JJ Elliott is an advertising copywriter with a degree in English from UCLA. She lost her mother to suicide as a teenager and spent over two years volunteering on the suicide hotlines in LA. One of the reasons she wanted to write this book is because she finds herself increasingly frustrated by the way suicide is treated in print and on-screen, as a mystery to be solved rather than a multi-layered, complex mental health situation that can rarely be boiled down to one specific "reason."A native of Northern California, JJ now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her husband, two teenage kids, and two poorly trained bulldogs. She loves to read, drink wine, play tennis, and eat cheese. There Are No Rules For This is her first novel. In this episode, Nada sits down with JJ to discuss her newly published book. After ten years of crafting the story, JJ decided not to go with a traditional publisher and shares why that was an important decision in telling this very personal story. Page One, produced and hosted by author Holly Lynn Payne, celebrates the craft that goes into writing the first sentence, first paragraph and first page of your favorite books. The first page is often the most rewritten page of any book because it has to work so hard to do so much—hook the reader. We interview master storytellers on the struggles and stories behind the first page of their books.About the guest author:Boasting one of pop's most beloved voices, Susanna Hoffs grew up in L.A. with an ever-present soundtrack of '60s music. She loved to sing and play guitar, going on to study the arts in college. Stirred by punk and new wave, Susanna started her first band with David Roback while at UC, Berkeley. Upon returning to L.A., she placed a want ad which led her to Vicki and Debbi Peterson. In December 1980, they met in the garage of Susanna's parents' home and a band was born. Blending '60s garage rock, lush harmonies, and jangly guitars, the Bangles became a seminal band of the '80s with a string of hits from three platinum-selling albums. Over the decades since, the Bangles continued to tour and release LPs. In 1991, Susanna issued a pop-heavy solo album, When You're a Boy. Five years later, her eponymous LP brought her closer to her musical roots than she'd been in a long time which was met with critical praise. After working together in the Austin Powers films, Susanna and Matthew Sweet formed Sid 'n Susie, releasing three volumes of their acclaimed Under the Covers series. In 2011, she stole away to the studio for Someday, a retro modern solo set that served as a stylish homage to the '60s pop that she grew up on. She followed that up in short order with two EPs. More recently, Susanna has collaborated with the Zombies, Tom Petty, Chris Martin, Mike Campbell, Jack Antonoff, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, Aimee Mann, Andrew Bird, Jon Brion, Maya Rudolph, and others. Her debut novel, This Bird Has Flown, is published by Little Brown, a division of the Hachette Book Group. She's a graduate from UC Berkeley with a degree in art and lives in Los Angeles with her husband of three decades and has two sons. You can find her at www.susannahoffs.com and follow her on Instagram @susannahoffs.About the host:Holly Lynn Payne is an award-winning novelist and writing coach, and the former CEO and founder of Booxby, a startup built to help authors succeed. She is an internationally published author of four historical fiction novels. Her debut, The Virgin's Knot, was a Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers book. She recently finished her first YA crossover novel inspired by her nephew with Down syndrome. She lives in Marin County with her daughter and enjoys mountain biking, surfing and hiking with her dog. So I thought to ask your favorite master storytellers how they do their magic to hook YOU. After the first few episodes, it occurred to me that maybe someone listening might be curious how their first page sits with an audience, so I'm opening up Page One to any writer who wants to submit the first page of a book they're currently writing. If your page is chosen, you'll be invited onto the show to read it and get live feedback from one of Page One's master storytellers. Our guest today, Bob Wheatley, knows this better than anyone and after two and a half years of hard work and dedication is set to release his first book Our Hearts' Desire: How Our Stories Reveal the Thing We Want Most. In our conversation with Bob, we discuss how he first realized that he wanted to write a book and the key lesson he learned from the process. He provides a detailed breakdown of the publishing routes that aspiring authors can choose to pursue, the financial implications, and why he chose to use the hybrid publishing model. He also expands on how the skills he learned as a professional athlete helped him pitch up every day, and how to embrace the fact that your first draft won't be very good. Writing a book takes a tremendous amount of commitment, and while it requires many hours of working in solitude, the only way you'll deliver the best product possible is by enlisting the help of trusted friends, family, and mentors. Danielle and I had a deep conversation about her husband who is a thrill-seeker. We spoke about her mental and emotional feelings about her husband who does extremely dangerous things and a risk taker. Danielle Kaplan is a speech-language pathologist and movement specialist. She grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa and holds a master's degree in Speech Pathology. She and her husband Steve emigrated to Canada, where she spent twenty years working in acute teaching hospitals, in Neurology, Neurosurgery, and spinal injury. Danielle gained