Highlights of our conversation include: Why captive breeding programs for endangered species are both cruel and ineffective; How the mental health of both conservation professionals and animal rights activists is deeply impacted by the ongoing suffering of both wild animals and farmed animals; How ongoing ecological destruction is causing eco-anxiety and eco-distress in students and some of the more effective classroom approaches to address it; How environmental justice differs from ecological justice and why we need to address both if we hope to create a more just, regenerative future; How Sarah helps students become aware of the role that human overpopulation plays in humanity's ecological overshoot and helps make the classroom a comfortable place to discuss it.  See episode website for show notes, links, and transcript:  https://www.populationbalance.org/podcast/sarah-bexell   OVERSHOOT | Shrink Toward Abundance OVERSHOOT tackles today's interlocked social and ecological crises driven by humanity's excessive population and consumption. The podcast explores needed narrative, behavioral, and system shifts for recreating human life in balance with all life on Earth. With expert guests from wide-ranging disciplines, we examine the forces underlying overshoot: from patriarchal pronatalism that is fueling overpopulation, to growth-biased economic systems that lead to consumerism and social injustice, to the dominant worldview of human supremacy that subjugates animals and nature. We continue our season focusing on belonging by talking about places and spaces. What kinds of stories do you tell about the places of your past that made you who you are? How do you tell that story when that place has been destroyed by the effects of climate change?  dream hampton is an independent filmmaker who recently released a nine-minute short film called Freshwater. Prior to this project, hampton had worked on three long-form projects, including the widely recognized Surviving R. Kelly docuseries. Dealing with studios and facing creative limitations took a toll on dream, prompting a search for a creative project that could heal. In collaboration with her friend Invincible, dream embarked on a film project exploring flooded basements as a metaphor for memory, the effects of climate change, and the changing demographics of her hometown, Detroit. Freshwater was shot over all four seasons with a small crew of three or four people.  My conversation with dream includes thoughts around migration and climate refugees. Why aren't we doing a better job of responding to those who have left homes that have been made uninhabitable due to climate catastrophe? We also talk about ways that urban planning and surveillance have contributed to why our places are so poorly equipped to withstand the many challenges we're facing, whether it's fire or too much water. Through her story of loss, dream invites us all to reflect with her on how we might respond to this moment when, as she so aptly puts it, nature is talking to us. As storytellers, are we listening? How will we shape our stories to meet this moment?Guest info and other notables from the episode:dream hampton's WebsiteWatch the film FreshwaterInvincibleSterling TolesBelle Isle Here's how you can donate to Maui fire victimsBuy me a coffee!Leave me a voicemail to share on the show!Follow Me:●      My Instagram ●      My LinkedIn●      Art Heals All Wounds Website●      Art Heals All Wounds Instagram●      Art Heals All Wounds Facebook●      Art Heals All Wounds Newsletter

In the third episode of our exploration of climate anxiety, host Dr Susan Carland explores the shared experience of climate anxiety and how art can be used to reach the core of human emotions. Our expert guests create and study music and fiction that can evoke empathy and foster a sense of community among audiences who may be grappling with climate anxiety. Dr Anna McMichael and Dr Louise Devenish, from Monash University's Sir Zelman Cowan School of Music and Performing Arts, introduce “Climate Notes”. This unique project combines letters from climate scientists and ordinary people, which discuss how climate change makes them feel, with original musical compositions. These “musical letters” provide a moving outlet for expressing the emotional and psychological impacts of climate change. The episode also features literary scholar Professor Adeline Johns-Putra, head of the School of Arts and Social Sciences at Monash University Malaysia, who specialises in climate fiction, or “cli-fi.” Climate fiction includes novels, stories, and films that grapple with the impact of climate change on our world. These narratives can serve as a powerful tool for processing the emotional toll of climate anxiety, offering readers a chance to explore various perspectives on climate change and its consequences, fostering empathy and awareness. Climate anxiety, or eco-anxiety, is an unprecedented and growing mental health crisis. How do we wrestle with a planet-sized problem? This week, host Dr Susan Carland begins a three-part exploration of climate anxiety. She's joined by Climate Council CEO Amanda McKenzie, who defines climate anxiety as a rational concern about our future – or the lack of one. Monash University's Dr Rhonda Garad has found that climate anxiety's impact on young people is especially pronounced, leading them to make major life