I've known Rob for several decades now; we met in Korea when he was MD for global liquor distributor Maxxium, and I was doing cocktail seminars there for bartenders. We've had personal and professional intersections  - not to mention more than a few martinis here and there - ever since, as he racked up a truly stellar resume in the liquor biz: Diageo, Shaw-Ross, Maxxium, Gruppo Montenegro (where he was also MD), and Disaronno, where he's currently CEO. But, as he's a former Stoli CEO, I thought I'd have him on this week, as Stoli USA filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy just last week, which came as a bit of a shock to one and all. So sit down - like me and Rob did - with a nice large vodka martini to hand, and listen to us dive into the Stoli saga, the current state of play in liquor, the role of private equity, what Rob thinks of what's in the trade news these days, and why he'll absolutely hire someone without a college degree...Rob on X/Twitter: https://x.com/rbc1964?s=11&t=kTsTPMPK0kgHLvK8ldrFXQ Rob on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robert-cullins-1419346?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_mweb&utm_campaign=share_via&utm_content=profile Get in touch with Duff!Podcast business enquiries: consulting@liquidsolutions.org (PR friends: we're only interested in having your client on if they can talk for a couple of hours about OTHER things than their prepared speaking points or their new thing, whatever that is, for a few hours. Abbiamo investito molto in questo progetto, dando vita a dei format che potessero davvero rappresentare i nostri brand nella loro anima, e le nostre aspettative, già alte, sono state ampiamente superate. While Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola's “The Godfather” continue to enjoy critical acclaim more than 50 years after its release, the same can't be said for its namesake cocktail. But just because the disco-era mix of Amaretto and Scotch was traditionally cloying and unbalanced, doesn't mean it isn't worthy of a 21st-century upgrade. Joining us to teach us how to do so is John Ware, bar director of New York City's Forsythia. Leave the gun, take the cannoli, and listen on (or read below) to discover the Forsythia Godfather recipe — and don't forget to like, review and subscribe! John Ware's Forsythia Godfather Recipe Ingredients - 1 ¼ ounces blended scotch, such as Speyburn - ¼ ounce smoky whisky, such as Puni Alba Malt - ⅔ ounce amaretto, such as Disaronno or Luxardo Amaretto di Saschira - ¼ ounce Ostinato Secco Dry Marsala - ½ teaspoon honey syrup (2:1) - 1 teaspoon Reisetbauer Hazelnut eau de vie - 4 drops of saline solution (5:1) Directions 1. Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass with ice. 2. Stir until cold and strain into a chilled rocks glass with a large rock of ice. 3. Garnish with a brioche pastry (filled with Chantilly pastry creme, topped with powdered sugar) and Cantucci (almond biscotti) on the side plate. Hosted on Acast. There's been a groundswell of new Irish whiskey brands in recent years, which we explored in late 2022 in a special episode supported by the Irish Whiskey Association.Royal Oak Distillery predates many of the newcomers. It was founded in 2012 by the late Augusto Reina of Illva Saronno, the Italian company that owns renowned liqueur brands Disaronno and Tia Maria.Located on an 18th century estate in Ireland's Ancient East barley growing region, Royal Oak is home of The Busker Irish Whiskey, which has recently arrived in Australia. In this episode, global brand ambassador Woody Kane will share with you the back story behind the distillery, and some of its signature production attributes that define The Busker. For starters, there's the importance of local grains, and the fact that Royal Oak produces all three Irish whiskey expressions – malt, grain and pot still – under the same roof. And then there's the marsala casks that are a fixture in its barrel store, thanks to parent company Illva's ownership of Sicilian winery Cantine Florio. That's all coming up in this special episode of Drinks Adventures, produced in partnership with The Busker Irish Whiskey.Click here to open episode in your podcast player.

