Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.  Today we return to one of our earlier subjects: Ryan Gosling! Our B-Sides are The Ides of March, Gangster Squad, Only God Forgives, and First Man. Our guest is our dear friend Cory Everett, creator of Cinephile: A Card Game!  We talk about Gosling's television career as a young man, his quick rise to stardom, and surprise nomination for Half Nelson fairly early on in his run. He's been searching for his lifelong directorial muse. There's been Derek Cianfrance, Nicolas Winding Refn, and Damien Chazelle. Will he ever find the one? There's that iconic Rachel McAdams kiss at the MTV Movie Awards, the acceleration of his “coolness” after the success of The Notebook all the way through the release of Drive, and that iconic, ever-changing voice of his. There's also those beautiful, weird Gosling eyes. There's also discussion about George Clooney as a filmmaker, his first film and Charlie Kaufman dislike of it, and his progression (regression?) as a director. The merits of Winding Refn are also debated. We all remember when William Friedkin ridiculed Nicolas Winding Refn for calling Only God Forgives a masterpiece. And if you have not as of yet, you should watch the documentary My Life Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn.

We're swapping Chimera viruses for jazz-fueled chaos and slow-motion gunfights for full-blown cinematic mayhem as we discuss: How Babylon might be the most Damien Chazelle movie that ever Damien Chazelle'd. Does this film capture the magic and madness of early Hollywood—or is it just chaotic noise? Is Manny Torres a true dreamer… or just a wide-eyed bystander to Hollywood's self-destruction... or is he a corrupted soul that we overlook? Apparently there's a rule about taking Class-A drugs with company (well, in Act I anyways) How large is the demand for sweeping, three-hour epics about the birth of movies? Which Babylon character we'd most likely be—and who's definitely channeling peak "trainwreck energy"  Is this an underappreciated masterpiece—or an overindulgent fever dream of excess? Is Babylon a love letter to cinema or a cautionary tale wrapped in champagne and elephant dung? We've got questions about giant parties, sudden snake fights, drug-fueled breakdowns, and how much elephant content is too much. At what point is the film in on the joke it's making and at what point does that film become the joke? We're joined by BFF of the BFE: James DeGuzman who tells us why this film is so much more than the punchline film critics have mmade it out to be Whether Babylon is the Best Film Ever.

Born and raised in Santa Barbara, CA, Native American (his grandfather on his father's side was full Cherokee and his grandmother on his mother's side was Mexican Indigenous) actor and stuntman, Skyler Bible, has become a familiar face whose loveable and distressed characters have been seen around the world at international festivals, streaming, and on the big screen.  Best known for his role as 'Fixer' in Star Wars: The Book of Boba Fett, Bible is full of creativity and passion for his craft and has dipped his toes in a variety of roles. Whether it's a begrudging officer starring with actor/director Jim Cummings' in the 2020 Orion Pictures' horror comedy The Wolf of Snow Hollow, or portraying Astronaut Richard Gordon (Apollo 12) next to Ryan Gosling in Damien Chazelle's First Man, he is no stranger to the spotlight. In Fox's 911: Lonestar, a college "athlete" that thinks it's the right thing to ski on a highway, not weighing the potential life altering risks, and Ryan Murphy's Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, portraying a real-life victim Richard Guerrero, in a story that opened the world's eyes to the evils that people are capable of.    You can watch on YouTube at Meisterkhan.com (Please Subscribe)

