On Today's Episode Mark brings back returning guest Chris Voss to talk Empathy and his new book. Tune in for more Chris Voss CEO, Founder, Instructor, and Keynote Speaker Chris used his many years of experience in international crises and high-stakes negotiations to develop a unique program that applies globally proven techniques to the business world. Prior to 2008, Chris was the lead international kidnapping negotiator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), as well as the FBI's hostage negotiation representative for the National Security Council's Hostage Working Group. During his career, he also represented the U.S. government as an expert in kidnapping at two international conferences sponsored by the G8. Before becoming the FBI's lead international kidnapping negotiator, Christopher served as the lead Crisis Negotiator for the New York City division of the FBI. Chris was a member of the New York City Joint Terrorist Task Force for 14 years. He was the case agent on TERRSTOP (Omar Abdel-Rahman/"The Blind Sheikh" case) and the TWA Flight 800 catastrophe. He also negotiated the surrender of the first hostage taker to give up in the Chase Manhattan Bank robbery. During Chris's 24-year tenure with the Bureau, he was trained in the art of negotiation by not only the FBI, but also Scotland Yard and Harvard Law School. He is also a recipient of the Attorney General's Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement and the FBI Agents Association Award for Distinguished and Exemplary Service. Chris has taught business negotiation in MBA programs as an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business, and at Georgetown University McDonough School of Business. Since 2009, Chris has also worked with Insite Security as their Managing Director of the Kidnapping Resolution Practice. Chris's New Book Empathy and Understanding In Business In the business times of yesteryear, many did not believe that empathy and understanding mixed well with sound business decisions. However, with the more recent breed of entrepreneurs, many have increasingly recognized that successful and long-lasting relationships depend on using both empathy and understanding to build a solid foundation. The master of negotiation and Celebrity Expert(R) in this book, Chris Voss, reminds us that entrepreneurs want lasting relationships that build trust and clientele. He questions if anyone associates empathy with enterprise and entrepreneurism, and states that the qualities of trust and lasting relationships come out of understanding and respect for each other. In short, as stated by Brené Brown, "Empathy fuels connection." To learn more about negotiation and how the Celebrity Experts(R) herein have improved their negotiating skills, it would be beneficial to read about their accomplishments. They have honed their skills and can be great mentors. They will tell you what worked for them and what did not - saving you time, energy and cost of 'reinventing the wheel' - the path to success - in negotiating.

You wouldn't be much of a sports fan if you didn't have a bucket list of events you want to see in person before you, well, kick the bucket, as it were. While plenty of people talk about such a list, few of us write it down, and even fewer of us set out to actually accomplish it. And that makes David Carter unique. Carter is a national authority on sports business and strategic marketing, and the author of four books about the sport business industry. He founded the Sports Business Group in 1999 following more than 10 years of consulting for the sports and entertainment industries, and he's an adjunct professor of management and organization at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business with an emphasis on sports. But perhaps of even greater interest, Carter has set out with his best friend to tackle their own bucket list of sports events — 25 events before they turn 75 years old. Carter is serious about the endeavor as well. He's put his list to a spreadsheet, with ground rules about what events he'd like to see and where. No country can be visited twice. No sport should be watched twice. These are just some of the ground rules. But the effort also comes with considerable planning and more than a few lessons about why you should put some thought into planning your own list should you try to tackle it. In this conversation, SportsTravel Executive Editor and Publisher Jason Gewirtz talks with Carter about what he's learned some nine events into his own list of 25 events and what observations he has about today's hottest issues and trends in sports events.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome to PART 2 of Life Like Jake where we continue from last weeks' interview. Our guest is Jake Thomas, a self professed “ex” and recovered junkie, drunkard,  super-consumer of everything and everyone that would take him away from reality. Now he is the founder of LIFE LIKE JAKE and is coaching people via his elite mindset training program.  This week Jake walks us through his coaching mindset. The pillars and foundation he believes are needed to obtain a healthy and sustainable life.  