TranscriptHey thereSo I am walking the backside of this little meadow, forested area where my mom livesIt's on the edges of old farmland and I'm about to hop over a split rail fence, which is a little awkward, it's a little tallThere's some, a lot of native plants around here, and also some volunteers from elsewhereOregon ash and cottonwood, willow, aspenThere's a grove of hawthorn in full flowerThis is a place where deer hang outFloods in the winterIt's marshy where I am right nowI could probably set up a tent back hereIt's quietI've just come back from the far east side of the stateI was off grid, down in a canyon for four days, in some pretty crazy country, working on a project and just existing reallyI think it was probably the least I've interacted with screens and media in maybe a decadeI didn't really have cell phone signal for about a week and a half, pretty intentionallyI basically just didn't turn my phone on unless I needed navigationAnd then there were three nights and four days when I was down in the bottom of this canyon where I really didn't do anything at allI just kind of existed down thereAte food and had a little fire now and thenWatched the light changeAnd it was beautiful and hard, easy, lonely, quiet, all the thingsAnd I've been thinking a lot about why I do what I do, my work as an artist and personI don't want to think about it too much, but doing something like that made me really consider a lot about why I make things, share things, live the way I doThere's just a lot thereThere's a lot of assumptions, a lot of reasons I've been doing stuff for yearsA lot of time passed, a lot of habits, that kind of thingNow I'm in the Grove of CottonwoodsIt's kind of a flood groveSome reeds back in hereMaybe there's sedgesSo I don't have a lot of answers about why, but I think I discovered a new language of some kind down in that canyonDefinitely a new relationship with myselfThere wasn't much to hide down thereTurns out being alone for long periods of time is pretty toughI mean, I've done it before, but this was different somehowIt's really good to do, but it's not easy sometimesParts of it aren't easyParts of it are really incredibleIt's always funny to be alone in a place like that and run into a person once in a while and realize that pretty much everybody else is out there with other peopleIt really got me thinking about the reasons why people do things and why I do thingsFor me, a lot of it is to get away from loneliness, actuallyFrom being alone with my own thoughtsPartially because they can be boringPartially because it's really not maybe the healthiest long term to always just be alone with one's own thoughtsBut I think that there's something really deep thereAnd I don't consume much mediaI mean, maybe a podcast every two or three daysSometimes I don't listen to one for a week or soBut something I thought was really strange down there is I had songs that I hadn't listened to for many days just repeatedly looping in my headAnd it was almost like my mind was just spinning in neutral, trying to find something stimulating to remember or to latch on toOr maybe it was just digesting everythingMy friend Martin said metabolizing, which I really likeActually metabolizing the experiences that I've hadAnd I think it takes a really silent, open, empty space without any direction, honestlyNo structureNo one else aroundNo informationJust the sun rising and settingAnd sitting in places like that really makes me reconsider kind of my whole life. Why do I do what I do? Why do I want to share writing and recordings with people? What's really at the base of all that? What need of mine is being met? Am I doing it as a means to an end? Or am I doing it as an end in and of itself? And I've decided pretty conclusively that I want to do things in my life that are an end in and of themselvesI don't want to be chasing different activities for a lot of my life because they're giving me something that's not inside of the activity itselfAnd I think I do want to share what I make, but it's difficult to know whether that's worthwhile or not for othersAnd so I decided that I'll do it for my own joy and my own insightsAnd if others want to come along for the ride and see what's thereI mean, I've been doing it this way all along, but I think that there's always these shadow sides, like hidden unconscious sides of any activity or anything a person does that aren't fully available to them unless they sit and really delve into the whyAnd an activity I've been doing recently is asking myself why seven or eight times about something really gets down to the root of what's going onIt's hardI feel like my mind wants to squirm away from those kinds of inquiriesBut I think it's pretty necessary and helpful in the long runI'm leaning on a tree and there's moss on itIt's youngWhat happened is it fell overProbably got blown overThat happened a while agoThe original shoot has since been pruned off by the tree itselfIt's broken off and healed offAnd right above it, the tree is totally horizontal from where it fellAnd right above that crook, there's another strong, young stem coming out at a 90 degree angleAnd there is one back further, too, before this one was the main apical meristem, I think is what it's called, which I learned about in my pruning work over the last couple of monthsAnd that one's now 20 feet tall and the roots are still somehow connectedAnd in fact, the trees put down more roots to stabilize and this tree is probably going to be here a long time nowIt's nice to see that when things get knocked over, they can get up againThat's kind of how I felt this last yearLots of knocking over, getting up againI think I can hear seven different birds singing right nowThanks for listening. “If you want to lead transformational change, you have to do the work on yourself first.”What makes a leader great? This question is a hard one to answer, even after my 25+ years studying and working in the field of human and leadership development. As I think more deeply about that question, I am convinced after all this experience working with leaders that a great leader is someone who spends the time to do the deeper work on themselves. Greatness is sourced from the inside-out. The leader who works on their own tendency to get defensive, learns to regulate unproductive and reactive emotions, and understands their own weaknesses is one who gets out of their own way. Part of that deeper work includes healing the impact of childhood adversity. Today we're talking about how our childhood adversity can impact our leadership effectiveness. We also talk about doing the deeper work to overcome our own unproductive, unconscious patterns that get in the way of our interpersonal relations. In this episode:What makes a leader great? The impact of childhood trauma on human developmentDoing the work on yourself to lead transformational