Of all of Jack Kirby's creations at DC, the Fourth World is probably the most well known, the most expansive, and the most ill used by other creators over the years. Some really get the wild cosmic and Shakespearean vibe the King of Comics was putting down. Some don't and just try to make the New Gods just any other team of super heroes. And because of the high cosmic of the Fourth World, Batman usually approaches these characters from a different angle; as opposed to Superman, he rarely goes to New Genesis or teams up with Orion. But sometimes, Batman does cross paths with the heroic gods of New Genesis and the dark gods of Apokolips. This week, we're looking at three of those stories. We have a Bob Haney joint from the 70s, Jim Starlin trying his cosmic hand at DC and the next stop on our look at Grant Morrison's DC opus Death by the Ounce (The Brave and the Bold V.1 # 128) Cosmic Odyssey # 1-4 Final Crisis (DC Universe # 0, Final Crisis # 1-7, Final Crisis: Superman Beyond # 1-2, Final Crisis Submit, Batman V.1 # 682-683) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Follow the show on Twitter @BatChatComics and support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

Big dreams start at Space Camp. The kids and family recipients from the Cosmic Odyssey scholarship program are joined by Inspiration4 astronaut Chris Sembroski in this creative conversation. Together, we discuss how our experiences can be put into the next Space Camp movie! From who's in mission control and on the rocket to where we're going to explore- we giggle through creating our own space exploration adventure based on our training at Space Camp! We feel our team would be qualified- we've got the Top Gun award-winning recipient aviator, 5 former Space Camp attendees (including two trainers, two Hall of Fame recipients, a former VP of Space Camp and one astronaut) and several of the most brave, strong and impressive cancer-surviving kids and their families. Your heart will soar listening to the Kent and Herbert family share their special memories of experiencing Space Camp together in this episode of Casual Space. Yes, we are but slaves to the new releases, which is why we are reviewing a fifteen-year-old game. "But that's impossible!" you reply, "No one was alive back then!" How is one person working to make space travel accessible to everyone? One scholarship at a time, according to Niko Blanks. “For me, sending pediatric cancer patients and their families to Space Camp is all about inspiring them to know that they can achieve their dreams no matter what hurdles they face.” Niko’s a senior spaceflight operations student looking to accomplish a big goal. And he’s just the person to make it happen- he’s already overcome big obstacles in his life at an early age. With his new, Cosmic Odyssey Scholarship, Niko is helping to send pediatric cancer patients and their families to Space Camp. You can help send these patients and their families, too- the application process for the summer of 2021 is open, and the fundraising for this scholarship just kicked off in a BIG way during Yuri’s Night! Space Camp, Space Kind, Space Flight Operations and space travel- it’s all right here in this conversation with the amazing and aspiring Niko Blanks. About the scholarship: https://www.hatcherfoundation.org/spacecamp About Yuri’s Night and where to donate! https://yurisnight.net/scholarship/ About Niko! Niko Blanks is from Chattanooga, TN and is currently a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University studying Spaceflight Operations. Niko has interned as a mechanical engineer on the NASA Sounding Rocket Operations Contract and has been a part of multiple NASA engineering design challenges for Artemis EVA operations. As the Crew Engineer of the Sensoria M3 Mission, Niko conducted human factors and EVA operations research at HI-SEAS in December 2020. Most recently, Niko is partnering with the Yuri's Night Foundation and the Austin Hatcher Foundation for Pediatric Cancer to start the Cosmic Odyssey Scholarship. Cosmic Odyssey is dedicated to inspiring pediatric cancer survivors by providing them with scholarships to attend SpaceCamp in Huntsville, Alabama. As a brain cancer survivor, Niko's ultimate goal is to make space travel accessible to everyone and one day set foot on the Moon and Mars himself. Follow Niko on Insta: @nikoinspace About the Austin Hatcher Foundation https://www.hatcherfoundation.org/spacecamp The Austin Hatcher Foundation is partnering with the Yuri's Night to help send pediatric cancer survivors to space camp! With the help of former Austin Hatcher Foundation patient, Niko Blanks, the foundation will be offering our patients and families the opportunity to apply for a scholarship for space camp! Niko Blanks was treated as a child at the Austin Hatcher Foundation for a Grade II Fibrillary Astrocytoma. Following his diagnosis and treatment, Niko decided he wanted to give back in any way he could to children experiencing the same trials he had to overcome. Niko now a student studying Spaceflight Operations and wants to educate those going through the difficulties that come with pediatric cancer on the thing that he feels truly changed his life. Multiversity Manga Club co-host and longtime friend of the pod Walter Richardson joins the boys for a discussion of Jim Starlin's "Death of the New Gods." The story, which somewhat touches on the events of both "Countdown" and "Final Crisis," while fitting in with neither, is a spiritual sequel to "Cosmic Odyssey," so there's plenty of "Odyssey" talk, too.

