be a one-inch incision that allows surgeons to go in-between your muscles and take out a minimal amount of bone to remove the ruptured disc.Minimally invasive spinal surgery is when surgeons make a smaller incision but still big enough to get the job done. This prevents the complications of making large incisions with more exposure to unnecessary areas of your body.Is there a faster recovery with minimally invasive surgery? The recovery time is different for each person. Typically, recovery will be six weeks but can change depending on how healthy you are.Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery and surgeon at Beaumont Health System, Jeffrey Fischgrund, MD, discusses if you're someone who would qualify for spinal surgery, how to prevent back pain and the techniques emerging with invasive spinal surgery.
