Me confieso un fan de la saga de Bond, James Bond. Entre otras cosas por el protagonismo que suelen tener los coches en estas películas. Y es que el creador del personaje, Ian Fleming, era un fanático del automóvil. Vamos a repasar todos los coches que ha conducido nuestro agente secreto favorito… te vas a sorprender: Ha conducido desde un Citroën 2CV… hasta medio R11. Y algunos, completamente olvidados… Ya explicaremos lo del “medio”… Por lo general se asume que James Bond, muy “brittish” él, lleva un Aston Martin y generalmente un DB5. Este es un error común, pues evidentemente no es el único coche de James Bond, ni siquiera se ha usado en la mayoría de las 25 películas producidas hasta la fecha ni, desde luego, ha sido el primero. Ese honor, el de ser el primero, le corresponde al Blower Bentley 4.5 litros de 1930. Y muchos diréis que no habéis visto ese coche en ninguna películas… así es. Pero es el coche que usa James Bond en su primera novela, Casino Royale, aparecida en 1953. Y para el que piense que el DB5 es el primer coche usado por James Bond en una película… ¡Pues también se equivoca! Ese honor le corresponde a otro coche muy británico, pese a que su nombre suene francés, el Sumbeam Alpine de 1962. Vamos a repasar todos o casi todos los coches que condujo James Bond, ya sea porque era su coche, porque era el coche de su “empresa”, el MI16 o porque los alquilaba cuando llegaba a alguno de los escenarios idílicos propios de la serie. Citaremos la película en la que aparece, con el título usado en España, un año de referencia, a veces del coche a veces del estreno de la película. 1. Chevrolet Bel Air Convertible (1957). Aparece en la primera película de la saga “Agente 007 contra el Dr. No” 2. Sunbeam Alpine (1962). En esa misma película el coche que “chupa” más pantalla es alquilado y es el citado Sunbeam Alpine de 1952, un deportivo relativamente modesto de 1,6 litros y 80 CV. 3. Bentley 3 ½ Litre (1935). Llegamos a la segunda película de la saga “Desde Rusia con amor” en la que el MI16 cede al agente 007 un coche con estilo y clase, pero algo “entrado en años”. 4. Aston Martin DB5 (1963). Y, ¡Por fin! en la tercera película de la saga, “James Bond contra Goldfinger” aparece el DB5. Este coche repite en varias películas, en ocasiones “compartiendo cartel” con modelos más modernos: Es el caso, entre otras, de “Operación Trueno”, “Goldeneye”, “El mañana nunca muere”, “Casino Royal” y otras. 5. Aston Martin DBS (1969). Un gran olvidado y un coche para mi precioso. Aparece en el film “El servicio secreto de su majestad”. 6. “Moon Buggy” (1971). Es que James Bond llegó hasta la luna en “Diamantes para la eternidad” película en la que Sean Connery huye de los malos a los mandos de este buggy lunar. 7. AMC Hornet (1971). En “El hombre de la pistola de oro” suben al Roger Moore en nada menos que en AMC Hornet… 8. AMC Matador Coupé “volador” (1974). Porque en 1974, en la misma película crearon un AMC “volador” que volaba de verdad… solo a baja altura. Un peligro. 9. Lotus Esprit (1977). Bond le es infiel a Aston Martin y utiliza un coche muy británico, diseñado por Giugiaro y muy especial: El Lotus Esprit. Primero en “La espía que me amo” y luego en versión Turbo en “Solo para tus ojos”. Es muy famosa la versión “submarina” de la primera película… apodada “Wet Nelie”. 10. Citroën 2 CV (1981). Para mí una de las mejores persecuciones del cine y de la saga 007 la puedes ver en “Solo para tus ojos”. 11. Bajaj RE (1983). He incluido este triciclo como una “Licencia periodística” pues no es en esencia un coche… pero ¡que espectáculo” Esta persecución de la película “Octopussy” por el mercado indio de Udaipur os aseguro que vale la pena… y como siempre, Roger Moore ni se despeina… 12. Renault 11 (1985). Aparece en la película “Panorama para matar”. Otra persecución espectacular, sobre todo cuando el coche se parte por la mitad y mi James Bond favorito, Roger Moore, sigue con medio R11 como si tal cosa. 12+1. Aston Martin V8 Vantage (1977). Timothy Dalton se estrena en “007 Alta tensión” de 1987… para mi es probablemente el peor, o el menos bueno, James Bond de todos. No así su coche, un espectacular V8 Vantage. 