The farmer Angel Network has helped bring the issue of farmers mental health to the forefront in Wisconsin. Dorothy Harms, the chairperson of the Farmer Angel Network of South-Central Wisconsin, explains that they started the network after one of her friends passed away by suicide and knew something had to be done to advocate for the issue. This also led to a sister chapter being formed last year in western Wisconsin by Jennifer Webster who lost her father to suicide. Their goal is to help get the word out about farmer mental health and help families get the help they need for their loved ones that they feel are on the downhill slide. They each explain their stories and they share tips on how to recognize there is an issue with a friend or family member, as well as how to check on them and guide them in the direction for help. They want people to know it is ok not to be ok and that it is hard to take care of others and your farms if you are having a hard time taking care of yourself. The number of the suicide hotline is 988 if you or someone you know is going through a crisis. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's about sustainable growth. It's about creating work environments where you can pick up your kid and you can go and work after dinner if you want but that the volume of work isn't so crazy that you can't really have a life. How can we find this balance where we get the best of people over a longer period of time instead of having higher cases of burnout and things like that. That's what we are trying to provide." Best Practices for Running an Angel Network For running an angel group, here are some best practices to consider: 1. Build processes and programs. The second time you say something put it into an email template, a procedure document, or a website and make it a part of your program.2. Create an ideal investor profile and incorporate the content into your website, emails, and documents. 3. Create an ideal startup profile and use it in your deal flow process.4. Set up the calendar of events and meetings at the beginning of the year and let everyone know the dates and times.5. Establish deadlines for startup applications, investor diligence reports, and more so you can manage the progress.6. Create a set of template emails for managing the deal flow process from start to finish.7. Create an onboarding program for new investor members.8. Create an angel investing introduction program that is self-paced to provide the basics of startup investing to new investors.9. Build three solid deal flow sources that you can go to find quality deals.10. Establish a standard term sheet to use with startups that have no lead investor.11. Establish an advisory program to help startups that need more than just funding. 12. Set up a portfolio system for tracking investments made so you can report aggregate results both internally and externally.13. Establish a brand with a logo, mission, and mantra and use it consistently in all communications. By creating processes and programs, you can better manage the startups, investors, and diligence work that must be done. On this episode, Sabine VdL interviews Susanne Chisthi, one of the leading names in the industry. Susanne started her career in finance before becoming an influential FinTech voice. Susanne is also renowned for her work with investors and FinTech startups through the FINTECH Circle which is a place where startups can seek education and angel investment. Susanne is also renowned for the wonderful books that she has written in collaboration with other co-authors and co-editors to educate the FinTech sector. KEY TAKEAWAYS The unique thing about our books is that we crowdsourced the best knowledge, worldwide, because we believe in the power of the community. One person alone could never write such a comprehensive book on FinTech, RegTech, or InsurTech, for example. It would be impossible. But accessing knowledge from 70 authors globally, representing corporations, Tech startups, Tech scaleups, and thought leaders, all coming together and contributing their own expertise to the projects, makes these books extraordinary. Talking about the lessons we learned from lack of travel – when you buy products abroad you can claim the VAT back, sometimes large amounts. I never actually claim my VAT, because I never wanted to queue up at the airport to claim my VAT receipts. So I never claimed these back in my whole life. One of the FinTech companies I'm working with at present is putting this all online. Imagine the future of VAT claims. This is an example of FinTech hitting a pain point in B2C that millions of customers face worldwide and we can see already a huge impact when travel is back to normal. Diversity is a key thing for anybody in a large financial institution. The team should be diverse. When we think about the testing and development of AI, business leaders need to be accountable for it too. Particularly how fair AI-led decision-making is? Who gets accepted or rejected by an AI algorithm for a loan? Remember that those things can be very discriminatory if they're coded wrongly. It is important for businesses to access a diverse workforce, to be able to develop AI-led technologies, and think about the use cases, how they can go wrong, and how to protect every individual through ethical AI. An ethical AI board is an important mechanism to ensure businesses are doing the right thing long-term and are avoiding renowned stereotypes. We have a responsibility as citizens to make things simpler and more transparent. We've seen lots of movement in the FinTech sector in terms of investment behavior, but the good news is that in the long term the FinTech sector will continue to boom and investors will want to stay in the sector. Investors will return and invest in ventures and deploy capital from the earlier stages to the later stages. BEST MOMENTS ‘Our goal is to make FinTech a mainstream sector and, at some stage, to replace finance overall – there will be no finance without FinTech.' ‘Lots of banks are trying to figure out the best way to engage with the FinTech sector. It's certainly easier said than done. The devil is often in the detail. If you acquire a FinTech company the key thing