Born and raised in Boston, MA of Greek immigrant parents, and an alumna of Boston Latin School, and Boston College, Effie Panagopoulos is the first Greek woman in history to found a liquor brand.  With a BA in French/Romance Languages, Effie had lofty aspirations of being a UN ambassador, and much to the chagrin of her traditional Greek mother, ended up in the spirits business.  She has over 15 years experience marketing and selling spirits brands in the US from street to executive level, for some of the most well-known brands. (Chambord, Bacardi, Grey Goose, Bombay Sapphire, Metaxa, Disaronno).  She finally became an “ambassador” when courted by Remy Cointreau to be the first (and only to date) National Brand Ambassador for iconic global Greek spirit brand, METAXA. It was this role that brought her back to Greece and re-ignited her love affair with the motherland.  Her “eureka moment” was in 2008, at infamous Mykonos beach bar Nammos, coincidentally written about in VOGUE.com where she decided SHE would be the one to bring this product to the US, and has not only created Greece's first luxury spirit brand, but has eyes set on being the “new” on having a bottle of KLEOS on every bar.  To seek Aristotelean balance and personify her Spartan roots, she is a fitness enthusiast, certified personal trainer, former spinning instructor, and natural bodybuilder.  She can be found deadlifting cases of KLEOS in the summertime, doing bicep curls with bottles of KLEOS, on the Greek islands, while writing bits for her next stand up comedy routine in between sets. She is passionate about mentoring the next generation of female entrepreneurs and supporting women's charitable organizations.Follow Effie Panagopoulos on social media @greekspiritmuse

Episode 57 features Disaronno Originale, an Amaretto. The bottle for the tasting is 750mL at 28% ABV, or 56 proof and sells for about $30. Enjoy this episode with Disaronno neat, on the rocks, or in a favorite cocktail! Disaronno's official website: https://www.disaronno.com/en (https://www.disaronno.com/en) Brief Historical Timeline: 1525 - Bernardino Luini is commissioned to paint a fresco in Saronno, Italy, and his muse, a local innkeeper, gifts him a bottle of bitter almond liqueur she made as thanks 1600s - Italians routinely make homemade liqueurs from local ingredients, and the innkeeper's recipe may have been rediscovered by Giovanni Reina 1900 - Domenico Reina begins commercially producing what we know today as Disaronno in Saronno, Italy. Sold as "Amaretto di Saronno" 1942 - A squared bottle is used 1947 - ILLVA, the parent company of Disaronno is formed, entirely owned by the Reina family 1960s - Disaronno is exported to the USA and finds a receptive market 1971 - The bespoke bottle is created by glass artisans in Murano, Italy 2001 - The name is officially changed to "Disaronno Originale", relegating amaretto to the back label 2009 - A label update is made Key Cocktails: Disaronno is great on it's own or on ice, but mixes well. I'd recommend trying this recipe: Disaronno Sour: 50 ml Disaronno 25 ml Fresh Lemon Juice 5 ml Simple Syrup Egg White Shake all ingredients with ice vigorously. Strain into an ice filled glass, garnish with a lemon wedge and serve. TIME 5:05 “We *slurrrrrr*…” “Did you eat all the ice cubes out?” TIME 5:10 As you can tell by my inability to talk without slurring and recall what was actually in the cocktail, I was indeed smashed. That combo is something I will play with in the future - but for now - let's meet my friend Danny the pilot…. TIME 5:45 “Check check, can you make more money if you turn the GAIN up?” Danny Blaha. TIME 5:52 Danny and I drink together a lot, so naturally when he visited last weekend I had to make him this strange cocktail… also he brought a knife? No, that was just a butter knife. TIME 6:00 Levi: What do you think of this cocktail? Danny, put down that knife. Danny: The pain makes me know that life is real. Um, that's a good way to start? Levi: yeah, it lets people know you have nothing to say at all. What do you think of this cocktail? Danny: When you decided that you wanted to make it, I was a little concerned when you took Disaronno, cold brew coffee and orange juice out of your refrigerator. Um, it scared me a little bit. Levi: I didn't have Disaronno in my refrigerator, but yes I understand your fear. Danny: Yeah. *Indistinguishable grunt* Like I said three flavors you just don't think would go together. But I do think it tastes like one of those orange chocolate balls that you have to hit on a table and it splits into pieces. Maybe that was only cool in the 1990's but there you go. It tastes good and it goes together, orange and chocolate it good. Levi: orange and chocolate are amazing together. Orange and coffee are okay together but certainly most places don't put those together. This is cold brew of course. I think Disaronno goes really well with coffee. I've made a similar cocktail with Disaronno, Almond syrup, espresso, shaken with milk and ice. Danny: you make a lot of cocktails that are really bitter, that's kind of your go to. I like this one because its NOT bitter. You put a lot of bitters into cocktails, its very common for you, but this doesn't have that. I like your cocktails that are higher in citrus. Levi: Joey my coworker teases me because for like 6 months I put lime into everything I made. Danny: Do you cook it for 6 months? Because when you cook…. you definitely take your time. Levi: you make it sound like I cook completely stoned, but really I just like to take a few days. Danny: is it done cooking? Oh is it charcoal black now? Mmmm tasty. Levi: get out of my house…. Time to try the Cafe Boulevardier. Which was actually the very first cocktail we built that day. When I am tasting I start with the more bitter and move to the sweeter. It's hard for me to go from sweet to bitter, do you ever do tastings like this? TIME 8:40 Cafe Boulevardier… Levi: our first try, Kurt, wanna say what we got? Kurt: We have ourselves the Negroni, Boulevardier, BREW-vardier? I don't think that's too bitter. Levi: I'm not sure the coffee-note is the right note for this. Sweet enough. What is tough is all I taste is garlic from my lunch. Kurt: I like the ending note, its all coffee. Levi: We did 1 oz of sweet vermouth, 1 oz of Campari, 1 oz of bourbon, and then just a 1/4 oz of a cold brew super concentrate. Yeah right now this aftertaste is really great, should we do an orange zest or any herbal element like mint? Kurt: I don't think so, I think its done. Levi: recipe #1 is done, its in the banks! Kurt & Levi *CLAP* TIME 13:30 Cafe Cola Cynar “big mistake” Kurt: so its Cynar, cold brew,a nd Coke Levi: the big mistake we had made? Kurt: was adding white rum, then dark rum, all bad. Levi: the big lesson here is to start simple, then layer in more flavors on top. Kurt: yeah. So the recipe is 0.5 oz Cynar, 4 oz Coca-Cola, 0.25 oz cold brew. Levi: on the nose its a lot of coffee, the Cynar and the Coke are balanced together. The cold brew again is the lingering aftertaste. BAM. TIME 14:30 As I taste a drink I pay attention to the BIG categories in flavor: sweet/sour/bitter/umami/salt, then also very important is the “Exact-flavor.” There is ‘good' verses ‘meeting the standard of identity.' This Cafe Cola is such a simple recipe and I already knew about the idea of a “Cynar Cola,” its actually on the bottle of Cynar, so I used that recipe idea as a baseline. I also already knew I like Cold Brew and “Cola” SO we knew instantly this idea would work. Where we went wrong was trying to make it even more unique and adding rum….. Also, I pay attention to temperature and texture of course. Look, we saved you a painful step of experimentation! But if you do have a build on this, let me know what you found tasty. TIME 16:15 Levi: I don't know about you but between the note sleeping and closing down bars the last 2 nights, I'm pretty tired…. Kurt: we did a play on the Sazerac because we wanted to add some cold brew in to incorporate all the flavors. We have varying opinions on how much coffee to add at the moment, I think we are going to have to revisit this when we have the proper Sazerac Rye instead of Woodford Reserve Rye. We took down the Peychauds bitters from 4 drops to 2? Levi: Let's talk about this, we have been thinking about all these drinks, but we start from Googling a recipe to have a starting point. On this one specifically I thought the cocktail would be bitter enough and if we added a coffee flavor it would take it to a more bitter realm. Piece of advice - when you are making cocktails with friends always listen twice to their advice because there is usually a lot both said and ‘unsaid.' If there is cold brew in a cocktail then it needs to be fairly apparent. Kurt: We are like 2 hours into this session. Levi: we started with brainstorming crazy ideas and wrote them all down. Then we did a grocery list. Then we talked through the brainstorming and groceries. I ate a bunch of garlic, then we did the grocery run, Kurt: 19:05 Salty White Russian: That moment when you realize you've been day drinking and are trying to explain things... This one was much harder to type up and talk about because, as mentioned, I had been day drinking allllll day. Then during production you can likely tell that I have been drinking along. Amaretto is a sweet, almond-flavored, Italian liqueur associated with Saronno, Italy (thus the name for one of the most popular brands, Disaronno). Most well-known versions are made from almonds but some are made from a base of apricot pits. The name comes from the Italian “amaro” (which is also a liqueur) meaning “bitter,” thus, amaretto is a “little bitter.” And for any chemists reading this, yes, the cyanide is processed out of the almond prior to being included in the liqueur. I remember the first time I modified a drink. It occurred well before my 21st birthday. Somebody introduced me to the “Fuzzy Navel,” a sweet, thick combination of orange juice and peach schnapps. Today I get reflux just thinking about it. But then, it was a damn epiphany. I remember getting my hands on vodka, perhaps from my parents’ liquor cabinet, but most likely from Anthony’s parents’ liquor cabinet. (We all have that friend or two whose parents aren’t really drinkers but who still keep a full bar. These are the very people who don’t pay much attention to said bar, and we were just the teens to capitalize on that.) I made a Fuzzy Navel, and then I splashed in vodka. It tasted no different but it got us where we wanted to be significantly more quickly. I deemed it a “Hairy Navel.” It all starts there, with the Hairy Navel. (NOTE: You can use a high quality vodka to make just about any mixed drink pack a more powerful punch without