#122 ¿Zoom o Fijos?

My guest for this show is none other than my buddy Dave Williams, making his third appearance on the show. On the chance that you haven't seen the other two shows I did with Dave, "Aurora and the Night Sky" and "The Traveling Photographer", let me take a moment to introduce one of my favorite creatives. Dave is a travel photographer based out of London, or wherever his tricked out van happens to be parked. Yeah, you heard that correctly. Dave lives in a van called "Kofifernweh", and this van is insane - you can read about it here. He documents his travels, while photographing and writing, on his popular YouTube series "Due North", and his Aurora images from these adventures are amazing - which isn't a surprise considering he literally wrote The Complete Aurora Guide: for Travelers and Photographers. There's no question about it, Dave is one of the most adventurous people I know. Dave's work has been featured in publications and campaigns for clients including Time, National Geographic, Forbes, Boeing, Huawei, Microsoft, Triumph, Conde Nast, and Shell to name a few. He also works closely with several companies within the photography and travel industries, including Platypod, Wandrd, Litra, Drobo, Blackrapid, Passion Passport, and Lonely Planet. What has always stuck out in my mind was Dave's ability to teach others, and you can find his tutorials and writings in various places, and I have the links below, but many will know him the same way I did, his work over at KelbyOne, along with his writings for Photoshop User Magazine and ScottKelby.com. He also writes journalistic and inspirational articles for DIY Photography. He's also presented at Photoshop World Conference, The Photography Show, Russell Browns Art Directors Invitational Masterclass. Recently, I was talking to Dave and he mentioned he was doing a new workshop with another past guest and friend, Kersten Luts, who was on the show for the episode on Creative Portraits and Headshots. He calls this workshop the "Lofoten Islands Viking Photography Workshop", but it's a lot more than that. It's a portrait and landscape hybrid photography workshop deep within the Arctic Circle. There will be a Viking, epic landscapes, rugged mountains, majestic fjords, beautiful reindeer, world-renowned food, traditional red cabins, dancing aurora, and Dave and Kersten as your photo guides. I have to admit, I REALLY want to do this workshop, and I even have had other friends of mine tell me they've already signed up. Not sure I can swing it, since I already have a big vacation planned this year, but yeah, I am looking at it. Dave and Kersten were kind enough to share a discount code for you, so you can take 5% ($250) off when booking with DAVE5. The mantra Dave lives by is ‘once in a lifetime as often as you can' and so far, that's working out pretty well Join renowned travel photographer Dave Williams and me as we chat about photographing deep within the arctic circle, and his workshop in Lofoten, Norway, on this Behind the Shot. If you've been watching the show for a while then you may have seen the "Aurora and the Night Sky" episode with Dave Williams. Dave is a travel photographer, based out of London, and one of the most adventurous people I know. More on that in a minute. I met Dave by chance a few years ago at Photoshop World. I was interviewing people in a hallway when I asked two people walking by if I could ask them some questions (they kindly said yes). What I didn't realize at the time is that it was Dave Williams and Sian Elizabeth. Before this chance meeting I was aware of Dave Williams, due to his work with KelbyOne, but I really didn't know it was him when I asked for that interview, until noticed his instructor badge. Since that time I have gotten to know Dave a bit better, and have even had the pleasure of hanging out with him at a Platypod dinner. He is one of the most knowledgable guys in the business, and yet one of the most humble. Dave's mantra is, ‘lend me your eyes and I'll show you what I see'.  I like that saying, and it sums up his work well. Dave's images take you places, and make you feel like you're there, and that work has been featured in publications and campaigns for clients including Time, National Geographic, Forbes, Boeing, Huawei, Microsoft, Triumph, Conde Nast, and Shell to name a few. He also works closely with several companies within the photography and travel industries, including Platypod, Wandrd, Litra, Drobo, Blackrapid, Passion Passport, and Lonely Planet. You can find Dave's tutorials and writings in various places, and I have the links below, but many will know him the same way I did, his classes at KelbyOne, along with his writings for Photoshop User Magazine and ScottKelby.com, and through Photoshop World. He also writes writes journalistic and inspirational articles for DIY Photography. Since that last episode, Dave's life has changed a bit. He now lives in a van he calls "Kofifernweh", and this is not a 'normal' van. Seriously, this thing is insane - you can read about it here, and take a tour of it here. While living in this van, Dave is traveling, and photographing, and writing, and doing a cool new series called Due North. Due North is a series documenting his winter mission to hit as many Nordic countries as possible. You get to follow along with Dave as he drives through some of the most photographic landscapes in the world. You can catch the show over on his YouTube channel. I'm so glad Dave has found the time to come back on the show, and for this episode we will be talking about his image of the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct. This location, and the old trains that travel it, has been seen in four Harry Potter movies, The Crown, and in many other shows and movies. Join traveling photographer Dave Williams and me as we chat about his life in a van, and as we discuss his image of the iconic Glenfinnan Viaduct, on this episode of Behind the Shot. Bence táskát vett a szebbik felének. Vallási kérdések a MILC-ek világában a Sony vs. Fujifilm. Antenna elmondja miért döntött a Fujifilm X100T mellett. A kontrasztok inspirációja a fotózásban.

