On this episode Ms. Jill Garvin, Wing Director of Psychological Health, speaks to Ms. Kristen Alexander about the importance of communication, connection and community when it comes to relationships. Ms. Kristen Alexander is a Heroes In Transition spouses group coordinator. Heroes In Transition provides many family, couples and veterans programs to our community. heroesintransition.org ------SCRIPT------ Jill: hello everybody this is Jill Garvin the director of psychological health for the 102nd Intelligence Wing welcome back to our wellness podcast today I have Kristen Alexander here with us she is from heroes and transition a lot of you have probably heard about them one of my favorite organizations and favorite people they assist veterans and military families and do a lot for our community and for a lot of our members here at the 102nd actually Kristen and her husband John they are both couples group facilitators and Kristin is the spouse's group facilitator and John is the veterans facilitator co-facilitator am I saying that the right facilitators right Kristen: yeah coordinators facilities that's what I have to say it's all good Jill: yeah so coordinators I apologize so one of the reasons I wanted to talk to Kristen about some of the programs and offerings that that heroes in transition has is because a lot of people i'm finding especially since Covid have really been struggling in relationships marriages that have broken apart or relationships that are really really struggling and a lot of people are struggling right now and I have definitely had an uptick in in my office and my arena around people struggling with that and heroes in transition certainly has stepped up during Covid and and is offering a lot of different things to meet the needs of our veterans and their families and since Kristen is involved in the the program for for couples and and in relationships I wanted her to tell us about what they're doing and introduce yourself and tell us how did you get involved with heroes in transition you and your husband you know give us a little a little background Kristen: awesome thanks Jill so my name is Kristen Alexander as Jill said and we are going into our fifth year with heroes it is my husband had started with them in a conversation of facilitating a veterans group and carrying that on and I was kind of like yeah well there’s spouses two so because my husband's a veteran so we've been through the deployments and you know all the things and so that really sparked an awesome conversation about starting with couples first and building the trust there and then breaking off and doing kind of separate groups so we started from the grassroots up and we started with the couples group we created a couples group and it just has continued to grow and grow and grow now that we have now we have to do lotteries for our events Jill: Wow Kristen: yeah so it's been amazing and it's been amazing to see the growth not only just within the organization in the group but the growth and the friendships that have come together because of that space Jill: i've heard some amazing feedback from our members that have gone on some of the couples events and retreats and it sounds like it is really well planned and just very therapeutic and amazing Kristen: yeah it's really great coming from because i'm not a therapist you know I don't i'm a spouse you know I am half of the married couple so that's the role that we take with it is you know creating the relatedness of another angle you know and what that does is that opens up the door for more conversation for maybe more needs that whether it be the veteran or the couple or the spouse might need they tend to be a little bit more open to maybe furthering on with other areas but you know reading just some of the things that you know we get feedback on and with covet it's been tough because a big part of what we do is we would do we do monthly we do bi-monthly events so what we do is we do like last month February was a couple's group event and we did a virtual valentine's dinner that was amazing and then this month we'll do the veterans will do an event and the spouses will do events separate and then the month after april we'll go back to a couple so we kind of alternate so it kind of it builds up the individuality because to be able to be strong as a couple you have to have your you have to know who you are right like so you still have to have that sense of self and independence Jill: yeah Kristen: because sometimes that goes away as a military spouse right but thank goodness for zoom we've been able to go virtual and it was like hey we don't have to give up everything but it has been a big part of like I said what we do is we would do an event to kind of get people together socializing that kind of thing and then we would do dinner and not being able to do the dinner was a fear that we would lose that connection because when you're sitting down having dinner and that's where the connections are coming in the smaller conversations and you know that kind of thing and but we've been able to through being virtual we've been able to still somewhat keep that connection and we've actually had a lot of new people join us which has been great because a lot of people don't feel comfortable coming into a group Jill: right Kristen: so the virtual aspect has been a blessing there's a blessing in everything as we know has been a blessing to allow people that maybe would feel a little bit intimidated or uncomfortable to be around people physically at first Jill: yeah Kristen: to kind of come in this way you know and like one of the things was feedback we got was it's such a pleasure knowing that in difficult times we can still grow and adapt to continue to get to get out there and build your support group you know so just knowing that providing that space for them you know and don't think we're not getting anything from it Jill: of course yeah Kristen: you know