We cover the basics of life:  air, water, food and sleep. We touch on how the kings of ancient wisdom are known for following some basic principles that are eternally effective: long walks, fasting and introspection. Jake is a firm believer in the power of the subconscious mind, principle over pleasure and a life of discipline via subtraction. And how can we not go down the rabbit hole of diet!!?  He shares his experience as a vegan competitive bodybuilder versus switching to Carnivore based living. Listen to his success story and how he describes becoming the mentor for himself that he never had. Jake is coaching others to be the best they can be, helping people climb their own mountain of struggles with his guidance to the top! More about Jake Thomas: Originally from New Orleans, Jake Thomas served in the United States Marine Corp from 2003-2007. After he left the military, he did a 5 year stint working as a bartender. From there his career took a few different paths, including working as a Drilling Fluids Engineer for an oil company to Marketing Director of a furniture company in Mexico.  He then attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City, graduating Summa Cum Laude, Salutatorian with a Bachelor of Science in International Trade & Marketing. He has a Master of Business for Veterans (MBV) from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. He also holds multiple state Real Estate Licenses.  Jake has competed in bodybuilding and physique competitions and in true badass Marine form, has run a 3:30  marathon “dry”, without any fluids or food.  In 2017 he founded LIFE LIKE JAKE, an elite mindset training program that puts candidates through a rigorous unplugging to rewire their thought processes and understandings of the world as they see it, and of life itself.  Find Jake Here: Website: LIFE LIKE JAKE Socials: Instagram      YouTube      LinkedIN Our Advice! A junkie, a drunkard, a super-consumer of everything and everyone that would take him away from reality. That is how our guest Jake Thomas describes himself. Now he is the founder of LIFE LIKE JAKE and is coaching people via his elite mindset training program.  Jake's journey through some tough and dark times is what I like to call the “rise and then fall of a United States Marine.”  Jake shares his experience from  a top rated US Marine to his downward spiral after leaving the structure and familiarity of the military. Faced with trying to figure out his life path that didn't fit typical family and social norms, he loses himself in alcohol and drugs.  He shares his struggles finding his path and how he overcame bad habits and scaled his own mountain to success.  Now he is giving back what he has learned, helping others through his coaching program LIFE LIKE JAKE.  His story of hardship and struggle was so important to share in full context that we made this a full episode but next week will be Part 2 where we really get into the nitty gritty of his coaching program and methods. Stay tuned and come back next week! More about Jake Thomas: Originally from New Orleans, Jake Thomas served in the United States Marine Corp from 2003-2007. Certainly not most academics, and probably not the business students they teach. The common perception around HR is that its focus is getting everyone their benefits and making sure sexual harassment trainings are completed. But there is so much more to this field. Dr. John Boudreau is a professor emeritus of management and organization and a senior research scientist with the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. With his research on the bridge between work human capital development, leadership, and sustainable competitive advantage, Dr. Boudreau's interests are in the future of work and organization. His latest books on HR include “Work without Jobs: How to Reboot Your Organization's Work Operating System (Management on the Cutting Edge)” and Reinventing Jobs: a 4 step Approach for Applying Automation to Work.He joins Greg to talk about how “work” is not synonymous with a “job,” trust when it comes to change, dealing with inevitable automation, and iphone upgrades as a metaphor for the changing workplace.Episode Quotes:The evolution of tasks & jobsCan I give you a bonus for being a bus boy and coming over here and helping out with the wait staff? You know, and how long is it that you do that before you say, you know what? I'm getting paid at the bus boy, but 30% of my time I'm over here helping out highly paid waiters and waitresses. You know, if you're not, don't I get to get paid in the tips? and so - oh, wait a minute. Do we have a system that can pay you that way? Can we give you credit for the skills that you're using over there? So what is the evolution? So, basically that is kind of, this is not a dig on HR. These systems exist for everybody and they exist for a reason, but they require rethinking. Trust in changing workplacesIf we're going to be in a relationship like a worker and their leaders, or a worker in their company, there needs to be some trust that the other party isn't out to get you. Or that the other party hasn't left aside your considerations in the interest of their own.Building community in new work environmentsI think COVID has helped us to understand that there are new