Text a Message to the ShowThis is the second part of our story of Detective Dana Gouge, who handcuffed the BTK serial killer, Dennis Rader. If you haven't heard part one which told the story of a narcissistic serial killer who couldn't stop talking… then what are you doing?! Go back and listen to Ep 110 right now! We left off with Detective Gouge putting the handcuffs on Dennis Rader before the task force took him to be interviewed. Dana is going to tell us a bit about those interviews but what I find interesting, and what I think is missing from your typical true crime podcast, is what effect it had on the detectives to encounter a truly evil man, to be the team working such a large case, and then to wrap it up. So I'm going to explore these topics with Dana and talk about how that affects him twenty years later. But first let me tell you what I did not reveal in part 1: the reason I know Dana Gouge. Dana isn't just a retired homicide detective, today he's also a chaplain. In fact at the time of this recording he's in the process of becoming a police chaplain at the same agency where I serve. I'm really excited about the prospect of serving alongside him and his background in both policing and now counseling, pastoral care, ministry, and theology make him an excellent person to discuss the topic what to do when you encounter true evil. With Halloween only 21 days away, folk horror blogger Rowan Lee joins us to discuss a pair of offbeat Brit horror movies with totally loaded casts. First, Peter Cushing discovers that the humanoid fossil he discovered in New Guinea transforms into the slimy embodiment of pure evil when you just add water in THE CREEPING FLESH (1973). In a film with f--d-up family dynamics, Cushing almost immediately injects cells from his creepy skeleton's newly formed flesh into his young daughter (Lorna Heilbron) in a hair-brained attempt to inoculate her against evil. Christopher Lee is Cushing's hyper-competitive half-brother who mismanages a mental hospital and decides that stealing the fossil during a rainstorm is a great idea. What could go wrong? Directed by Hammer veteran Freddie Francis (DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE), who went on to late-career success as the director of photography of three David Lynch movies (ELEPHANT MAN, DUNE, THE STRAIGHT STORY) and Scorsese's remake of CAPE FEAR. Next, Christopher Lee teams up with the great Boris Karloff and 60s scream queen Barbara Steele in THE CRIMSON CULT aka CURSE OF THE CRIMSON ALTAR (1968). This one starts off with a bang with psychedelic sex parties and pagan sacrifices, so as Greg suggests, get high quick because the movie soon gives way too much screen time to Mark Eden as a dense antiques dealer looking for his brother where everyone is losing their minds (and articles of clothing) over anniversary of the burning of the witch Lavinia (Steele). I mean, um, Christopher Lee is right there! Also starring Michael Gough who played Alfred in the Tim Burton BATMAN movies. Both of our films today are from Tigon British Film Releasing Productions, the studio that released two folk horror classics: THE WITCHFINDER GENERAL (1968) and THE BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW (1971) along with some sex comedies. We also discuss folk horror and the pandemic with Rowan Lee and Bob saw MEGALOPOLIS! The first episode of The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live aired on AMC this past Sunday, and it did NOT disappoint. TWD is back in full force with the highly anticipated (and long-awaited) return of Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes to the world of The Walking Dead. At it's core, this first episode (which felt more like a feature film rather than a TV pilot) is a story of grit, determination, and brokenness; a longing for what you cannot have. This is a tale of mental health and emotional intensity that happens to take place within the horrors of the zombie apocalypse. The CRM is bigger and more immense that we ever could have imagined, and it looks like after the remaining five episodes of this series, The Walking Dead Universe will never be the same again. Mike Flanagan's Doctor Sleep (2019) is widely considered to be one of the greatest horror sequels of all time. It pulled off a pretty incredible feat, considering that its a direct sequel to arguably the most influential horror film of all time - Stanley Kubrick's The Shining (1980), starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall. Quite frankly, this movie has no business being as good as it is, but its truly one of the best sequels to any film in any genre from the last 50 years. Let's watch it! . . Saviors may be my new favorite Green Day record, and I'm not afraid to say it. That's right. As a lifelong fan of Green Day and their music, this new album hits in all the right ways. It's a major return to form in concept, while simultaneously daring to push the boundaries of the traditional punk rock sound. It tackles politics, the nuances (and simplicities) of love, mental health, the legacy of rock and roll, and the continuously changing times that are only getting stranger. Green Day rules the punk rock scene, and Saviors proves that even 30 years after the release of their breakout album, Dookie (1994), AND 20 years after their rock-opera masterpiece, American Idiot (2004) changed the music world, they've still got it. Strange days are indeed here to stay. And so is Green Day. Here's my full track-by-track review! Check it out on YouTube! https://youtu.be/X3AMew1EVM8 **All music and tracks belong to Warner Records and Green Day. If you're a horror fan, odds are you've heard the news. Melissa Barrera has been unfairly fired by Paramount Pictures and the Spyglass Media Group after posting her thoughts on the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. In addition, Jenna Ortega has voluntarily removed herself from the project, slated for a 2024 release. As of now, it is unclear whether or not Ortega's exit was in response to Barrera's firing or if scheduling conflicts were a contributing factor as well. On the 118th episode of Let's Talk Movies, we're giving our thoughts on the Scream story, as well as reviewing the biggest horror surprise of the year - Eli Roth's Thanksgiving (2023)!! We had an absolute blast with this one. It made for one of the best theater experiences that we've had in a long time. In October of 1978, John Carpenter's