At a math teacher Ben saw how kids sometimes get stuck on trying only to get the right answer without "sitting" in the problem and perhaps seeing things from different angles. He brings to life some great examples in history where breakthroughs have emerged from smart people getting stuck and he makes a great point for why this should be something we value and teach to our kids as well. Ben, author of the upcoming Math For English Majors is a genius at making the "hard" things (like math concepts) easy to understand and you will love our conversation.

At least some of this could be found false in experiments. If you want to do technical AI alignment research, you'll need some amount of non-trivial math knowledge. It may be more theoretical, or with more ML/biology grounding, but it'll definitely be math. How do you learn all this math? "Self-teaching" is almost a misnomer, compared to just "learning". I don't need to distill something for others, I only need myself to grok it. I may use distillation or adjacent techniques to help myself grok it, but like any N=1 self-experiment, it only needs to work for me. [1] So then... what helps me understand things? Formal rules that are written precisely Wordy concepts that one could use in an essay Math is technically the former, but real mathematicians (even the great ones!) actually use it more like the latter. That is, they use a lot of "intuition" built up over time. You can't survive on intuition alone (unless you have the genetic improbability of Ramanujan's brain). And you can't survive on rigor alone (according to all bounded human minds doing math research). Heck, even learning rigorously/boring is nontrivial (since e.g. small errors are harder to correct when you're learning an alien system). The Mathopedia concept is, in many ways, the "wordy" version. Viliam notes that math's "hardness" (i.e. objectivity) means you can't just teach it in the wordy version. After all, there is generally one real canonical definition for a mathematical object. And yet... both Viliam and Yudkowsky say that math is fun when you know what you're doing. I kind of agree! I've had fun doing (what seemed like) math, at least twice in my life! OK, so it's simple! Just make sure to understand everything thoroughly before moving to the next thing, and "play with the ideas" to understand them better. Except... there's a problem. AI timelines. Giving children quality tutoring and new K-12 curricula won't work even if we have 20 years before existentially-risky AI is used. 5 years is almost reasonable to learn deeply about a subfield or two, enough to make original contributions. AI alignment, if it involves enough math to justify this post, requires deeper-than-average understanding, and possibly an ability to create entirely new mathematics. And timelines might be as short as a year or two. [2] Tangent (for large grantmakers and orgs only) Why didn't MIRI or other groups prepare for this moment earlier? Why didn't MIRI say "OK, we have $X to fund researchers, and $Y left over, so let's put $Z towards hedging our short-timelines bets. We can do that using human enhancement and/or in-depth teaching of the relevant hard (math) parts. Let's do that now!"? I think it's something like... MIRI had pre-ML-calibrated short timelines. Now they have post-ML short timelines. In both cases, they wouldn't think "sharpening the saw"-type strategies worthwhile. And if short timelines are true now, then it's too late to use them. Luckily, insofar as AI governance does anything, we can get longer timelines. And insofar as you (a large grantmaker or org with funds/resources to spare on hedging your timeline scenarios) have enough money to hedge your timeline bets, you should fund and/or set up such longer-term programs. If you put 80% credence in 5-year timelines, but you also control $100 million in funding (e.g. you're OpenPhil), then you should be doing math-learning and intelligence enhancement programs! The Challenge So clearly, a person needs to be able to get deep understanding of lots of math (in backchaining-resistant worlds, that means lots of math). Within a year or two. In time to, and with the depth needed to, come up with new good ideas. This is the chal...

TL:DR I designed an experiment where I committed to spend two 12 hour days trying to learn as much deep-learning math as possible, basically from scratch. I had never taken classes on linear algebra or multivariable calculus or deep learning, and when I cracked open many AI papers, I was terrified by symbols and words I didn't understand. 7 months ago I wrote up a short doc about how I was going to remedy my lack of technical knowledge: I collected some textbooks and some online courses, and I decided to hire a tutor to meet a few hours a week. I had the first two weeks of meetings, it was awesome, then regular meetings got disrupted by travel, and I never came back to it. When I thought about my accumulating debt of technical knowledge, my cached answer was “Oh, that might take six months to get up to speed. I don't have the time.” Then, watching my productivity on other projects over the intervening months, I noticed two things: There appeared to be massive variance in my productivity. Sometimes, in a single day, I would get more done than I had accomplished in previous weeks. I seemed to both enjoy and get more done by “sprinting” through certain projects, eg. by spending 10 hours on it in a single day, rather than spreading that same work out over 2 hours a week for 5 weeks. It was, for some reason, way more motivating and seemingly more efficient to sprint. Also, when I asked myself what I thought the main bottlenecks were for addressing my technical debt problem, I identified two categories: Time (I felt busy all the time, and was afraid of committing too much to one project) A combination of lacking Motivation, Accountability and Fun Then, as my mind wandered, I started to put 2 and 2 together: Perhaps these new things I had noticed about my productivity, could be used to address the bottlenecks in my technical debt? I decided to embark on an experiment: how much technical background on deep learning could I learn in a single weekend? My understanding of the benefits of this experiment were as follows: Committing “a weekend” felt like a much smaller time cost than committing “a few months”, even if they were the same number of hours. No Distraction: I could design my environment to minimize distractions for two days, something it would be intractable to do to the same degree for several months. “Trying to learn as much as possible” felt like a challenge. I was, to be honest, pretty scared. I didn't know what I was doing, it felt extreme, but that also made it exciting and fun. I had some historical data that I might be good at this kind of sprinting, and framing this as an experiment to see what I could learn about my productivity added another layer of discovery-driven motivation and fun. What if I learned more about how to be productive and get hard things done via this experiment? As far as I knew, nobody else among my peers had done this - but I suspected that more people than me had the same problems, and that if I conducted this experiment, I might learn things that would be helpful to others, which added yet another layer of discovery-driven motivation and fun. Accountability: Once I told somebody about this, it was hard to back out. It's way easier for them to monitor me for a weekend than for a few months. Results I'd consider the experiment a success: I finished the whole curriculum in ~18 hours, and I got a lot of neat take-aways I'll go over below. At the end of day 1, after 12 hours of cram...

