Shaping Sustainable Places – Development and Construction of a Low-Carbon Built Environment
Is it realistic to believe that the construction sites of the future will be completely fossil fuel free? In this episode, we examine the benefits of electrifying construction sites and the challenges of achieving zero-emissions in construction sites. We visit the first fossil fuel free construction site in Sweden, Slakthusområdet i Stockholm and explore the differences between driving an excavator powered by diesel and an excavator powered by electricity. James Bailey, Executive Vice President for Skanska's West Coast region, USA talks about the experiences and challenges of working with electrical machines in the major transit project, Los Angeles Metro's Purple D Line Extension Project. Dr Ray Gallant, Volvo CE Vice President Sustainability and Productivity Services, USA explains what the challenges are for sites of the future to be completely fossil-free. Volvo CE is the manufacturer with one of the world's largest ranges of electric machines for the construction industry, with the goal of making fossil-free machinery more accessible.
When toughness and resilience are often equated with success, it's not easy to open up and be honest about what we're struggling with. The construction industry is demanding and high stress, which makes it a breeding ground for mental health challenges that all too often get swept under the rug. Today we are talking about our experience with mental health struggles and how we manage it in our work. Hamish especially has a history of battling anxiety, including a difficult time earlier this year.Identifying Triggers: Hamish shares the things that trigger his anxiety to get worse, like money stress or juggling too many projects at once. These stressors can send him into a spiral of negative thought patterns that will get worse and worse if not addressed. He shares what he does when he notices things are getting bad. His number one tip is to have an open conversation about how you're feeling. This can be with a mental health professional, but it could also be with your mates! The Power of Acceptance: Through the episode, we touch on some of the pivotal moments in Hamish's life, including his decision to seek professional help and the realisation that managing mental health is an ongoing process rather than a one-time fix. Accepting these struggles as something he needs to manage has made it easier to keep them in check. It gave him permission to prioritise self-care and attend therapy regularly.Busting Stigmas: In “blokey” industries like construction, mental health has often been ignored or even mocked. People were often told to suck it up or act like a man and weren't given the support they needed. Thankfully, things are improving; and while there's still a long way to go there is a lot more support these days. Each of us can contribute to building a better environment for mental health by being honest about our own experiences. Mental health awareness is so important, and it's one of the main reasons we started this podcast. We hope this episode will encourage you to pay more attention to your mental well-being and reach out for help if you need it.Until next time take care and remember, true strength comes from being vulnerable!LINKS:Connect with Us: Sanctum Homes: www.yoursanctum.com.au/Carland Constructions: www.carlandconstructions.com/

Amid a skills shortage, there's concern more needs to be done to increase the number of women working in construction. As of mid last year, 2.6% of building roles and 8% of trade and technical roles within infrastructure sectors are held by women. Coming down the pipe-line, women were awarded 15% of construction and infrastructure apprenticeships. A recent survey showed 60% of women spoken to expressed an interest in entering the trades, while 79% of trade employers said they'd like to hire more women But, advocates say, barriers remain connecting willing women workers with employers, and that women need to be made to feel welcome in a male-dominated workplace. Erica Cumming,Acting General Manager of Partnerships and Equity at Waihanga Ara Rau, the workforce development council, supporting women in trades, construction and infrastructure.

#018: How to Choose a Building Site. There are many things that you must consider before purchasing a lot to build a new house on. Does zoning allow for what you want to build, what about utilities and access? How does topography play into the equation? What are some other things that you need to be aware of before you make the purchase. Involving your architect early in the process and completing a feasibility study will help you make a better decision and avoid getting stuck with a lot that doesn't work for your needs or how you want to live.Visit n3architecture.com for more informationIntro and Some Cut Music by: Purple Planet Music

#Construction is a general term meaning the art and science to form objects, systems, or organizations,[1] and comes from Latin constructio (from com- "together" and struere "to pile up") and Old French construction.[2] To construct is the verb: the act of building, and the noun is construction: how something is built, the nature of its structure. #buildingsite In its most widely used context, construction covers the processes involved in delivering buildings, infrastructure and industrial facilities, and associated activities through to the end of their life. It typically starts with planning, financing, and design, and continues until the asset is built and ready for use; construction also covers repairs and maintenance work, any works to expand, extend and improve the asset, and its eventual demolition, dismantling or decommissioning. weki As an industry sector, construction accounts for more than 10% of global GDP (6-9% in developed countries) and employs around 7% of the global workforce - over 273m people. The output of the global construction industry was worth an estimated $10.8 trillion in 2017. weki On-site construction Once contractors and other relevant professionals have been appointed and designs are sufficiently advanced, work may commence on the project site. Typically, a construction site will include a secure perimeter to restrict unauthorised access, site access control points, office and welfare accommodation for personnel from the main contractor and other firms involved in the project team, and storage areas for materials, machinery and equipment. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/vegansteven/message

This is another older recording that I thought I'd post. The building site was quite noisy, but the main percussive sound drew me into listening and then recording.