decisions early. Dr Susie Ho, a regular attendee of the UN's Conference of the Parties, is concerned about young people's avenues for advocacy. She discusses their feelings of powerlessness and anger stemming from the lack of effective action, which has led to a surge in climate activism. Although there are parallels between previous global existential threats and the dangers of climate change, Professor Alan Reid believes climate anxiety is distinct due to its long-term nature and lack of government and corporate action. These entities play a significant role in addressing climate anxiety. Unfortunately, as Australian Conservation Foundation CEO Kelly O'Shanassy points out, they've failed to address the challenge, exacerbating our fears. SUMMARY People have become less connected to nature, particularly with increasing urbanization. However, many studies are now clearly demonstrating that nature connectedness is crucial to our physical and mental health, and to the future of our communities' social, cultural, environmental, and economic well-being. Audrey Hystad, farm manager for the Clubhouse Farm in Kelowna, BC and Dr. Holli-Anne Passmore, assistant professor of Psychology at Concordia University of Edmonton, discuss the increasing need for people, and more specifically children, to be outdoors, learn about food and agriculture, and contribute to more resilient communities. They also talk about biophilia, our innate attraction to nature, and eco-anxiety, particularly as it relates to the ongoing degradation of our natural environment. TAKEAWAYS This podcast shows that: Educating children about food and agriculture contributes to resilient communities Outdoor play is essential for the health and well-being of children Studies demonstrate the importance of nature connectedness Connecting with nature is just as important as social connections We all have an innate attraction to nature The physical and mental health of people improve with daily connection to nature Eco-concern and eco-anxiety can lead to increased pro-environmental behaviour SPONSOR   GUESTS  Audrey Hystad, MSc Audrey Hystad holds a Master of Science degree in Sustainable Enterprise from Stockholm University, in association with Stockholm Resilience Center and Stockholm Environment Institute. From the lens of Resilience and Complex Systems Theory, her focus is to take the latest in research and effectively put it to use in practical applications. Her work with land-based learning, policy and procedure development, wildlife safety practice, and identification and use of wild foods, has contributed to fill gaps between our modern societies and the ecosystems services that we rely on to survive. Audrey has worked with toddler to teen programs for over a decade in Sweden and Canada. Her interdisciplinary science education and intent to contribute to a more resilient future for our communities, have led to her work with The Clubhouse Farm project. The Clubhouse Farm is a forest-and-farm-based outdoor classroom that brings children to play, relax, and explore in the natural world while learning about where food comes from. The basics of horticulture, hydrology, architecture, engineering, ethics, interpersonal skills development, and more are lessons that are stealthily disguised as inquiry-based play at a developmentally appropriate level for children of all abilities. Since its 2012 grassroots start, it has successfully benefited thousands of children that have visited, while supporting local food production, acquisition of ecological knowledge, and support of habitat for biodiversity – offering great hope for future design of integrated community spaces that meet the needs of all its stakeholders. Eco-terrorists are resorting to ever more violent attacksas the UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27), in Sharm El Sheikh, gets closer. In this episode of The Terrorist Therapist Show, we'll look at how Eco-terrorists are waging ‘jihad'. First, you will hear about the roots of Eco-terrorism and the current radicalgroups. Then you'll discover if you have Eco-anxiety and what Greta Thunberg has to do with it. Next, you'll hear about recent ‘attacks' - from destroying masterpiece paintings in museums to vandalizing gas pumps to sit-ins on racetracks! One more shocking and ironic than the next! People who claim to want to preserve irreplaceable wonders of nature have no problem destroying irreplaceable works of art. Hear what they did to Van Gogh's “Sunflowers,” Monet's “Les Meules” (Haystacks), Vermeer's “The Girl with a Pearl Earring” and more. They even smashed cake in King Charles' face at Madame Tussaud's waxworks museum. Eco-terrorists are no better than the Taliban, ISIS or Al Qaeda - who take great pleasure in destroying artifacts, the cultural inheritance of humanity. But, they're not just about defacing art, they target gas stations and buildings that house Think Tanks theydon't like. They destroyed expensive cars at car shows - even electric cars. Why? Because they're calling for an end to individual ownership of cars. On the opposite side - Dutch farmers who appreciate and celebrate the earth, are being bullied by their government to cut their farms in half and get rid of their cows. Ostensibly, this is to decrease the methaneoutput of their cows' digestive tract, but there is a darker underside - a dangerous political motive.

