Since Donald Trump's attempt to overturn the election in 2020, laws have been passed to protect our election results. But there has also been a concerted “election integrity” movement that has put election officials distrustful of the system in charge of local and county offices. And in California, only a third of congressional Republican incumbents have pledged to certify the results in November. We discuss how resilient our election system is, and whether we are now better protected from, or more vulnerable to, attacks on our democracy. Guests: Jim Rutenberg, reporter, The New York Times and The New York Times Magazine Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent, Vox - His books include "Injustices: The Supreme Court's History of Comforting the Comfortable and Afflicting the Afflicted" and "The Agenda: How a Republican Supreme Court is Reshaping America." Pastor JD explains one of the most perplexing paradoxes that we ever experience in our Christian lives, namely, that of how God will often times deem it necessary to bring about the afflicting in order that He might bring about the healing.

The amount of U.S. spending on healthcare reached four and a half trillion dollars in 2022, or about $14,000 per person. Despite such massive spending, many aspects of American healthcare are marred by problems. There's the shortage of primary care doctors. An emphasis on treating disease rather than promoting long-term health. Locally, doctors can make more in neighboring Massachusetts and Connecticut than they can in Rhode Island. And the state's hospitals are overly dependent on Medicare and Medicaid, rather than the more lucrative reimbursement paid by private insurers. This adds up to a series of complicated challenges, if not a worsening crisis. State government has started making some efforts to respond, but these remain at an early stage. So what will it take to put healthcare in Rhode Island on a better footing? Does the state have too many hospitals? And is it possible to create a system more responsive to everyday people than insurance companies and healthcare executives? This week on Political Roundtable, I'm going in-depth with author, community activist and former state Health Director Dr. Michael Fine.
A high risk of famine persists across the Gaza Strip with 96 percent of people there facing high levels of acute food insecurity. In Sudan, there is growing evidence that the civil war, now in its second year, is creating the world's largest hunger crisis with an estimated 24 million children left especially vulnerable. Afflicting your body and fasting is not the norm, so don't seek out crooked ways. Instead, follow the path that has been tread by many. Generally speaking, follow the Tanya, especially chapter 27, to avoid becoming despondent. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/igroskodesh/011/009/3529

Refrain from indulging in food and drink, or speaking frivolously. Abstain from speaking loshon hora or harming others. Fulfill the mitzvah of loving your fellow, even if you imagine they have harmed you or tarnished your honor. These tasks may be more challenging than simply not eating, but they do not affect your health. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/igroskodesh/012/007/4196
In the span of a singularly beautiful chapter, John 8, we see Jesus coming to terms with the broken--a woman caught in adultery, facing a death sentence--and the self-righteous. In a case with potentially monumental legal and political implications, the U.S. Supreme Court will soon decide if former President Donald Trump is ineligible to appear on the 2024 ballot. Late last year, the Colorado Supreme Court issued an opinion removing him from the state's primary ballot for his effort to overturn the 2020 election and his incitement of the January 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol. Shortly after, Maine's Secretary of State followed suit. The Supreme Court will hear arguments on February 8, just days before Colorado is set to mail ballots to voters. We'll talk about the issues before the Court and we'll hear from you: should the former president be excluded from the ballot for inciting an insurrection? Guests: Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent, Vox; author, "Injustices: The Supreme Court's History of Comforting the Comfortable and Afflicting the Afflicted" and "The Agenda: How a Republican Supreme Court is Reshaping America." Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin's bizarre, no-notice absence- without-leave turns out to have been a result of his treatment for cancer. Revelations that he was off the job for the better part of a week and no one noticed, though, are but the latest evidence of Team Biden's dangerously metastasizing dysfunctionality Enemies like Iran, Russia and especially Communist China are increasingly emboldened by the Biden administration's unwillingness to challenge, let alone meaningfully punish, their aggression. Friends like Israel, Ukraine and Taiwan are increasingly on their own, if not actually being undermined by feckless U.S. diplomacy and declining military power. In the absence, literally and figuratively, of effective Pentagon leadership, we're left with a weak National Security Council and even more hapless State Department mismanaging our national security policy. We need tested, robust and competent warriors in charge, now. This is Frank Gaffney.

Contemporary efforts to undermine democracy, spread disinformation and subvert elections are not without precedent in American politics, according to Rachel Maddow, the longtime MSNBC host, author and podcast creator. Rather, they've got a “prequel,” a period of American history before and during World War II when an “ultra-right authoritarian movement, weirdly infatuated with foreign dictatorships” planned to attack government targets to sow chaos and ultimately overthrow President Franklin D. Roosevelt. We'll talk to Maddow about what we can learn from the Americans who beat back the domestic authoritarians of the 1930s and 1940s. Her new book is “Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism.” The U.S. Supreme Court's latest term is underway with another round of big cases to watch. The future of an entire federal agency – the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau – is expected to be decided, along with cases about whether someone under a domestic violence restraining order can possess a gun, and the legality of the abortion medication mifepristone. We'll look at the Court's docket and what's at stake with Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent at Vox who covers the Supreme Court. Guests: Rachel Maddow, author, "Prequel: An American Fight Against Fascism"; host, "The Rachel Maddow Show" on MSNBC. Maddow's other books include “DRIFT: The Unmooring of American Military Power” and “Blowout: Corrupted Democracy, Rogue State Russia, and the Richest, Most Destructive Industry on Earth” Ian Millhiser, senior correspondent, Vox - His books include "Injustices: The Supreme Court's History of Comforting the Comfortable and Afflicting the Afflicted" and "The Agenda: How a Republican Supreme Court is Reshaping America."

