Today, I am joined by Julia Hildebrand. As part of the award-winning Correctiv team, Julia leads a project called beabee. It is a tool that helps newsrooms turn audiences into engaged communities. Before that, Julia had worked for the social startup ChangeX in Dublin where she developed community-software that allows people to start their own local projects. I met Julia while we both worked for Germany's international broadcaster Deutsche Welle. During that time, she was developing new social media strategies, guidelines and workflows for more user participation.  Julia's expectations of community-journalism is high: “There is so much more potential for civic participation. Community-Journalism for me is a way, to unleash that potential and empower people to improve their own environment.” I am very happy that she agreed to do this interview. We discussed civic participation and in how far journalism can or should foster that. Some key takeaways: beabee is about allowing more people to start local organizations that have journalistic practices and organizing communities at their focus it is all about supporting the smallest newsrooms building a community means having to have patience. building a community is hard and hands-on work: it goes beyond just providing stories. It encompasses working together, organizing workshops and being open to co-creation journalism can help increase engagement in local communities and tracking impact can be done by looking at voting turnouts it is about creating safe public digital spaces and owning the infrastructure, owning the data we need more players that are not driven by profit team-building and motivation techniques include taking time - it is imperative that everyone knows what the goals are - making sure that everyone know what's going on stand-ups in the morning - having that little connection in the morning including a ritual "reasons to be cheerful" - sharing sth more personal, sth positive invest in bringing people together More links: Beabe Correctiv Bristol Cable  Rheinhausen Community Project Campfire Festival Barcamp Bottropp Welcome to the international edition of my podcast Rath Up. Greg Little has been a journalist since his first efforts at a small newspaper while he attended junior high school. His career has spanned five decades, winning a number of awards for reporting that helped an Indian reservation in Montana stop violent crime to stopping illegal dumping of sewage sludge in Tennessee. He has worked for large companies and family owners and spent time teaching journalism. Today he currently lives in Mariposa, California, with his wife, Nicole where they own the Mariposa Gazette, the oldest continually published weekly newspaper in the state of California.  Greg recently published a book called “-30- Why Small-Town American Print Journalism is Anything But Dead,” a book he describes as an “outline on how the road of journalism can sometimes be bumpy. But along the way, the business of small-town journalism can also be rewarding.” The book also speaks to why local journalism is so important in America and why it must survive. Little gives real-world advice to up and coming journalists on how they can pursue a rewarding career that can make a big difference in the communities they serve. In this episode of “E&P Reports,” Publisher Mike Blinder speaks with Greg Little about why he wrote the book, his opinions on the future of community journalism, and what advice he would give any budding journalist who wishes to enter the industry.   Related Links:  “-30- Why Small-Town American Print Journalism is Anything But Dead” on Amazon.com: https://amzn.to/3xv5CG6 Mariposa (CA) Gazette: https://www.mariposagazette.com

Since the year 2,000, over 250 small, locally owned newsrooms have shuttered their operations, leaving communities without a locally centered news source that covers micro-local news such as church fish frys, local school board activity or boy scout chili dinners. Larger news outlets traditionally don't or won't cover those events because they're more about "if it bleeds, it leads," ratings centered news. The Northeast News is an award winning, Community Journalism outlet that has served Kansas City's Historic Northeast community since 1932.

The group kept growing until it reached the size limit.“I knew that there was a need for information. But I also knew that the traditional media outlets weren't providing all of the information that the community needed because they are obviously understaffed and underpaid," Félix said. "They were working remotely without an understanding of how to work like that.”She saw the need for stories and information during the pandemic in Spanish, so she launched Conecta Arizona as a journalism experiment, bringing on experts and answering questions. Traditional news organisations are finding new ways to deliver content in the face of diminishing revenues and increased competition from online providers. At the same time they are increasingly coming under attack from politicians across the spectrum for perceived bias. The end result is that trust in the media as a whole has been undermined. Is there a danger that consumers will shop around for a news source which just tells them what they want to hear? So, how can we support independent and trustworthy news at a national and local level in Wales? Can Wales’ politicians and government be a strong voice within the UK for regulation which protects citizens from disinformation? And it was the first time that I had ever been in a place where I felt reluctant and kind of scared to tell people that I was a journalist. I wasn't there undercover. I was there to interview people. It made me nervous to be walking around with my notebook out because there were so many chants against journalists," says Jean Guerrero, author of Hatemonger: Stephen Miller, Donald Trump, and the White Nationalist Agenda. In today's world journalism has become a risky business. Newspapers are closing up shop every day in light of the digital age and in many ways it seems the profession is under attack both figuratively and literally. Reporters are being gunned down in newsrooms and the public is becoming more and more suspicious of the profession as the result of the concept of fake news. Bob Blubaugh is the editor of the Carroll County Times in Maryland and has been in the journalism field first as a sports reporter and now as an editor for over 20 years. He is experiencing these concerns firsthand and yet remains committed to the idea of community journalism and the important role it continues to play in our lives.

(If you want to watch a version of this podcast and see Adam's slides, visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9m41rcgaEw) The crisis in the news industry has in many ways been felt most acutely at the local level where there are no economies of scale and smaller profit margins. In a region like the north east – or the south west - this creates the potential for a serious democratic deficit. While mainstream local media has been struggling to cope with the challenge presented by the internet, community news organiations – sometimes in print, sometimes online – are blossoming. From the Medocino Voice in California, updating residents around the clock about the spread of wildfires, to the Bristol Cable’s investigations into local council actions against rough sleepers, grassroots local journalism initiatives are emerging to fill the gaps. * This podcast is brought to you by The Civic Journalism Lab, a forum for professional, student and community journalists in the north east of England to meet, learn and collaborate. The Social Network Show welcomes Dr. Jennifer Cox to the March 10, 2015 episode. Do you have a website or blog that you have to post to regularly? Are you expected to do a lot of online writing for your job but have no formal training on how to do this? If the answer is yes, this is an important show to listen to. Dr. Jennifer Cox, who teaches journalism and public relations at Salisbury University shares the vital points that we need to know for online writing. For example, did you know that it is important to put the most important points at the top of the article and least important at the bottom? In this show you will hear about what should be written in the first sentence; the importance of concise writing; the rules of feature writing; what we need to know about the State laws regarding collecting data; and very importantly, the rules of ethics for journalists. To learn more about the code of ethics for journalists, Dr. Cox suggests looking at The Society of Professional Journalists. Jennifer Brannock Cox earned a B.A. from Appalachian State University as a double major in Journalism and Public Relations. She also acquired an M.A. from the University of Alabama in Community Journalism, and a Ph.D. from the University of Florida in Mass Communication. Her specialties include New Media/Online Journalism, Newsroom Culture, and Social Media. Cox spent several years as a reporter in newsrooms throughout Florida where she gained experience covering multiple beats for print and online publications. She now teaches journalism and public relations classes at Salisbury University, where she incorporates new and social media techniques alongside traditional newswriting exercises.
