Interview with a Debut Author  This January, we spoke with the author of Dear Miss Perkins: A Story of Frances Perkins's Efforts to Aid Refugees from Nazi Germany. Released on January 21, 2025, this new book is a fascinating portrait of the progressive female trailblazer and US Secretary for Labor who navigated the foreboding rise of Nazism in her battle to make America a safer place for refugees. As Hitler rose to power, thousands of German-Jewish refugees and their loved ones reached out to the Immigration and Naturalization Service—then part of the Department of Labor—applying for immigration to the United States, writing letters that began “Dear Miss Perkins . . .” This outstanding, inspiring new narrative of the first woman to serve in a president's cabinet reveals the full, never-before-told story of her role in saving Jewish refugees during the Nazi regime. As Secretary of Labor, she wrestled widespread antisemitism and isolationism, finding creative ways to work around quotas and restrictive immigration laws. Diligent, resilient, empathetic, yet steadfast, she persisted on behalf of the desperate when others refused to act. Directed by Steve Barron, the movie revolves around Beldar (Dan Aykroyd) and Prymaat (Jane Curtin), two extraterrestrial beings known as Coneheads who crash-land on Earth. Adapted from the iconic SNL characters, the film masterfully combines humor, wit, and a heartwarming story. As Beldar and Prymaat struggle to fit into the human world, they adopt the surname "Conehead" and attempt to lead a typical American life in suburban New Jersey. With their distinctive cone-shaped heads, they garner attention and curiosity from those around them. However, their peculiar behaviors, M-shaped "removable" teeth, and the challenges of adapting to human customs make for uproarious situations. The movie takes a comedic turn when the couple's daughter, Connie (played by Michelle Burke), is born with a perfectly shaped human head. As the Conehead family finds themselves in danger of being discovered by the Men in Black-like agency, the Immigration and Naturalization Service, they must confront their own conceptions of identity and protect their daughter from an uncertain fate. With its hilarious moments, tongue-in-cheek commentary on immigration, and spot-on performances by Aykroyd, Curtin, and a talented ensemble cast, "Coneheads" remains a cult classic. The film manages to be both absurdly funny and charmingly relatable, reminding us of the importance of embracing our differences and finding a sense of belonging, no matter our origin.More on BAD CHANNELS (1992):In the wacky world of B-movies, "Bad Channels" holds a unique place as a 1992 sci-fi horror musical that defies all expectations. Directed by infamous B-movie maestros, Ted Nicolaou and Charles Band, this cult classic takes viewers on a mind-bending journey into an otherworldly television station where chaotic madness unfolds. The film revolves around a demented alien broadcaster named Vernon Locknut, who possesses the ability to abduct and control human's minds through their television screens. When a small town's radio station, KDUL, is purchased by the mysterious Channels Unlimited, things take a wild turn. Vernon Locknut and his mischievous minions hijack the airwaves, turning the channel into a portal for abductions. As the townspeople become entranced and drawn into their televisions, it's up to a resourceful DJ named Dan O'Dare, the station's program manager, and an eccentric tabloid reporter, Lisa Cummings, to put a stop to the mind-control madness."Bad Channels" immerses viewers in a bizarre blend of genres. What was Abscam? In this episode we try an answer that question for those of you who may not remember, or be as familiar with, what many will recall was the second biggest political scandal of the 1970's and early 1980's.  It involved six United States Congressman and one United States Senator.  They were :US Senator Harrison A. Williams (D-NJ)US Representative Frank Thompson (D-NJ)US Representative John Jenrette (D-SC)US Representative Raymond Lederer (D-PA)US Representative Michael "Ozzie" Myers (D-PA)US Representative John M. Murphy (D-NY)US Representative Richard Kelly (R-FL)It was basically a criminal sting operation conducted by the FBI using a known conman, Mel Weinberg, to set up various elected officials at several levels of the Government. It is the same scandal used for the basis of the movie " American Hustle". It was not just Congressman but also 23 other elected and governmental officials who were eventually netted into the criminal takedown. It also included one member of the New Jersey State Senate, members of the Philadelphia City Council, the Mayor of Camden, New Jersey, and an inspector for the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service who  were all also convicted. The operation was directed from the FBI's office in Hauppauge, New York, and was under the supervision of Assistant Director Neil J. Welch, who headed the bureau's New York Division, and Thomas P. Puccio, head of the Justice Department's Organized Crime Task Force for the Eastern Division of New York.In all of these cases it stemmed from an investigation into theft, forgery, and stolen art. The FBI enlisted the help of a convicted conman to help them run a sting on criminals but as they made their way up the food chain they found they could nab some high ranking elected officials. All of the elected officials were somehow connected to this investigation. All but one. That one case that was the exception was the case of Representative John Jenrette of the 6th District of South Carolina, OUR CONGRESSMAN. In this episode you will hear from the conman himself, you will listen in as the FBI moves in on the congressmen in question, and you will listen in just as the nation did as all of this unfolded. Ironically, the only story they rarely  talked about in this early stage of the game, will be the story of John Jenrette, and as we will show you there are reasons for that.  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Jared Polis announced Friday. In 2013, then-Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law the Colorado Road and Community Safety Act, which made obtaining a standard driver's license accessible for undocumented immigrants and international students. At the time, only four offices in the state actually provided the service. Now, on the 10th anniversary of the signing of the bill, the DMV announced all 36 of the state's driver's license office locations will offer appointments for immigrants and international students to get a standard license or ID card. Gov Polis said  “Here in Colorado, we know that our immigrants strengthen the fabric of who we are. In the last 10 years over 250,000 Coloradans have been able to get their driver licenses and insurance, making all of us safer on the roads.” The law allows all Coloradans to obtain a standard driver license or ID card regardless of immigration status if the applicant can provide proof of identity and Colorado residency. The DMV works with several volunteer nonprofits around the state as a part of the I Drive Coalition to help provide Road and Community Safety Act services for undocumented immigrants to obtain standard license or identification cards. Organizations help to schedule free appointments for people who come to them. Henry Gomez with Grupo Esperanza de Colorado Springs, one of the organizations that supports and provides resources for immigrants, said the legislation is necessary for immigrants in Colorado to do essential daily tasks like driving to a doctor's appointment or taking their children to school. When the bill first passed, it was difficult for people to actually use the service because they had to travel long distances to the few places that offered it and wait hours to schedule an appointment, Gomez said. 1 of 20 statesColorado is one of 20 states, along with Washington D.C., to offer driver's licenses to undocumented residents. DMV spokesperson Stephany Garza said “Colorado has come a long way since the program launched in originally starting in a handful of locations. We've been able to grow it throughout the state, thanks to strong demand and a dedication to partner with community organizations and leaders.” “The DMV's mission is to provide motor vehicle, driver and identity services that promote public safety, trust and confidence, and having trained and licensed drivers on our roads is critical.” COLORADO NEWSLINE: I ain't ‘fraid of no ghost - guns. Because now they're banned in Colorado. BY: SARA WILSON - JUNE 2, 2023 1:48 PMSenate Bill 23- 279 makes the sale, manufacture and possession of ghost guns a Class 1 misdemeanor on the first offense and a Class 5 felony on subsequent offenses.bill sponsor Sen. Rhonda Fields, an Aurora Democrat, said “Ghost