it's just it's it's pretty amazing Jill: so so how did you and john so you're doing this as a as a couple right obviously and what what kind since you're a spouse as well what sorts of things have helped you along your journey in marriage as a military spouse what what things have helped the two of you stay married Kristen: yeah so there's that yeah communication for sure and a lot of what takes a long time is to really learn how to listen and listen in a way that you're you get the intention of the conversation right so it's like kind of building those skills you know and it lit I remember when we went to therapy back in the day you know and just one of the exercises that we had to do was sit back to back and take take 10 minutes talking taking turns because then you're not interrupting Jill: yeah Kristen: he couldn't see my face because he doesn't because I was a crier I might still be but you know doing things like that you know so like some of one of the exercises that we did during one of our retreats was it was called the recreation exercise so one partner would say something and then would express whatever they were gonna express and then the other partner would come back and say okay so I heard this is what I heard and would say it back and then they would have a conversation did they really hear what that person was saying Jill: yeah Kristen: you know so it's really and it's just practice and when times get crazy we all fall out of it a little bit so those these reminders of the things that we do and we continue to really put in how important communication is is a good reminder for everyone that you just can't be successful without communication Jill: yeah communication is so key Kristen: yeah Jill: and i'm glad you mentioned well just an idea of one of the things that you do on the at the retreat yeah tell us a little bit what are the events like what do you do Kristen: yeah so we have twice a year so we do that every other month so that every month there is a an event for a veteran spouse Jill: and what type of events the this month Kristen: for the spouses I am running a i'm leading a vision board workshop so we all and we're gonna focus on hope like what can we bring you know what can we create and really just kind of getting down I have a whole worksheet there's a process it's not just cutting out pictures and pasting them they're gonna we're gonna do some digging you know in creating and with that the veterans this month are doing they're doing yoga and meditation which is awesome Jill: with Sarah right Kristen: yeah yep saturday we love Sarah yeah and also too I know they're still doing they do some work with Marie Bartram also and I know that they're still doing some like weekly virtual events too just to kind of keep people connected which is super important every saturday I do a spouse's coffee chat virtual which has really been a huge part of staying connected you know about Jill: I love that kind of thing what time is that Kristen: 9 a.m on saturdays and we do have a facebook group for couples and we also have email lists that I can give you you know when we before we wrap up how people can get connected to that kind of stuff but what we do I want to a couple of our biggest things is twice a year we do a couples retreat so we you know and they both have a little bit of a different focus one of the couple's retreats is really about building the community in teamwork you know also working on communication skills with each other but like building community and just really getting that you're not by yourself in this you're you've got people you know and then the other one is really digging deeper into your relationship in really just looking at how you can work on those communication skills different things different exercises that you can do how to communicate in a way that is effective because there's all different levels of communication Jill: It is a skill Kristen: as we know and to be able to communicate effectively is a huge skill you know and you know unfortunately we're not born with it we have to create it and but we also have to be committed to it Jill: yeah Kristen: you know and really just being able to get on each to get on each other's level really just listen to the other person you know one of the things that we learned was doing a daily temperature reading and what that is is you just there's like five different topics and you take turns and there's no discussion about it you're literally just filling in this is what's happening this is what's new blah blah blah you know whatever that kind of thing Jill: nice Kristen: yeah it's really cool Jill: well I was going to say you mentioned uh community connection communication and committed and just that just paints such a wonderful picture on yeah how we have successful relationships whether they're friendships or romantic relationships in our marriages but especially that connection piece and I love that you guys are keeping folks connected Kristen: yeah thank you it's you know and really just looking at again some of the things that they give us back you know the feedback like what stands out is reconnect relearning love languages you know that kind of stuff really just having one-on-one time to themselves instead of always being a parent oracle or a worker or you know something like that and what happens is a lot of times they don't especially with our military families and couples they don't have family here you know so they don't really get a lot of that one-on-one time you know so now when events come up they're a little bit more apt to look you know might look for a babysitter and make that extra effort to get that one-on-one time and then when they experience that one-on-one time they're like oh that's who you are oh I forgot Jill: yeah you're an adult too Kristen: yeah right you know so it's really it's really been so amazing Jill: yeah you guys do so much and again I know we're all appreciative of