Some of us don't stumble across ready-made communities. Some of us have to build them - and today's guest knows a thing or two about that.Today I am joined by the one and only Alexis Lee – Founder of Style Me Sunday, author of 'Feeling Myself', community leader (Black Enough, Healing Myself), psychotherapist in training and apparently, the only person who could get me talking about sex without wanting to crawl under the table. We dive into it all — the stuff nobody taught us growing up. From convent school guilt, to figuring out what love really means later in life, to how shutting down the sex chat only fuels more shame. We also get into how ADHD messes with body image, self-esteem, intimacy... and basically, how it all ties back to connection and community. From setting up a spontaneous fishing community (yep, you read that right) to navigating the chaos of daily life, Alexis shares her honest take on what it actually means to live authentically.

How are you feeling yourself today? Remy and Emily start off with a new segment, Feeling Myself, about—you guessed it—the little things we do to feel good about ourselves. On today's agenda? Skincare. Remy talks about growing up with a dermatologist for a dad, her experience with accutane, and how she doesn't really have a skincare routine (except for sunscreen—never forget the sunscreen). Emily, however, has her system down pat and gives us the rundown on both her morning and night time routines. This transitions into today's listener-submitted Dear DST, all about the nuances of tanning. And yes, this includes unpacking the all-too popular “if you can't tone it, tan it” mentality. New York singer/songwriter Nick Hakim has been producing records of gently psychedelic soul here for almost a decade. Occasionally, he drops the gentle psychedelia in favor of something more obviously trippy – it happens several times on his newest album, Cometa. (The title is Spanish for “kite,” although the American-born Hakim sings in English.) He is one of those singers whose voice rarely seems to rise above a whisper – and though he's probably sick of being compared to the ill-starred but still-mythic English folkie Nick Drake, Hakim's songs can sound a little like Nick Drake fronting a psychedelic soul band from the early 70s. Nick Hakim and his band perform these songs in-studio. (-John Schaefer) Set list: Vertigo, Happen, Feeling Myself
Today's Song of the Day is "Feeling Myself" from Nick Hakim's album, COMETA, out now.

Natalie Lee, a social media presence, content creator and now author. Nat speaks up about things that things that a lot of us face as women from the way we feel about our bodies and impeccable beauty standards, to social pressures, sex and shame and today is no different. She has just released her debut book…Feeling Myself, an honest read that is really relatable, extremely emotional and a book that I think every woman should read. Welcome to Season 4 Episode 1! In this week's episode, I chat with Natalie Lee, a content creator, author, podcast host and public speaker on a liberating road of disruption to challenge and help you shed your shame. Following childhood trauma, Natalie was conditioned to view her body, sex and herself in a certain way which led to her not feeling complete and shameful. Natalie talks to us today about her powerful journey to pleasure and self-acceptance as we discuss the book she has written, Feeling Myself. I make no secret about how much I love this book and how I think it's a must-read for all women. Natalie shares with us about subjects that we possibly do not normally talk about with our friends and loved ones. We talk about the importance of questioning our own views around sex and how we can break any negative cycles we hold as well as how we can have important conversations about sexuality and sex within our households. This is a conversation that I know is going to have an impact. Key takeaways: Therapy can be hugely powerful in your healing journey It was important to consider how her experience had conditioned her and how she could start to make better choices Sex can be pleasurable She introduces us to ethical porn from a female gaze by creator Erika Lust Women don't connect with masturbation because they are told it's shameful and dirty How masturbation can be free and pleasurable and teach us so much about our own bodies Women have been conditioned to act as foot soldiers of misogynists and we need to be aware and break free from this People often assume that the default sexuality is heterosexuality How can we have conversations about sex and sexuality in our household to raise awareness within our family About Natalie: Natalie Lee began started her blog, Style Me Sunday, in July 2012. It began as a fashion blog but soon evolved as she changed and started to open up about other things like body confidence, mental health and her healing process. For a decade she has grown her platform from a blog to a brand, and now reaches women across various different mediums. Her book ‘Feeling Myself' is available to buy now. We need to ditch the shame around sex. Everyone's good with that, yeah? If that hasn't convinced you, Natalie Lee - aka Style Me Sunday - will almost certainly do a better job. She chats to Mick about the absolute joy of feeling herself and her aptly-titled new book, Feeling Myself. And while we're on the subject of feelings, Hannah gets dangerously close to having some when she chats to Theresa Heskins, director and co-writer of a new play, Tom, Dick & Harry, based on the true story of the "great" escape from Stalag