Math and Physics are two of science's fundamental and most exciting branches. For centuries, scientists have used Math and Physics to answer some of the world's most fascinating questions and help us understand the universe that we live in. But no matter how important it is in our daily lives, most students now shy away from these subjects and is disinterested in them. For this week's Outer Travel, Inner Journey, we will talk with Ulli and Daria, two teachers of Math and Physics, as we dig deeper into the cause of students' fear in these subjects and find ways to bring a positive light to it. For Ulli and Daria, the low interest and fear of taking up Math and Physics stem from how it is taught in today's educational system. These subjects are taught by teachers and educators that are not experts on the topics, making it hard to translate concepts into simple explanations. Since Physics and Math are complicated and complex, making them as basic as possible is crucial to allow students to grasp the concepts. It does not also help that the system is forcing teachers to take a shortcut in teaching these subjects with the view that not all are good at them; therefore, students won't need it. This is a struggle that Daria deals with because she believes that students must understand the whole process to connect with the subject and apply it in the real world. Both agreed that to capture the interest of their students and increase their appreciation of Math and Physics, teachers like them should engage their students based on their interests and relate them in a way that students can easily understand the concepts. For parents, it is also vital to continue being curious and open to learning themselves. This way, they can be students and models themselves for their children too. Anurupa Ganguly is the CEO and founder of Prisms of Reality, where she is reimagining math education using VR technology. According to various studies, the interest around careers in STEM is significantly low, and Anurupa attributes this to the lack of application and physical understanding embedded in our education system. She believes that the VR technology Prisms of Reality has created will bridge this gap. It is a mission-driven methodology, where students can learn the abstraction that is often missing in education. I asked Monica to come on the show as a special guest to talk about her experience homeschooling, learning math and the power of looking at the world through a math lens. Math always seems to be a topic that seems to give quite a few parents feelings of angst. I often hear questions like; I am not good at math, so how will I be able to teach it to my kids if I homeschool? How do unschoolers learn math? Can kids learn math without the drills, worksheets and curriculum? Can math actually be interesting? I also see many parents that love the idea of self directed education until it comes to learning math. Somewhere we learn this idea that math is the subject that must be drilled, memorized and come with a little bit of torture, unless you happen to be a math genius. If you have beliefs similar to this, have you ever reflected on why you think that is true? Is it valid? As a trainer of teachers who train other teachers, Sara Shunkwiler, a professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Education and tutor of dyslexia, finds it hard to access research about dyslexia and related subjects. Why HR is important Aditya's Bio Dr. Aditya Nagrath is a visionary leader on a mission to change the way that the world teaches mathematics. Dr. Nagrath is the co-founded Elephant Learning Math Academy which is a gamification of a proven curriculum. On average, children in Elephant Learning learn 1.5 years of mathematics in 10 weeks using the system just 30 minutes per week. Dr. Nagrath, at age 14, taught himself C++ and continued on to read books on game development and neural networks which are the basis for modern day artificial intelligence. He graduated from the University of Denver with a dual major of Mathematics and Computer Science, continuing on to graduate school while working full time as a software developer to graduate with a PhD in Mathematics & Computer Science 7 years later. After at decade in University, Dr. Nagrath graduated to found Elephant Head Software where he lead a team of no more than 10 engineers to bring over 35 different product lines with over 50 different applications to market between 2009 and 2016. In 2016, Dr. Nagrath co-founded Elephant Learning with Professor Alvaro Arias from the University of Denver in order to bring transformational change to America's education system.  3 out of 4 students are not proficient at High School Mathematics, leading to 69% of STEM majors switching majors to a major with less mathematics. Math deficiencies happen completely amongst income lines leading to a preservation of the cycle of poverty as mathematic scores often predict high school drop out and over all scores. Here is the news.Four Chinese volunteers have concluded their 180-day stay in a sealed space capsule in south China&`&s Shenzhen City, testing technology intended for space exploration.The volunteers, three men and one woman, were selected from 2,100 candidates after the Astronaut Center of China launched a call for volunteers in May last year. They have lived in a sealed capsule with a floor space of 370 square meters for the past 180 days.The project shed light on the physiological effects of a hermetic environment and changes to biological rhythms.The volunteers told the Xinhua News Agency that they were exhausted and had suffered both mentally and physically during the latter part of the test.One of the volunteers said the support and encouragement from colleagues outside motivated them to hold on. Two other volunteers said they practiced Tai chi and read books to keep