When I caught up with Sam recently, she didn't look good. It turned out she's in the midst of eco-anxiety and has been for some time. Well, if you've been through it, all I can tell you is it's not fun, but at the same time, we have no time to sit in it for too long anymore either. Time is of the essence now.  Anyhoo, I said we have to chat about how you're feeling right in this moment, as well as what is helping you get through it? Sam said yes immediately. And so this podcast was born. It's not depressing, we promise, bit it is realistic. It's also actionable. For all my experience with eco-anxiety, action is the only path out. Sam is experiencing the same truth. We covered a lot in this discussion…Thinking about how we future-proof our children's futureWhat eco-anxiety feels like and how it manifestsA great book recommendation – Don't even think about it! to understand why we can't grasp this bigger story. I'm waiting for it to arriveHow Sam is speaking with many friends and people in her community, who are quietly looking to set themselves up for the future, but not speaking about it more openly. Is it fear of being mocked? Maybe. We discuss why it's important that everyone does speak up! Guilt and past lives – are we feeling it? Is there any use? And why awareness means you'll be looking at life through a new lensAlso how the changes we make that can ripple out around us and create more changeAnd so much more. We hope this helps anyone going through eco-anxiety, as well as those who haven't been able to face it yet. You can follow Samantha Gayfer hereWebsite On LinkedIn On FacebookTo get in touch with me, here I amWebsites www.andreatedwards.com and www.uncommon-courage.com My book Uncommon Courage, An Invitation And the Uncommon Courage workbook My other book, 18 Steps to an All—Star LinkedIn Profile (2022 edition)    LinkedIn @AndreaTEdwardsTwitter @AndreaTEdwardsInstagram @UncommonAndrea My professional Facebook page And my Facebook Group Uncommon Courage Tik Tok @uncommonandreatedwards

Do you ever feel scared about climate change? Anxious about global warming? Are you grieving the world as you know it? You are definitely not the only one feeling that way. Which is why there's now a term for this feeling: eco-anxiety.In his therapist practice, Dr. Thomas Doherty helps people with exactly that. He is a psychologist who specializes in applying an environmental perspective to mental health and well-being.And he's not new to this topic - in 2011, he co-wrote a paper with Susan Clayton called The Psychological Impacts of Global Climate Change, and that paper has been cited OVER 700 times. So I LOVED talking to him about his advice for those of us struggling with eco-anxiety, the mental health benefits of getting outside in nature, and how we can figure out our own environmental identity.Listen to Dr. Doherty's podcast here: https://climatechangeandhappiness.com/Read the New York Times article about climate change and therapy, featuring Dr. Doherty: https://www.nytimes.com/2022/02/06/health/climate-anxiety-therapy.htmlYou can keep up with Mentally Together on Instagram @mentallytogetherpod. In this episode, the presenters, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Huu and lay Buddhist practitioner and journalist Jo Confino, are joined by special guest, Zen Buddhist monk Brother Phap Linh (Brother Spirit). Together, they discuss eco-anxiety, the challenges of and solutions for shifting to a new paradigm which can heal us and our planet, and whether it's possible to change our minds, hearts, and future. Plus: how can you be at peace in what feels like a battlefield? The conversation touches upon “the decisive decade”; individualism and competition; interdependence; handling fear; transformation; change in “the age of collective procrastination”; and opportunities in difficult times. Is it possible to ‘sit' with collapse? Brother Phap Linh (Brother Spirit) shares his journey of transformation, from studying sciences at Cambridge, to numerous retreats, and eventual monastic life. He further talks about creating transformation at both personal and collective levels; the cult of individualism; societal numbness; handling the energy of negativity; the basis of understanding reality, and what nourishes our views and beliefs; the economic conceit ‘the tragedy of the commons'; creating shared visions and aspirations; and telling new stories. And how do you change your view when you're caught in the old paradigm?Brother Phap Huu shares insights on how to not lose ourselves in a fast-paced environment, and looks at: fundamental questions; procrastination; individual aspirations; becoming free from attachment; striving and the importance of stopping; learning in the community; the Six Harmonies; and the joy of sharing. There's also important advice for those ‘burning out' in the environmental movement.Jo recollects Thich Nhat Hanh's speech to the members of the UK Parliament and his thoughts on conflictual political systems. He further muses on the lasting joy of community life. The episode ends with a short meditation on gratitude and Mother Earth, guided by Brother Phap Linh. ------

Are your sustainability practices sustainable? Not just in terms of how they impact the planet, but how they impact YOU! Living “sustainably”, “eco-friendly”, and “zero-waste” are so trendy at the moment, but the reality is that these terms are so much bigger than a short-term trend. These are practices that, if they can become a normal part of our daily lives, will have an enormous impact on the planet! So, how do we do that? By adopting practices that feel good to us on an individual level. If it doesn't resonate with you, will you really stick with it? Probably not.. which means, it's not very sustainable!  This is just one of the topics we talk about today with sustainability blogger, Miah Ké-leigh. Miah, joining us from across the globe in the Netherlands, sat down to talk about her journey creating content in the sustainability space and more.   One of my favorite takeaways from this episode is applicable to everyone, but especially those of us that love the outdoors. Miah says, “You'll start to realize how much the earth actually impacts your hobbies and lifestyle. And if you take care of it, you don't actually have to give anything up.” For us to continue to enjoy nature and do the sports we love, taking care of the environment is just a given! Sustainable living doesn't have to be overly complicated. And certainly we ALL can make a positive impact.    Other topics we touch on:  Sustainable Travel - does it exist? Eco and Sustainability Blogging Growth in your personal sustainability journey How social media can be a blessing and a hindrance  Have the conversations with people - keep it alive Mental & emotional health shouldn't suffer from sustainable practices - combating eco-anxiety Figuring out where you fit into the eco-movement - and how to stay true to you in the process Femininity and Color in Sustainability Greenwashing: how to avoid it - do your research Continued learning - using social media as a resource to learn more    Connect with Miah online:  https://instagram.com/earthtomiah https://www.earthtomiah.com/   We still have a few spots left for our Surf & Yoga Wellness Retreat this December!