Halloween terrorized audiences around the globe, quickly making it the highest-grossing independent movie of all time. In 1981, its direct sequel, Halloween II, was released in an attempt to build upon the success of the original film. The idea was to give the story of Michael Myers and Laurie Strode a meaningful conclusion. The franchise's success spawned even more installments, with Universal Pictures and Blumhouse announcing a brand new direct sequel to the 1978 film in 2017. Jamie Lee Curtis would once again return to play Laurie Strode, with seasoned Halloween alum returning to the franchise as well. Which was the better direct sequel to the 1978 original? We're joined by JayTee of #HeyJay to discuss which film acted as the better continuation for The Shape's story. The United States has a long history of first generation immigrants filling the roles of first responders, both police and fire. As long as there has been police and fire stations, there have been uniformed personnel with a bit of a foreign accent. So I wanted to bring you a modern example of someone who was born in a foreign country and immigrated here, overcoming language and cultural barriers . Today we're talking to Violeta Magee who immigrated with her family from the former Yugoslavia. Officers are asked to go investigate all kinds of things that go bump in the night. Spooky houses, hospitals, funeral homes, churches, and cemeteries are all have to be checked out. But at the department that I serve, there are multiple people who believe our headquarters is haunted. It's a old building where you feel the history, with lots of long dark hallways and questionable lighting. I'll be joking around about ghost stories and the smiles will drop from the faces of professional men and women, who suddenly get very serious and say, "No, I've seen things in that building."I asked for a volunteer to give me an example and multiple people nominated Shawn Magee. He's a former SWAT sergeant turned captain in the Investigative Bureau, who now works overnights in one of the spookiest buildings in our city.Music is by Chris Haugen, by Brian Bolger, and by TrackTribeHey Chaplain Podcast Episode 069Tags:Halloween, Career, Detectives, Ghosts, Haunted House, Humor, Paranormal, Police, Police Station, Spooky, Kansas City, KansasSupport the showThanks for Listening! Marriage in law enforcement seems like a doomed subject sometimes. It's difficult so people talk about it as if it's impossible. But I know several long time married, wise and successful couples where one or both have been cops and they prove that it absolutely is possible to survive an LEO career and keep your marriage. So today we're talking to Erica Davis. Erica married a cop… and lived to tell the tale! If fact, I found her teaching classes at a conference about how to provide meaningful help to LEO wives and that inspired me to get an interview with her.Music is by Chris Haugen, by Brian Bolger, and by FSM TeamHey Chaplain Podcast Episode 068Tags:Marriage, Communication, Culture, Dispatchers, Family, Law Enforcement, Police, Priorities, Purposefulness, Relationships, Schedules, Stress, Support, Understanding, Colorado, Kansas Support the showThanks for Listening! Countess Elizabeth Báthory was a monster - a sadistic, murderous, vampire-witch who, in her castle in Hungary in the early 1600s, tortured and murdered over 600 young girls, then bathed in the blood of her victims. Or did she? Was she truly the supreme supernatural evil of 500 years of legend? Or was she an innocent victim of witch-hunt hysteria and political scheming? Or was she something else entirely? Dig into the mysteries of this gruesome, complicated tale with our guest, legal historian Kimberly Craft, in our 2023 Halloween Special. Music featured in this episode was provided by Kevin Macleod, Doug Maxwell, Esther Abrami, Aaron Kenny, Brian Bolger, Jimena Contreras, Quincas Moreira, Twin Musicom, Myuu and John Patitucci. Well, here we are. As of this afternoon, the Scream 6 killer(s) reveal has been leaked online. And not only that, but the Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania mid AND post-credits scenes have both leaked as well. Unfortunately, these events have only been the most recent in a constant stream of leaks and spoilers to flood the internet. Henry Cavill's cameo in Black Adam hit the web days before the movie even released. Images of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield IN their Spider-Man costumes leaked WAY before Spider-Man: No Way Home was in theaters. These individual leaks are a small piece of a much bigger issue within the moviegoing world. Let's chat about it.

December 20th, 2022 marks two years and 100 episodes of Let's Talk Movies - something that seemed nearly impossible at one point in time. We owe a massive thank you to everyone that has supported and joined us on this incredible journey. We're both so incredibly thankful for each and every person that has shown us love and support over the last two years. To celebrate our anniversary, we're ranking every film in Marvel Studios' Infinity Saga, chatting about this amazing journey thus far, and answering your questions live on the show. This will be one for the books. For us, it's never been about clicks, but next, we make the climb for 1,000 subscribers. 44 years of Michael Myers. 44 years of Laurie Strode. 44 years of Doctor Samuel Loomis. 44 years of this incredible battle between good and evil in the franchise that defined the slasher-horror genre, beginning with John Carpenter's Halloween in 1978. With the conclusion of the Blumhouse Trilogy in Halloween 2018, Halloween Kills, and Halloween Ends, there's no better time to stack all of The Shape's murderous Halloween adventures than right now. In the 21st episode of Purely and Simply Evil - a Let's Talk Movies podcast, we're revisiting one of the most controversial entries within the Halloween franchise - Rob Zombie's Halloween 2 (2009). Is this an imaginative stroke of pure genius, or the heavy metal mess that many horror fans believe it to be? Either way, you've got to admit...H2 is one hell of a ride. We did in fact talk both of Rob Zombie's Halloween remakes in an earlier stage in our channel's history, but felt that a proper, updated deep-dive was necessary. We'll briefly talk about the film, it's conception, and it's creation, before beginning a full watch-along shortly after. Hobo Michael Myers is here. Let's do this.