a certification in Pilates and then went on to train further in movement while achieving her Personal Training certification (CanfitPro), Ballet Barre for fitness training and then received her Rehab Exercise Specialization Certification. The mother of two, she lives with her husband Steve and their two fur babies in Toronto, Ontario. I Married A Thrill-Seeker is her first book. When Danielle Kaplan's husband Steve decides to take one last road trip on his BMW R1200GS Enduro, from Toronto, Ontario to near Fairbanks, Alaska, his life changes in an instant. The treacherous stretch of road between Carmacks and Watson Lake in the Yukon called the Campbell Highway was incredibly dangerous in the rain. Steve hit a pothole and crashed-and what follows is a true testament of luck, love, and incredible fortitude as his injuries leave him with a less than one percent survival rate. In this honest, open memoir Danielle Kaplan explores the toll Steve's trip took on her family, his accident and her husband's incredibly long recovery took on her family. As a former speech pathologist, Danielle becomes her husband's greatest ally-fighting by his side the entire time, through every step forward and step back, as Steve regains his health after the tragic accident. From the moment Steve leaves the driveway until the night of the fateful call, Danielle has mixed feelings about the trip. And from the months they spend in the hospital to her husband's eventual recovery, she reveals her truthful, mixed emotions about everything from the life saving measures used to keep him alive to the unbearable decisions she had to make about their family. This heartfelt, raw story contains the essence of the human spirit, and is filled with both determination and love. ABOUT RE:BOOKS: re:books is a broad commercial independent publishing house based in Toronto, founded by Canadian bestselling author Rebecca Eckler. Plenty of authors leave their manuscript buried in folders, but Susan decided to chop her 90,000 word manuscript into two parts, and publish it as a series. Susan's journey is fun and whimsical as she mix and matches elements for her stories, and finds her own writing path. Getting that first novel done and dusted gave her a boost of confidence to keep going, keep writing, and always keep learning. ABOUT SUSAN LASPE: A visit to England inspired a story that would fuse Roman mythology, magic, and a medieval hero. Susan's years of inventing stories, writing 'silly poetry', and and reading challenges came to her rescue. Today, she thrives in sewing and knitting projects, drawing or watching movies. JV Hilliard is a debut novelist and published his first book, The Last Keeper in December 2021.Like many, the global lockdown meant his work went online. He didn't have to commute and  suddenly had a lot more time on his hands. This was the opportunity he needed to write the book that had been brewing for the last two decades.Joe has loved epic fantasy ever since a substitute teacher, Mr McKinley, read The Hobbit in class. He took that passion and turned to tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, and that's where his imagination really took hold and he practiced world building - worlds he uses in his fiction.JV says he's a one hundred percent planner. He doesn't do anything unless it's worked out ahead of time. He knew his characters before he started writing, and he knew where he wanted them to end up. From there he reverse engineered the series, outlining each chapter before writing it.Part of Joe's day job is to write policy documents. This gave him the advantage of already being able to write every day. His writing muscle was well developed. What was harder was switching from non-fiction to fiction, in particular writing prose and dialogue. To help him with this, JV Hilliard enrolled in a writing class at a local workshop. This give his manuscript the opportunity to be workshopped - something I really recommend - and improved. For much of Joe's professional life, he has been an entrepreneur, and that has been crucial in giving him the business principles needed as a published author. As well as enjoying the creative side of the business, Joe recognises he's a ‘start up business'. He has one book to his name and understands this may be a ‘loss leader' until he's written the series in full and found his fan base.Once he's up and running, JV Hilliard knows he'll see the return on his investment in himself and his books.JV Hilliard tells me about Books 1 and 2 his World of Warminster series, and his serendipitous journey to publication.Given Joe's obvious enthusiasm for his work, his open demeanour and willingness to learn, it's no wonder his books have attracted the attention of his editor and publisher and it's clear to me JV Hilliard and his World of Warminster series have a very bright future.Connect with J.V. I thought: ‘I will solve this problem. I'll write a book for non-technical business leaders so they can answer those two questions'.”  Neil had never written a book before, but Own the A.I. Revolution: Unlock Your Artificial Intelligence Strategy to Disrupt Your Competition was picked up by McGraw Hill and became a bestseller!   Neil is a professor at UC Irvine, IBM Master Inventor, and advisor to the United Nations on artificial intelligence. He joins Published Author Podcast host Josh Steimle to discuss writing and promoting his first book.  Top Takeaway: Have a Detailed Outline  As a first-time entrepreneur-author, Neil has many takeaways, but the essential learning is that having a detailed outline is a must.   “An outline makes the writing process so much easier,” says Neil, adding that his co-author Michael Ashley really helped him structure the book and frame the story.  “I had lots of knowledge, lots of examples of things I had done, but they were just scattershot; they didn't make sense to anybody else,” he continues. “So we spent a good five or six hours in a couple of sessions, just throwing everything out there.”     “We built a very detailed outline. It took about six weeks to build a detailed outline, it was about 54 pages long.”  Leverage Your Network  Neil reached out to thought leaders in his network for interviews to build the content for the book. This idea soon evolved into something bigger when Neil and Michael received incredibly rich contributions from big names in AI, including Peter Diamandis, Steven Kotler, Stephen Ibaraki, and Ben Goertzel. These interviews make up a full section of the book.  The two authors also interviewed people across a range of industries, as well as smaller entrepreneurs, ensuring that the book was both comprehensive and deep.  Consider Working With a Co-Author  As a first-time author, Neil knew nothing about writing or publishing. He sought out co-author Michael, who has written more than ten books.  “It was an experience that if I tried to do on my own, it probably would have fallen flat. I didn't realize how incredibly difficult it was right to write a book and how even more difficult is to get published,” says Neil. “I have a new appreciation for authors because it is a grind. It's a worthwhile grind. But it's still a grind!”  Despite the grind, Neil adds: “The experience of writing the book was way better than I ever would have imagined. I was happy to get the book and just hoped to help people. But given the kind of feedback . . . As a first time author, I was totally stoked!  Neil's collaboration with Michael has been extremely successful and they are planning two more books. Their next one is on disruptive thinking, while book number three will be on art and technology.  Neil's other key takeaways as a first-time author are:  Keep a firm focus on your audience and don't forget you are writing for them, not you A book needs to make sense to an audience and resonate with readers Even if you work with a traditional publisher, as an author you're still responsible for promoting and marketing your book Don't get too attached to your title; if your book is published by a traditional publisher the title may change Going with a traditional publisher means that they buy the book, own it, and can do whatever they want with it.  Neil also discusses what it means when a publisher has an option on an author's next book, how he promoted Own the A.I. Revolution: Unlock Your Artificial Intelligence Strategy to Disrupt Your Competition, and how he was able to expand sales beyond the original target niche.  Links   Twitter  Instagram  LinkedIn  NeilSahota.com  SUBSCRIBE TO PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST  If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe. This weeks episode is with the INCREDIBLE writer, comedian and newly published FIRST TIME AUTHOR of 'Cheer The F**k Up'...Jack ROOKE. Grief has been a recurring and relentless theme in Jack's life, having lost his father to cancer at the tender age of 15, and then a best friend to suicide at the age of 21. Both these tragic deaths had a huge impact on Jack's direction in life and career trajectory, co-writing a show about his fathers death with his 85 year old nan, Good Grief, and then, Happy Hour, a comedic tribute to his friend lost to suicide. Both shows received high acclaim at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, after which he went on to present his own BBC Three documentary series, Happy Man, the BBC Radio 4 comedy, Good Grief, and was also BBC Radio 1’s on-air expert in bereavement and mental health for The Surgery. Jack’s shows were such a success they transferred on to London’s Soho Theatre, Latitude Festival and The Roundhouse., and then in 2019 he was asked to contribute an essay to the award-winning book 'It’s Not OK to Feel Blue (& Other Lies)', curated by Scarlett Curtis. Finally, and very excitingly, his debut publication, Cheer the F**K Up is just starting it’s book tour, and is out to buy! Jack has that amazing ability to lighten and make silliness of subject matters which are usually laden with weight and taboo, whilst managing to create a healthy channel for his own grief to express itself. His wisdom and understanding of the world is well beyond his 26 years, and thank goodness there are people like him making conversations which are so often avoided, accessible and brilliantly funny to anyone and everyone who comes across his work. Welcome back to the Instant Impact Podcast with your host, Elyse Archer. Today’s episode is a pretty special one. Elyse is chatting with her sister, Sarah. She’s done what a lot of us aspire to do--write a book. Not only that, but Sarah was picked up by a major publisher and landed a six-figure advance.    Elyse and Sarah discuss how to get started writing a book, how to find a publisher and agent, what the entire process looks like, how to make money with a book, as well as how to navigate the ups and downs that come with writing a book. From the outside, it can look like a cinderella story, but there was a lot of hardship and rejection.    Sarah lets us know the importance of starting slow when approaching a book. You don’t have to dive in the deep end at first. Writing a book one step at a time will result in a well put together story with a cohesive idea and story. Most of the hours spent writing aren’t generating words--it’s organizing and laying out your thoughts.    Regardless of your professional space or genre, this conversation promises to bring value to you and open your eyes to the prospect of writing a book.   LINKS Saraharcherwrites.com