Luft III. And we stick with the history in Rated or Dated. Of course we don't, we're watching The Untouchables. My guest today is a 42-year-old mum of two on a mission to kick sexual shame into touch. Natalie Lee was just like many of the rest of us. Not mad keen on her body, not as familiar with orgasm as she'd have liked to be and, by her own admission, a latecomer to masturbation. Hands up if that sounds familiar. (And don't worry, no-one can see you!)That is until she had her daughters and realised that if she wanted them to grow up free of sexual shame, she needed to sort out her own first. After a long, hard look at herself, Natalie started her body- and sex-positive instagram account @stylemesunday and took her first semi-naked ‘this is my body, like it or lump it' photo. Now, 110k followers later, she has shared her own journey to sexual freedom in Feeling Myself (clue's in the name), in the hope it will help you start yours.Nat joined me in a full and frank (!) conversation about finding the confidence to end her marriage, how she overcame self-loathing, sexual experimentation, why it's so important to talk to our children about sex (no matter how much they wish you wouldn't!), embracing pansexuality and why the jeans don't fit you, not the other way aroundYou can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at Bookshop.org, including Feeling Myself by Natalie Lee and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me!And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including transcripts of the podcast, please join The Shift community. Shame is a feeling that often comes paired with sex, and is an emotion that as a therapist I regularly hear people describe that sex makes them feel. This is why I really wanted to host a conversation around the relationship between sex and shame, where we think it comes from and what we think is maintaining it. Sex is so much more than just the act of what we are doing, and it holds meaning for us which is why when we view what we are doing sexually as shameful, or feel shame around our sexual lives, that it can start to impact us in other ways such as self confidence, self-esteem and relationships. My guest for this conversation is the brilliant Natalie Lee aka StyleMeSunday who has just authored her memoir and manifesto on sexual shame Feeling Myself https://www.waterstones.com/book/feeling-myself/natalie-lee/9781785043864 . The book is incredibly honest, something that Natalie and I discuss as going up against shame and challenging the feeling that it should keep us silent. Natalie digs deep into her relationship with sex and shame, and talks about how when she realised how much it was holding her back, that she then started to get curious and explore the process of freeing herself from some of that shame. Natalie began her career as a midwife before starting her blog, Style Me Sunday, in July 2012. Over nearly a decade, she has grown her platform from a blog to a brand, and now reaches women across various different mediums. Trigger Warnings: mention of self harm and disordered eating. In this episode, influencer and author, Natalie Lee (aka @stylemesunday) and I explore how ADHD can affect our feelings of self worth. Natalie always struck me as someone with an abundance of self love, and yet as we chatted about our ADHD diagnoses last year, it turned out we've both struggled with low self esteem. Natalie shares how a sense of shame was tied to the challenges she experienced with daily tasks, relationships and how she felt in her own skin, and how she's taking back control with dance. We talk about meds, how diagnosis can reframe so much of what we felt were personal flaws and Natalie's tools for dealing with rejection sensitivity disorder. Natalie also reveals what she's most excited about now, as she works on the connection between her body and mind. • IME/UBU MONDAY o We are talking Relationships and boundaries for Week 12 of the IME Reverse Your Insulin Resistance Challenge o What do relationships and boundaries have to do with reversing your insulin resistance, reaching your health goals and losing weight? I’ve told you before and I’m gonna tell you again this week that taking action on a goal you are setting for yourself is all about your relationship with yourself. You know putting on your oxygen mask first? We have to learn to do that and when we believe or stay attached to fixed and limited beliefs that it’s selfish to put our oxygen mask on first, then we aren’t helpful to anyone. o Your relationship with food is your relationship with yourself. That’s the most important thing I can coach you on is that self-worth is not related to achieving your goal or producing or anything external. You are worthy and 100% lovable now and always. We’ve coached on fully loving and accepting ourselves and how self-acceptance is like a warm self-acceptance blanket that is always readily available to you. No action needed ever. Then, we talked about self-love superpower and now we are digging deeper and talking about our relationship with ourselves and others. o What is a relationship? How we feel about another person is created by our thoughts about them and same with ourselves. Our relationship with ourselves is based on our thoughts and beliefs about ourselves. It also has to do with our expectations we have for other people and ourselves too and if other people meet our expectations we have for them or we have for ourselves. Sounds like lots of judging doesn’t it? Remember, when we are judging others we are often judging ourselves. o Here’s your playlist for