sacrificing flavor. What do I mean by “high quality?” You ask. I certainly don’t mean a $30+ bottle. Those are way too expensive. Vodka is, by definition, grain-neutral. That means it should taste and smell like just about nothing. That’s it. To some extent, talking about more or less delicious vodka is like talking about more or less delicious filtered water. I realize there are taste savants out there who really can discern seemingly imperceptible differences of “neutral” gradation…but for most of us with average palates, the argument is entirely bunk. There are several vodkas that fit the bill of high quality AND phenomenal value. These include: Absolute, Russian Standard, Penn 1681, and Tito’s, among others. All of those vodkas are easily obtainable for approximately $20. You really do NOT need to be spending $30 or more on vodka. You can even amp-up your wine by splashing a little of the clear stuff. Really, you can. Try it. Just a little, though. Remember, we’re grown-ass, sophisticated people now. No shots, no Mad Dog, no quarter drafts, and vodka with moderation, please!) Across the course of my life as a casual drinker, I’ve gradually shifted from indiscriminate cheap-drunk to exceptionally discerning buzz-seeker…and I’ve become the de facto mixologist of my family, friends, and immediate neighborhood. In this podcast, I propose that any person can become a rock star home bartender with absolutely minimum equipment, without having to spend extravagant money on ingredients, and with the knowledge of just two drink categories and the seemingly innumerable variations therein. Today we start with the “Highball.” Booze, bubbly, and ice. That’s it. That’s the foundation. Super simple. It’s a fun journey with Jen inserting her usual wit, wisdom, and ball-breaking. It’s a crowd favorite, or so I’m told. We also reference Brad Thomas Parsons (Twitter feed) and his book, “Bitters.” It’s worth getting this book, as it provides a wonderfully written history of bitters then launches into drink recipes, including anecdotes and historical notes. This book can serve as your sole reference for a while, and really the writing is exceptional. Before signing off, I’m going to share two of my recent modified recipes. Both of these drinks have become crowd favorites among my circles. Here goes: 1. The GinettoThis is a variation on a classic gin and tonic, a staple “highball.” You’ll need the following ingredients, all of which are easily obtainable: > Favorite London Dry Gin(Our favorites, in decreasing order, are: Hendrick’s, Bombay Sapphire, Bombay, Beefeater, Bluecoat) > Favorite Amaretto(We use Disaronno, which is the most readily accessible “premium” amaretto.) > Tonic water(We use “Fever Tree,” available at many grocery stores. They use filtered water, cane sugar, and real quinine. You can also use the more traditional brands, but I avoid these because of chemical flavorings and high fructose corn syrup.) > Angostura orange bitters(Easily accessible in grocery stores and typically only $8 per small bottle. You can search around, however, because the market is now flooded with bitters of all sorts. Pittsburgh’s own Wigle Whiskey produces, among it’s bitters variations, a wonderful “Pomander Orange.”) > 1 lime > Ice > Pint glass (or something “large”) > Long spoon > Standard shot glass Fill glass with ice (…crushed or whole, to preference…), squeeze the juice of one full lime into the glass, put in two shots (approximately 2.5 ounces) gin and one shot (approximately 1.25 ounces) amaretto. Fill the rest of the glass with tonic water, then put in the bitters …3-5 shakes. Stir and serve. 2. The “Aaargh”This is a variation on a rum and coke, another classic “highball.” I pronounce it like a cartoon pirate, because this drink makes me feel like a pirate. You’ll need the following: > Favorite spiced rum(I prefer two local spirts here. First is Wigle Landlocked spiced. In position “1A” is Maggie’s Farm Rum Spiced. Both are available at select Pennsylvania wine and spirits stores and they can be obtained online. However, use whatever you love.) > Favorite root beer(I prefer “Virgil’s,” which is available in four packs at grocery stores. They make a delicious Stevia version for those of you trying to shift low carb. They also make a specialty “Bavarian Nutmeg,” which is extra delicious.) > Citrus, molѐ, or chocolate bitters…or all three!(Again, you can go with the Angostura orange here…but a real “Aaargh” has molѐ bitters. Wigle Whiskey makes a wonderfulversion, and it’s what I use.) > One-quarter orange > Ice > Rocks or double old-fashioned glass (or an 8-12 oz water glass) > Long spoon > Standard shot glass Fill glass with ice (…crushed or whole, to preference…), put in two shots (approximately 2.5 ounces) rum and fill the rest of the glass with root beer. Put in bitters…3-5 shakes. Squeeze in one-quarter orange then twist the rind and rub it on the lip of the glass to get the oils and scents on top. Stir and serve. Have fun with this people!! (The intro music is “Cold Beverage” by G Love and Special Sauce, and the outro piece is, “God Moving Across the Face of the Water” by Moby, which, incidentally, is my favorite piece of running music for the very beginning of a long race. Check out both of these artists if you’re intrigued.) -G

MSC Cruises is Mediterranean based and promises a "Mediterranean Way of Life" experience.