busy.One of the purposes of the project was designed to test a life support system based on technology used on the Shenzhou spacecraft.Data was collected on the growth of plants during the experiment, as well as the emotional, intellectual and physical condition of the volunteers.This is Special English.A series of awards has been presented in Beijing to people and agencies who have contributed to the development of China&`&s education industry over the past year.The annual awards, called Golden Wings, were launched by Chinese internet technology company NetEase&`&s education channel in 2009. I&`&m Mark Griffiths in Beijing.British education officials expect the benefits of the Shanghai Mastery Model for Teaching and Learning Math to reach about half the primary schools in England as a result of an exchange program now well underway. In the third round of the program that started more than two years ago, some 30 math teachers from Shanghai ended their two-week stay in the United Kingdom, in which they shared their Chinese-style teaching methods in 35 primary schools. In July, the UK government rolled out the Chinese mastery approach to math instruction in more than 8,000 institutions, using funding of up to 41 million pounds, roughly 52 million U.S. dollars, over four years to improve British students&`& performance. Clare Fowler, director of math education policy for England at the UK Department for Education, said teaching methods for math in UK schools have changed a great deal. The exchange program between China and the UK started in September 2014, when 71 British math teachers went to Shanghai to spend time with their exchange partners at high-performing schools and colleges. Between November 2014 and March 2015, more than 120 math teachers from China taught at more than 200 schools in the UK and almost 1,000 British teachers listened to the classes taught by their Shanghai counterparts.This is Special English.Chinese and Israeli research institutes and companies are keen to cooperate on developing medical robots.Nine Israeli companies attending an exposition in Guangzhou have brought with them robotics currently used in spinal surgery and 3D imaging, as well as medicinal dosage handling devices.Israeli Robotics Association Chairperson Zvi Shiller said Israel has developed robots to help the disabled go to the toilet, shower and climb escalators. Israeli firms are actively looking for partners to produce and sell their robots in the Chinese market. More than 40 Chinese companies have shown interest during the expo, while others have pitched business ideas to their Israeli counterparts.One Chinese tech firm is investing heavily in patrol robots. A senior company official said his team have had a hard time overcoming some technological issues two years into the project and are hoping to find Israeli partners.Another Chinese tech company is working to combine speech recognition with health care. The company is working with its major shareholder China Mobile on a series of voice-to-text and text-to-voice applications.In a recent experiment with Peking University, the company designed a voice recognition device for doctors. It envisions more coordinated development between economy and society in the zones, with science and technology playing a large role.Specific measures should address the key tasks outlined in the 2030 Agenda, endorsed by the United Nations Summit for Sustainable Development last year.The plan lists prevention of serious and infectious disease, elder care, targeted poverty elimination, and treatment of soil and water as key tasks. Policy support, including financial backing, is promised.The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a blueprint for eradicating poverty worldwide by 2030.By piloting innovative projects in the development zones, China hopes to replicate successes nationwide and offer China&`&s solutions to other countries.This is Special English.Only 9 of 31 provincial-level regions on the Chinese mainland have raised the minimum wage level in 2016. I&`&m Mark Griffiths in Beijing.An elite primary school in Beijing has denied allegations of bullying on its campus after an open letter written by a Beijing mother about how her 10-year-old son was bullied at school went viral online. The Zhongguancun Second Primary School said in a statement that the incident was accidental and did not constitute bullying or violence. However, the statement said that the school was sorry for any hurt caused to the student and his parents. The faculty was told by the three students involved that one of them emptied a rubbish bin over the victim from the adjacent cubical, just, in their words, "to tease him", while the third child was watching and laughing. The victim&`&s mother posted an open letter on WeChat, describing how her son had been bullied for almost a year, and that he suffers from acute stress disorder, which is characterized by severe anxiety and depression. The mother&`&s open letter has been shared more than 100,000 times on WeChat, and read more than 6 million times on Weibo within days of being posted. The parents of the "bullied" student are not immediately available for comment on the school&`&s latest statement. It’s accepted economic wisdom that the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer. But as Dr. Robert Sigler, Teresa Heinz Professor of Cognitive Psychology at Carnegie Mellon University, pointed out at TC’s 2010 Tisch Lecture, that statement applies to the accumulation of mathematical understanding as well. That is: students who enter a classroom with greater proficiency in math can grow their knowledge base at faster rates than those with lesser proficiency. (The Tisch Lecturer began with an endowment by Trustee Laurie M. Tisch to support a lecture and visiting professorship that continues for one academic year.)