guns are untraceable, unserialized weapons that anyone can make or assemble in their own home – and they're extremely dangerous. We worked hard this session to make Colorado safer and prevent gun violence, and this new law is a big step towards reaching that goal.”The legislation was also sponsored by Sen. Chris Hansen of Denver, Rep. Andrew Boesenecker of Fort Collins and Rep. Junie Joseph of Boulder, all Democrats. Every Republican voted no.Law enforcement say ghost guns are being used more often in crimes across the state. The shooters involved with last year's attack at Club Q in Colorado Springs and the March shooting at Denver's East High School both possessed and showed an interest in ghost guns.Ghost gun kits are easily available online for anyone to assemble or 3D-print at home. Because that process bypasses serialization and necessary background checks, the guns can be nearly impossible to trace when used in a crime. Current ghost gun owners have until Jan. 1, 2024 to get the blank firearm, frame or receiver serialized by a licensed dealer. Serialization includes a background check. Going forward, people can still make their own firearms as long as they get them serialized.Eleven states already regulate ghost guns. The Colorado Legislature passed four other bills regulating firearms during this year's legislative session, which wrapped up in early May. That includes a minimum age restriction and three-day waiting period for gun purchases, expansion of the state's extreme risk protection order law to include groups other than law enforcement and a repeal of the state's legal liability protections for the firearm industry.Hats off to Colorado Democrats. They take so much abuse as well as threats from thousands and thousands of extremely aggressive gun rights activists. These gun groups create extremely dishonest and aggressive attack ads, and they do everything they can to show their strength. It takes real guts to pass gun safety laws in the West, and the Colorado Democratic legislators have some serious guts. Congratulations on a great session everyone.  ARIZONA MIRROR:AZ GOP senator proudly flies flag adopted by ‘fringe' far-right extremistsBY: JEROD MACDONALD-EVOY - JUNE 5, 2023 11:20 AMThe desk on the Arizona Senate floor for Republican Sen. Janae Shamp, displays the “An Appeal to Heaven” flag, which has been adopted by Christian nationalists and other extremists in recent years. Shamp says she displays the flag because of its historical ties to the American Revolution, and says she is unaware of its use by far-right extremist groups. But that, of course, is bullshit. The white flag with a pine tree on it and the phrase “An Appeal to Heaven” was originally used by George Washington and the Continental Army. It was later adopted by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts as its naval and maritime flag until 1971, when the copy was dropped, leaving only the image of the pine tree. In recent years, the flag has been adopted by Christian nationalists, who see the flag as a rallying call. Christian nationalists believe that the United States is Christian nation that should base its laws and practices around the teachings of Christianity. The flag has also been embraced by far-right extremist organizations like the Proud Boys and other neo-Nazi groups.Shamp did not respond to questions about whether she embraced the beliefs of Christian nationalism, and said she doesn't know anything about Christian dominionism, a closely related belief system. To investigative journalist, author and researcher David Neiwart, who has written extensively about the far-right, the lines between groups have begun to blur into an entire “universe” of far-right groups from QAnon, militias, white supremacists, and other extremist groups who have gained political influence among conservatives. Most of them share a few things in common, including beliefs in “right-wing authoritarianism” and the alleged supremacy of Christianity. After looking at the various people and causes Shamp has supported over the years, including various extremist and Christian nationalist figures and causes, Neiwart said it's clear to him that Shamp ascribes to those beliefs.  “She is definitely a Christian nationalist, she is definitely QAnon, and a fully enraptured Trumpite,” Neiwert said.  While a surge in Christian nationalism in recent years has garnered media attention — due in part to high-profile conservatives like U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, who explicitly declared herself a Christian nationalist, and the backing of influential leaders like white nationalist Nick Fuentes — Christian dominionism has similarly been on the rise, though with much less fanfare. One of the more popular Dominionist beliefs is in the so-called “Seven Mountain Mandate,” which draws from the biblical book of Revelations and requires Christians to invade the “seven spheres” of society: family, religion, education, media, entertainment, business, and government. In doing so, American life can be reshaped to hew to conservative Christian values. The idea has been embraced and promoted by people like Turning Point USA leader Charlie Kirk and Paula White, the televangelist who served as a “spiritual advisor” to Donald Trump while he was president. According to David Neiwart, the key difference between Christian dominionism and nationalism is that dominionists want everyone under Christian rule, while nationalists think everyone should convert to Christianity.“Christian nationalists take it a step further than Christian Dominionists,” Neiwart said, adding that a dominionist wouldn't care if a Muslim was present, “they just want them under the thumb of Christian leaders.”One of the biggest promoters of Christian nationalism and dominionism has been disgraced Ret. Gen. Michael Flynn, Trump's first national security adviser, who has claimed that he is waging “spiritual warfare” and building an “army of God.” Flynn is also known to associate with other extremist groups. AZ Sen Shamp is a fervent supporter of Flynn's, and has posted praise of Flynn often on social media. The recent COVID-19 special committee she co-chaired was sponsored in part by an organization that Flynn co-founded. “I get goosebumps every time General Flynn talks about our great Nation!” Shamp said in a December 2021 post accompanied by a video of Flynn. At a Trump rally in Florence in January 2022, Shamp told Business Insider that the “No. 1 person standing up for ‘we, the people' is probably Gen. Michael Flynn.” Shamp, a conservative from Surprise, has also been found to have shared a number of QAnon posts on her Facebook linked to Neo-Nazis and antisemites. The flag, which Shamp displays on her desk and in her Twitter banner image, has also been connected to extremist groups and violent events. During the violent events of Jan. 6, the flag was seen being carried by a number of individuals.  “I would say Christian nationalism as a phenomenon is one of the real undergirding movements involved in the insurrection,” Neiwart said, adding that the militias and other groups such as the OathKeepers all had underlying Christian nationalist roots or beliefs. “All these Christian patriots that formed these militias are Christian nationalists as well.”ARIZONA MIRROR:Meet the Dems vying for Gallego's seat in the U.S. House of RepresentativesBY: GLORIA REBECCA GOMEZ - JUNE 2, 2023 1:33 PMSo far, four candidates have already launched campaigns to represent Arizona's 3rd Congressional District, which includes Laveen, Maryvale and part of Glendale. The district is considered a Democratic stronghold, with left-leaning voters outnumbering Republicans three to one. The winner of the Democratic primary is virtually guaranteed to capture the seat in November.First, Laura Pastor. The most recent entrant into the race is the daughter of Rep. Gallego's predecessor, Ed Pastor, who held the seat from 1991 until his retirement in 2015. The younger Pastor has a long career in elected office herself, with three terms on the Phoenix city council representing areas recently drawn into the 3rd District.Prior to her position on the council, she was a classroom teacher who worked with at-risk students. Ms. Pastor also serves on the governing board for Phoenix Union High School. In a launch video on Wednesday, Pastor invoked her family's political legacy and promised to continue it. “For five generations my family has worked for a better Arizona. From my grandfathers - who organized workers in the copper mines - to my mother - who lived with strength and integrity in a time of discrimination - to my dad. My dad taught me that lots of politicians can talk, but what matters is what you deliver.” “I am running to put my experience to work on behalf of Arizonans – to take care of our veterans, to have someone looking out for family