We made it. Another trip around the sun. Congratulations, everyone. Let's celebrate with our final episode of the year, The Stampies: Best Comics of 2024 (Part Two). In our final episode of 2024, we name the Best Comic of 2024 as well as several other cherished awards: Best Ongoing Series, Best Limited Series, Best Relaunch, Writer of the Year, Artist of the Year, etc. Maybe most significantly, we award the second annual Jesse Tappia II Champ Stamp Award, named after our good friend who no longer walks the Earth with us but certainly remains in our hearts as we cherish and promote this astonishing medium called comics. As in Part One, we asked journalists, podcasters, retailers, and creators to help us through the ceremony by selecting their favorite comics of 2024. You can just hit play and be surprised by who pops up, or take a quick scroll below and spoil yourself. Either way, make sure you follow them on their socials and partake in their good work. Also, thank them for joining in on our end-of-the-year shindig. It was super cool of them. 2024 was jammed with good books. Naming all the good ones in two episodes proved impossible. Watch this space because we'll publish the big list: The 50 Best Comics of 2025 at the very end of the year. Comics will mend your heart. That's the energy we're taking into the new year and the thought we carried as we assembled The Stampies, our end-of-the-year award show celebrating The Best Comics of 2024 - ahem - (Part One). Over the last six years, we've turned to comics to understand ourselves and the world around us better. They've guided us through tumultuous times, and we know we'll need them even more in the coming months and years. Our award show is very much OUR award show. We have peculiar tastes, and our favorite comics reflect that. Some categories stuck around from last year's ceremony, but with this episode in particular, you'll find several new ones, also. Next week's Part Two will be stacked with the more traditional Best Original Graphic Novel, Best Limited Series, Best Ongoing, etc. For The Best Comics of 2024 (Part One), we get a little more cutesy with Best New Superhero and Best Murder Mystery, plus categories like Best First Issue and Best Single Issue. As has become tradition, we've asked our friends in journalism and podcasting to name their favorite books of the year. New to our 2024 celebrations, however, we've also asked a few retailers and comic book creators to contribute their favorite books. If you want to be spoiled about who will be guest-starring in today's podcast, scroll below. Please thank them by following their work and social media handles (and letting them know how much you enjoyed their contributions to the podcast). 2024 was another banger of a year regarding comics. Highlighting our favorites was more challenging than ever. The Stampies contain sixteen categories, with a few extra surprise categories tossed in during next week's show. That's simply not enough space to name all "the best" books from the year. So, keep your eyes trained on the Comic Book Couples Counseling website. At the very end of the year, we'll unleash our massive 50 Best Comics of 2024 list. The Best Comics of 2023 (Part One) Category Timestamps: Best Comic Book Couple - 12:14 Best Murder Mystery - 18:18 Best New Superhero - 25:54 Best Adaptation - 32:29 Best Collaboration - 40:07 Best Short Story - 47:33 Best First Issue - 56:43 Best Single Issue - 1:05:05 The Best Comics of 2023 (Part One) Guest-Stars: Erik C. Jones (Bluesky): Manager at Four Color Fantasies. Tiffany Babb (Bluesky): Poet, Essayist, and Culture Critic. Dan Gvozden (Bluesky): Co-Host of The Amazing Spider-Talk Podcast Zack Quaintance (Bluesky): Comic Book Writer, Part-time Editor at The Beat Christian Ward (Bluesky): Batman: City of Madness, Spectregraph, Two-Face, etc. Chris Piers (Bluesky): Host of ComicTropes. The next book of this year's Eisner winners, we reviewed The Good Asian by Pornsak Pichetshote and Alexandre Tefenkgi. This book won for Best Limited Series, and it was well earned. We had high expectations due to the hype and this definitely lived up to it. Set in the 1930s, this is a crime noir murder mystery set around historically accurate events and places. While firing on all cylinders in the comic department we also found ourselves learning about early 19th century America that we were completely naïve to. Animal agriculture is one of the biggest contributors to global climate emissions. But what about hunting? Does shooting and eating wild game skirt the complicated ethics and emissions connected with eating factory farmed animals? In this episode, a vegetarian-turned-hunter brings two reporters into a forest in Germany, in search of sustainable meat. Not only is it an interesting conversation from a climate perspective, it's also a fascinating glimpse into the differences between hunting culture in the United States and Germany. This story comes from our friends at On The Green Fence, a podcast about environmental issues. It's produced by Deutsche Welle and hosted by Neil King and Gabriel Borrud. Shang-Chi! CM Punk! It's a double-topical episode! Shang-Chi is finally getting a movie and we admittedly knew absolutely nothing about him, so we went back to his beginnings in Special Marvel Edition #15 & #16 which was then renamed to Master of Kung Fu and the story continued with #17-19. But we didn't stop there! We also read Master of Kung Fu #126 written by the Best in the World himself, CM Punk. Then we continued our long-read of The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck with #2. So much content!!! Next Time: 2021 Eisner Award Winner for "Best Limited Series" - Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen #1-6 by Matt Fraction & Steve Lieber
This week: Part 1 of Discussion about 2021's Eisner Nominees, and covering new comics this week: "Karmen" #5, "Mamo" #1, "Ordinary Gods" #1, and "Wynd" #8. On this week's Comics Syllabus, we start with “Polybagged,” (video episode here) covering some new comics in shops this week (July 7, 2021), talking about: "Karmen" #5 by Guillem March (Image), “Mamo" #1 by Sas Milledge (Boom!), “Ordinary Gods” #1 by Kyle Higgins and Felipe Watanabe (Image), and “Wynd” #8 by James Tynion IV (Boom!) with mentions of other titles. [CORRECTION: In my review of “Ordinary Gods” #1, I mistakenly attributed the backup prose story at the end, “Flip of a Coin,” to the comic's writer, Kyle Higgins. In fact, the backup story was written by Jana Tropper. Apologies for the misattribution!] Then, we talk through about half the list of Eisner Nominations for 2021 (video episode here), including Best Continuing Series, Best Limited Series, Best New Series, Best Single Issue, Best Short Story, Best Writer, and Best Writer/Artist. The first round of Emmy voting began earlier this week, and we're starting to get the lay of the land. 'Game of Thrones' may well dominate the awards space in the drama category, despite less than stellar reviews for the final season. And this year, one of the most competitive categories, Best Limited Series, is a format that was on life support just a few years ago.
