Entrepreneurs often need capital. Author and founder Steve Distante has a solution. The Private Investor Network (PIN) is an alchemic playground for both seasoned entrepreneurs ready to invest in new ideas and relatively new entrepreneurs who have the ideas but need capital. PIN allows entrepreneurs to play the ultimate game of entrepreneurship with a live business by investing. On the flip side, investable entrepreneurs will be able to find experienced entrepreneurs to back their businesses. PIN was created to make the painful process of raising capital and tracking those investments easier on everyone.

This week, we're doing something a bit different outside of our typical interview format. This is a recap of New York Climate Week. I'll share some of my impressions and you'll hear from folks like Vice President Al Gore, California Senator Henry Stern, several friends, and fellow climate travelers. You'll hear some segments from sessions I attended and sometimes it might sound like you're actually there in a room full of people. If you hear an occasional cough or something, try to just think of it as getting closer to the experience of being there without any risk of coming home with COVID.Over 75,000 people kicked off the week by taking to the streets for the Climate March on September 17th. Over the ensuing week, thousands of people from around the world joined over 585 official Climate Week sessions and likely as many unofficial ones. I kicked off the week in a somewhat surreal way. I work for a company called NationSwell. We're an executive membership network and advisory that helps sustainability and other leaders take on bigger bets and be more successful. We were invited to bring some NationSwell members like Michael Komori, Chief Sustainability Officer of Starbucks, and joined Al Gore and other climate leaders in ringing the NASDAQ bell on Monday morning – which felt like a fitting start, as a question on everyone's minds is: “If capitalism is up for the challenge, will corporations lead the transformation needed to cut emissions?”In today's episode, we're hearing from:[1:34] Adam Lake, Climate Week NYC Lead of the Climate Group[2:34] Bonnie Gurry, Co-Founder of GreenPortfolio[5:15] Alex Wright Gladstein, Founder of Sphere[6:48] Nyla Mabro, New York Chapter of New Energy Nexus[7:18] Tom Chi, Founder of At One Ventures[8:54] Kirsten Snow Spalding, VP of the Investor Network at Ceres[10:45] Former US Vice President Al Gore[19:29] VP Al Gore on Climate TRACE[12:59] VP Al Gore on the state of climate progress[20:56] Katie Rae, CEO & Manager Partner of The Engine[22:51] Jeff Johnson, Managing Partner of Temasek[24:03] Clay Dumas, Founding Partner of Lowercarbon Capital[25:44] Clay Dumas on the unique opportunity for climate founders today[27:06] Ian Samuels, Founder & Managing Partner of New System Ventures[28:09] Colin le Duc, Founding Partner of Generation Investment Management[33:43] Dr. Vanessa Chan, Chief Commercialization Officer for the US Department of Energy and Director of the

She discusses the successful path she followed in her post-military career in entrepreneurship and being a venture capitalist. Emily also emphasizes the importance of creating a space where service academy graduates and the entrepreneurial community can deeply connect, listen, learn, and ultimately support each other.-------------“I think you have to know yourself when you're transitioning to know who you are and what you like. And, I hope that all the work we've done up until that point prepares us for that. So knowing yourself and who you are is really important because you have to be careful that you don't choose something based off of other people's expectations of what you should do. From his service as a Naval Intelligence Officer to an MBA from the University of Chicago to becoming an investor in early-stage startups in healthcare tech, frontier tech, logistics, and marketplaces, Sherman Williams has had an interesting career. Now he's also helping other U.S. Service Academy (USNA, USMA, USAFA, USCGA and USMMA) grads to invest as well. Many veterans want to get into entrepreneurship, but don't know how to access a network to help them learn and grow. The Academy Investor Network invests in veteran-led startups (as well as civilian-led startups) that focus on “dual-use technology,” or tech that has both commercial and government purposes. Or as Sherman puts it, “technologies that help make our country safer, operate more efficiently, and have a strong commercial use case.”Listen for Sherman's take on how technologies like this can have both civilian and military use cases, and how veterans can thrive in entrepreneurship. Oh, and definitely listen for David and Sherman's brief but delightful discussion of reggae. Follow Sherman Williams on Twitter @vc_sherman See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