budgets, and to protect all of our access to health care, including reproductive care,” Ylenia AguilarIf elected, Aguilar would be Arizona's first formerly undocumented congresswoman. Her family moved to the U.S. when she was just a toddler, and suffered repeated housing and food insecurity. Aguilar attended as many as 20 different schools. The single mother of two credits her early adversity with inspiring a personal imperative to voice the struggles of others. Aguilar spent more than a decade as a translator before becoming the first Latina elected to the Osborn School District Board, where she's still a member. During the Trump presidency, Aguilar helped author a resolution prohibiting ICE agents from entering schools. She also serves on the state's Central Arizona Water Project Board and as the business development manager for SOURCE Global, a Scottsdale-based renewable energy company that helps tribal and rural communities access clean drinking water via hydropanel technology. Water conservation is among her policy priorities, as well as immigration reform, and access to education and reproductive health care. At the top of her list is representing Arizona's diverse communities where past politicians have failed. “My story is your story,” she said, at her campaign kickoff. “I know what you go through. I know how hard you work, how much you love your children, how difficult it can be to get ahead and how often politicians leave our community behind, or worse — how politicians attack our communities trying to take away our rights. In Congress, I will be your voice, because your voice matters.” Yassamin AnsariPhoenix's Vice-Mayor was one of the first to throw her hat in the ring after Congressman Gallego announced his challenge to U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema. Ansari's election as the city's youngest council member in 2021 followed a career in climate change advocacy that included a stint as a policy advisor for the United Nations. Her work on the Phoenix council includes helping to draft and pass a citywide resolution that deprioritized abortion-related arrests and spearheading efforts to electrify Phoenix's public transportation. Those concerns would follow her to the federal level, with more ambitious climate change legislation a key part of her priorities. The country's as-yet unfulfilled pledge to reach net zero emissions by 2050 is of particular importance to Ansari, who vowed to lead an effort to remedy that. Also high up on her roster is gun violence prevention, housing affordability and a living wage. A daughter of Iranian immigrants, Ansari's election would be a first for the district, whose population is 51% Hispanic and has supported Hispanic candidates since 1991. But Ansari's council district, which spans from southwest to downtown Phoenix and has a similar population makeup as CD3, resoundingly backed her in 2021. She said, “As a daughter of immigrants, I very much understand the challenges that our community faces. My constituents know that I don't just represent one community, I represent all communities. And whether you're Latino, White, Black or any other background, representation is about listening to the community and making sure that you're surrounding yourself with people in the community so that their experiences and challenges are represented in the legislation you support.” She said “It's time to have leadership that is young and hungry and ready to take on some of these bigger crises.”Hector Jaramillo Jaramillo traces his activism back to two pivotal incidents that happened at very different times in his life. When he was 4, his father was deported, which he said “opened (his) eyes to the injustices of our current system.” Then, in his early twenties while protesting the killing of George Floyd in 2020, a gun was pointed at his head. Jaramillo was disappointed to find not much had changed after the nationwide movement against racial injustice, and realized that things would only improve if more people were allowed at the decision-making table. The 26-year-old Phoenix native, who currently serves on the governing board of the Glendale Elementary School District, would be among the youngest in Congress if elected. He noted that what he lacks in experience he makes up for in community engagement and personal, real-life knowledge. He said “Legislative experience is important, but so is lived experience – being somebody who's experienced the injustices of our system.” His goals include improving education funding, affordable health care for all and a complete overhaul of the current immigration system. That includes a pathway to citizenship, opening up government assistance programs for undocumented Americans, and shielding victims of crimes from having their undocumented status used against them. Jaramillo also wants to abolish ICE and Customs and Border Protection. He says their duties can be effectively carried out by their predecessor, the country's Immigration and Naturalization Service, as was the case before post-9/11 policies created the Department of Homeland Security. Jaramillo, who called himself an anti-establishment candidate, is hoping voters who are tired of the status quo will support his bid. He said “If you're happy with the way things are, keep electing the same people. But if you want real, progressive change, try someone new.” Raquel TeránWith a 17-year-long career in Arizona politics, tenures in both the state Senate and House of Representatives and the title of Democratic Party Chair under her belt, Terán is perhaps one of the most experienced candidates in the race to capture Gallego's seat. Born and raised on the Arizona border in Douglas, she attributes her passion for politics to the anti-immigrant rhetoric she grew up around. That motivation resulted in helping to organize a recall campaign against former state Sen. Russell Pierce, who authored Arizona's notorious 2010 ‘show us your papers' law, and working to defeat Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Maricopa County. Teran said, “I have been a fighter at the state legislature, and I'm ready to take on the extremists in Congress. We have a lot of work to do and I intend to bring my ‘si se puede' attitude to Washington DC”.Terán's top priorities include immigration reform, affordable housing, reproductive rights, holding corporate polluters accountable, and requiring wealthy corporations to pay their fair share are key goals for her. On Monday, U.S. Sen. Mark Kelly endorsed Raquel Terán in her bid for Congress. He said “Raquel has spent nearly two decades helping bring together a diverse coalition of voters that turned our state blue.”Welp, that's it for me! After 12 years under the leadership of Mayor Michael Hancock, in which Denver has experienced rapid growth and a booming economy, the growing pains are catching up with us and Denver's new mayor will face crisis-level homelessness, addiction, and gun violence.Mike Johnston is a boyish Ivy League boy who has run for lots of things and served as lots of other, different things. Jokes aside though he seems to have the respect of a lot of people I deeply respect, and I'm excited to see what he can do. COLORADO NEWSLINE:All Colorado DMVs now offer driver's licenses to undocumented residentsBY: SHANNON TYLER - JUNE 6, 2023 3:10 PMEvery driver's license office in Colorado will now offer license and ID card services to undocumented residents and international students, Gov. Rep. Hi Gang:  Happy Friday and Happy Thanksgiving! For my program this evening I have decided to focus on the true magnitude of the immigration crisis by proving you with important insight into all of the elements of the dysfunctional immigration system that have, for decades, failed to protect America and Americans. Last week I discussed my recent article, Crisis On The Southern Border: Only The Tip of Biden's Immigration Iceberg, so tonight we will consider the many other components of the “Immigration Iceberg.” While Republicans are now calling for the resignation or impeachment of DHS Secretary Mayorkas for his failure to secure the Southern border- the real question is what real border security would require. This will be my focus tonight- calling upon my 30 years of real world experience at the former INS (Immigration and Naturalization Service). It has never been more important that we truly learn how to speak with our fellow Americans in non-confrontational but in fact-based effective and persuasive ways.  Immigration is one issue that should unite all Americans- if all of the facts were made known. Please read my articles. If you like them, post the links on FaceBook along with a link to my radio show.  Be a part of my “Bucket Brigade of Truth” and tell your friends and neighbors about my program- and mywebsite, remember Democracy is not a “Spectator Sport!”