ways to build community. That said, it's also helped us understand that that traditional system was so embedded, that those alternative ways of being remote or being fluid are difficult. Much more difficult than just taking a job.Show Links:Guest Profile:Professional Profile at University of Southern CaliforniaProfessional Profile at USC Annenberg Center for Third Space ThinkingSpeaker Profile at Big SpeakJohn Bourdreau's WebsiteJohn Boudreau on LinkedInJohn Boudreau on TwitterHis Work:Beyond HR: The New Science of Human CapitalRetooling HR: Using Proven Business Tools to Make Better Decisions About TalentLead the Work: Navigating a World Beyond EmploymentReinventing Jobs: A 4-Step Approach for Applying Automation to WorkWork without Jobs: How to Reboot Your Organization's Work Operating System

In this episode we talk with Davide Proserpio, an Assistant Professor of Marketing at University of Southern California Marshall School of Business.  David studies problems related to digital markets and has spent years analyzing the sharing economy.   It all started with a research paper showing a positive correlation between Airbnb and housing rent and prices: a paper that was used by plenty of anti-STR groups. But the data does not stop there... Davide followed-up with a recent Harvard Business Review article, which found that restricting STRs in a neighborhood can reduce residential development.  We wanted to get him on the show to explain the article, and dig into how academics and community groups can be a resource for data that cities accept as unbiased.   Data maybe our most powerful tool for a reasonable approach to regulation and people like Davide represent a powerful, unbiased and accessible way of getting and communicating that data. Rick is a Trustee of the University of the Aftermarket Foundation and a member of the Auto Care Association Board of Directors. He is a recipient of the prestigious Northwood University Automotive Aftermarket Management Education Award. Prior to starting Schwartz Advisors, Rick held various senior level positions at Nestle, Macy's and The Upper Deck Company. Rick received an MBA from the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business and a BA in International Relations from USC. Key Talking Points What is going on in overall M&A – not just the aftermarket- Many of the investment bankers are reporting record deal flow. A few key factors driving the abundance of M&A deals- catch up to deals that were put on hold in 2020. Excess “dry powder” (cash)- financial buyers (private equity firms & family offices) had an abundance of capital ready to deploy last year. Potential tax changes- the change in political administrations in the U.S. has caused concern among business owners that the capital gains tax will increase substantially upon exit. Low-interest rates- easier for buyers to finance acquisitions  The aftermarket has slow steady growth- making it appealing to private equity  Business owner- opportunity to cash out and next owner could do a lot to recruit, market, and grow.   Why are some family-owned businesses selling? Timing – it is time to exit, (not related to the economy), competition, diversify personal investments and net worth, concern about changes in the tax code How long will the current M&A activity keep up? Looks like M&A activity will remain very active through the end of this year and into early 2022, perhaps longer. Big changes in tax laws could slow down M&A, but will Congress pass big changes? What is driving M&A in the service sector, from a buyer's perspective? What are buyers looking for? Growth beyond simple organic growth (i.e., growth beyond same-store sales growth). Acquire businesses before competitors. Buy distribution.  No matter who is selling what preparation is necessary? Even if you are not thinking about selling, be prepared: Documentation in order: 3 years financials, 5 years is better, copies of all contracts/leases. Have your estate plan in order. Hire advisors who can help- hire a lawyer who knows how to do M&A – might not be your regular business lawyer (and don't bring in a lawyer who might be experienced in other areas but not M&A). An Introduction to the Fasting Mimicking Diet: A conversation with James Kelley, MD, and Deepa Verma, MD

Natural Medicine Journal Podcast

Research has uncovered many benefits of fasting. In this episode, 2 medical experts describe the different types of fasting, the physiology of fasting, the research associated with a special type of fast, and the clinical applications of the fasting mimicking diet. Listeners will learn how to enhance the efficacy and sustainability of their fasting protocols. About the Experts James Kelley, MD, MBA, is the medical science liaison of L-Nutra. His background is in the development of early-stage medical and biotechnology, in addition to working with and educating physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals. Kelley completed his M.D. at The Ohio State University, and was the inaugural research fellow at the Ohio Health Research and Innovation Institute. He finished his MBA at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. He has worked with the USC Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering, the