What if the most dangerous form of abuse leaves no physical marks? Join us as we sit down with Ellen Schwartz and Maliha Janjua from Women Aware to uncover the dark reality of coercive control, a form of domestic violence that instills fear and isolates victims without physical assault. As New Jersey pioneers legal changes to recognize this insidious abuse, we dive into the controversies these laws spark, including concerns about judicial understanding. Ellen and Maliha bring a wealth of knowledge from both legal and social work perspectives, emphasizing the importance of recognizing coercive control's pervasive presence in domestic violence cases. Our conversation takes a poignant turn as we shine a light on how domestic violence affects children. Abusers often use children as pawns to manipulate and control their partners, leaving long-lasting impacts on young lives. Drawing from their experiences at Women Aware, Ellen and Maliha share the various tactics abusers employ to exploit the court system and interfere with children's therapy. We discuss the complexities survivors face even after breaking free from abusive relationships and offer strategies for safety planning to help them regain control and protect their families.Recovery from domestic violence is a challenging journey that requires a strong support system. We explore the transformative role of creative arts and trauma-focused therapies in helping children process trauma, and stress the need for finding the right therapists and legal advocates who understand domestic violence dynamics. By highlighting innovative models like the Family Justice Center, we showcase a coordinated community response that offers comprehensive support to survivors. This episode serves as a reminder of the power of community and the ongoing need for trauma-informed care and legal advocacy to help survivors rebuild their lives.

Joining me on the podcast today is Maliha Abdul-Hakim, known to most as the Marathon runner. But there is so much more to her and her story of how she got there. In this episode we hear for the first time the adversity she has had to overcome to even step foot on that start line. She was subjected to parental abduction as a young child, before being rescued by her mother. She and her five siblings moved with their mother from the Middle East to England for a new beginning, and to support her mothers health condition affecting her sight, which later Maliha too would be diagnosed with the same condition. Maliha's outlook on life is an incredible powerful one, her past is what makes her ambitions even stronger, with her heart set on representing the middle east, it's not a case of if, but when.

In Episode 18, Julie speaks with Divorce Attorney Maliha Siddiqui. Divorce is something that is considered to be very taboo in South Asian communities. It's highly stigmatized and as a result, divorce rates are very low within South Asian populations. Even if there's violence, abuse, or other oppressive situations happening within a household, the reality of our culture is that the stigma and shame of divorce is so great it often leads people to stay in their married arrangements rather than go through a divorce . Though we will focus a future episode on individuals who have gone through divorce sharing their experience and overcoming it, today's episode will be informative and educational in nature and discuss Divorce within South Asian communities and legal implications and outcomes of the divorce process. Julie and Maliha discuss the following : Types of divorce cases that are most common within the South Asian community Expected divorce timeline and process Can you file for divorce without an attorney? What happens in situations when one person does not want to comply with the divorce (Hello Kimye ?) Mediation Costs of divorce Parenting vs Financial Categories of Divorce How Maintenance aka Alimony payments are calculated How Child Support Payments are calculated How Marital Estate (assets and debt) are divided Joint Community vs Equitable Distribution States Prenups and Postnups Advice for people who have not broken news to their Spouse that they want to get Divorced Unique Circumstances within South Asian divorces (e.g. gold, marital gifts from family, in-laws involvement, etc) Connect with Maliha Facebook https://www.facebook.com/Siddiquifamilylaw Instagram https://www.instagram.com/siddiquifamilylaw/ Maliha's Presentation with the Muslim Bar Association of Chicago. . Welcome to a special dispatch from Gordon Price, checking in from Expo 2022 in Dubai. (With our apologies for the sound quality. At a place like Expo, it was the quietest place he could find.)One of the best things about a world's fair—after you've visited the pavilions, tasted the food, listened to the music —is oddly, also one of the worst things: standing in lines. Because it is in those lineups where you're likely to engage with people from other places in way you never otherwise would. My best experience in that respect was a little different—not in a line-up, but at a visitor centre. I needed help trying to sign up for the bikeshare system. And it was there that I met Maliha Khan, who was incredibly helpful. (How helpful? She even offered me her credit card when the system wouldn't accept my Canadian one. Turns out we're not that global.)Then. the real conversation began. “Where you from, Maliha?” (When over 70 percent of the people who live and work in Dubai are not from there, it's a safe question to ask.)And so began the basis for this podcast. Who Maliha is, where she's from, and why she's in Dubai. And really, it is about the global identity of youth, of women, of ethnicity, and of ambition and possibility in this age. Which is why Dubai is this age's version of the New York story of the 20th century. Like a magnet it is attracting the talented, ambitious young people from the fastest growing parts of the world— those who want opportunity, experience, and the possibility of the global good life. As Maliha says —she's here to make it, not break it.**************************************************************************The Viewpoint Podcast is a production of Viewpoint Vancouver.