Even though it would not benefit her for decades, Mabel Lee worked for women's suffrage, leading the New York City Suffrage Parade on horseback at the age of only 16. Lee was the first Chinese woman to earn a PhD in Economics in the United States, graduating from Columbia University in 1921 with a dissertation entitled: “The Economic History of China: With Special Reference to Agriculture,” and then spent her life helping the Chinese community in New York City through her work with as director of the First Chinese Baptist Church of New York City.  Joining me to help us learn more about Mabel Lee is Dr. Cathleen Cahill, Associate Professor of History at Pennsylvania State University and author of the 2020 book Recasting the Vote: How Women of Color Transformed the Suffrage Movement. The Supreme Court issued its unanimous decision in Sanchez v. Mayorkas on June 7, 2021. Jose Santos Sanchez, a citizen of El Salvador, entered the United States illegally in 1997. Four years later, he applied for and was granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) then in 2014, Sanchez applied for Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR) status. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services denied Sanchez' LPR application, finding him ineligible based on his illegal entry—so Sanchez sued in District Court. The court sided with Sanchez, holding that the grant of TPS automatically made Sanchez eligible for LPR consideration. On appeal, the Third Circuit reversed, finding Sanchez ineligible for LPR, based on his illegal entry, and the Supreme Court affirmed. The Court found that eligibility for LPR status under 8 U.S.C. Section 1255 requires “admission” defined as “the lawful entry of the alien into the United States after inspection and authorization by an immigration officer.” As a result, Sanchez' illegal entry made him ineligible for LPR.Joining us to discuss the decision is Hon. Today we are going to continue our discussion on immigration. I speak with Milli Atkinson, the Legal Director of the San Francisco Immigrant Legal Defense Collaborative. The collaborative is made up of 15 different non-profit organizations. The collaborative aims to provide legal representation and a host of culturally competent areas of support for people with immigration related challenges. Legal representation is particularly important because immigrants have no right to legal representation in our country. Milli gets into the real life challenges that immigrants and our government face. She describes our system as it was before 2017, and how it has evolved. Milli goes through a case that she tried and how things have changed since she tried that case. We speak about the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) and how Rapid Response Networks have been developed to deal with ICE's tactics. If you would like to learn more about the San Francisco Immigrant Legal Defense Collaborative, you can visit their website at SFILDC.org. For a little context, in the US, prior to 1965, legal immigration was organized on the basis of ethnic quotas. With the Civil Rights movement, the unfairness of such a system was partially recognized by the government. Illegal immigration at the time wasn’t really a big issue. Our foreign born population was quite static. Our border with Mexico was porous. Douglas Massey studied migration and observed that immigration was circular. Seasonal workers would come to the US, then return home.In about 1973, things changed. Leonard Chapman, a retired Marine, was the Commissioner of Immigration and Naturalization Service. A good military man, he made it his job to organize and control the movement of people. He decided that US borders be rigorously and efficiently controlled. Perfectly natural for a commander in war who is trying to control territory. The problem with this rigorous enforcement of the border crossings was that it then became much more difficult for seasonal workers to enter the US. And of course, once they got here to work, they knew it would be difficult to return to the US again, so they had a huge incentive to stay in the US. And, since they were going to be staying here, they also had a huge incentive to have their family members join them here in the US.The result was that the foreign born population doubled from 1970 to 1990. It doubled again between 1990 and 2010. The increase in the 1990’s and first decade of 2000 was in part due to violence and social unrest caused by the civil war in El Salvador, as well as the destabilization of economies, and gangland development in El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala. Some people may argue, not our people, not our problem. Illegal immigrants use more social services than they pay for here, and that isn’t fair. The illegal immigrants take American jobs, and that isn’t fair. I submit, however, that these complaints are simplistic and lack basic compassion. How can you expect people to pay for social services when they are not allowed to pay taxes? The US Government, the Pew Research Center and dozens of Scholars have performed empirical studies that show that immigrants, increase job production and economic growth. The economist Christophe Albert, and others argue that low skilled illegal immigrant workers actually produce more jobs and increase the well-being for others more than legal immigrants and native US workers in the same sector of the economy.Regardless of where one falls in their opinions, most everyone should agree that there are basic human rights, and that people should be treated fairly and with respect. The San Francisco Immigrant Legal Defense Collaborative aims to p

This week on Hashtag History, we are discussing John Demjanjuk. In 1975, the United States Immigration and Naturalization Service received a list of individuals living in the United States that were suspected of having supported Germany during the Second World War. One particular name on this list was that of John Demjanjuk, a fifty-five year old naturalized US citizen living in the suburbs of Seven Hills, Ohio with his wife and kids. He would be identified by Holocaust survivors in Israel that alleged that he was the notorious “Ivan the Terrible” that worked at the Treblinka extermination camp where hundreds of thousands of Jews were killed. Demjanjuk would deny these accusations and would fight it in court for the remainder of his life. When he died in 2012, a final judgment on his appeal still hadn’t been issued, meaning that - to this day - Demjanjuk is technically, on paper, innocent… So is this a case of one of the most horrific Nazis of all time being convicted for his crimes? Or is it an innocent man and a victim of mistaken identity? A special thank you to Podcorn for sponsoring this episode! I Married Dora is an American sitcom that aired on ABC from September 22, 1987 to January 8, 1988. It was created by Michael J. Leeson. Los Angeles architect and single father Peter Farrell (Daniel Hugh Kelly) was dependent upon his housekeeper Dora Calderon (Elizabeth Peña). However, she was an illegal alien from El Salvador and the United States government's Immigration and Naturalization Service was about to deport her. To prevent her from being arrested upon her return home, and to be able to continue to employ her services as a housekeeper, the two married. As marriages under false pretenses were (and still are) violations of federal law, the first episode included a disclaimer notifying viewers of this fact and adding, "You should not try this in your own home." Two important aspects of the stories were the threat of their sham marriage being discovered by authorities and the possibility that they might fall in love, normalizing and legitimizing their marriage. Farrell's children were 13-year-old Kate (Juliette Lewis) and 11-year-old Will (Jason Horst). The opening titles and closing credits were filmed, but the episodes themselves were shot on videotape.