Lloyd Grief Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, and the Stevens Institute of Technology. He holds a bachelor's degree in cell biology from the University of Virginia and completed his neuroscience masters coursework at Miami University. Prior to joining the L-Nutra team, he was the head of Inventor Services at The Innovation Institute, a partnership with the Cleveland Clinic Innovations group focused on developing and commercializing new and innovative healthcare solutions. Deepa Verma MD, AIHM, is a double board-certified physician in family and integrative medicine. She is a graduate of Rutgers Medical School (formerly Robert Wood Johnson) and a faculty speaker for health organizations such as The American Academy of Anti-Aging Medicine (A4M), Cutera, and Age Management Medicine Group (AMMG), just to name a few. In 2013, she founded a healing-oriented practice, Synergistiq Integrative Health, after experiencing some personal challenges and feeling unfulfilled treating patients traditionally. She believes that challenges are presented not as obstacles, but as stepping stones. In addition to working in private practice, Verma is a blogger and TV personality, having made appearances on NBC, ABC, PBS, and Lifetime TV. She is a regular guest on Bay News 9. Verma's passion for healthy living resonates in everything she does personally and professionally. She understands the angst and frustrations that patients feel when they are sick and tired of feeling tired and sick. To learn more about her integrative/anti-aging practice and expertise, visit drdeepaverma.com and synergistiqhealth.com. About the Sponsor As research grows in this area of health, prolonged fasting is becoming more widely accepted as a legitimate means of managing weight and aid in the management of risk for metabolic diseases. At the same time, it is clear that fasting can be challenging and uncomfortable, and therefore, it is important that it is done in proper and healthy ways. As fasting trends, such as intermittent fasting, gain popularity, the extended fasting periods (without food) can lead to a myriad of negative side effects, including irritability and the likelihood of overeating during the “eating” period. While most people think of fasting in terms of the common definition of fasting, which is the abstinence of food or drink, cellular fasting is linked to downregulation of the nutrient-sensing pathways and upregulation of stress resistance mechanisms. Nutrient sensing pathways are sensors that are activated in the presence of adequate nutrients (amino acids, glucose, energy). ProLon has been scientifically developed to avoid triggering the three key Nutrient Sensing Pathways namely: PKA (Carbohydrate Pathway), IGF-1 (Protein Pathway), and mTOR (Amino Acids Pathway). Culminating more than 20 years of research and discoveries on fasting made at the University of Southern California (USC), L-Nutra is a nutrition technology company using breakthrough science to enhance human health, promote healthy aging, and support overall well-being. As industry pioneers and innovators of fasting nutrition science, L-Nutra is the creator of Fast Bar and the ProLon Fasting Mimicking Diet. Fast Bar and the foods included during ProLon's 5-day program are the first and only fasting products that are scientifically researched and crafted with macro- and micronutrients in precise quantities and combinations that nourish you but mimic the effects of fasting to unleash the body's natural ability to fuel and rejuvenate itself. A clinical trial found that ProLon FMD provides benefits not limited to weight loss, healthy aging, and metabolic health. With ProLon, the health benefits are typically sustained well after the 5-day program, with users reporting fewer cravings, enhanced focus and energy, and greater mindfulness of food choices. *Disclaimer or further explanation is always required for this claim. The disclaimer needed: “Benefits seen in a randomized, controlled study in 105 adults after a 15-hour overnight fast comparing the glucose and ketone results every hour for 4 hours in the Fast Bar group, breakfast group, and water-fast group. Various forms of fasting have become one of the favored strategies for dieting in recent years. One approach, prolonged fasting, has numerous benefits when it comes to dieting and aging well that differentiates it from other methods. Dr. James Kelley joins me to discuss whether prolonged fasting is right for you.   Benefits of prolonged fasting include: Neuroplasticity Lower parasympathetic tone Improved heart rate variability Reduced insulin intolerance Increased cellular health Lower blood pressure   About Dr. James Kelley James completed his M.D. at The Ohio State University and was the inaugural Research Fellow at the Ohio Health Research and Innovation Institute. Prior to joining the L-Nutra team, he was the head of Inventor Services at The Innovation Institute, a partnership with the Cleveland Clinic Innovations group focused on developing and commercializing new and innovative healthcare solutions.   