Kim just wrapped up round two of college tours and her daughter Mia has committed to UCLA's School of Engineering! We thought we would share some of our college search experience to help others that are just getting to this phase of parenting. Episode Highlights It is important to visit various college campuses before you begin the college application process to help your student understand the style and size of campus that they feel most comfortable in It helps to start early during their sophomore or junior year Before you look at a particular school, make sure it is a school that you can afford by researching their tuition, merit scholarship opportunities, and the financial aid calculator Join the Parent Facebook group for the schools they are interested in and this is a great source of information but make sure they are run by the school or parents and not just a data-mining company Try to find hotels that are near the college campus for campus visits because it will give you a better sense of what it would like to be on campus. Graduate Hotels is a great chain to look at as their properties are always close to college campuses and it is now part of Hilton Make sure you drive around the campus and the surrounding neighborhood and think about how they would get to campus if they are flying in from out of state If you want to tour campus, you need to make a reservation to join a group tour and these can fill up far in advance Try to time your visit to when students are on campus and not during their spring break Be prepared to ask questions about food, class size, how hard it is to get into the classes they need, dorms, and campus life You can find dorm room tours on YouTube Be sure to check out the student union and see how busy it is and what the options are. Also pay attention to whether or not it is a swipe or cash system Check out the department buildings where your kid would be taking a lot of classes, the library, and where the dorms are Visiting on the Admitted Students day will give your student a good introduction to campus and campus life and provide an opportunity to connect with other students. Admitted Students day typically takes place during April Be sure to pay the housing deposit early unless your school guarantees housing for freshmen If the school doesn't guarantee housing, look at housing costs in the area When thinking about dates, also look at booking hotels for move in, move out, and parent's weekend Make dinner and brunch reservations during move in and Parents Weekend

Choosing the right college is one of the biggest decisions a student will make. But what if there was a way to explore campuses across the country without ever leaving home? In this episode, I sat down with Alex Boylan, the creator and host of The College Tour, to talk about how the show is changing the way students and families approach the college search. After visiting over 180 college campuses in just four years, Alex definitely knows a thing or two about the process!Instead of relying solely on traditional campus visits, The College Tour gives an inside look at colleges through the eyes of real students, offering a fresh and engaging way to explore potential schools. Plus, we discuss how The College Tour is helping counselors guide students in making more informed decisions about their futures. And for those worried about the financial side of college? What up Fellas!

The College Essay Guy Podcast: A Practical Guide to College Admissions
In today's two-part episode, we're delving into one of the potentially more confusing aspects of what colleges want — “positive character attributes” — which 65.8% of colleges give considerable or moderate importance. In part 1, I'm joined by Tom Bear (VP for Enrollment at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology) and Bob Massa (former chief admissions/enrollment officer at Johns Hopkins University, Dickinson College and Drew University) to discuss: What are these positive character attributes? Why are they important to colleges? How do colleges decide which qualities to seek and how to evaluate for them? How do students show these qualities in their application? Part 2 is with Trisha Ross Anderson, from the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Making Caring Common Project, and we get into: How Making Caring Common helps colleges figure out what they are looking for How some colleges are working to increase access and equity in admissions Advice to parents as they navigate this process with their students Tom Bear has been working in college enrollment since 1987 at a variety of institutions, including as VP for Enrollment at University of Evansville, Senior Director of Enrollment at Notre Dame and now as the VP for Enrollment at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He joined the Character Collaborative in 2017, served as Board Chair and will chair NACAC's Character Focus Initiative. Bob Massa got his Doctorate in Higher Education from Columbia, served as the chief admissions/enrollment officer at Johns Hopkins University, Dickinson College and Drew University and Co- founded the Character Collaborative in 2016. Although he has retired from full-time work after 45 years of campus-based work, he is an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California's online masters program in enrollment management. Trisha Ross Anderson has served on research teams at the Harvard Graduate School of Education for the past 13 years. She's worked with the Making Caring Common (MCC) Project to help write reports including one called Turning the Tide that focuses on reform of the college admission process. She leads MCC's college admissions initiatives with Richard Weissbourd and currently serves on NACAC's Character Focus Initiative Advisory Council. Finishing up the third season of our Haunted College Tour Palooza, Zoey brings us an extra-long episode to talk about the many haunted buildings of the University of Montevallo. Along with the typical southern history of the civil war and enslavement, this school has a history of violence and death paired with a rural, historic college that brings out the ghosts in full force. This episode has a old man ghost looking for his buried treasure, a former Confederate soldier protecting the building in death after he failed to protect it in life, an affectionate but mischievous theater ghost, and a girl who was on fire. All of those, and more, are haunting the various dorms and halls of MU, scaring students ever since the early 1900's. Before we get to the ghosts, Robin brings her Something Southern to talk about 5 of her Hot Takes in reference to the astounding heat that is blasting the South in these last few weeks of August.Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2023/08/29/ep-126-haunted-college-tour-palooza-part-14-university-of-montevalloVisit us on Social Media! On this stop of Haunted Hospitality's annual haunted college tour, we're going to the University of Georgia! Founded in Athens, Georgia in 1795, UGA is a public university with a very famous bulldog, over 30,000 students, and some spooky stories. Expect sightings of a historically inaccurate bride who brings with her either a blessing or a curse, and the ghost of a former Confederate general who can be found either pacing or haunting nightmares while giving off a misogynistic vibe.In this episode, we dive into UGA's most well known ghost stories, as well as some more recent paranormal student experiences. And we can't forget the Demosthenian Literary Society — sorry, we mean the country of Demosthenia. But first, Zoey's here with her Something Spooky: a mini haunted college tour of Wilson Hall at Ohio University.CW: this episode contains mentions of suicide and intimate partner violence.Sources: https://hauntedhospitality.wordpress.com/2023/08/22/ep-125-haunted-college-tour-palooza-part-13-the-university-of-georgiaVisit us on Social Media! Continuing on the Haunted College Train, Zoey brings us Hollins University in Roanoke, Virginia. This school may be small with a student body of about 800, but it has plenty of ghosts to go around. We have the helpful Eliza(Beth) in the theater workshop who helps you find lost items, a friendly nurse ghost in Swannanoa Hall who will check your temperature in the middle of the night, the Runner in Tinker Hall, and Presser Hall. Presser hall has many ghosts, including the ghost of Theodore Presser himself, and a lot of them like to watch you play music, play music themselves, or prevent you from playing music. But don't worry, that's not all. We have seven first person accounts of ghost stories at the end that will have you feeling chills! But first, Robin brings us the first instalment of "This Woman Could Kill You: Folkloric Women Creatures with Violent Tendencies" for her Something Spooky, debuting the bit with the Ogress herself, Baba Yaga.TW: Suicide.