When what might’ve seemed like a good deal suddenly looks like a terrible deal, how do you renegotiate to regain your advantage? Chris Arnold, one of our coaching students, found himself stuck on a recent deal when the condition of the house told a different story after he’d already agreed on a price. If you’ve given yourself enough breathing room to account for a change in the condition of a home, then negotiating a more fair price isn’t too hard. But what if you just can’t agree to meet in the middle? And what if your seller is bulldozing your best efforts? I talk with Chris about how to start from a position of strength. When you have to reconsider because of one of the 3 Rs, resale value, repairs, and rents, it’s important for you to come to the table with solid numbers. And if you get into a heated disagreement over the price, relying on the numbers can protect your reputation as well.Listen carefully to how Chris and I break down where the negotiations could’ve gone bad, and my tips for how he could do better next time. It can be easy to get carried away in the back and forth of a conversation, especially when there’s a lot of money on the line. But you really want to protect your relationships while also protecting your profits. You’re running a business after all.Practicing with a coach can help you smooth out the edges of your negotiating techniques. I hope listening to this exchange helps you see how you can renegotiate so that you keep your cool while maximizing your profits.   Today we have Brett Danforth, Managing Director of the Wolfpack Investor Network (WIN), and Ghazale Johnston, WIN member/investor, joining us to discuss angel investing. “The Wolfpack Investor Network (WIN) brings together the NC State entrepreneurial community, NC State alumni network, and innovative private companies to empower the businesses that drive our future.” It is operated as a subscription service with direct ties to the University.  The annual membership is $1,500 with no requirement to invest (think of it as a fee to see deal flow with the potential to invest in each company).  As of our interview in September 2019, they have 150 members and 115 members have made at least one investment through the network.  WIN currently has nineteen companies in the portfolio - 15 of those include NCSU graduates in Management and four involved in licensing in technology. Brett Danforth is the Managing Director at Wolfpack Investor Network.  Brett is a graduate of NC State.  Prior to WIN, he worked in financial services/investment banking. Ghazale Johnston also attended NC State and was a Managing Director with Accenture for 20 years. She now serves as the Chief Operating Officer for Daymaker. During the podcast Brett discusses the business model of WIN.  He explains their process of communication to potential investors, and the diligence process.  He also shares how they work with other networks in the triangle area (Duke, Carolina Angel Networks) and explains how people with ties to NC State can become involved with WIN as an investor. Ghazale discusses how she became involved with WIN.  She also shares her experience as a member how she reviews the companies presented by WIN to decide whether or not to invest.  Additionally, we talk through the benefits she finds to being an active member of WIN. Listen to the podcast, the benefits of being a member, and learn how to become a member and the benefits of being a member.  Enjoy!   William Bissett is the owner of and an Investment Advisor Representative of Portus Wealth Advisors, a Registered Investment Adviser. Registration does not imply a certain level of skill or training. Impact investment will be huge, but not necessarily good, says Transform Finance co-founder and Board Chair Morgan Simon, who is passionate about using money to create social justice. Investors controlling $550 million have signed on to her program, she says. “Microfinance leading to huge debt cycles. Wind farms causing land grabs,” are signs of the problem, she says. “ Impact investment is seen as a panacea to the challenges of aid and philanthropy, yet its promise is often unrealized, lacking engagement with and accountability to the people it is intended to serve, at times even harming its intended beneficiaries. Expected to eclipse aid by 10x with over $500B, the field needs principled course-correction to maximize its transformative potential for hundreds of millions of people.” Transform Finance offers three programs designed to help impact investors course-correct: 1. Converting impact investors into social justice advocates: We help investors (family offices, foundations etc.) managing $556 million integrate the TF approach through our Investor Network launched at the White House in 2014. We co-develop tools to deepen impact and ensure accountability, stronger, more relevant metrics, and shared-benefit deal structures. 2. Working with accelerators worldwide to empower entrepreneurs to maximize community benefit: we “train the trainers” to ensure community accountability and shared ownership as common practice. 3. Helping social justice leaders leverage the power of finance: to keep investments accountable as they flow into their communities, and to generate their own revenue-building activity. Our initial trainings of 65 leaders in U.S. serving over 5 million individuals are being replicated from Mexico to Haiti as the only of this kind. Simon has a clear vision to go along with her passion for impact investing done according by her standard. “Transform Finance creates a world where impact investment lives up to its transformative potential. Our multi-stakeholder work ensures that investors deploy capital in the real interest of communities, and that communities can take advantage of finance as a critical tool for social change.” Please consider whether a friend or colleague might benefit from this piece and, if so, share it.