In this episode of the DREAM. THINK. DO. podcast, Mitch Matthews talks with Ron Henry, founder of the premier brand and multi-million dollar company BlackRapid. Ron spent over 10 years as a photographer before he took the risk and invented and patented an entirely new type of camera strap. He launched BlackRapid and it has now become known for its great products and for a culture that cultivates growth, creativity, and innovation. Listen To The Podcast: There's a reasonable risk is scary… It's because there's no guarantee how things will turn out.   My next guest on DREAM THINK DO, Ron Henry, is familiar with risk. After 10 years as a successful wedding photographer in the Seattle-area, he decided he wanted more out of life.  So he started to pursue an idea and he invented and patented a new camera strap. Less than 10 years later, that one idea has grown into the multi-million dollar company BlackRapid, which is now known as the world's premier brand for camera straps. The risk clearly paid off. In our conversation, Ron talks about those early years of what pushed him to take that leap when he already had a successful career.   Plus, we dig into the importance of starting right where you are.  And… we discuss how he started small and kept pushing forward. That part of the conversation is TOTALLY worth it… but wait there's more! A bonus aspect of this interview is when we start to talk about creating a business culture that works.    Ron obviously values people and he's taken specific steps to cultivate an environment that inspires innovation, loyalty and full engagement - both internally and externally.   Listen to this episode for inspiration as Ron talks about the importance of timing in achieving big dreams and being able to create a life you love.   In this episode, you will… Be inspired to start on your dream regardless of where you are Learn why taking the risk to pursue your dream is worth it Gain insight into how what you think either creates or limits your success Learn how to create a workplace culture that people love   Episode Resources BlackRapid MitchMatthews.com/129 DREAM. As the “good girl” among the group of castaways on a tiny island, she was often positioned against the glamorous and exotic Ginger Grant, played by Tina Louise, prompting many to ask: Are you a Ginger or a Mary Ann?Part self-help, part memoir, and part humor—with a little classic TV nostalgia for good measure—What Would Mary Ann Do? contains twelve chapters on everything from how Mary Ann would respond to changes in today’s culture to addressing issues confronting single women and mothers. Anecdotal sidebars also describe fascinating facts and compelling memories from the show, as well as some trivia questions to challenge fans and followers. Illustrated with photographs from Wells’s private collection, this book provides inspiring lessons from TV’s favorite good girl.

Blackrapid's founder Ron Henry faced a hard truth late 2013 when he was diagnosed with Cancer.  This is about his journey through the process from start to finish. He kept it private for almost a year and this is the first time he has gone public. This is Part 1 which takes us from diagnosis to post surgery.   Notes from Ron: "In the mirror of the hospital's waiting room.. I see an old lady sitting in a wheel chair, her daughter waits with her. I see the sadness of the caregiving daughter who has taken her mothers sickly energy and begins to look similar in body posture and frumpiness of not caring anymore. Her life was to keep her mother alive.  It was pretty much silent as they sat together with no conversation except for when the daughter wanted to go to the rest room and leave her for a minute. She told her three times I will be back you'll be ok. Then she left and was back as if she hurried her break not to be gone long. Her mother sat silent when she returned as if she really never knew her daughter left.  I see myself in the mirror with dated floral furniture and a 20 year old photo of Seattle as if this was to keep my spirits high and my mind off of this why i was there -  I can smell the dying mother from the far corner of the room where I stood. I was hoping soon she would be wheeled away to see the doctor so I can take a normal breath again. This is not me in the mirror I manifest cool things and great adventures. I have no more holes in my belt to cinch it any tighter. This is a day to be in the sun that shines through the dirty 18th floor window with its grand view of the city. I have my dog that brings me happiness staying with a friend in Bellevue so I can talk about how to beat this thing. I feel this is not me- this is not my story. When i finally wrap my head around this - It will not be the end - it will be a chapter and short chapter at best."

WE ARE BACK and what a trip we had. First we made our way to Poland where we stayed in Warsaw followed by Krakow before flying to Germany for Photokina 2014. Poland was a personal trip where we toured the Warsaw Ghettos and got educated on so many different aspects of WWII. We also used the time in Warsaw to do a hands on with the Nikon D810. There were so many people and street performers out that it made for great street photography. As another part to the personal journey we went and toured Auschwitz which was a profound experience. My goal was not to take pictures but the few images I did capture really told a very somber story.  Next up was Krakow for the evening where the TINDER scene was off the hook. I have never seen so many good looking girls as I swiped right and rarely left. And for the record I did not meet any of them thank you very much. We did run into one pretty scary issue on our way to Germany. Our flight from Krakow to Germany was CANCELED at the last min leaving us stranded for 8 hours in Krakow. But it also lead to one of the most stressful and funny stories of the entire trip. Hear that story at 41:11 to laugh your ass off. Photokina 2014 – Photokina happens ever two years and this year we were able to make the trip thanks to BlackRapid. Without BlackRapid being the sponsor we probably would not have been able to bring you the coverage that we were able to. My goal with the show was to bring you one solid piece of content opposed to chopping it up into 20 videos. Our show recap can be seen below in one consumable video, enjoy.