especially during Covid just stepping up and and having all of this and and because most everything is free right Kristen: everything is everything is free Jill: which is amazing yep yep and and I love yeah there are a lot of uh silver linings that came from Covid especially zoom and like you said there are a lot of veterans or service members those that suffer with anxiety or ptsd and they don't necessarily want to go into a crowded room with other people and so having the option to to see people on a screen and you're in your own safe comfortable environment is is wonderful yeah something wonderful Kristen: it kind of fills that gap a little bit yeah and for our valentine's dinner we had you know we had everybody got to pick up their dinner they got a choice of their meal they went and picked it up at marshland 2 and we met on zoom at 7 pm and there were a lot of people that didn't know each other because we've been in this for a year so we haven't really been able to you know do a lot of the connecting but by the time that dinner lasted like three hours and we were like wow like we laughed and people just got to really know each other and people were sharing and it was just you know it was just really great for them to have that like ah yeah with my people Jill: a breather yeah and and and there's such power and just being around other people that you can identify with and understand military life culture marriage all of those things do you guys have something coming up Kristen: we have well in March 20th we have the spouses the spouses event and that's going to be a vision board workshop and then the veterans are doing they're doing yoga and meditation I think that might be March 13th might be the week before I think maybe and then there's also we have a families group too and Casey and Aaron and Vanheusen run that and that's amazing so we do and those are monthly events and you know we couldn't do it without the hard work of our donors and sponsors who are like Jill: yeah I know and that's because they see all the great work you're doing they love you guys it's just amazing to see the outpouring of support and love that heroes in transition gets from the community Kristen: it's been amazing and we do have it's the full moon yeah that's why i'm but we we do have the Ruck4HIT coming up which is like one of our aside from the gala well both of those are our biggest fundraisers and the Ruck4HIT like everybody can take part you can run walk you can do whatever and that is going to be based right out of Mashpee and that is the end of April April 30th to Jill: yeah so that every you guys will be meeting at the heritage park Kristen: yep that's going to be our home base and we have teams and we've been doing that I mean we've been doing that I think this is our fifth or sixth year doing that the first one we did the beta run to new york city and back and that was pretty amazing Jill: everybody knows about the rock Kristen: I mean I think so but it's so great and that's when and we also what happens with the ruck is we have a lot of the people that participate in our groups they that's where they come to give back so they volunteer and they kind of you know help the whole thing happen but again we couldn't do it without the people that sponsor us and you know our donors our board of directors are amazing they just have so much trust in us which is amazing yeah Jill: yeah well you do amazing things and you have amazing results you've helped a lot of people like I said there's so many 102nd members here that have given me feedback over the years about oh just all the different ways that heroes in transition has helped them and and we've been able to call on you guys when we've needed something or needed a resource for someone it's just great to be able to pick up the phone and and get you guys anytime so thank you so is there anything else you'd like to mention that that's coming up or how do people find you Kristen: people we have we do have a website at heroesintransition.org and an easy way to remember how to get connected to the groups it would be if you were looking to get information about the spouses group you would email spouses@herosintransition.org if you wanted to get information about the veterans group veterans at harrows in transition and couples couples at heroes families families at heroes so we try to keep it simple you know that kind of thing I know the couples group we have a private facebook group that is specifically for military couples the families group has a facebook group for that but definitely go and you know like heroes in transition on facebook and you'll see all the connections there Jill: you're on instagram too right Kristen: I think so I i should be better at instagram and just Jill: some people are more instagram Kristen: it's yeah yeah yeah but I think we have an amazing social media guy Chris he's just awesome and yeah he he gets all of our stuff everywhere yeah it needs to go Jill: and the emails you mentioned if they go on the website all of those Kristen: they'll be able to find you know find that too you know and then they'll also be able to see you know we're pretty good about you know responding quickly and you know like the spouse's group events are for spouses of military members you know the veterans events or for that you know that kind of thing so yeah so Jill: wonderful Kristen: so that's it like just come see us no matter what rain shine we make it happen Jill: especially with zoom it doesn't matter what the weather is Kristen: yeah in person not in person Jill: you know and I love the the that you guys are doing rock the way you're doing it I i don't think I could have ever participated before but i'm planning on doing it this year yeah I have been running but but just again the way that uh some of the different options I think will make it more available Kristen: yeah it's we had people from other countries participate last year we had so