Episode #253: This is the 4th installment of our interview with Jonathan Crowley, a dedicated vipassana meditator in the tradition of S. N. Goenka. In this episode, he speaks about the time he and his wife Carolyn spent in Myanmar, and how that affected his spiritual journey in general, and specifically his practice of meditation.Myanmar is particularly vulnerable to “Orientalism,” a term referring to the distorted, exotified views that Westerners have of Mideastern and Eastern cultures. Goenka's narrative paint both an overly romanticized view of the country, as well as encouraging a restrictive interpretation through the narrow lens of the lineage tradition and Goenka's “purity” narrative, which clashes with the vibrant, complex and rich reality that Jonathan and his wife encountered during their time in the country. As the dissonant experiences accumulate, Jonathan faces increasing angst about the organization's messaging and his own complicity in promulgating the tradition's mythology through a desire to belong and in his role as Assistant Teacher. Increasingly, he grapples with the belief that meditation alone cannot address deeply ingrained social conditioning, and that personal liberation and addressing societal issues are not mutually exclusive, finding himself more and more at odds with the organization's perspective.
Episode #225: In this third part of the ongoing discussion with Jonathan Crowley, we delve deeper into his experiences as an Assistant Teacher in the S.N. Goenka tradition of Vipassana meditation. Jonathan starts off by saying how he was moved by his appointment as an assistant teacher, but also candidly describes how aspiring teachers learn the importance of feigning disinterest, creating a false ego around the process.Jonathan then reflects on the weight of officially representing the organization, and how he grappled with the unspoken messaging behind its mission. He notes a paradoxical dynamic where Goenka shunned the title of guru publicly, while the culture within the organization promotes him as the unquestioned authority. As Jonathan delved deeper into his practice and examined the organization's modus operandi, he began to see the “trojan horse” nature of the ten-day course format. By this, he means that it attracts students with open-handed encouragement and says they their own masters, yet funnels them into increasingly narrower scopes as they commit to the organization.Despite deriving many transformative benefits from the practice, Jonathan started feeling the weight of the excessive faith expectations. He realized how storytelling and mythmaking play a crucial role in reinforcing this faith, and closing off avenues for questioning and critical thought.

I've been thinking a lot about aging and the end of life lately. Probably from working at the hospital. Being aware of my parents' stage of life reminds me of the inevitable reality that I'll lose them someday. My work has given me a front-row view of the aging process. As a coach and hospital social worker, I get to witness the emotions and family dynamics that arise as our loved ones age. Dominant culture tends to treat aging as something to avoid. The process of aging is often met with fear - for aging adults and their family members as well. We don't have a cultural narrative that embraces aging nor values our elders and the gifts they have to offer. We don't have systems or supports in place to care for our elders. It's still an unfortunate reality that if you don't have money in this country, your access to support services and quality care is limited. It's wild since we will all die someday. And we will all lose loved ones. While we continue to advocate for systemic changes, we can come together to support each other and share the responsibility for caring for our loved ones. This stage of life - like most transitions - is also an invitation to do our own inner work. Together, we can begin to shift the narrative to one that honors the aging process and treats our elders with the respect and care they deserve. I know for me and many of my clients, we're starting to cope with the realities of having aging parents or loved ones. We have questions about their intentions and plans for aging. We may have concerns about their mental capacity or their ability to care for themselves. We might feel anxious and unsure of how to navigate difficult conversations and a shift in family roles. For some perspective and wisdom on this topic, I invited Erin Chourey to join us. I hope you find our conversation reassuring, motivating, and empowering. About Erin: Erin Chourey (she/her) is an ICF (International Coaching Federation) Certified Life Coach, trained at the Life Purpose Institute, and is currently working toward her PCC (Professional Coach Certification) credential. Her current coaching specialty is Emotional Wellness and Alignment. Erin has worked in social services as a Residential Counselor, Group Home Manager, and Assistant Teacher for youth, a Case Manager for adults and teens with developmental disabilities, and for 10 years as a public and private Care Manager for aging adults. She then trained as a Life Coach and began her own practice coaching in 2017. In 2020, Erin began a part-time job with Lyra Health as a Mental Health Coach, where she supports employees of major organizations such as Meta (formerly Facebook), Google, Starbucks, Nike, Morgan Stanley, Providence Health, VCA, and many more, in on-line coaching sessions. Her clients range in age, identities, and levels of expertise and management in their fields, and live all over the US. This experience has expanded Erin's understanding of common mental health symptoms people are facing in their individual lives and how they relate to the collective challenges we are all facing together. Erin is passionate about guiding others to more clearly identify what is most important to them and to assess if they are living in alignment with their own values, or of the dominant cultural values, the values they were taught in their families, or a combination of all. Through this process, many find relief in discovering their own truth, which results in a clearer sense of intentional direction. This eases their suffering and empowers them to function with more joy and purpose. Outside of her role as a Coach, Erin is a lifelong learner, adventurer, spiritual seeker, community member, mother, wife, daughter, and generous friend, who loves collaboration, the forest, the ocean, the rivers, the mountains, the deserts, dancing, yoga, hiking, music, and art. Join me for an “out of this world” conversation with Julia Leihulu Contreras. Julia Leihulu Contreras is certified in Clinical Hypnotherapy, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Reconnective Healing and many other healing programs. She has a MA in Psychology from Saybrook University and Research Center, where she majored in Spirituality and Consciousness. During a meditation after moving to Hawaii in 2010, Thoth came to her and said “You are an Arcturian.” She did not know what that meant at the time. As she evolved into perceiving the Arcturian characteristics, she started channeling them in healings. She astral traveled with them and was shown around. The most poignant part of her connection with the Arcturians was to realize her calling here on this planet, as an Awakener, Healer, Teacher. The call through her Arcturian lineage grew stronger and she began to search for the highest knowledge to be able to channel their energy, healing and guidance. This led her to attend a 6 month- 300 hour training intensive Shamanic training. This awoke within her great spirit skill. She continues to take Master Classes to acquire Advanced Shamanic techniques and she is now a trainee to be Assistant Teacher in the program she trained with. She has made a vow of service to the Q'ero Shaman lineage and her practice is lively. She is now working a lot with illuminating people's spiritual path with soul retrievals, destiny and guidance.