14. BMW Z3 (1995). En 1995 y con Pierce Brosnan el MI16 “se echa al monte” y deja de utilizar coches británicos para pasarse a BMW. Para mí un Z3, con todos mis respetos, no le pega nada a James Bond. 15. BMW 750i (1997). Aunque menos le pega el Serie 7 E38 de “El mañana nunca muere”. Brosnan no tuvo buena suerte con sus coches… como veremos… 16. BMW Z8 (2000). En la penúltima película de Brosnan, por fin, le dan un coche “decente” … aunque no sea inglés: Nos referimos al BMW Z8, rabiosa novedad en ese momento. Potente, precioso pero que no nos hacía olvidar a los Aston Martin. 17. Aston Martin Vanquish (2001). En “Muere otro día” vuelta, con acierto, a Aston Martin. 18. Aston Martin DB9 (2004). En el film “Spectre” aparece uno de mis coches favoritos. 19. Aston Martin DB10 (2014). Como este DB10 un coche creado por y para la película “Spectre” y en cuyo diseño participó el propio director de la película, Sam Mendes. 20. Aston Martin Valhalla (2019). Este modelo, presentado como prototipo en 2019, fue el protagonista junto con Craig de la película “Sin tiempo para morir” de 2021, de momento la última de la saga… Me he divertido con este guion… creo que Rodrigo no tanto buscando imágenes de estos 20 coches.

Larry Collins swings by the shop to show Stacey his '65 Aston Martin DB5. Then it's off to the mail bag to answer some listener questions about rust preventive paints, helping your daughter pick out her first car, and what to do with the dreaded Ford 6.8L V-10 engine.

Sin duda es un icono del coche de lujo británico. Pero sin rodeos: Aston Martin está viva de milagro. Ha estado muchas veces en quiebra. Primero la salvaron un Conde y una Lady británica. Más tarde fue vendida por 100 libras a un consorcio bancario, luego a un empresario del petróleo, después a un armador griego y por fin cayó en manos de Ford, que fiel a su costumbre, casi acaba con ella. Finalmente, un consorcio de inversores, entre ellos Toto Wolf, Sabastian Vettel, el rico farmacéutico suizo Ernesto Bertarelli y, como no, Lawrence Stroll… Lionel Martin y Robert Bamford, fundadores de la compañía Bamford & Martin, construyeron un coche especial para la "Aston Hill", una popular carrera británica. No dejaba de ser un “invento” con chasis Isotta Fraschini de 1908 y un motor Coventry Climax. Pero el coche gustó tanto que decidieron fabricar algunas unidades para la venta. Pero llega la Primera Guerra Mundial y tras ella, la primera quiebra. Pero llega la “primera” quiebra de muchas… y Bamford decide abandonar el barco. ¡Hace falta dinero! Y aparece nada menos que un Conde, el Conde Louis Zborowski, gran aficionado a las carreras, no mal piloto, pero sin dinero suficiente. Y es entonces cuando aparece otra entusiasta y millonaria británica, Lady Dorothea Charnwood, que la compra, la salva y pone al frente a su hijo, John Benson. Parecía que los problema financieros se habían acabado… pero no. En 1925 las penurias seguían y Lionel Martin, uno de los fundadores, vende su parte a Augustus Bertelli acaudalado piloto e ingeniero, que se puso al frente de la empresa. Es en estos tiempos cuando, recordando los triunfos en la Aston Hill, deciden llamar a la empresa Aston Martin. Pero los problemas financieros continuaban. Aparecen Lance Pridroux-Brune que aportó dinero para después vender la empresa a Sir Arthur Sutherland, quien decidió, seguramente con acierto, abandonar las carreras para dedicarse a la construcción de deportivos de calle. Pero si la Primera Guerra Mundial estuvo a punto de acabar con la marca, pues con la Segunda pasó lo mismo… hacía falta un milagro… y el milagro llegó. Muchos modelos de la marca llevan aún la denominación DB en honor a David Brown, apasionado de los coches de calidad y propietario de una empresa fabricante de engranajes y máquinas herramientas. Pero… las deudas se acumulan. Y David Brown vende la empresa al consorcio bancario Company Developments por 101 libras esterlinas… pero Aston Martin, por enésima vez, entra en suspensión de pagos. Aston Martin la compra un consorcio “americano canadiense” con Alan Curtis al frente, que la revenden a un empresario petrolífero, Victor Gauntlett que al llegar la crisis del petróleo la vende a un armador griego, el rival de Onassis, Peter Livanos… Pero hubo un momento que Ford quiso convertirse en un referente de las marcas Premium a base de comprar y comprar. Compraron Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo y Aston Martin. En 2020 el “Muchimillonario” Lawrence Stroll se va de compras, adquiere un equipo de F1 y una marca de coches… Aston Martin. Se emitieron pagares, se llegó a un acuerdo tecnológico con Mercedes, pero faltaba estabilidad en la gestión y en las finanzas… y aparece el “otro” salvador de la marca… yo haría modelos de Aston Martin con las siglas DB y con las siglas LS. Crea en 2020 un heterogéneo grupo de inversores que se hacen propietarios de la marca, entre ellos muchos implicados en la F1 como Toto Wolf y Sabastian Vettel; otros millonarios como el suizo magnate del mundo de la farmacia Ernesto Bertarellí; empresas del mundo de la automoción, como Mercedes y el grupo chino Geely; o el gobierno de Arabia Saudita. Pero con Lawrence Stroll a la cabeza. Aston Martin ha anunciado un aluvión de novedades para 2023, por supuesto entre ella SUV, coche híbridos y eléctricos, como no podía ser de otra manera. Y con tecnología Mercedes, un socio que aporta algo de lo que la firma británica tiene un verdadero déficit. ¿Tiene futuro Aston Martin? Visto lo visto, es una marca superviviente y, pese a todo, con una magnífica imagen. Y con futuro en la F1. Así que yo creo que sí. Coche del día. Hay coches que, en mi opinión, son absurdos. Otros no, otros son, directamente, estúpidos, sin sentido… Aunque puedan tener su encanto. Os hemos buscado una selección que, os anticipo, bastante variada. Y, como siempre, nos mojamos y diremos si solo con absurdos o, directamente, una estupidez. Limusinas: Más es peor. Vamos a distinguir entre las genuinas limusinas, berlinas de lujo que partían de una berlina normal y se alargaba la distancia entre ejes para proporcionar sobre todo más confort a los ocupantes que viajan detrás, aunque también se podía aumentar el número de posibles ocupantes. Muchas marcas han ofrecido versiones alargadas de sus berlinas más representativas, desde por ejemplo Citroën CX que ofrecía una versión “Prestige” con un acabado de lujo y batalla alargada 25 cm. Lo mismo hacían y hacen otras marcas, como Mercedes Clase S y las americanas Lincoln y Cadillac ofrecían modelos muy lujosos. Estas son las limusinas digamos, “razonables”. Pero luego, primero en los USA y luego en todo el Mundo se comenzaron a popularizar esas limusinas larguísimas, de más de 10 metros y con las ruedas en los extremos. SUV Coupé. ¿En qué quedamos? Siempre digo que los SUV son para mí coches absurdos con los inconvenientes de los TT de peso, tamaño y mala aerodinámica (por superficie frontal), pero sin sus ventajas. Pero ¿SUV-Coupé? Para mí el ejemplo más representativo ha sido uno de los primeros, el BMW X6 que tiene el mérito de reunir muchas de las desventajas de TT y algunas de las desventajas de un Coupé, como es la escasa habitabilidad trasera en altura… pero hay gente a la que estas cosas les gustan, con tal de llamar la atención… Monovolumen… ¿De tres volúmenes? Recuerdo la presentación del Seat Toledo III (2004-2009) en la que, en la comida, un “iluminado” me dijo: “Hemos inventado el monovolumen de tres volúmenes”… Pues, ¡enhorabuena! Os lo podíais haber ahorrado. Para mí es un ejemplo de cómo partiendo de un coche bonito, como el Altea y con un buen diseñador, como Walter de Silva, se puede hacer un verdadero monstruo. Monovolumen Coupé, ¡venga ya! Otro fracaso más. A ver, en qué quedamos, o monovolumen o coupé. Renault a la que en general aplaudo su valentía a la hora de hacer nuevas propuestas, se equivocó con el Avantime. El coche apareció en 2002 y desapareció en 2003. Y ¡ojo! que no fue como el caso de Seat, que añadieron, con perdón, un “culo” al Altea, aquí se lo curraron e inventaron unas puertas denominadas de “doble cinemática” que eran un prodigio… Descapotable… y Diésel. Ya sabéis que soy un defensor de los Diésel por más que algunos políticos desinformados hayan creado una leyenda negra… Pero, todo tiene un límite. Un TT, mejor diésel. Una SUV grande o un monovolumen, mejor diésel. Una berlina para viajar, mejor diésel. Coches ciudadanos, mejor híbrido o eléctricos, pero diésel, ¿por qué no? Coupés…pues para mí, un coupé diésel, como que no, pero hay motores diésel tan buenos que dan la talla. Pero ¿un descapotable Diesel? ¡Va de retro Satana! Os lo digo en castellano, porque seguro qua alguno que otro no sabe