What is actually happening in our immigration courts? And more importantly, what isn’t? Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by Paul Schmidt, a recently retired U.S. Immigration Judge and an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown law School, to discuss the immigration crisis, specifically the backlog of cases that persists in our immigration courts and the problems these could cause. With an extensive and varied background in immigration – he was general counsel to the Immigration and Naturalization Service, the predecessor of ICE and he worked on the last big federal immigration legislation, all the way back in 1986 – Judge Schmidt joins the show today to talk about the immigration courts and how he fears that a backlog of cases could cause a civil rights disaster. Judge Schmidt notes that the government shutdown only made matters worse. If Congress and the President fail to reach a compromise in the coming days and weeks, tens of thousands of additional immigration cases will be put on hold, further clogging the system. Judge Schmidt has an informed perspective on the immigration crisis and he believes that the pile up of cases in our immigration courts is an injustice, a due-process issue, that could have dire consequences. Judge Schmidt explains that this is an “absolute mis-management of the whole system,” and breaks down the real issues that surround this aspect of the immigration crisis. A crucial problem of the immigration crisis that rarely gets talked about, the issue of the backlog of our immigration courts, is something that absolutely needs more attention. Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast series Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by Grover Joseph Rees, a retired US Ambassador, retired Chief Justice of American Samoa, and former General Counsel to the Immigration and Naturalization Service, to talk about the judicial selection process.  Mr. Rees was also the chief judge picker in the Department of Justice during the mid-part of Ronald Reagan’s Administration.   Often the media focuses on many of the policies and changes a president wants to make or promises to make while they are in office.  But many of those changes can be un-done by another president. One of the few things a president can do that can’t be reversed later is appointing judges to the various federal courts throughout the country.   On this episode, Aaron and Joseph talk about his experience and background having worked under President Reagan as well as his experience working as a law professor at the University of Texas. They also reminisce about an interview Aaron did while working at the Legal Times where he traveled to American Samoa when Joseph was the Chief Justice of that Pacific island nation.   Joseph  also weighs in on the performance of his friend and former colleague, John Bolton, who was recently appointed as President Trump’s National Security Advisor. He says that though it’s too early to tell yet, he believes John has a large role in the North Korea negotiations and thinks they’ve had a good strategy for those talks so far.   With Joseph’s experience as a professor, serving as an ambassador, helping advise President Reagan on Judicial nominees, and his experience as an attorney, he is one of the most knowledgeable people to talk about how judicial nominees are chosen. Joseph explains the process starts by looking at the nearly 1700 judicial positions and seeing what seats need to be filled. Then for all of the circuit courts and district courts they will consult with the Senator of that state to find the best candidates.   Join us today as Grover Joseph Rees and Aaron Freiwald talk about the Judicial nomination and selection process.   Host: Aaron Freiwald Guest: Grover Joseph Rees   Follow Good Law | Bad Law: YouTube: Good Law | Bad Law Instagram: @GoodLawBadLaw Website: https://www.GoodLawBadLawPodcast.com

Warfare and unrest is creating a flood of refugees. The United Nations estimates there are more than 21 million refugees worldwide. Resettling them is a controversial topic. President Trump, citing problems in Europe and concerns about terrorism, wants a 120-day delay in accepting refugees into the United Sates until the vetting process is examined. Lutherans have long been involved in helping refugees. In 1939, the National Lutheran Council set up a department to help Lutheran refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. In 1954, the LCMS worked with what would become the Lutheran Immigration and Naturalization Service. Guest Linda Hartke, President and CEO of the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service, says there is a lot of misinformation concerning refugees, including the exactly the exact definition of what is a refugee, the vetting of refugees as opposed to immigrants, and where they are from. She addresses those topics on today's WLN. Learn more about their work at lirs.org.

sermon notes Introduction If you were a high ranking official in the Pentagon working on top secret intelligence data, you would work behind a door accessible only with an iris scan. The camera designated for this purpose would be connected to a database, and through that process, your unique identity would be detectable. More and more, the issue of identity is pushing to the fore. That is especially true after the September 11th terrorist attacks. The United States government has a quandary of balancing a free and open society with screening and vetting people who come across our borders for business or pleasure or even to immigrate. Agencies, corporations, and others use technology known as biometrics, the measurement of some physical attribute of the human body. Unique identity is one application among several. Law enforcement agencies have used fingerprints for a long time; the FBI has millions and millions of fingerprints stored in their database to help identify people for various purposes. According to a CBS 60 Minutes recent report, fingerprints are not foolproof. A Japanese man proved with Crazy glue that he could get fingerprints off of a drinking glass and use it to fail some fingerprint tests. So more and more law enforcement agencies are looking to other biometrics such as DNA, taking a sample from one who is accused of a crime, in order to be more accurate. DNA samples do not solve the need for quick identification, such as opening the door at the Pentagon or boarding an airplane. An iris scan is by far the easiest and the most accurate means of biometric identification to date. According to the information from Iris Scan, a company that makes these machines, only one in 1078 times will there be a match from one eye to the next. There are about 5.8 billion people on earth. Given that probability, with 5.8 billion planets with the same number of people, there would not be two identical irises. With two seconds of scan, an individual can be identified and matched. Individuals must be able to maintain identity across the internet to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft when conducting e-commerce with a credit card, protected with a password. Immigration and Naturalization Service officials must be able to identify a person who presents a passport. The Pentagon must be able to limit access into top secret rooms to those who have clearance. Swiss banks operating with numbered accounts must be able to know that the person withdrawing from an account is the same French industrialist who put the millions of francs into the bank. As important as all of these things are, they pale in comparison with the importance of your soul. For what would it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? Of the approximately 10 billion plus people that have ever lived (impossible to know the exact number), God must identify for us the one man who is the Son of Man and the Son of God, the Savior of the world. In that one man, we must put our faith. We must trust in Him for the salvation of our souls. How will God identify Christ for us? The answer is in Scripture: He has given us prophecy, which targets and triangulates one individual, the only one who could fulfill all of the prophetic pictures of the Christ. There are two different categories of prophecy. One is verbally predictive prophecy, such as Isaiah 53: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter and as a lamb before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth” speaking of the life of