Content Warnings5:39- 22:20 Child in peril (everything turns out okay)53:27-1:00:47 Serious harm and death On this week's episode, Jane and Dune dive into some truly heroic stories including the time an assistant teacher saved her student's life, the time a hotel manager was faced with a broken elevator when a basketball team in wheelchairs came to stay, and when a fast food employee stood up to one of the worst bosses of all time. We also hear about some crazy engagement photographer stories including when Dune was roped into being one on the spot, and some hilarious hijinks when a drive thru employee forgot to turn off their headset. This week we also have a more serious story at the end, so make sure you read our content warnings and timestamps that are always in the description of every episode. That being said, grab your wasp spray and firecrackers, because this is Once Upon A Work Day!
The Buddha's teachings of liberation were not meant only for prosperous and stable times, but also for when things are uncertain, or even perilous. Perhaps no moment in recent years has tested the mission of contemporary meditation centers and monasteries as much as this ongoing coronavirus pandemic, when just the basic act of gathering together poses a serious health risk. In this episode, we check in with three American-based monasteries and meditation centers with some connection to Burmese traditions, to hear how they have responded to these unprecedented times. Each speaker has years under their belt as a spiritual teacher, and they discuss how they worked to ensure that the Buddha's timeless teachings of liberation remain practical and relevant. They explain how their respective centers each found their own unique way to adapt to the pandemic and continue to serve its meditator community. We first check in with Sean Feit Oakes, an Editor and Community Dharma Leader at Spirit Rock Insight Meditation Center in Woodacre, California. Next up is Ayya Soma, an Italian monastic and co-founder of Empty Cloud Monastery in West Orange, New Jersey. Finally we speak with to Dick Delanoy, an Assistant Teacher at Dhamma Patapa, a vipassana center in Jesup, Georgia, in the tradition of S.N. Goenka. In this episode Professor Barry Carpenter interviews Beverley Cockbill, who has extensive experience of children with Complex Needs through her research and practice, especially in relation to the Engagement Model. Bev describes how engagement is key to effective teaching and learning for this group of pupils, and how it provides a lens through which the teacher can guide the child to positive learning outcomes. Part of Bev's role is working with disengaged, out of school pupils, and how she takes the principles expressed in the Recovery Curriculum to re-engage those children to reduce their stress and self-regulate their emotions. Using her wealth of experience in mental health she particularly articulates how Happiness Boxes (see fact sheet downloadable below) can be used in a versatile way in a variety of settings by families, as well as teachers, to support vulnerable young people. Bev picks out the Transparent Curriculum from the 5 Levers, for the opportunity it offers to co-construct the curriculum with the child and its family, as the child begins to reconnect with school and begin the process of recovery. Space, also one of the 5 Levers: she also sees as crucial to the child with Autism or behavioural difficulties, as they explore again their self-concept and emotional regulation in their learning setting. ‘Happiness Boxes' On the episode webpage and the Recovery Curriculum webpage, you can download a guide on how to make a Happiness Box, with a sound rationale for doing so. Written by Barry Carpenter and Bev Cockbill this step by step guide is perfect for welcoming children and young people back to school, or for home learning. In either contexts it enables the child to build their emotional resilience, and self regulate their emotional well being. ‘Social Stories' On the episode webpage and the Recovery Curriculum webpage is an example of some of the Social Stories that Bev refers to in this episode. Inquiring Minds article (referred to in this episode) On the episode webpage and the Recovery Curriculum webpage is a copy of the Inquiring Minds article that Bev refers to in this episode. About Beverley Cockbill Bev is a Complex Learning Needs Co-ordinator/Specialist Teacher for Chadsgrove School Support Services CCN (Communication Complex Needs) Team. School Support Services contributes to a school driven self-improvement model, which can lead to significant improvements in pupil outcomes. Bev is a Training Co-ordinator in complex learning needs. Previously, she worked for SSAT (The Schools Network) Ltd as Training Coordinator for complex learning needs and as a Research and Development Assistant on the Department for Education-funded (CLDD) Complex Learning Difficulties and Disabilities Research Project. In addition, Bev has been an Assistant Teacher and Structured Teaching Advisor/Trainer within a residential school offering 38/42-week education and 52-week care to children aged 6–19 years with severe and complex learning disabilities and autistic spectrum disorder. Bev lectures and delivers training for children and for adults with complex learning difficulties and disabilities in schools and care provision across the UK and internationally.