that's the thing with Covid too like it's kind of you have to be creative right Jill: yeah Kristen: and you have to open up we had families participate together you know and they would send in their miles you know and then we'd add them up on on our team or whatever yeah yeah definitely a way whether you want to come and walk and you know the registration form is out I believe which is cool so anybody can register can register individually or as a team and then or you know come down and help us out you know just be a smiling face and cheer us on because we'll be tired Jill: well thank you and please thank uh Cindy and Nicole for all and your wonderful board I appreciate everything that you guys do for the community and I appreciate you coming on today and we'll definitely have you guys back because you're always doing new and innovative and ongoing things and I want to remind people that you guys are here so thank you Kristen: anytime thank you

Haydn has composed up to 68 string quartets in his composition career, among them, the six string quartets in op.76 are among Haydn's most ambitious chamber works and op.76 is also the last complete set of string quartets he composed. Mr.Rob Kapilow said in his book, ‘The movement begins with a joke'. The two chords that traditionally end a Classical period piece are wittily used as a beginning. The effect is like starting a film with the words “The End.” Now, do you notice the joke? Right after the two chords, the silence that follow are as important as the chords themselves. In fact, silence is a very essential element in music.(其实,休⽌ 是⾳乐中⾮常重要的部分) 拿今天的⽚段举例,the silence not only give you time to take in Haydn's witty gesture, to let the joke land, so to speak, but they give you time, if you are listening for plot, to wonder what Haydn could possibly be up to. While listening, each time the silence happens, each time you might wonder, “what will happen next?” Maybe you expect something else to happen, because this theme seems to be so simple and seems to be and end, but Haydn breaks your expectation by repeating the same things for three times. He continues the comedy by running three “The Ends” together without intervening parses to make a kind of “combo package”: The End, The End, The End. This second idea that immediately follows the opening is a folklike repeatednote accompaniment figure that continues underneath a lively tune played by the violin, then by the cello. The liveliness and energy contained in this second phrase fresh our feelings and break our expectation before. It makes it interesting to listen to as now we are listening horizontally, to a continuous melody, instead of vertically, to two chords. Now, let me ask you a question. What do you think will happen next?(现在,让我问⼀个问题,你觉得接下来,会发⽣什么呢?) What was that first phrase all about? Are we supposed to take two chords repeated five times seriously as a theme, as a main character in the movement's story? Or was it simply a witty introduction never to be heard again, with the violin/cello tune of the second phrase being the “real” topic of the piece? Do the two phrases relate in any way? Will there be any development based on these themes? What will happen next?(第⼀个乐句讲了什么呢? Your brain will be bursting with endless possibilities and questions. Mr.Kapilow说,“If there are a thousand people at a concert, there are a thousand different performances occurring simultaneously.” What will happen next?

(And for more on rulerships, visit the episode with one of our favorite titles - Episode 14, Retrograde Minds, Cazimi Hearts, Can’t Lose.) . 4:20 – Mercury joins Venus in the out-of-bounds club (May 16)! With Pisces’s connection to infectious disease and viruses, Mars is definitely wearing his face mask while on deck! . 12:01 – First Pluto, then Saturn… and now Venus turns retrograde at 22 degrees Gemini! REevaluate RElationships, REegotiate, REvisit, REdo... words that begin with the letters “RE” are favored during REtrograde times! And, it’s a perfect time for Jen to RE-lobby April to move to Minneapolis… the home of the Twins, no less! How perfect is that for Gemini season? . 14:56 – The Sabian symbol where Venus turns retrograde is, “A barn dance.” This speaks of retracing your steps and an awareness of what it’s like to be in another person’s shoes. And hey, while Venus is moving backwards, standard astro-wisdom holds that you might want to avoid major decisions related to money, relationships, and your appearance. Just sayin’. . 20:11 – ** Moonwatch**! The Last Quarter Moon is at 24°13’ Aquarius (May 14) on the Sabian symbol, “A butterfly with the right wing more perfectly formed.” This speaks of minor imperfections and imbalance… but that right wing is really exquisite. The Sun is on, “A large well-kept public park.” (This Sabian symbol was last seen when Pluto stationed to go retrograde – REvisit Episode 22, Taurus New Moon & Venus Gone Wild.) And put on your leisure suit while you’re at it – these are lovely, pretty, slow symbols, with open space for R&R. . 24:57 – The retrograde parade marches on! Jupiter reverses direction this week as well (May 14 – Sept 12). When the outer planets turn around, we usually notice it a couple of days before and after. This is a good retrograde for self-awareness, inner growth, and self-guided studies. . 29:10 – FYI: April’s book, Astrological Transits, is listed as unavailable on Amazon.com through July … but it’s not being revised! April April 11 & 12, 2020 - Easter at Chesapeake is always a special celebration – this year is no exception. It's worth noting that in all four gospels, the resurrection of Jesus Christ was in many ways a quiet miracle. But not only a quiet miracle, it is in many ways a very small miracle. A very private miracle. No crowds, no cheers, no thunder or lightening. Just a quiet miracle that forever changed the hearts of every person who would believe in Him. For in the resurrection of Christ, we find not only life, but the Life.