Christ, how he would be our substitute at the cross. Isaiah 9 is another: “For to us a son is born, to us a child is given, and the government will be on His shoulders… He will reign on David’s throne…” The Son of David would be the king of the world. The second category of prophecy is typically predictive prophecy. In other words, elements of Christ’s life and ministry were acted out by others in space and time as a type, prior to his incarnation, and recorded for us in the words of Scripture. All of them together give us a picture of what Jesus came to do. Of all of the typically predictive prophecies, one of the clearest is in Genesis 22. Review of the First Eight Types We previously considered the first eight of fifteen elements laid out in the story in Genesis 22 between Abraham and Isaac which are a type, or prophetic picture, of the Gospel. Genesis 22:2 says, “Then God said, ‘Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.’” Father/son relationship: Abraham was Isaac’s father. God the Father gave His only begotten Son for us. Pre-determined deliberate choice on the part of the father: Abraham had time to think about what he was doing — a three-day journey preceded by tasks of preparation such as chopping firewood. This showed a great deliberate choice on the part of the father to sacrifice his son, Isaac. That is nothing compared to the eternal foreknowledge of God the Father — from before the foundation of the world, God had determined to sacrifice His only begotten Son for the sins of the world. The father and the son were alone: Abraham and Isaac left the servants behind and went alone up on Mount Moriah. The heavenly Father and the only begotten Son alone worked salvation. There was no other human involved; there could be none. The transaction from the Father and the Son won our salvation. Isaac carried his own wood: This was fulfilled in Christ as he carried the cross himself. The Gospel of John states in the Greek in the intensive: “He, bearing His own cross himself, went out.” That was also borne out in a spiritual sense — Jesus was the sin bearer for the world. He physically bore the cross, but he also carried our sins on himself. The fire of judgment: Abraham had the fire ready to consume Isaac. God had commanded that he be offered as a burnt offering. Fire is a picture of God’s judgment and wrath. While God ordained for Christ to be the blood sacrifice, he was not to be burned up. He did have the fire of zeal in his heart for the temple of God that led him to cleanse the temple at least twice, into immediate problems with the powers that be at the time, and immediately to his death. John 2 says, “Zeal for your house will consume me” which means literally “burned me up, is burning within me.” And Jesus drank the cup of God’s wrath spiritually at the cross. The death penalty was required: Abraham was not commanded to sell his son Isaac into slavery or to wound him, but rather he was commanded to kill Isaac. He had to be put to death. “For the wages of sin is death.”From the very beginning, there has been a link between sin and death, and so Isaac had to die. So also Jesus gave himself up unto death; He died on the cross as an atoning sacrifice for sin. The moment of revelation to the son was shocking: At one point, Isaac did not know that he was to be the sacrifice. He asked, “Here's wood and fire, but where is the sacrifice?” Abraham spoke to his son and said, “God will provide the sacrifice.” At some point, Isaac realized he was the sacrifice. That must have been an amazing moment of revelation for him. Jesus Christ in His deity was omniscient, but during his incarnation, he limited himself in space and time. He could only be one place at one time. That did not mean he was no longer God, but that was something he took on himself. In some way, he was also limited in his knowledge. It makes sense in that he was born an infant, and wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger. Luke 2:52 says, “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” At some point, the Heavenly Father revealed to the earthly Son who had taken on a human body: “You will die for sin.” That revelation continued until, on the night before he was crucified, it came to a peak in the Garden of Gethsemane. Mark’s Gospel says that Jesus was astonished and he fell to the ground. As he prayed, great drops of blood were falling to the ground. God had in some way opened up his mind and showed him what it would be like to drink the cup of God’s wrath, which Jesus drank it to the bottom. The son willingly yielded to death: This detail is coupled with the previous one. Reading between the lines, we assume that a young man strong enough to carry all the wood of the offering is strong enough to fight off an aged father if he had wanted to, or certainly strong enough to run away, but Isaac wanted to do neither. He willingly submitted to death. In the same way, Jesus, in the greatest, most courageous act of heroism in history, said, “Yet not as I will, but as you will.” He desired to drink the cup. Our salvation is based on that deliberate act of obedience. Romans 5:19 says, “For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.” That was Jesus’ obedience. List of Types Continued The Son Was Bound The ninth type is in Genesis 22:9: “When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood.” It should not trouble us that Abraham bound Isaac as though he was trying to get away, or there was some kind of struggle. If there had been any kind of struggle, Isaac would have won. Luther says it was not because Isaac was trying to get away or was weak in any way, but because Abraham was following the pattern for sacrifices. The sacrifice was bound, so he was going to bind his son as he was about to slay him. Perhaps also it might have been an act of mercy to help Isaac physically to stay on the altar. I cannot imagine what it must have been like for him to bind up his own son, to lash his hands and feet with a cord. What grief must have filled his mind with every knot. Abraham laid Isaac on the altar in a picture of total submission to the will of God, but an incredible act of courage and faith for Abraham. This prophecy, this binding of Isaac, was fulfilled in a number of ways in Christ. First and foremost is the spiritual binding of Jesus. Jesus was hemmed in, or bound, by the will of God and the Scripture. He could do no other than die on the cross, and he knew it. He says this in Luke 12:50, rendered from the Greek most accurately in the KJV: “But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!” He is saying in effect, “I am in a strait jacket until it is done, bound by the word of God.” The baptism he must endure clearly refers to his death. Later, John uses the same Greek word, speaking of Jerusalem being surrounded and hemmed in from every side by his opponents. Jesus said he felt that way by the will of God, surrounded, hemmed in, having no other place to go. In a crowd of people, a woman who had been bleeding for 12 years came up behind him unnoticed and touched the hem of Jesus’ garment. Luke 8:45 says, “‘Who touched me?’ Jesus asked. When they all denied it, Peter said, ‘Master, the people are crowding and pressing against you.’” The same Greek word is used to refer to the press of the crowd. Jesus felt bound by the will of God, and this really comes down to the moment when he was being arrested. When Peter drew his sword to fight for Jesus, Jesus told Peter, “Put your sword away, for all who live by the sword will die by the sword.” In Matthew 26:53-54, he said, “Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels? But how then would the Scriptures be fulfilled that say it must happen in this way?” Jesus was bound in by the scripture, and there was no other way for his life to end. He had to die on the cross. He rebuked Peter for trying to disrupt the scripture path that God had laid out for him. Jesus was bound in by it. He gives glimpses of what it must have been like for him. John 12:27 says, “Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” You can see the sense of the straitjacket in a way, the binding of Jesus, not against his will, but just hemmed by the word of God. There was also a physical fulfillment. Isaac was bound by cords, and Jesus was physically bound by cords. All four gospels mention it. Matthew 27:1-2 says, “When morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death. And they bound him and led him away and delivered