From the gendered practice of straw craft—where women wove not just materials but stories across generations—to the radical educational approaches of forgotten art pioneers, this conversation uncovers how visual expression became a battleground for decolonization. Horace Wright traveled between islands as the Bahamas' only art educator during segregation, while Donald Russell created alternative spaces where Black and white students could learn together despite societal barriers. Their stories reflect the complex migratory patterns that define Caribbean identity itself: birth in one nation, heritage from another, and contributions to a third.Most provocatively, Oliver poses an existential question gaining urgency as climate change threatens island nations: "How do we preserve who Bahamians were outside the physicality of the Bahamas?" This challenge demands innovative approaches to cultural documentation that honor indigenous and African diasporic traditions while embracing new technologies and platforms. By framing arts education as a form of Black radical thought, this episode reveals how cultural expression functions as political resistance and nation-building. The conversation ultimately demonstrates that art doesn't merely reflect Caribbean identity—it actively creates it, serving as both anchor to our past and compass toward our future.Keisha Oliver is Bahamian assistant professor of Art and Design at the University of The Bahamas, and a PhD candidate in the dual-title Art Education and African American and Diaspora Studies program at the Pennsylvania State University. Ep.237 Amanda Coulson has worked for three decades as a scholar, critic, curator and cultural producer, having collaborated with artists and institutions, private and corporate colleagues, in the US, Europe, and various sites in the Caribbean. A dual-national (Bahamas/US), she grew up between London, Nassau, and New York, where she studied for her Master's Degree at the Institute of Fine Arts (NYU) and started her career at the Old Master dealers, Wildenstein & Sons, going on to work in various art galleries in London, Paris and Milan. Developing as a writer, Coulson spent 2 years as the international Editor of tema celeste, an Italian bi-lingual contemporary art magazine, before consolidating her critical practice writing for a variety of publications (Frieze, Modern Painters, ARTNews, among others) and providing critical texts for monographic gallery and museum shows. Coulson also worked as a freelance curator in Germany, organizing several exhibitions in Berlin, Frankfurt, Wiesbaden, Leipzig and Vienna (Austria), with special attention to Bahamian artists. Noting a lack of platforms for galleries representing emerging art, in 2005 she co-founded the VOLTA art fairs, which take place annually in New York and Basel, Switzerland. In 2011, she was invited home to The Bahamas to be Executive Director at the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB), where her focus was on increasing global awareness of the contemporary Caribbean art scene and on expanding the capacity and reach of the NAGB through a rigorous combination of capital works, collaborative projects and the building of strong inter-island, regional and international networks. She served on the Davidoff Art Initiative (now Caribbean Art Initiative) Board from 2012-2018, and on the Board of the Museums Association of the Caribbean (MAC) until she stepped down from the NAGB in 2021, after a decade at the helm. She is the founding partner at TERN, a new Nassau-based gallery operated by three Bahamian women whose aim is to support Bahamian and Caribbean artists in telling their own stories the global stage. In “Conch: Queen of the Florida Keys,” Gravy producer Adwoa Gyimah-Brempong takes listeners to the Keys, where queen conch is plastered across menus: conch fritters, conch salad, even conch chowder. The shells are a visual icon in Key West, even gracing its (semi-joking) flag as a sovereign nation: The Conch Republic. Which is fascinating… because conch hasn't been fished on the island in fifty years. So where is it coming from, where is it going, and why is the culture so enduring? Conch is beloved both culturally and culinarily across the Caribbean, and the cuisine made its way to the Keys with an influx of Bahamians in the 1800s. It became a symbol of the slow way of life on the island, which chef Martin Liz points out is 40 miles closer to Cuba than it is to the nearest Walmart. It's high in protein, easy to catch, versatile to prepare, and provides everything from building materials to precious pearls once harvested. But in the Florida Keys, conch was overfished to the point of near collapse in the 1970s and ‘80s. The reasons that it hasn't rebounded are being studied by scientists in Florida and elsewhere, because their numbers are falling throughout the waters where it makes its home. Due to a combination of overfishing, warming waters, and changing ocean pH, it's getting harder for conch to reach sexual maturity. And as density-dependent reproducers who grow and travel at a snail's pace, once populations are depleted they are very slow to return. That's a problem not just for kitchens, but for the ocean itself. As a bioengineer species that keeps seagrass beds vibrant and thriving, an ecosystem orbits around conch that spans from the tiniest algae all the way up to nurse sharks. It's crucial for carbon sequestration, and also employs thousands of fishers around the Caribbean. Different countries have approached this in a variety of ways: many have closed seasons. The Bahamas has completely closed exports, while Jamaica recently inaugurated the first conch fishery with Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification. Florida Fish and Wildlife researchers are experimenting with transporting immature conch further offshore, where they can bulk up the gastropod dating pool. And Florida Atlantic University's Queen Conch Lab, led by professor Megan Davis, is partnering with research institutions and fishers to protect conch for generations to come. In this episode, Gyimah-Brempong talks to Davis and her colleagues, as well as Gabriel Delgado, a researcher with Florida Fish and Wildlife, and Kristian Moree and Lachelle Russell, aquaculture technicians at Freeport mobile conch lab. She also interviews chefs who work with conch, including Martin Liz in Key West and Terry Eden Pratt in Grand Bahama. Michael Moxey, a Grand Bahama fisherman, tells of conch's accessibility and an evolving way of life. United around a love and need for these large-eyed snails, island nations are both strengthening their economies and increasing their protection from ever-stronger hurricanes. An affluent Cuban merchant and his young pregnant wife set sail from Havana in May 1734 on a peaceful voyage to Hispaniola aboard their private schooner, but a piratical mutiny at sea claimed many lives and set the vessel adrift. Aided by a passing Bahamian mariner, the Nuestra Señora de la Concepçion came to Charleston in distress and gained protection from local authorities. Interviews with the survivors sparked a formal trial that imposed British law on foreign visitors and delivered resolution to a grieving Hispanic widow and her newborn daughter.