is to make sure you integrate the company into your organization well so that it still works after the acquisition without destroying its spirit so both the startup and the corporation can benefit.' ‘Technology is everybody's responsibility, it's mandatory for leaders to understand how technology can shape, empower and enable what they do from a strategic point of view.' ‘2020 was a year that shocked us all. I was in China in January of 2020 actually promoting a book. The effect of the current change will be profound. And nobody knows yet what the future will look like. So planning long term will remain challenging.' ABOUT THE GUEST Susanne Chishti is the CEO of FINTECH Circle, Europe's 1st Angel Network focused on fintech opportunities. Susanne is also the founder of the FINTECH Circle Institute, the leading fintech learning platform offering innovation workshops to C-level executives and online courses. She is also the Co-Editor of the bestselling The FINTECH Book, which has been translated into 10 languages and is sold across 107 countries, as well as The WEALTHTECH Book, The INSURTECH Book, The PAYTECH Book, The AI Book, and The LEGALTECH Book (all published by WILEY). She has also been a FinTech TV Commentator on CNBC. After completing her MBA, Susanne started her career working for a FinTech company (before the term “FinTech” was invented in the Silicon Valley 20 years ago.) She then worked for more than 15 years' across a number of financial institutions including Deutsche Bank, Lloyds Banking Group, Morgan Stanley and Accenture in London and Hong Kong. University Angel Network vs. Traditional Angel Network Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. The university angel network has similarities and differences to a traditional angel network. They both consist of a group of investors interested in funding startups. They both want to make a return on their investment. They both want to socialize with others. They differ in several ways: The university angel network puts the give back to the university as their first priority. Providing a student experience and job placement for the student is primary. The university angel network has a built-in target audience of anyone associated with the university. Traditional angel networks come together because they live in the same city. The university angel network can tap into the university entrepreneurship and finance programs and startups accelerators for support. Traditional angel networks must look for local programs to partner with. The university angel network must work within the rules and regulations of the university. The traditional angel network has no restraints beyond SEC regulations. It's important to understand the differences before joining either a university angel group or a traditional one. Thank you for joining us for the Startup Funding Espresso where we help startups and investors connect for funding.Let's go startup something today. ___________________________________ For more episodes from Investor Connect, please visit the site at: Check out our other podcasts here: For Investors check out: For Startups check out: For eGuides check out: For upcoming Events, check out For Feedback please contact info@tencapital.group Please , share, and leave a review. “The Strategic Value of a Community-Based Investment Syndicate” with Kurt Schmidt of the Duke Angel Network Kurt Schmidt joins Assure's CEO Jeremy Neilson in a discussion on the value-add of alumni angel groups. Why Start a University Angel Network? Hello, this is Hall T. Martin with the Startup Funding Espresso -- your daily shot of startup funding and investing. A university angel network is a group of investors formed around the affinity to a university. It typically consists of alumni and supporters of the university. So why start an angel network at a university? It's a great way for alumni to connect back to their alma mater. The members are like-minded business people who connect with each other. The primary purpose of the group is to provide a better education experience for the students as well as job placement. The angel group can focus on startups related to the university or look for startups more broadly. The students participate by helping with the process of funding startups such as providing analysis of the deal flow. The university can extend the student education program through the group by offering course credit and internships. Students who participate find invaluable experience and often receive job opportunities that further their career. Finance students can learn diligence and apply their venture finance education to the startups the angel investors review. Entrepreneurship students learn how startups work by applying their entrepreneurship knowledge to the screening process. The angel group can also draw on resources from the university for analyzing the deals. The university is a non-profit so there's no investing inside the university. An LLC must be set up for any investments the angel group makes. Welcome to a special edition of From Woke to Work: The Anti-Racist Journey. On this episode, host Kamala Avila-Salmon, interrupts the journey through the funnel to RAGE on what happened at the Capitol on January 6, 2021 or as it felt, December 37th in the unending trash year known as 2020. What the HELL happened at the Capitol on Wednesday if not a flagrant representation and affirmation of the potency of White supremacy in our country. And as a Black person in this country, who has been consistently critical of our country for good reason, Kamala was forced into the awkward position of having to appear extra patriotic in her outrage against the Trumpsters who tried, pretty embarrassingly it must be said, to overthrow our democracy. As the insurrection was taking place, Kamala describes the phases of what she was feeling: shock, anger, disgust. With those feelings boiling, it was important to get her on the mic, because anyone aspiring to be an ally or anti-racist, needs to REALLY understand the levels of White privilege on display at the Capitol and how it's connected to Black Lives Matter. Joining her on this week's episode are two powerful and inspiring voices, Ebele Okobi and Dr. Nii-Quartelai