This episode originally aired January 28, 2015. This week’s episode swings the pendulum back in a more mainstream direction by taking aim at a Jim Starlin Big Two cosmic event book with an oddball collection of heroes and a Machiavellian manipulator at the center of things. Infinity Gauntlet? Nope! Cosmic Odyssey! To make things even better, Mike and Greg are joined on this journey into mystery by Multiversity Comics’ own DC expert Brian Salvatore! The lads leave few, if any, stones unturned in this look back at the Prestige Format miniseries from 1988. Come for the Starlin talk, stay for the Mignola discussion and tons of other interesting tidbits, like what are each of our #fourcomics picks, which artist showed Brian that superheroes didn’t have to fit a certain artistic mold, why Batman plays the whole “don’t use guns” and “don’t kill” things pretty fast and loose in this series, how his relationship with Superman should be handled, and who turns out to be the character most affected by this series. Robots From Tomorrow is a weekly comics podcast recorded deep beneath the Earth’s surface. You can subscribe to it via iTunes or through the RSS feed at RobotsFromTomorrow.com. Paul and Mike return with another installment of DCOCD, this time looking at the 4 part event from 1988, Cosmic Odyssey! The race to save the universe from Anti-Life was brought to us by the creative team of Jim Starlin, Mike Mignola, Carlos Garzon, Steve Oliff and John Workman! Get in touch and lets us know your thoughts on this ep and Cosmic Odyssey! You can send your comments to DCOCDcast@gmail.com , or on Twitter @DCOCDcast - and thanks for tuning in!
On this week’s bonus show: First, Andy Larson, Rob Stewart, and Chad Smith do a read pile review of Jim Starlin's mid 80s New Gods love fest called "Cosmic Odyssey". Then, the Ghost gang delivers another one of their patented Top Ten lists on the greatest character defining single stories in comic book history. Who was number 1? Listen to find out!
This episode originally posted on January 28, 2015. This week's episode swings the pendulum back in a more mainstream direction by taking aim at a Jim Starlin Big Two cosmic event book with an oddball collection of heroes and a Machiavellian manipulator at the center of things. "Infinity Gauntlet"? Nope! "Cosmic Odyssey"! To make things even better, Mike and Greg are joined on this journey into mystery by Multiversity Comics' own DC expert Brian Salvatore! The lads leave few, if any, stones unturned in this look back at the Prestige Format miniseries from 1988. Come for the Starlin talk, stay for the Mignola discussion and tons of other interesting tidbits, like what are each of our #fourcomics picks, which artist showed Brian that superheroes didn't have to fit a certain artistic mold, why Batman plays the whole "don't use guns" and "don't kill" things pretty fast and loose in this series, how his relationship with Superman should be handled, and who turns out to be the character most affected by this series. Nick and Face2Face host David Peck talk about his new film Having Our Baby, misconceptions about surrogacy, reproductive tourism, laws and technology, test tube babies, and celebrating life. More about the film here. Trailer IMDB Synopsis Having Our Baby: The Surrogacy Boom, follows Edmonton couple Sarah and Jason Geisler and surrogate Heather Chaput, and Montreal couple Phillipe Robert and Phillipe Malo and Woodstock, Ontario surrogate Eilise Marten, as they navigate the many challenges of surrogate parenting. The film traces the steps these couples go through to connect with a surrogate mother, from first meeting (“it was a little like online dating”, one confides) through pregnancy and birth. The film also travels to the UK to hear Britain’s first commercial surrogate mother relate the high-profile public controversy she endured, and to India, where the practice of Indian women acting as surrogates for First World couples has become a contentious political issue involving charges of colonialism, mistreatment and exploitation. Having Our Baby ranges far and wide getting expert opinion and insight on all aspects of surrogate parenting from specialists in the field including fertility counsellors and those operating fertility clinics, lawyers, medical ethicists, academics, psychologists, politicians, journalists, a group of Canadian surrogate mothers…and a vocal opponent of surrogacy.
