Getting to know these people on a level that's never been done before…” This is how John Johnson describes the concept for his exciting forthcoming ICONYC TV Netflix series and it's exactly how this podcast feels. My first episode of 2022, it's a truly unique and inspiring story of a man with such a strong sense of creative ambition it's taken him around the world and back again. John's epic journey began with a passion for techno in early 90s Frankfurt and led to years of international touring and DJing throughout the 90s and early 2000s. After a departure to focus on his health and other interests such as fashion and studying a doctorate in business studies, he returned to the music game five years ago to launch ICONYC Music. A media company that lives up to its name, ICONYC now boasts TV series for Red Bull, the first ever Bitwig music academy and the aforementioned documentary series on the world's biggest streaming platform 'Netflix' that will launch next year. Around Us is a DJ / producer duo from Amsterdam who are making serious waves since 2018. Working diligently day in, day out, growing and developing their style. Respected by their colleagues and admired by the people who consume their music on the dance floor. This is Around Us. The boys quietly joined forces, without fanfare or noise and they produced since that time a lot of productions. Today in 2021, all the key players know Around Us. With the world's top DJ's such as Sasha and Hernan Cattaneo playing their productions, the future looks bright for Around Us. Sasha hammered their "Absentis" track and Cattaneo regularly aired productions such as Sleeping Blue, Bamboo, 8 Steps and United in his DJ sets and podcasts. In their own words, Around Us is “about melody”. Jan said “We look for strong melodies”. However, we do not label ourselves progressive house or melodic techno. Gaby has a slightly sunnier melodic vibe than me, I tend to go more darker and stronger in my melodies. Above all, Around Us always remains deep”. With a release list way too long to fit into this bio, stand out tracks have surfaced on some of the world's lead- ing labels such as TRAUM, Mango Alley, Manual Music, Iconyc, Magnitude Recordings and Click Records. By the end of summer 2020 the duo managed to release over 50 productions! With true dedication to music, these guys are set to continue making waves further into 2022. How we know "The Groove Collection" and Jerry? Jerry was a regular visitor on my panama parties where I was resident dj for the john digweed, Dave Seaman, Sander Kleinneberg and Sasha evenings. From one thing came another and we spoke several times about music and became friends. After a year or so he had a bookings agency, GC Bookings, where he asked us to be part of and so we did. De website, the groove collection, was were i met likeminded producers and djs like 16 bit lolitas etc on the forum and that is why i always have love for the groove collection because it all started in the early days where the groove collection was part of. Jan aka Schaamteloos dj's, Analog Effect, Around Us Since the start of my DJ career in 1990 the progressive sound find its way throughout the years and I always heard the name Jerry van Schie in the scene. I never had the change to meet him or speak to him, but we've cross paths many times. I knew his face but wasn't aware at that time he was Jerry. The Colombian born, Israel based artist made his debut on the Colombian imprint in June of 2017 with a remix (in collaboration with Kamilo Sanclemente) of 'Expression' by Dmitry Molosh. 2018 then saw Golan return for his second remix, a stunning take on Andre Sobota's 'Missing Line'. Also laying claim to releases on Lonya's Asymmetric Recordings and Guy Mantzur's Plattenbank Records, Golan now returns to Clubsonica for his first single alongside remixes from Alex O'Rion and Supacooks. Sitting comfortably in deeper territory Golan crafts a redolent framework complete with harmonious grooves, sultry hooks and spirited electronics. Diversifying his portfolio further Golan's masterstroke is to collaborate and introduce the gorgeous vocals of MILA. Hailing from Colombia and an artist of profound talent, she infuses the piece with authentic soul and genuine emotion. Breathy wails and romantic storyboards come in waves, effortlessly drifting through a maze of organic drums and melodic clusters, before reaching a serene and spiritually uplifting finale. Built around a series of melodic clusters and pixie-like fragments it’s quite mystical in nature. As it strips down into the main break you get what is perhaps one of the EPs most memorable moments; as airy refrains and a rising cinematic sphere continue to elevate the mood as the beats drop for a glorious sonic moment. The first interpretation of ‘Epiphany In The Woods'’ is provided by Simply City who is making his label debut. Hailing from Chile but now based in Montreal, Cesar Romero aka Simply City has become a fixture in the city’s burgeoning nightlife, earning a spot as one of Stereo’s resident DJs. On the production front he lays claim to releases on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Nick Warren’s Hope Recordings. Now making his first appearance on Or Two Strangers he delivers a superb take on 'Epiphany In The Woods'. Incredibly rhythmic with fresh design qualities and soft, creamy melodies, it moves elegantly across it's ten minute running time. Immediately captivating as an array of shifty atmospherics and tranquil melodies create a redolent air. Warm, dreamy overlays soon follow and you’re effortlessly taken away into a melodic wonderland. Subtle yet powerful, it’s blissful theme plays off smooth chord changes and subtle modulation for a string of magic moments, making for an exhilarating third act finale. The second and final interpretation of ‘Epiphany In The Woods’ is provided by Golan Zocher who also makes his label debut. Whether paired with sometime studio partner Kamilo Sanclemente or going solo, the Colombia born, Israel based artist always seems to find his tracks in the sets of Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. It’s a trend that has found him amongst the progressive house elite and now leads him to Antrim's burgeoning Or Two Strangers imprint. Always a creative remixer, Golan provides a quirky yet powerful version which complements the previous two mixes wonderfully. The groove gets beefed up with punchy kicks and thick slabs of bass while a mountainous tonal theme begins to take shape. The rugged rhythmic qualities sit in stark contrast to the melodic elements from the original, eventually leading to a tranquil break before phasing noise reignites the groove for a powerful finale. A superb remix from Golan which rounds out an impressive EP from Sebastian Sellares, who continues to impress with his new moniker. How would you describe your roots in a few words? A: To me Electronic Music was only connected to parties and dancing way before I started to make it by myself. From 1998 - 2010 I only focused on Hiphop, produced beats and wrote the lyrics. But beside that I always loved to dance to Jungle Music and Drum And Bass, had some Happy Hardcore tapes and loved to listen to The Prodigy, Pendulum, Noisia and acts like that. It was a slow process as I lost the connection to rap and started to plunge into the universe of Electronic Music. I soaked it all in and got to know all the different genres and their characteristics. While listening and comparing I started my own projects and was immediately hooked by all the possibilities and new influences. I started to visit a lot of clubs and spent many nights studying tracks, how they affect people and what atmospheres they can generate. When you look at my first Rauschhaus releases you can clearly hear my musical development and where my inspiration came from. Q: What do these tracks still mean to you? And would you still play some of them? A: Each of the tracks that I've chosen has a special meaning to me and reminds me of certain places or people. I still love to hear them and it took me quite a while to find the right tracks for this podcast. Most of them won’t fit into my playlist now but while compiling I thought that it would be a good idea to put the folder on my USB Stick to be prepared for the right moment Q: Which future Rauschhaus projects are on the way? A: There are a lot of upcoming projects and I was really busy during the last months. I will release an EP on ICONYC, collaborate with Mango Alley again and will put out two tracks on Parquet. Beside that I continued to collaborate with my buddies Peter Groskreutz and Peer Kusiv and we finished a few amazing tracks together. You can expect a lot of new music soon and I am already planning new projects for the second half of the year.
