Luke and Dan form a neighborhood watch (11:30 to skip). Darlington is voted most overrated while Alex obvi takes home the MVP trophy. How much are you paying for the goat milk treatment? Next week we’re starting The Blacktongue Thief by Christopher Buehlman! Special thanks to VOLO for the intro and outro music. The post Ninth House: Part Three first appeared on Don't call it a book club..
The Friends journey into the brutal heart of Christopher Buehlman's The Daughter's War, the grimdark prequel to The Blacktongue Thief. They unpack the stark tonal shift between the two novels—where Buehlman trades snark for sorrow, and swagger for survival. The spotlight falls on Galva, whose stoic presence in The Blacktongue Thief is given heartbreaking depth as her backstory unfolds through war, trauma, and fractured family loyalties. From hive-minded goblins to the emotional cost of legacy, the hosts explore what makes The Daughter's War such a powerful, if punishing, read—and why some readers might not be ready for just how dark this prequel gets. His thoughts were a whirl of concern and confusion. Theo had always been the calm and collected one, but hearing him so panicked had sent Jake into overdrive. He burst through the double doors of the ER, scanning the chaotic scene for Theo. Theo stood near the entrance, his face a mask of desperation. When he saw Jake, he rushed forward, grabbing his arm. "Jake, it's my brother, Clint. Something's terribly wrong. Please, you have to help him!" They sprinted down the hall together, the fluorescent lights blurring overhead. They reached the operating room door, and Jake pushed it open, immediately confronted with the intense scene inside. Nurses and doctors were working frantically around the operating table where Clint lay, his body convulsing as the medical team tried to revive him. Jake's x-ray vision activated instinctively, and he saw it—the shadowy figure from his nightmares, a dark mass clutching Clint's heart. It squeezed and pulsed with malevolent intent, disrupting the rhythm of the organ with every contraction.

Christopher Buehlman, Between Two Fires, is like a horror filled, comedic acid trip. Which is exactly how many describe the Buddy Book Club podcast, so the Buddies were big fans. Between Two Fires puts you in 14th century France, a place of: plague, death, and waging war between angels and demons. This episode had the Buddies questioning three things most people find sacred: God, charity, and sex parties. So sharpen your sword, put your mask back on, and say your Hail Mary's as we jump into this crazy adventure, horror, fantasy novel. It's no secret that 14th Century Europe was not a very fun place to be. Christopher Buehlman's 2012 novel Between Two Fires leans all the way into the hideousness of plague, war, and famine while adding in a heaping helping of medieval horror. Jack and Kate jump into this apocalyptic landscape, which takes them from France to Hell and back again. Does this book reveal the secret origin of the stag party? What even is grimdark? All these questions and more will be explored in this episode of the podcast. The Blacktongue Thief: By Christopher Buehlman Website: https://gobookmart.com “Hardly since The Lies of Locke Lamora have I been so impressed with a fantasy debut... The Blacktongue Thief is a bonafide instant classic, and I sure as hell can't wait to see what Buehlman comes up with next.”―Grimdark Magazine “Readers of epic fantasy novelists, like Tolkien or Brandon Sanderson, will enjoy this journey, which is by turns fun, magical, or terrifying for the travelers. . . . this title is transporting.”―Library Journal (starred review) “Dazzling. I heartily recommend this one.”―Robin Hobb, New York Times bestselling author of the Farseer Trilogy “Wow! Truly outstanding. I can't say enough about how good The Blacktongue Thief is. Damned good stuff.”―Glen Cook, author of The Black Company “A delight from start to finish. Buehlman takes the well-worn tropes of fantasy and weaves them into a new and vibrant tapestry.”―Anthony Ryan, New York Times bestselling author of Blood Song “Fast and fun and filled with crazy magic. I can't wait to see what Christopher Buehlman does next." - Brent Weeks, New York Times bestselling author of the Lightbringer series --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/gobookmart-review/support

In 1982, filmmaker George A. Romero (Night Of The Living Dead) and author Stephen King (IT, Carrie, The Shining), the masters of terror and the macabre, gave us Creepshow, a horror anthology film inspired by the classic EC Comics of the 1950s and it was the most fun we ever had being scared. In 2019, under the guiding hand of executive producer Greg Nicotero (The Walking Dead), Creepshow is back as a six week series streaming exclusively on Shudder. The third episode of Creepshow includes the stories All Hallows Eve and The Man In The Suitcase. All Hallows Eve was directed by John Harrison (Creepshow, Tales From The Crypt, Tales From The Darkside) from a teleplay by John Esposito (From Dusk Till Dawn, The Walking Dead). The Man In The Suitcase was directed by David Bruckner (The Signal) from a teleplay by Christopher Buehlman. The third episode of Shudder's Creepshow premiered on October 10th, 2019 and is available to watch with a subscription to Shudder. Did our hard working crew at the Late Night Fright have fun being scared? Tune in to find out! www.latenightfright.com www.shudder.com