the week “Shake It Off” by Taylor Swift “Brave” by Sara Bareilles “New Rules” by Dua Lipa “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson “Feeling Myself” by Nicki Minaj feat. Beyonce You are 100% lovable, always and forever. Self-love superpower, Dr. Karla See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It is no secret that we live in a society obsessed with body image. Over Christmas I was FEELING MYSELF. I had been on a pretty consistent workout regime, paired with a healthy well balanced diet & daily evening stretches. I felt strong & confident, that is until I saw a picture of myself enjoying the holidays & then... I stepped onto a scale. My heart sank... FAST! I went into a spiral as that former husky department segregated child was immediately transported to December 2020. As a NYer who was walking on average about 3 to 5 miles a day pre-pandemic, my body has begun to catch up. Throw in aging and I just wasn’t ready for that beeping number staring back at me. What if we could throw every scale away & pay attention to what some say really matters, the way our body truly & authentically feels. Guess what?!? WE CAN! In our interview, Ms. Emilie Battle helped me see that. That the beeping number staring at me from that demonic tool of self inflicting judgement & shame, that MF scale, had no power over me. Throwing off the projected desire to look a certain way & starting to reprogram ourselves to pay attention to how we FEEL, is what Battle Body is all about. Well boom, Ah ha moment, no more scales for me. I mean it takes more obvs, but as Whitney & TGIF once preached, it’s “step by step, day by day” that makes change happen. Come on in & learn more. Mmk? Mmk! Gday. TODAY'S TRIVIA: MUSICAL THEATER

This is the first of three bonus episodes created to accompany season one of Harness. This episode features Natalie Lee and Illana Gambrill and was recorded in November 2019. Natalie (who you'll recognise from SO1E01) is a blogger, speaker, fashionista and self love advocate. Illana is a professional dancer and the founder of Dance Box. The pair met when Natalie began shaking her booty at Illana's sweaty, sexy and empowering dance classes. Illana helped Natalie unleash her inner diva and, in turn, Natalie supported Illana to grow her business and focus her energy on lifting up women through movement. 2020 has already been a big year for these two powerhouses with the launch of FEELING MYSELF - inclusive, empowering workshops designed to leave all its attendees feeling powerful and confident. Their next event will be in Manchester on March 29th and at the time of this episode's release, just a few tickets remain! Welcome to the radio magazine that brings you news, commentary and analysis from a Black Left perspective. I’m Glen Ford, along with my co-host Nellie Bailey. Coming up: Community control of the police was a goal of the Black Panther Party that has now been taken up by activists, nationwide. Political prisoner Mumia Abu Jamal says the Democrats have impeached Donald Trump, but they will not be able to bring him to justice. And, a professor of women’s and gender studies has some insights into Black Girl Magic. The United National Anti-War Coalition – UNAC – is planning a series of peace offensives for the New Year. One problem with organizing against war, Is that most Americans don’t even know that economic sanctions are as deadly as bombs and bullets, and are a form of warfare. We spoke with UNAC organizer Sara Flounders. Last month, more than 800 activists from around the country gathered in Chicago to reestablish the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, with a focus on fighting for community control of police. Making the cops accountable to the Black community was a goal of the Black Panther Party. We spoke with Shepard McDaniel, known as “Brother Shep,” a veteran of the New York City chapter of the Panther Party. He would have liked to have attended the Chicago conference. That was Shepard McDaniel, or “Brother Shep,” formerly of the Black Panther Party in New York City. McDaniel is currently Community Affairs director for the Universal Zulu Nation Justin 'Mujahid' Kaliebe is an activist doing hard time in the US prison Gulag. Kaliebe is not as well known as Mumia Abu Jamal, but he packs a powerful political analysis. Aria Halliday is a professor of Women’s and Gender Studies at the University of New Hampshire. Halliday co-wrote an article in the Black political journal “Soul,” titled, “The Power of Black Girl Magic Anthems: Nicki Minaj, Beyoncé, and “Feeling Myself” as Political Empowerment.” We asked Prof. Halliday, just what is “Black Girl Magic”?

He's gotta be the third man! Small bonus, initially 2BELTZ was supposed to be a three man booth -- but it never worked out getting Jimmy locked in. THEN, he was supposed to be our first guest many moons ago, once again -- never worked out. Finally, we managed to drag Jimmy into the studio to record this podcast and all it took was a free JAY Z concert. Last week Saturday, Jimmy and Jameel hit up the JAY Z x TIDAL - B-Sides concert and we have a complete live recap of everything that occurred from the insanely long line, to the 40 songs he performed, and it somehow spills into a discussion about Nas & JAY Z. We also cover this week artists who should give it up due to their age and lack of relevance at this point, the Dragon Ball Z movie (how'd that happen), Beyonce and Nicki Minaj's "Feeling Myself" video, and the Sony/Spotify leaks. It's an incredibly dope episode with the three Migos back together again (Jimmy's Takeoff).
