Messy Family Podcast : Catholic conversations on marriage and family

'Cause I love you more than you could know And your heart, it grows every time it breaks I know that it might sound strange But I wish you pain  - “Wish You Pain” by Andy Grammar   Summary Every parent wants to keep their kids safe, but is it possible to keep them “too safe”?  In this podcast episode we dive into the overwhelming cult of safety-ism, which makes keeping your child from all pain and suffering an idol. Children are really “antifragile” - meaning that they need to have an appropriate amount of stress physically, mentally and emotionally to be able to become resilient.  Over-protecting and keeping kids from physical or emotional pain only makes them more anxious and risk-averse.  We have lots of examples of giving kids freedom, and the results aren't always what you think!  Like so much of parenting, you need to keep in mind the stage of development your child is in to be able to expose them to appropriate risks.  You don't let your 12 yr old wander down a dark alley, but you should let them go into the grocery store alone.  Listen in for some encouragement as well as tips and tricks to not keeping your kids safe, but making them strong!     Key Takeaways Do all you can to keep kids in Discover Mode.  Exploring is what kids do and it will keep them curious and confident. Don't keep them safe, make them strong. Children will get hurt, get sick, get disappointed, cry with frustration…. Because they are human!   Attachment to parents is key to give kids a secure base Fearful parenting keeps kids close too much and for too long Children need play-based childhood.    Couple Discussion Questions How were we raised?  Were we raised in a home that was in Discovery Mode or Defend Mode?  Assess our family right now in light of safety vs. appropriate risk.  How are our children being raised?  What can we do to improve our family's Discovery Mode for the long term benefit of our children?

Welcome back to the podcast! This week, we're diving into an essential concept for the new year: moving from defense mode to discovery mode in our brains. I share insights from one of my favorite books, How to Have a Good Day by Caroline Webb, breaking down how our automatic and deliberate systems influence our responses to stress. We'll explore practical ways to shift out of the fight, flight, or freeze mindset and into a space of curiosity and anticipation for good things. Join me as we unpack how embracing discovery mode can help us live intentionally and create a more rewarding life.

Happy Holidays! So, how are you feeling about this year coming to an end?  There continues to be so much change. In my last solo cast of 2023, I share the consensus of what I have experienced in 2023 along with many I have talked with, coached, sat with over coffee, read online, heard on podcasts, and intuitively felt most of the year. The intuitive answer is the big shift. Life will never be the same. Now three years into this global energetic shift, we must quiet ourselves enough and more often to listen for answers to our needs from our intuition. We are being called to listen even more. Allow the logic and ego mind to do its thing when you need to implement the inner guidance to begin taking action, but not a minute sooner. I share three practices to support strengthening your intuition and discuss how our inner guidance system, our inner GPS, is our sixth sense that we were born with but most were not taught how to use it. Society and collective consciousness have not evolved enough to make that change – BUT we are on the way with all the excellent teachers today insisting we learn what comes natural to us and for us. I take you through a current story of when I patiently waited for that guidance and what came of that was my dream come true. This and more weaves the story of how Sogno Toscano Retreat came to be and I give you all the glorious details in taking the adventure of a lifetime in Tuscany Italy.   Links from the show: Use my calendly link to schedule a 30 min connection call to ask questions about the retreat and talk about your next chapter. https://calendly.com/successcoach-marladiann/connection Early rate ends Dec 28. One of the best voices in rock has been used to describe J.R. Richards. He's the original singer of Dishwalla, one of my favorite bands to emerge in the 90s. Richards has sold millions of records, written some chart-topping hits and has toured globally. Perhaps his most noteworthy accomplishment was writing "Counting Blue Cars," which he performed and recorded with Dishwalla. That song won the Billboard "Rock Song of the Year" award in 1996 and two ASCAP awards for "Song of The Year" in 1997 and 1998.   Richards has also recorded a few solo albums and is on the cusp of releasing his next album, the 10th in his career. I only recently became acquainted with his solo work because I was looking for an acoustic cover of "Counting Blue Cars" for an acoustic 80s/90s covers project. I found an acoustic version, but when I saw the singer on that acoustic version, it occurred to me that it wasn't the original guy. Down the rabbit hole, I went. I don't know who the new singer is. He's good, but I'm definitely partial to Richards' voice. So I found his solo work, website and lots of other info about him that I never knew. I loved Dishwalla, but I'm not what you'd call a super fan. I lost track of the band after they stopped releasing new stuff.   But I am a big fan, so I was stoked when JR agreed to an interview. Speaking with him was kinda weird. The time passed so quickly! I spend most of our time nerding out with him about e-commerce, the importance of email lists and other topics I typically pursue on the podcast. I ended up with several questions that we never got to. The other thing is that he's a 'normal' person, a dad and husband; a very talented normal person, but just a guy.    I don't know what I expected, but I enjoyed speaking with him. Richards is as kind and humble as any other indie musician I've ever had on the podcast. We talked about Dishwalla, his forthcoming record, email marketing, e-commerce, touring, adapting to changes in music, Spotify Discovery Mode, SOME of his work as a producer, what he's got cooking in the near future, and more.    Find everything JR is up to at JRRrichardsMusic.com. Spotify's new Discovery Mode feature is a powerful tool for independent artists looking to expand their reach on the platform. With this feature, artists can promote their music to a wider audience by prioritizing their songs in the algorithm that generates personalized playlists for users. By paying a small fee, independent artists can boost the visibility of their tracks, increasing the chances of being discovered by potential fans. This is especially beneficial for artists who may not have the same level of exposure as established acts on the platform. With Discovery Mode, they can get a foot in the door and start building their audience, leading to more streams, more followers, and more opportunities for success. Between the company's new, Tiktok-inspired interface, its Black Mirror-esque personal AI DJ tool, and the expansion of its Discovery Mode program offering artists more exposure in exchange for a lower royalty rate, the event offered plenty of food for thought about the state of cultural curation — and musical gatekeeping — in 2023.Should we believe tech companies when they say they are democratizing cultural creation and distribution — or is all that utopian language just a smoke screen for the ways they are slowly rendering human curators (like DJs, record store clerks, A&Rs, and music critics) obsolete? How did the figure of the musical “gatekeeper” get such a bad rap in the first place? And is it time, as musician Damon Krukowski (Galaxie 500, Damon & Naomi) suggests in an excellent new essay for Dada Drummer, for us to consider them in a new light?