Not once has anyone asked where she spent the first two years. Her husband saved for an online masters degree and got a certification from an affordable accredited online school. J and April both agree that a degree is more of a stepping stone, and that where you get it most times doesn't really matter. 2 - Growing a side hustle to a full time income April started selling digital products 7 years ago, when she started having ideas for lesson plans that she wanted to share with others. She started selling product based learning lesson plans which took off, and put several worksheets and plans into a bundle to sell to other teachers. After several years she started making a full time income from her side hustle, which she initially used to pay off student loan debt and now to reach financial freedom. Her success means she has much more flexibility and can spend more time with her children. 3 - Strategies to make your product stand out Having a good copy and marketing strategy is essential to getting your product out there. April explains the importance of branding and learning about colours and copy. She keeps her design minimalist and clean, and makes sure to use the right keywords and do SEO. She puts herself in her audiences' shoes to be able to communicate effectively what her digital product does. She also uses Pinterest and Instagram, and attributes her large amount of sales to having a lot of content on social media. Questions? Like or dislike? Leave us a comment! Have you given much thought to the layout or shape of your garden beds? Do they follow the natural lines and slopes of the landscape? Are they geometric? Long beds with corners? Maybe you’ve tried a circle garden. If you’re just beginning - border beds - beds anchored by a backdrop (like a house or a fence) are the easiest to plan and execute. Often overlooked, one thing to consider in border beds is to add some stepping stones or even a small path along the back to provide access points that make tending your garden easier.  Brevities #OTD In 1783: It’s the birthday of Scottish author, garden designer, and botanist John Claudius Loudon.(Books By This Author)A massively popular and breathtakingly prolific writer on horticulture, John focused on serving the needs of the expanding middle class who wanted to have smaller gardens.  1838, Loudon wrote in his book call The Suburban Gardener and Villa Companion, “A suburban residence with a small portion of land attached will contain all that is essential to happiness." Loudon created and published a magazine called The Gardener’s Magazine. It started out as quarterly. The first issue sold 4,000 copies. It soon became bi-monthly. Loudon used the platform to introduce a new landscape perspective which he called “gardenesque”.     Prior to Loudon, the prevailing landscape style of the was the “picturesque” view.  In contrast with the big picture or natural perspective of the picturesque garden style, Loudon wanted to draw attention to individual specimens - isolating them by removing surrounding plants or by using geometrical beds.  During Loudon’s time, exotic plants were the rage and a controlled garden was the best way to feature specimen plants.   Loudon's "Gardenesque style” or The Plant Collector’s Garden with formal features and botanical variety was very popular with Victorian gardens.  Loudon favored circular beds, of the type  which can still be seen in the flower garden at Greenwich Park,  because they show plants so well and because they are instantly  'recognizable' as the work of man.   John Loudon said,  “Any creation to be recognized as a work of art, must be such as can never be mistaken for a work of nature.”   Loudon invented the term “arboretum” - a garden of trees designed for scientific and educational purposes.  He also  had some thoughts about the value of public green spaces or “breathing zones” in cities.     Loudon married writer Jane Webb.  Jane was indispensable to him.  After an attack of rheumatic fever in 1806, Loudon suffered from reduced mobility in his limbs. In 1825, his right arm had to be amputated at the shoulder without anesthesia.  Around midnight on December 14, 1843, Loudon was dictating a book to his wife when he collapsed into her arms and died. The book was called, Self-instruction to Young Gardeners.   Born #OTD April 8, 1892, America's sweetheart, Hollywood legend, and lover of trees, Mary Pickford born Gladys Marie Smith.   Jump on twitter, search for “Mary Pickford Tree” and you’ll see images of Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford planting a tree at their PickFair estate. #ArborDay   Mary Pickford (Books By This Author)was the first to plant a tree, a Japanese cedar, in the Forest of Fame at the California Botanic Garden.   Trivia/Folklore says that Mary Pickford used to eat Flowers - specifically roses. Thought that they'd make her beautiful and they did,   Katie Melua sang a song called Mary Pickford which starts out,  "Mary Pickford Used to eat roses Thinking they'd make her Beautiful,  and they did-  One supposes." Apparently Pickford did indeed use to eat roses to make herself look more beautiful.     