On this episode of Post In Black, we talk movies and music with film and TV composer, Dara Taylor. Born in Poughkeepsie, New York, Dara grew up a little outside of Buffalo. We talk about how, between both of her parents, there was a mutual love of music that found its way to her. Hence, she thought every home had a 'record room.' Her mother, a church choir director, was the first person to teach her about music arrangement and instrumentation. So, how did Dara go from being a computer science major to composing for her latest project, the feature film, Strays? We get into it as well as the 'aha moment' when she decided that music in film and television was the adventure she was destined to take. In this really great and expanding conversation, Dara shares advice for those interested in film and TV composing. We get her perspective on starting out in the industry, navigating it through relationships and rejections, and the comedy, Strays, starring Jamie Foxx and Will Ferrell. Dara was nominated for a Society of Composers and Lyricists Award in 2023 for The Invitation. Her credentials include Tender Bar, directed by George Clooney, The Noel Diary, HBO Max's Little Ellen, Barb and Star Go To Vista Del Mar, Curious George: Cape Ahoy, Amazon's The Boys Presents: Diabolical, American Refugee, Echo Boomers and both Netflix series, Bookmarks and Trial By Media. Mike with the rare high rating loved The Vast of Night giving it 4.5 out of 5 Reels. He wishes more people would embrace smaller independent films. Led by Mel Donnelly played by Michael Shannon, the group leave behind a trail of destruction before Lance realizes he is in over his head with no way out. Adri’s next film, Echo Boomers, starring Michael Shannon, is in post post-production. Based on a true story, it’s about five college graduates who decide the best way to get back at the unfair economy and live the life they've always wanted is to steal from Chicago's richest and give to themselves. What you will learn: What childhood activities influenced Adri to work in the arts. How she found her way into art and production design during and after film school, as opposed to producing or directing. What she loves about production design vs. other behind-the-camera jobs on the film set. What she likes about working in film vs. television. How she works with directors months in advance of a film shoot to capture the look and feel of a film. How film sets can become so distinctive and unique that they become another character in the movie. The challenges of production design on a film where 70% of the movie takes place in a single restaurant. The rewards of working on films with incredible actors like Christian Bale, Will Ferrell, and Richard Jenkins. The challenges of networking and staying connected with film industry professionals. Black Friday- Retailers earn 40% of their sales in this short holiday season time frame. And many of us never cast a shadow in the doorway of a store. We shop online. Seeing the pictures of Black Friday, with people pressed up against the outside of store windows, after fighting for space to park, like some scene from the zombie show The Walking Dead, who really wants to go to a store and be part of that? More and more Americans are shopping online, almost exclusively, and not just at Christmas. It’s easier, the selection is bigger, there’s no teenaged sales clerk standing nearby, busily NOT helping me, and sometimes it’s cheaper. For many stores, especially those that offer little or nothing as part of their unique shopping experience, this is becoming a monstrous problem that will only get worse over time. The current crop of big spenders – the Boomers – increase their online spending each year, but the young set lives online. As the Echo Boomers take over the position of top spending cohort in the years to come, the stores want to make sure they’re in line to maintain their share. Or go the route of Sears and disappear. 4 Trends to watch: 1. Will in-store purchases increase this season? An August, 2018 In-Store Holiday Shopping survey of 1,200 American consumers found that 88% of shoppers intend to shop in physical stores this season. 2. Unique shopping experiences expected. Shoppers today are happy to drive to physical stores seeking “an experience,” as opposed to simple transactions. 3. How much will online purchasing increase? “The second quarter of 2018 e-commerce estimate increased 15.2% from the second quarter of 2018, while total retail sales increased 5.7% in the same period,” according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. 4. The multi-channel sales is the wave of the future. Various sales approaches include providing customers with an integrated shopping experience. In addition to brick and mortar locations, shoppers have access to products online from a desktop or their mobile phone. But every story has at least two sides. While sales may be good news for the retailers and the stock holders, the bad news is in a new survey of over 2,000 U.S. consumers from buyback site Decluttr showing some 66 million consumers will wake up with a hangover of more debt after the holidays. Christmas, along with everything else has gotten more expensive. Americans are attempting to keep up with the increases by taking on more debt. Thanks to increases in mortgage debt, auto loan debt, and credit card debt, Americans now have more debt than ever before. In August, 2018 the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Center for Microeconomic Data released its Quarterly Report on Household Debt and Credit. The report shows that total household debt in the U.S. increased by $82 billion in the second quarter, which means Americans now collectively carry $13.19 trillion in debt. One thing is for sure. This is not sustainable.

Paul is also the author of "The Perfect Investment - Creating Enduring Wealth from the Historic Shift to Multifamily Housing." The Perfect Investment teaches you… -The secrets used by the super-wealthy to attain and maintain their wealth over generations (and why you're not invited to their party). -Why multifamily investing scored 460% better than the stock market on a key risk vs. reward ratio. -Why investing in flips, single family rentals, and small apartments is a not a path to multi-generational wealth for the vast majority of people. -Why US demographics, the economy, and the fallout from the last recession have caused the perfect storm for the success of this asset class. -How multifamily investors “partner” with the IRS to reap significant profits while paying virtually no taxes. (Your CPA may not know these tax codes, but you need to!) Wellings Capital - Paul's Investment Company - an income-focused multifamily real estate investment firm centered on providing stable, yield-producing investments. WHY MULTIFAMILY: "THE LARGEST RENTAL GROUP New households aged 18 to 30 are being driven by the second largest demographic wave in US history: the Echo Boomers. The 76 million children and grandchildren of the Baby Boomers. In addition to this demographic group's sheer size, Echo Boomers are disenfranchised with the concept of home ownership. 75% of them are more likely to rent than own. THE SECOND LARGEST RENTAL GROUP The largest demographic group in US history: the Baby Boomers at 78 million strong. As this group transitions from homeownership to renting, they are likely to never own again. Additionally, the average lifespan continues to increase, thus extending this generation's rental demands." THE NATIONAL HOME OWNERSHIP RATIO Home ownership has rapidly declined from 69.2% in 2004 towards the mean of approximately 64% today. This homeowner displacement has driven, and will continue to drive, households out of residential owner-occupied property to renter-occupied apartments. ECONOMIES OF SCALE GO BIG OR GO HOME!!! Economies of Scale start at a very high level. GO PRO. Large properties have access to professional property management firms on a different scale than smaller properties." PAUL'S GREAT LESSON: In my personal life I am all about swinging for the fences. I love to invest in my family. I love to invest in relationships. I talk really loudly to strangers. I really want to care about people. As far as investing is concerned: I don't want to swing for the fences anymore. I used to believe in the double or nothing thing... the problem with that is the law of risk is commonly believed: low risk - low return, high risk - high return. We want to believe that! The truth is it is LOW RISK - LOW RETURN, HIGH RISK - HIGH POTENTIAL RETURN... HIGH POTENTIAL LOSS..." PAUL'S BIG WHY: "I want to thwart human trafficking and I want to rescue its victims... If you took the record profits of Nike, GM, Starbucks and Apple... combined them together and doubled it... That is the approximate annual revenue from Human Trafficking worldwide." ORGANIZATIONS TO SUPPORT: http://exoduscry.com and https://harvesthome.org WORDS TO LIVE BY: "Investing should be like watching grass grow or watching paint dry." - Paul Samuelson "Don't swing for the fences."