Dawn met guest, Mary Whiteside, while they were both backlot tour guides at Universal Studios, Hollywood. When Mary suggested the HILF subject of the Supreme Court, Dawn was a bit stymied. The legal system can feel a little dark, a little depressing, and just too damn hard to understand sometimes - with the dates and the names and the precedents and -- what's an amicus? Which is why Dawn immediately said yes, because Mary is not just a guest with a HILFY curiosity, she's a real lawyer, and a mom, and funny and cool and ready to go down on Justice...00:02:13 - Dawn introduces Mary with a question of how a lawyer found herself being a movie studio tour guide to begin with. Mary explains that she was always interested in being a performer but that being a lawyer gave her (and her mom) the security she was looking for. ...And performing for the jury is like a little play. 00:08:22 - Along with the subject, Mary assigned Dawn the book INJUSTICES by Ian Millhiser. 'The Supreme Court's History of Comforting the Comfortable and Afflicting the Afflicted.' It is a dark path through some dark history which, as Mary says, gives you lots stuff to get pissed off about it.00:12:40 - Dawn begins with a quick overview of your middle school social studies, and the origin of the Supreme Court in the constitution. As one of the three branches of government, the purpose is to create reasonable checks and balances on the Executive and the Legislative... That's it's purpose, but certainly not always it's function. 00:19:14 - Mary gives the HILF on the individual that she thinks is the 'best' justice to have ever served on the Supreme Court, Sonia Sotomayor. 00:29:17 - Dawn and Mary discuss the history of the changing number of justices on the Supreme Court from 5 in the very beginning, to as many as 10 after the Civil War. FDR briefly discussed raising the number to 15 but was quickly shot down politically for even suggesting it. Today, the subject has come up again and is no less controversial. BREAK00:37:18 - Dawn and Mary resume with a conversation about what it's like to be a Judge and how they are the closest thing to Royalty we have in America, given their lifetime appointments. 00:40:25 - After discussing the 'best' Justice ever to have been on the court, Mary now gives us the 'worst'... and what do you know, it's another one who is sitting there currently, Clarence Thomas. In addition to questioning the constitutionality of his decisions, Mary takes issue with the ethics of his wife, Ginny Thomas working as a powerful lobbyist and consultant on cases he oversees. 00:57:56 - After a lot of bad news and despair for the cause of democracy, Dawn and Mary discuss how the idea of Revolution is both the greatest threat and the last resort of any System... and too many people want it for too many different reasons. 01:03:08 - And before we sign off, as promised, a little home. The latest justice, Ketanji Brown Jackson, has a strong record and can be a sound voice of reason in an unreasonable time. And of course we can still vote... for now. ---Thanks for listening! The Supreme Court's conservative majority appeared skeptical of race-conscious admission policies at the University of North Carolina and Harvard University throughout five hours of oral arguments on Monday. If the Court decides against the universities, it could issue a ruling broad enough to overturn decades of precedent permitting the limited use of race in college admissions and even, according to Vox Supreme Court correspondent Ian Millhiser, “prohibit the government from considering race in virtually any context, including efforts to voluntarily integrate racially segregated grade schools and other institutions." Prophets comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable, and maybe that's what our prophets are doing -- afflicting us until we shift our expectations and attitudes. Attitude shifts are often uncomfortable for me, but that's okay. A little discomfort never hurt me and, in fact, sometimes it helps me to grow. For Reflection: What about you? How do you respond to these readings? How do you respond to feeling uncomfortable? What are your expectations around feeling comfortable? Have you ever had experiences with economically poor people? A lot of people are wondering if it's time to look at "court packing," and other court reforms, to address judiciary dysfunction that we can see playing out during this election and in the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett. Look at what's happening with voting rights. The Supreme Court had been asked to intervene in several state decisions that would allow ballots postmarked by Election Day to be accepted in the first days after the election due to the high volume of mail-in ballots cast during a pandemic. On Tuesday, the Supreme Court ruled that Wisconsin mail-in ballots could not be accepted after Election Day. On Wednesday, they refused to hear a fast-tracked plea from Pennsylvania Republicans looking to block a three-day extension, and refused to block rulings allowing North Carolina to extend their deadlines. In addition, voter suppression or intimidation tactics are happening in states like Nevada, Texas, and Michigan. And one week before the election, the mail is still slow. Lastly, states led primarily by Republicans, have been trying to pack their state supreme courts for a decade, mostly for partisan advantage. Do we need a new amendment to the Constitution that would protect against a minority no longer accountable to the people they serve?