Mary Pickford reveals in her autobiography, Sunshine and Shadow, that as a young girl living in Toronto she would buy a single rose and eat the petals, believing the beauty, color and perfume would somehow get inside her.   Pickford also gifted leading man John Gilberta bench for his garden.   It was Mary Pickford who said, "I do not cry easily when seeing a picture, but after seeing [Charles Chaplin's] A Woman of Paris: A Drama of Fate (1923) I was all choked up - I wanted to go out in the garden and have it out by myself. Our cook felt the same way." #OTD in 1805, Hugo von Mohl was born. The greatest "botanist of his day”, it said in one newspaper.   A German botanist, he was the first to propose that new cells are formed by cell division.  Mitosis was discovered by Hugo von Mohl.  And, he discovered chloroplasts - describing them as discrete bodies within the green plant cell in 1837.  In 1846 he described the sap in plant cells  as, “the living substance of the cell” and created the word “protoplasm”. Unearthed Words An April poem that puts all others in shadow;  is the lyrical "April" by William Watson. (Books By This Author)  England's onetime poet laureate, he began the poem with the unforgettably beautiful expression which, reminds us that April is the girlish daughter of springtime: "April, April, laugh your girlish laughter, then, the moment after, weep your girlish tears.”    April April, April, Laugh thy girlish laughter; Then,  the moment after, Weep thy girlish tears!   April,  that mine ears Like a lover greetest, If I tell thee, sweetest, All my hopes and fears,   April, April, Laugh thy golden laughter, But, the moment after, Weep thy golden tears!   Today's Book Recommendation  The Writer's Garden: How Gardens Inspired our Best-loved Authors by Jackie Bennett The book features 18 gardens and 20 writers; the author reveals how the gardens were tended and enjoyed. The book highlights the gardens of: Jane Austen at Godmersham and Chawton Rupert Brooke at Grantchester John Ruskin at Brantwood Agatha Christie at Greenway Beatrix Potter at Hill Top Roald Dahl at Gipsy House Charles Dickens at Gad's Hill Place Virginia Woolf at Monk's House Winston Churchill at Chartwell Laurence Sterne at Shandy Hall George Bernard Shaw at Shaw's Corner Ted Hughes at Lumb Bank Henry James followed by E.F. Benson at Lamb House John Clare at Helpston Thomas Hardy at Hardy's Cottage and Max Gate Robert Burns at Ellisland William Wordsworth at Cockermouth and Grasmere Walter Scott at Abbotsford Rudyard Kipling at Bateman's   Today's Garden Chore Make plans to add more berries to your garden this season.   Blueberries should be the top of your list - they’re beautiful in the shoulder seasons - Spring and Fall - plus - Blueberries! Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart Today, we learn about the true story of the "Waterloo Breeches."   John Claudius Loudon had written his friend, the Duke of Wellington, to inquire as to whether he might inspect the Waterloo Beeches. As a memorial of the battle of Waterloo, beech trees had been planted immediately after the battle of Waterloo.   Now, Loudon's note was kind of hard to read and the Duke misinterpreted a few things.    First, he THOUGHT that the note was from C.J. London(the Bishop of London) - not J.C.Loudon(the eminent landscape designer).   Second,  he misread "beeches" as "BREECHES".   Thus, he thought that the Bishop of London wanted to inspect his pants.   The Duke  wrote the Bishop back, saying: "My dear Bishop of London, It will always give me great pleasure to see you at Strathfieldsaye. Pray come there whenever it suits your convenience, whether I am at home or not. My servant will receive orders to show you so many pairs of breeches of mine as you wish ; but why you should wish to inspect those that I wore at the battle of Waterloo is quite beyond the comprehension of yours, most truly, Wellington." Now when this surprising not reached the Bishop of London, he showed it to the Archbishop of Canterbury and to other discreet persons. They thought the great Duke of Wellington had lost his mind. Eventually, the whole matter got straightened out. But from that day forward, the incident became known as the story of the "Waterloo Breeches".  And, we wouldn't have it - without John Claudius Loudon. Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