Tune in to find out what we thought of this one and why Mark loves Damien Chazelle. Emilio, Madeline, and Julian are joined by drummer Rob Mitzner to begin a new episode cycle on films featuring winners of the Best Supporting Actor or Actress Oscars, with a "View-nanimous" entry on director Damien Chazelle's 2014 breakthrough film, "Whiplash." Starring Miles Teller and J.K. Simmons, the latter of whom won the requisite Oscar, the film memorably portrays student drummer Andrew Neiman's struggle to impress his autocratic band instructor, Terence Fletcher, and the group filter their own experiences as musicians through their aptitude for cinematic detail to assess the film's spectrum of musical and emotional realism. While "Whiplash" was a hit upon release and highly lauded during awards season, it has always been polarizing among musicians, and some of those differing views are articulated in this very conversation. Plus, did anyone in the group ever have a teacher like Fletcher? Is Miles Teller's drumming accurate? And how do we interpret that unforgettable ending? If you enjoy our podcast, please rate and review us on your podcast platform of choice.  This really helps us find new listeners and grow!Follow Rob Mitzner on IG @robmitznerdrums, and visit his website, robmitzner.com, to keep up with his live performances and purchase a copy of his book, "Drumming in a Band: Stuff You Can Use."Follow us on IG and TikTok: @sleeplesscinematicpodSend us an email at sleeplesscinematicpod@gmail.comOn Letterboxd? It's a new year, and Kicking the Seat resolves to change your tune!La La Land has its fans, but Damien Chazelle's 2016 Oscar also-ran has been widely dismissed for being syrupy, derivative Hollywood nonsense. In today's episode, Ian and Jeff talk about why the film deserves a second look, especially in light of a recent 4K restoration of Jacques Demy's 1964 Palme d'Or-winning musical masterpiece, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. Both movies center on young lovers with big dreams who profess their frustrations and fantasies through song. And both take a darker, decidedly non-traditional approach to resolving their characters' conflicts--despite the candy-dipped, whimsical surroundings. So put on some jazz, pour a steely Chardonnay, and raise a glass to the ones who dream...of turning more people on to these daring and delightful movies!Subscribe, like, and comment on Kicking the Seat here on YouTube, and check us out at:kickseat.comXBlueSkyInstagramFacebookShow Links Watch the La La Land (2016) trailer.Watch the Umbrellas of Cherbourg (1964) trailer.Keep up with Jeff York's criticism and caricatures at: The Establishing Shot and Pipeline Artists!Watch Ian and Aaron Christensen's review of Repulsion (Catherine Deneuve's next film, after Umbrellas).

Editors Dean Zimmerman ACE and Shane Reid DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE editors, Dean Zimmerman ACE and Shane Reid are the "buddies" in the cutting room of what is shaping up to be the biggest, R-rated buddy movie of all time.  Zimmerman joined this film with two other Shawn Levy / Ryan Reynolds films to his credit, but it would be Mrs. Pool (Blake Lively) who would be Shane Reid's connection into the "Merc With a Mouth" franchise. Deadpool's peaceful existence comes crashing down in DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE when the Time Variance Authority recruits him to help safeguard the multiverse.  He soon unites with his would-be pal, Wolverine, to complete the mission and save his world from an existential threat. DEAN ZIMMERMAN, ACE DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE finds Dean collaborating once again with director and longtime friend, Shawn Levy.  The two have been working together for over twenty years on projects like the NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM franchise and a little series called STRANGER THINGS.  More recently, the two have joined forces with Ryan Reynolds for FREE GUY (2021) and THE ADAM PROJECT (2022).   Zimmerman and Levy are currently working on the much-anticipated final season of STRANGER THINGS.  Dean's father, Don Zimmerman, is a highly accomplished editor in his own right.   (yes, I totally hacked this from the write-up on Dean I did for THE ADAM PROJECT) SHANE REID As a partner of the award-winning post house Exile Edit, Shane has been nominated for, and won, multiple awards for his work in the commercial space with top brands including Apple, Adidas, BMW, Hennessy, Audi and the Olympics.  He quickly became one of the most trusted short form editors, working with such directors as Damien Chazelle, Terrence Malick, Andrew Dominik, Jason Reitman, Craig Gillespie, Blake Lively, John Hillcoat & Chloe Zhao. He has also cut multiple music videos for Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, Florence + The Machine and Kamasi Washington. In 2018, Reid edited on the film A Hidden Life for director Terrence Malick.  He recently cut the short film I'm on Fire for director Michael Spiccia which premiered at the 2022 Toronto and Clermont-Ferrand International Festivals, as well as Sony Pictures' GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZERN EMPIRE. Damien Chazelle first started seriously considering a film about old Hollywood back in 2009, long before he made La La Land. And even when the writer/director had channelled his energies into that film, he still had Babylon in mind: a hugely ambitious, expensive, three hour film that needed an R-rating! In the case of Everybody's Talking About Jamie, the challenge with the hit stage show was bringing it to the big screen at some scale - in spite of a truncated budget. Then there was the small matter of a pandemic getting in the way too... Stories of both are told in this episode... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