What Prolonged Fasting is and How it Can Help Prolonged fasting involves going without food for at least a day or two. This leads the body to shift how it processes food and leads to metabolic changes. It usually takes at least a day for the body to reach ketosis, making prolonged fasting an effective way to manage weight. It also supports autophagy, your body's method of cleaning out damaged cells so that healthier ones can be regenerated. There are risks to prolonged fasting, however. Dr. Kelley emphasizes the importance of working with a knowledgeable practitioner to make sure that your body makes the right adjustments without doing harm to important systems and organs.   Why Prolonged Fasting Doesn't Need to Be Hard Fasting is not an easy thing to do. Many people don't make it much more than a day. To help people achieve the benefits of a prolonged fast while still allowing them to eat, Dr. Kelley's company has developed ProLon. This five-day plant-based meal program has been scientifically researched and designed to help keep your cells in a state of fasting while providing your body with essential sustenance and nutrition.  When the effects of prolonged fasting are achieved, clinical trials have shown numerous specific benefits. Dr. Kelley describes how participants often lose visceral fat, maintain healthy levels of IGF1 which helps with better aging, and achieve an overall better metabolic balance. For over ten years, the USC Formula SAE club has welcomed all students interested in engineering, computer science , motorsports, and in general, automotive enthusiasts, regardless of past experiences. The fifty-member team is housed in the Rapp Engineering Building, and is enthusiastic about inviting new members with a willingness to get hands-on and dirty with automotive engineering. In this episode, Eric, Max, and Vihan, discuss balancing their membership in FSAE with academic and personal interests, leadership dynamics within the club, and staying on-schedule when engineering their competition car. Today I sit down with James Kelley, MD, MBA, Consulting Medical Science Liaison of Pronlon. Excited to hear your thoughts!  “The main health benefits of the Fasting Mimicking Diet are due to the metabolic and cellular effects of the diet. While most diets focus on weight loss, the Fasting Mimicking Diet not only induces weight loss but also maintains healthy levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar and other important health markers. Due to these effects, the Fasting Mimicking Diet was granted the first patent in history on promoting tissue/organ regeneration, Longevity and Healthspan July 10th, 2018. The FMD holds multiple patents discovered and clinically tested by the laboratory of Valter Longo and Keck Hospital at the University of Southern California (USC). These patents are exclusively licensed to L-Nutra and include indications such as cancer, auto-immune diseases, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. USC and multiple research centers around the world are currently researching the impact of the FMD on these diseases.” James brings both clinical and business experience to L-Nutra. His background is in the development of early stage medical and biotechnology, in addition to working with physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals. James completed his M.D. at The Ohio State University, and was the inaugural Research Fellow at the Ohio Health Research and Innovation Institute. He finished his MBA at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business. He has worked with the USC Alfred Mann Institute for Biomedical Engineering, the Lloyd Grief Center for Entrepreneurial Studies, and the Stevens Institute of Technology. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Cell Biology from the University of Virginia, and completed his Neuroscience Masters coursework at Miami University. Prior to joining the L-Nutra team, he was the head of Inventor Services at The Innovation Institute, a partnership with the Cleveland Clinic Innovations group focused on developing and commercializing new and innovative healthcare solutions. ProLon launched in the United States on September 21, 2016, and quickly expanded into 12 international countries. Today, ProLon has globally impacted the lives of 80,000 consumers in the United States and Europe. L-Nutra will be expanding into Canada, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Middle East, Japan and China. The company is on track to be one of the fastest growing nutri-technology companies with breakthrough scientific research and a rich pipeline of fasting mimicking diets. ProLon has helped over 80,000 individuals to improve their wellbeing. More than 5,500 healthcare providers have recommended ProLon to their patients. “Our goal is to scientifically uncover all the health benefits of fasting and make them available to billions of individuals,” says Dr. Antoun. “We are aiming at enhancing human longevity by many years, and we believe it is within in our reach,” continued Dr. Antoun. As part of the commitment of the company to help improve the health of others, ProLon inventor, Dr. Valter Longo, generously donates all profits from his 60% share in L-Nutra to the Create Cures Foundation, whose mission is to help fund ways to prevent illness and promote longer, healthier lives.