Quartey. Ebele is the Public Policy Director for Africa, the Middle East and Turkey at a major tech company and prior to that she has been the global head of human rights at Yahoo, the head of marketing for Management Leadership for Tomorrow, a senior director of advisory services at Catalyst in Silicon Valley and Amsterdam. Dr. Quartey started creating change as a 13-year-old student organizer for Oprah's Angel Network and has been sought out ever since for his skills in organizing social change and influencing organizational leadership on strategic initiatives with a consciousness around racial equity and LGBTQ inclusion. During the 2020 election cycle, Dr. Quartey served as Senior Policy Advisor for the OUT for Biden Initiative of the Biden-Harris Presidential Campaign. He also lives and works in DC so what unfolded last week took place in his backyard. Jump straight into: (00:44) - The foundations and undeniable potency of white supremacy in the US - “Had these men and women, these insurrectionists, these domestic terrorists been black, we all know what would have happened next: we would have been watching a massacre on the steps of the Capitol.” (16:00) - How anger and rage are privileges granted to white people only - “The level of force that they bring to meet us unarmed is just nowhere near the level of force that we saw with people actively trying to overthrow the government.” (25:09) - This is America: On the normalized subjugation of black people - “If it is your natural state to be in a state of subjugation, then you should feel joy that even a couple of you have escaped, because this is the place where you're meant to be.” (28:57) - Enough is enough: The hypocrisy and cynicism of “concerned” politics for their own convenience - “They were in positions of power, in positions of authority and they use their power and authority to uphold white supremacy. You don't get to run away from that. That's who you are. You are a white supremacist.” (36:20) - The magic of Black Twitter, moving forward, and the lessons learned from the white insurrection at the Capitol - “In the same way that white people have educated themselves about so many other things, they can do this as well. Educate yourself about this. “ Resources Connect with https://www.facebook.com/ebele.okobi.5 (Ebele) https://www.facebook.com/Justice-For-Chinedu-391865091606974/ (Justice for Chinedu) Follow Dr. Nii-Quarterlai on https://twitter.com/drniiquartelai (Twitter) and https://www.instagram.com/drniiquartelai (Instagram) Reach out to https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-henderson-0a83ba6/ (Paul Henderson) Enjoy https://twitter.com/hashtag/BlackTwitter?src=hashtag_click (#BlackTwitter)...

Adramé Ndione is an entrepreneur and an Africa-focused investment executive with a proven track record of successful investment activities in Africa. Adramé is the Managing Director of the Gambian Angel Investors Network, Founder and Managing Partner of Vertis Capital, an upcoming West African VC firm. Since 2015 he held investment positions in Private Equity firms in Paris, including Inframed Management, a 350M€ infrastructure investment fund. From 2005 to 2012, Adramé held management positions in Société Générale Investment Bank, a top tier investment bank based in Paris. Adramé brought a wealth of investment knowledge and experience to the WTF Africa Edition podcast. He talks about investing in West Africa and the problems with African angel investor networks not being as active as they could be in the investment space. He discusses the motivation and the skills on the part of some of the existing Angel Network as well as whether they are incentivized enough to be more active. He is working on an initiative to capacitate existing African angel networks so that they can be more active in Africa and particularly the West Africa investment ecosystem. In Africa, investors should not be looking for unicorns, they should be looking for Gazelles, which they are more likely to find in emerging market ecosystems like Africa. Adramé likens equity investment to a marriage where it is necessary to ensure that parties (entrepreneurs and investors) are well aligned to make the investment relationship work. Adramé recommends going to investors before you need them because fundraising can take time. The trouble with that is that as an entrepreneur you have to make the right connections with access to investor networks who can make recommendations on your behalf, which is often more productive than through cold contact. When looking for funding, Adramé recommends looking first in your immediate environment for opportunities, especially when first starting out. Look for grants from international development organizations, government funds, and other sources of funding that might be available. Many entrepreneurs tend to not know what is available in their local environment. Research is a key component in finding funding and there is no shortcut for this. Google is your friend when you are looking for funding, there are many angel networks in many countries so search terms like “angel network Senegal” or insert country name to access the websites for the networks in each country. Work with your hubs that are in your countries because the hubs tend to be connected to the investment networks that exist in a country. Attend events where you might find investors and network to make connections. Make sure that you are strategic and gracious when you network. When approaching investors, know the following: ● Know your market and your numbers (financial model showing returns) ● Have a strong management team - a strong team is important ● Have key ratios- customer acquisition ratio ● The average revenue per user/customer ● Customer lifetime value – how long customers stay with you You can connect with Adramé on LinkedIn or adamendione@vertiscapital.net. Adrame can also be found on twitter. Rate, review, subscribe, and come back for more. We would also love to hear from you. Drop us an email at whereisthefunding@gmail.com and tell us what you like about the show and what topics you want us to explore as it relates to funding for black entrepreneurs and particularly black women entrepreneurs.