The point about curiosity is to be able to be okay with not knowing. If we cultivate the capacity for this -- and this comes from the listening -- we can actually be experiencing and appreciate our present moment reality, vs. the insistence on strategizing, fixing, etc. Then there is openness and even wonder and delight in our curiosity. -- Debora KolweyCuriosity can mean more than one thing?Curiosity can influence different states of being...free or stuck? What does it mean to listen?WHAT HAPPENS IN THE SPACE WE LEAVE WHEN WE STOP TALKING?Mmmm....this was such a heartfelt, thoughtful, and deeply rich conversation with our podcast mama, Debora Kolwey. ~The Simple Sophisticate, episode #205 ~Subscribe to The Simple Sophisticate: iTunes | Stitcher | iHeartRadio | YouTube "Today's accomplishments were yesterday's impossibilities." —Robert H. Schuller I was recently watching a documentary on Julia Child, and prior to meeting Paul, falling in love with French food and becoming the revolutionary figure she became in the food industry, there was a point in her life where she felt "ordinary", and not as special as she had assumed. It was shortly after the death of her mother to whom she was quite close and also during a time when a man she had been deeply interested in, married someone else. She returned to her parent's California home despondent and not sure of which way to go or with a clue of what to do with her life. Then World War II occurred and she chose to take part in any way she could. The rest is history in many ways, but this lull in her life provided a time of uncertainty about the future and a recognition that what lay ahead for her wasn't something she could predict or foresee. If you are someone who listens to their life, but also does all that you can to plan and put the odds in your favor, you, like me, have no doubt realized that there are still moments, some short in duration and some quite long, that seemingly give no clue how our lives will unfold. Such times are excruciatingly uncomfortable. Excruciating because we do not know if what we are doing is a lost investment or a wise investment. In such moments we begin to question whether we should have perhaps just "played it safe", not stretched so far, dreamed so vastly and swam so far from the shore. While I cannot sit here and write to each reader and confirm without a doubt that all of your dreams will come true, I can confirm that I am on such a ride right now and have been my entire life in many ways. But I have arrived on the other side of many of my worries in the past to see a beautiful reality that at some point along the way only seemed a dream, and in many cases, an impossible dream. Today I'd like to share with you eight things to either do or ways to shift your mind that will help you travel through these inevitable times that we will be introduced to along our journey should we be strong enough to walk away from the "safe" route. I put it in parenthesis because nothing is assured or 100% safe. In fact, when it comes to our mind, I have come to realize that we often have fear that our dreams won't manifest because we want them so badly. If we didn't, we wouldn't give them a second thought. In this instance, we are creating a sense of anxiety that we can actually let go of which leads me to my first point. 1.Make a plan and keep striving forward It's one thing to be worried your plan won't materialize if you haven't done the work. It is an entirely different scenario when you have done the work. Now this is not to say that there is a cookie-cutter approach and then voila! what you want will appear. But the key is to do what you can, keep steadily moving forward, each day, little by little tending to the necessary business and tasks and let go of the "when". 2. Seek meaning In Andrew Soloman's TedTalk regarding one's identity, he shares, "Forge meaning, build identity. Forge meaning, build identity. And then invite the world to share your joy." Another key to the success we seek, the goals we wish to attain is to strive toward something that is meaningful to you. Make sure you are seeking something that is of great value to you. If a particular political issue draws your ire as to how it is being handled, step forward in a manner you are comfortable with and work for the change you seek. As you begin to do so, you will be able to step into areas that you never thought you'd be comfortable going, but it will be your passion for the cause, if it is sincere, that will armor you from the most common doubts. Whatever you are working towards, so long as there is deeper purpose that is fundamental to how you live life or wish to live it, you will have infinite fuel to carry you along the journey. 3. Find the answers to the unknown questions While we may not be able to find all of the answers we seek, the primary reason we are fearful is because of the ambiguity. When we know, we can relax. And based on my mistake of not fully understanding the benefits of taking my business to the next level (LLC or an S-corp), I wasted years and much money because I didn't ask the questions from people who know the answers. When I finally did ask the questions from my now business lawyer, I could have kicked myself. My fears were assuaged because I had the answers, and the answers gave me back the power to make better decisions to determine my financial and personal future. 