latín: ¡Aléjate de mí Satanás! Porsche y popular… ¿en la misma frase? Zapatero a tus zapatos… Si haces coupés estupendos y además te metes a hacer berlinas, SUV, coches diésel, híbridos, eléctricos… En 1994 Porsche diseñó un coche popular para el mercado chino. Shooting break, informal pero elegante. O sea, con chándal, pero con tacones. Las ideas más locas pueden funcionar si le pones un nombre chulo. Si dices de un coche que es un “coupé de caza” muchos te dirán si eres tonto, que nadie va a cazar con un coupé… bueno, si eres inglés, a lo mejor sí. Pero si dices “shooting break”… ¡ahí amigo! ¡eso es otra cosa! Aston Martin hizo unos pocos DB5 con esta configuración. Y en 1972 Volvo ofreció su exitoso Coupé 1800 S en versión Shooting Break, con portón posterior. Sólo se fabricaron unos 8.000, pero pasado el tiempo fue la inspiración del Volvo 480 Coupé y pasado más tiempo muchos coches han usado esa denominación. Coches de 3 ruedas. No me gustan los coches con motores de 3 cilindros… pero los coches de 3 ruedas, me gustan menos. Reliant ofrecía coches de tres ruedas, con una solo delante… justo donde iba el motor… ya es ganas de liarla. Primero fue el Reliant Regal de 1953, con chasis de madera… no le faltaba detalle. Y luego el Robin 20 años después. Motor trasero tracción delantera. Cerramos con un clásico de este canal. Uno de vosotros me preguntó si a alguien se le había ocurrido hacer un coche con motor por detrás del eje trasero y tracción delantera. Y antes de decir que a nadie en su sano juicio se le ocurriría semejante chorrada, me informé… y me encontré con el Dymaxion.

Despite admitting recently that the Tesla Model 3 alone is responsible for half of Toyota’s customer defections in North America — as Prius drivers transition to all-electric — the company has been an outspoken laggard in the race to electrification." According to the deSmog website: "Last week, at the Geneva Auto Show, a Toyota executive provided a curious explanation for the company’s refusal to launch a single battery electric vehicle. Don Rose is an Automotive Specialist for RM Auctions/Sotheby's operating out of the Boston area. He joined RM in 2006 after years of trading classic and sports cars as a noted importer of European Classics while living in London. He specialized in sports and GT cars and is participating in the relatively new area of Japanese collector cars. An avid participant of road rally events and hill climbs Don has also raced his ex-Peter Lovely Lotus Eleven. He is a collector and loves all things Bond, James Bond and was the lead when the DB5 007 Goldfinger film car sold in 2010. Goldfinger - “Scooby-Doo Style” Summary: Welcome to SPECTRE etc. This is the James Bond podcast where we discuss the ins and the outs of each film. This week we continue the fun we had watching “From Russia with Love” by joining James for a roll in Auric’s hayshed in the third 007 outing: “Goldfinger”. We follow Bond’s journey from the Fountainebleau in Miami - where he sends Dink on her way with an Oscar-winning slap - back to London for his meeting with Goldfinger at the golf course. And then we are off to Europe, where Bond shreds up Tilly’s undercarriage before doubling his contribution to the Masterson family’s grief. Next, we see Bond’s undercarriage get a little close to being shredded by Goldfinger’s laser, before we fly to the US (justifying MI6 spending all that time and money on the American parking meters) to meet Pussy Galore. The actors who play Auric’s gangster buddies give us all a lesson in subtlety and nuance, and then we break into Fort Knox to irradiate some gold. Along the way, we wonder why MI6 can’t afford to make ALL windows on the DB5 bulletproof, we list Bond’s many electrical one-liners he could (should?) have used, we compare this film to both Scooby Doo and The Simpsons, and we spend far longer than you’d think possible on seagull snorkels. Official SPECTRE etc Theory (OffSeT) #3: To determine who is responsible for an explosion, simply look for the man wearing a tuxedo, the one not joining the screaming masses leaving the building. We note that this is the second time Bond sets off a bomb in a public place, and then just calmy swans about in his tuxedo, ignoring the crowd of people rushing from the site of the explosion.