him over to Pilate the governor.” The Father Was to Strike the Son Himself The tenth picture of the Gospel is that Abraham was commanded to strike Isaac himself, to put his own son to death. I mentioned Patrick Morley’s account of the father on the fishing trip with his son in Alaska when their float plane leaked and sank. The father did not want to leave his son to die in the cold waters of Alaska. Though he probably could have saved himself, he did not want to leave his son to die alone in the cold Alaskan waters. Instead, he stayed and died with his son. It would be an equally difficult, horrible experience for a father to watch his son die and be powerless to save him, as with leukemia or some other disease. It would be even more horrible and difficult to watch your son die and choose not to save him though you could. What kind of father would have the power to save his son but choose not to? Pastor Florescu, a Romanian pastor during the time of the communist oppression in Romania, was arrested for his faith. During his imprisonment, he was beaten every day. At night he was kept in a horrible prison cell. They forced large starving rats through the drainage pipe which would harass him all night. He had to stay awake and vigilant all night to keep the rats at bay, to keep them from biting and eating at his bleeding wounds. And then the next morning, his oppressors would begin again. This went on for three weeks. They wanted him to reveal the list of all of his congregation members to arrest them for torture as well. He refused; he would rather die than betray his brothers and sisters in Christ. However, when they brought in his 14-year-old son and started to beat him with the clear intention of killing him, this man, broken down by lack of sleep, physical pain, and torture, wavered and said to his son, “I cannot watch any longer. I must tell them what they want to know.” The son said, “Father, do not do me the injustice of having a traitor as a father. Stand firm. I will die with the words Jesus and my fatherland on my lips.” This incited the communists to anger. They killed the 14-year-old son. The father had the ability to deliver his son and chose not to because his son exhorted him not to, knowing it would lead to more suffering and death of more Christians. Harder still would be for a father to put his own son to death, the very thing that Abraham was commanded to do. He was not simply powerless to save his son, nor had the power to save him and chose not. He was commanded to be the one to do it himself, which, in a very small way, mirrored what our heavenly Father did to his own Son at the cross. This is an astonishing thing. God the Father gave to his Son the cup of His own wrath. Isaiah 53:10 says, “Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer…” The Father poured out His own wrath on His Son. You could think that God the Father did it for the joy that was set before him, as the Son did. That is true, but it was not easy. We are emotional beings. The feelings we have for our children is a dim reflection, being created in the image of God, of how the Father feels for His own Son. Our Heavenly Father is an emotional being. It was not a light thing for Him to put His own Son to death. There are at least two indications of what the heavenly Father was feeling at that moment. First, Luke 23:44-45 says, “It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining.” Second, at the moment of death, Matthew 27:50-54 says, “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit. At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split. The tombs broke open and the bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs, and after Jesus' resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many people. When the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and all that had happened, they were terrified, and exclaimed, ‘Surely he was the Son of God!’” It was not a light thing emotionally for the Father to do this to his own Son, but it is precisely what he did. What Abraham was asked to do, he did, he crushed his only son, but it still would not have compared because it was a spiritual crushing, it was the wrath of hell that the Son experienced on the cross, and the Father gave him the cup. The Shedding of Blood Eleven, we see the shedding of blood. Abraham was set to slay his son. He was ready to take the knife, to plunge it into his son’s body, to shed his son’s blood, because the sacrifice required it. Sacrifices in the Old Covenant were blood sacrifices, the only acceptable gift to God for our sin. Later, the Mosaic Law says in Leviticus 17:11, “For the life of a creature is in the blood, and I have given it to you to make atonement for yourselves on the altar; it is the blood that makes atonement for one’s life.” Hebrews 9:22 says, “…without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.” Abraham was commanded to shed his son’s blood. So also Jesus shed his blood on the cross. He would not be suffocated or drowned or stoned to death. He was to die a bloody death. His blood would be shed. Ephesians 1:7 “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace.” Find your significance, your lasting joy in that God the Father shed his own Son’s blood for our sins. It is enough. He does not ask anything more of us. Our works cannot add anything to the finished work of Christ on the cross. The blood of Christ is sufficient for all of our sins, past, present and future. That blood was shed at Calvary. The Angel of the Lord Twelve, the angel of the Lord appeared just as Abraham reached out his hand to take the knife to slay his son. Genesis 22:11-12: “But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, ‘Abraham! Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied. ‘Do not lay a hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.’” Who is the angel of the Lord? Angels are spiritual beings created by God to serve Him. Psalm 103:20-21 says, “Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will.” Angels are created servants who do God’s will. Angel is the Greek word for “messenger”, somebody sent to bring a message or act as a representative for the king. Angels are now assigned to minister to we who are being saved. Hebrews 1:14 says, “Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?” Angels appeared regularly in the Old Testament in various ways. But the angel of the Lord is different. He speaks and acts differently. He takes a different role than other angels do. He is treated differently in the accounts. The angel of the Lord is none other than the second person of the Trinity, Jesus Christ. Before he took on a human body, the angel of the Lord — Jesus Christ — spoke to Abraham and stopped him from killing his son, Isaac. In Genesis 16:10, the angel of the Lord appeared to Hagar and said, “I will so increase your descendants that they will be too numerous to count.” Angels usually say things like, “The Lord will increase your descendants.” But the angel of the Lord says, “I will increase your descendants.” After the angel of the Lord departed from Hagar, Genesis 16:13 says, “She gave this name to the LORD who spoke to her: ‘You are the God who sees me,’ for she said, ‘I have now seen the One who sees me.’” In Exodus 3, the angel of the Lord appeared to Moses in the flames of a burning bush. Two verses later, the Lord spoke to Moses from within the bush. The angel of the Lord spoke to Moses, and the angel was God Himself who sent Moses to Egypt. Even more striking, God spoke to the Israelites through Moses in Exodus 23:20-21: “Behold, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared. Pay attention to him [the angel of the Lord] and listen to what he says. Do not rebel against him; he will not forgive your rebellion, since my Name is in him.” No other angel would be described that way — My name is in him, he will not forgive your rebellion. Who are angels to forgive or not? That is not their job. God alone can forgive sins. But the angel of the Lord is God, because God’s name is in him. Genesis 22:11-12 gives the strongest account of the angel of the Lord. “But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, ‘Abraham! Abraham!’ ‘Here I am,’ he replied. ‘Do not lay a hand on the boy,’ he said. ‘Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.’” Now I know. The angel spoke as though he was watching, assessing, trying to determine whether Abraham loves God and will obey and follow Him. He was watching and assessing, because He is God. The angel of the Lord watches and assesses. The angel of the Lord became later the Son of Man, and because he is the Son of Man, he will judge the entire human race. So he has the right to sit and decide whether we fear God or not. He is the judge of all the earth. The angel of the Lord said “Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” The Lord told Abraham to sacrifice his son. Abraham was thinking of the Lord when he was going to offer Isaac up as a sacrifice. How is it that the angel of the Lord gets to say “you have not withheld from me your son, your only son”? The heavenly Father is not jealous of the angel of the Lord, because he is His beloved Son. It is perfect that Jesus stopped Abraham from sacrificing Isaac, as though he was saying, “Let me do it. You do not need to kill your son. I will take his place.” The voice of the Lord that calls out to stop Abraham is the angel of the Lord. Redemption and Resurrection Thirteen, Isaac was released, giving a picture of redemption and of resurrection. After the angel of the Lord called to Abraham and stopped him, Abraham set his son Isaac free. The time of Isaac’s suffering, of being bound, was over. Perhaps Abraham used the same knife that he would have used to kill his son to set him free. Walking down the mountain must have been one of Abraham’s happiest moments after what must have been one of his most miserable and difficult, walking up the mountain. What a test, what a trial, what an incredible moment — but what joy! Did they walk? Or did they float? What an encounter with God as they came down. What must that have felt like to cut him free! He is released from his bondage. This is a picture of our salvation in three ways. First, Isaac represents Christ. Christ was released from the grave through his resurrection. Peter, preaching on the day of Pentecost, said in Acts 2:24, “But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.” Death is bondage, chains which no one is strong enough to break, but Jesus was. It was impossible for death to keep Jesus in bondage. He broke the chains of the grave, he is set free. Romans 6:9 says, “We know that Christ being raised from the dead will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him.” He has broken the bonds of death. Second, Isaac represents us, humans who are set free because Jesus will die in our place. The angel of the Lord called down and Isaac did not have to die. Neither do we who have trusted in Christ. Jesus will take our place. When he was set free, so are we also were set free. We are pictured in Isaac. He is the sinner who was released. Jesus says as he began his preaching ministry in the temple in Capernaum, Luke 4:18: “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners…” Jesus proclaims freedom for those who are held in bondage, in sin. In John 8:34-36, he says, “I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” Jesus has come to set us free from sin’s penalty and power and from everything that sin has ever done to us. Hebrews 2:15 says he has come to “… free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” Isaac being set free is a picture of us who are saved through faith in Christ. Amen. Third, Isaac represents physical creation. Physical creation is in a kind of bondage now to decay. Physical creation is enslaved because there is a link between man and the world around us, so that the ground was cursed when Adam sinned, so that Noah took a bunch of animals on the ark. God established and makes clear that link between us and the world. The world is groaning under a kind of bondage because of our sin. Romans 8:20-21 says,“For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God.” Amen and Amen. Creation is in bondage right now. Fall is a beautiful time, but represents decay. Leaves fall and decompose. Creation is in bondage, and it will be in until we are raised from the grave. When we are raised, there will be a New Heaven and a New Earth, home of righteousness. Temporary Substitution Fourteen, Genesis 22:13 says, “Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son.” The ram was also a type or picture of Christ, and so was every animal offered in the Old Covenant. All of those animal sacrifices were types or pictures of Christ, they were substitutes. Animal sacrifice had been around a long time. The first instance was in Genesis 3, when God covered naked Adam and Eve with the skins of animals. He got those from the animals. They did not give their lives up willingly. They died so that Adam and Eve might be covered. What a picture of what Christ did. Abel offered to God a better sacrifice than Cain did, for he offered an animal sacrifice. Noah got off the ark and offered some of the clean animals he had brought as a burnt offering. The Lord smelled the aroma of that sacrifice. Abraham himself had done it many times, but here the substitutionary aspect of animal sacrifice is clear. Verse 13, [NASB] “…and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.” The substitute, the ram, dies and the son lives. I cannot imagine what Isaac must have felt as he looked at that ram, being killed as his father was going to kill him. He may have thought, “That could have been me. The ram is my substitute. I am not dead, I’m alive. I can walk down the mountain with my father.” But something was amiss. Perhaps never before or again will the inadequacy of animal sacrifice be so clear. Isaac, a living breathing son of Abraham, the promised child, a human being, ready to die, was released by an animal, a ram that happens to be caught in a thicket. It was a clear step down. David says in Psalm 51:16, “You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it; you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.” Hebrews 10:4 say about the sacrifice: “…it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.” The ram in the thicket was a type waiting fulfillment. An animal took the place of a human sinner, who was set free just as David was from the death penalty, even though he committed adultery with Bathsheba and murdered the husband Uriah. Nathan the prophet told David, “You will not die.” The death penalty was waiting for the moment when John the Baptist pointed at Jesus and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” Jesus is the fulfillment of every animal sacrifice ever offered. Application Worship God More than anything, wonder, and worship God at the depths of the riches of His wisdom and knowledge. I have shown you fourteen of fifteen types, and you could probably find fifteen more. These patterns are set out so that you, a sinner, 4000 years after Abraham and Moriah, 2000 years after Christ, can identify Jesus as your personal Savior — God’s iris scan. Nobody else in history fits this pattern. He is the only one. Worship God for that. Trust in Christ for Salvation You may not know much about the Gospel. Or you may know all of these things have never committed yourself to Christ, never yielded to the claim of God on your life, never come to grips with the fact that you are a sinner and that you deserve to die and go to hell. If you do not want to go to hell, you need a substitute to drink the cup of God’s wrath in your place. There is one available. For God made him, Christ, who knew no sin to be sin for you, so that in him, Christ, you might become the righteousness of God. Meditate on these things. Think about them. Deepen your sense of the Gospel. Do You Identify With Any of These Situations? Are you discouraged? Renew the joy of your salvation by thinking what God has done for you. Is your faith weak or shaken? Renew your faith by hearing the message again. Let it be strong again. Are you struggling with besetting sin? If the Son sets you free, you are truly free. You are no longer a slave to sin if you are a child of God. Shake off the cords and walk as a free man, a free woman. You do not need to do that sin ever again. Stand firm in the day of temptation. Are you afraid to obey God in some difficult path of obedience? Follow in the footsteps of your father, Abraham, who was willing to lay down his son Isaac in obedience to God. Are you skeptical about the truth of Scripture? Let skepticism be dispelled when you see these kinds of patterns woven throughout a document like the Old Testament. Finally, are you fearful of sickness and death? Be liberated from fear of sickness and death through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