Tim Westergren was the former founder and CEO of Pandora, and helped build the current digital music landscape. He left the company in 2017, frustrated by “the music industrial complex vortex”, and last year launched a new startup called Sessions – a live-streaming platform for emerging and established artists. He says Sessions does something unique: it spends its own money to bring in viewers for performing artists, and gives artists a direct connection, and all the data, on their fans. Tim talks to Music Ally editor Joe Sparrow about how he hopes the music industry can work differently, and how the business model of the big streaming platforms, he believes, is not the right path for artists. He also discusses Spotify's controversial Discovery Mode – where artists receive a lower per-stream rate in exchange for exposure.

Two weeks after my trip to Jacksonville, I hope you had a great time and listened to my latest episode in Spanish. On today’s episode, I brought some news on a latest to be published book, musicians selling their catalog music, and Spotify new Discovery Mode model. WARNING: I will criticize this new business formula (for me is it a new way of using payola). My guest, thanks to the wonderful recommendation done by Michella Messina, is Irene Jalenti. She is a Howard University and Peabody Institute (John Hopkins University) alumni in Jazz performance and singing. Irene is an Italian singer, arranger, composer, multi-instrumentalist, and a joyous person. In this conversation she shows her Italian sassiness on multiple occasions. I will not give any spoilers on that. The first song was Mas que Nada composed by Brazilian singer Jorge Ben and the last one is Here There and Everywhere composed by Lennon-McCartney. Spotify Makes changes with New Pay for Influence Discovery Mode that has become a controversial issue. ‘Discovery Mode’ works by letting a label or artist identify a track that they want prioritized, with that track then played in listeners’ personalized Auto play or Radio feeds. By opting in, they agree to being paid a lower recording royalty rate for streams in those personalized sessions (in Radio and Autoplay). If they opt out or a song doesn't perform well, Spotify will remove it immediately from discovery and not give that track a chance to recover or be discovered. An announcement suggesting that artists can choose to be paid less per stream for their tracks to be played in personalized feeds couldn’t have come at a worse time for SPOT in terms of its reputation amongst the wider artist community. Just last week, Spotify was issued with an open letterfrom the Union of Musicians and Allied Workers demanding better payment and claiming that the streaming platform “encourages labels and management companies to pay for plays on the platform”. “The practice amounts to payola,” added the letter. “It is unacceptable and must be stopped.” Unsurprisingly, Discovery Mode immediately drew criticism from artists. David Lowery, for example, suggested via a tweet that “This a form of payola or sponsored social media post. It is not necessarily illegal but the tracks would need to be labeled”.