4. Reflect on your past As I look back over my past and consider the other uncertain times and what eventually unfolded, I am reminded that so many unknowns that I could not have predicted eventually revealed themselves. So long as I refused to stop striving forward, opportunities presented themselves. The key is to keep striving forward, putting forth your best and most sincere effort, being present and being excited about what you will find. Use your past as a confidence boost and apply the lessons you learned along the way. 5. Leave the familiar path Even if the crowd or others in your field have been successful doing something a particular way, it doesn't mean you have to travel in kind if that doesn't work or sit well or feel authentic to you. While it is always a good idea to look around to see what inspiration others can spark in you, as Oprah teaches, stay in your lane. Do it your way, do it well. I like to think of it as taking the time to learn the rules, but then breaking them as necessary as you move forward along your own journey. 6. A quick list to remember Don't fixate on the worst - instead envision what you are working to materialize. We create what we believe, and our energy is finite. Focus on what you desire, use your imagination to make it your reality, rather than envisioning what you do not what to have happen. What you look for, you are more likely to find. Don't become stuck in patterns that didn't work in the past - learn from what didn't work and do it differently moving forward. Perceived mistakes are not failures as they often reveal to us how we can do better next time with the next idea, or the next project. Don't see the unknown as a threat, rather see it as a mystery for you to solve. Become your own version of Hercules Poirot, Sherlock Holmes, or Nancy Drew, and be the detective who discovers how it can all work out. Don't throw your hands up and try anything, hoping something will stick. Be a savvy adventurer into the unknown.  Know the past, understand how history has unfolded (the causes and the effects), and then take educated risks. 7. Become more comfortable with a little messiness If every day each wheel of your machine called life was working smoothly, every email was answered in fewer than 24 hours, the house was always spick and span clean, every bill was paid in advance without a tinge of worry, and debts were paid in full each month even while we were investing, I would be dancing with glee the rest of my life. Some readers may be saying, but that is possible. Having seen what was going on in my life when such a vision was a reality, I can say only from my experience that I saw it as an opportunity to grow, to stretch, to see what else I was capable of, and so I took risks. I invested in my dreams. Now, as I advance in life, I do hope to become more settled, but the reason I kept stretching was because I knew there was more I wanted to experience, more ways in which I wanted to grow and more I wanted to explore. Because of these pulls and interests, I needed to take risks. And when that decision was made or being considered, my mind and my office (and inbox) were sometimes a mess. Not a mess to clean up, but a mess to work through, a mess that needed to materialize in order to strive toward a dream that I could not have made sense of at the time. But with time, each of us can see the beauty of what the mess can give us. We just have to stop thinking everything must be perfect all of the time. We need to allow our lives to be messy temporarily, sort through it, toss and keep what we should and then see the beauty that we were meant to find. 8. Become more comfortable with not knowing Julie Benezet, who in 1999 was working as a director of global real estate for an online company called Amazon as they sought advice on how to best survive and grow their business, in her book The Journey of Not Knowing shares, "I  noticed that when people take chances, they get farther ahead. Too often what happens is people go a more conservative route, because they don't want to deal with the uncomfortable feeling of trying something new when you don't know how it's going to turn out." The key to being willing to take these risks without knowing how they will work out is to become more comfortable with being uncomfortable. In this article she shares four approaches to further yourself in business when it comes to risk taking, and while you don't want to jump head-first without doing your homework, it is important to know that when you have already done the necessary work, you will still feel a bit of fear. Recognize this truth, become more comfortable with this truth, and it will set you free to soar. Whether it is the economy that we wish we could predict, the future of the government we live under, or whether or not our boss will say yes, or the weather will cooperate, the unknown is actually a norm in our lives. What lens we see this unknown through will determine how we navigate through the ambiguity, that while temporary, is inevitable. So take a deep breath, get out of your own way, follow the above eight ideas and enjoy the unique journey you are on. ~SIMILAR POSTS FROM THE ARCHIVES YOU MIGHT ENJOY: ~10 Things People Who Have Found Contentment Understand About Uncertainty, episode #100 ~13 Life Truths to Remember About Making Progress ~7 More Signs You Are Moving in the Right Direction ~Ask Shannon Episode is coming soon!