changeAnd more!Power Presence Academy | Leadership with Less Ego And More Soul is the go-to podcast for anyone who leads. Oren will be a guest teacher (of sorts) and he will guide you through a meditation intended to cultivate more joy.In his new book, and our longer conversation coming out tomorrow, Oren highlights the role of joy: In the face of crisesWhen fighting for what we care aboutAdvocating for social changeAnd pursuing challenging long term goals and projects with them. He makes a compelling case for this in different ways including sharing stories of people finding ways to experience joy even in the face of immense challenges, including civil rights activists in the 1960's singing together in chorus as they continued to fight for meaningful change. Whether it's little moments or deeper and more profound experiences - joy can keep us going, when the going gets tough. And in a broader sense is part of what makes our experience of life beautifulI hope you enjoy this special practice on joy with Oren Jay Sofer. Psalm 46 For the choir director. A Psalm of the sons of Korah, set to Alamoth. A Song. 46 God is our refuge and strength,A very present help in trouble.2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should changeAnd though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea;3 Though its waters roar and foam,Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. Selah. 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,The holy dwelling places of the Most High.5 God is in the midst of her, she will not be moved;God will help her when morning dawns.6 The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised His voice, the earth melted.7 The Lord of hosts is with us;The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah. 8 Come, behold the works of the Lord,Who has wrought desolations in the earth.9 He makes wars to cease to the end of the earth; He breaks the bow and cuts the spear in two;He burns the chariots with fire.10 “Cease striving and know that I am God;I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”11 The Lord of hosts is with us;The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
Navigating career paths can be a daunting challenge. We pour our time and effort into applications, only to be met with rejection after rejection. Many aspiring wildlife professionals can relate to the frustration and self-doubt that arise from these setbacks. In the pursuit of our dreams and career goals, we often find ourselves facing moments of self-doubt and uncertainty. Thoughts of inadequacy and imposter syndrome can quietly seep in, casting doubts on our abilities and leaving us feeling hopeless when we don't get the outcomes we want. But in the face of these challenges, one of the most valuable lessons we can learn is the importance of not giving up. Today on the Fancy Scientist Podcast, I interviewed Nicole Blankertz, park ranger with Michigan State Parks, and alumni of my Successful Wildlife Professional. Nicole didn't expect to become a park ranger, in fact, she was determined to become a wildlife researcher, but she struggled to get positions when the pandemic changed her plans. Nicole's path was far from smooth sailing - it included setbacks and self-doubt that would have caused many to throw in the towel. Nicole graduated in 2020 and had an internship lined up, which got canceled because of COVID. She applied to other jobs but didn't get any. Just rejection after rejection. All of these rejections led to some imposter syndrome and frustration and she knew things had to change. She made a big decision and enrolled in the The Successful Wildlife Professional program so that we could work together to get her interviews. Through learning from the program and personal mentoring from me, we improved Nicole's job application and things changed dramatically. We focused only on her job application without adding a single new experience, skill, certification, etc. We just emphasized and demonstrated the experience she already had. Nicole also decided to apply for some jobs outside of the realm of wildlife research. The outcome of all of this? A life-changing position with the parks department, proving that a strategy and persistent mindset can unlock unexpected possibilities. In this episode, we talk about what it's like to work as a park ranger and how Nicole is keeping the possibility of working in wildlife research again open. So, if you're wrestling with imposter syndrome or feel like giving up, this episode is for you! Get ready to be inspired, motivated, and armed with the tools to conquer your own self-doubt. When you believe in yourself, refuse to give up, and take action, there's no limit to what you can achieve. Specifically, we discussed:How to revamp your job application and enhance your chances of getting hiredThe unwavering importance of persistence in the face of rejectionThe significance of non-wildlife jobs and transferable skills in attaining your dream wildlife careerWhat it's like to work as a park ranger and in the park serviceKey considerations to understand when contemplating a career changeAnd much more, including invaluable GREEN FLAGS to guide you in pursuing your dream career in wildlife biology!I'm Dr. Stephanie Manka (formerly Schuttler), a wildlife biologist of nearly 20 yrs with 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications, author of the book Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know (https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Job-Wildlife-Biology-What/dp/B08JDYXS4G/) and founder of Fancy Scientist. When I caught up with Sam recently, she didn't look good. It turned out she's in the midst of eco-anxiety and has been for some time. Well, if you've been through it, all I can tell you is it's not fun, but at the same time, we have no time to sit in it for too long anymore either. Time is of the essence now. Anyhoo, I said we have to chat about how you're feeling right in this moment, as well as what is helping you get through it? Sam said yes immediately. And so this podcast was born. It's not depressing, we promise, bit it is realistic. It's also actionable. For all my experience with eco-anxiety, action is the only path out. Sam is experiencing the same truth. We covered a lot in this discussion…Thinking about how we future-proof our children's futureWhat eco-anxiety feels like and how it manifestsA great book recommendation – Don't even think about it! to understand why we can't grasp this bigger story. I'm waiting for it to arriveHow Sam is speaking with many friends and people in her community, who are quietly looking to set themselves up for the future, but not speaking about it more openly. Is it fear of being mocked? Maybe. We discuss why it's important that everyone does speak up! Guilt and past lives – are we feeling it? Is there any use? And why awareness means you'll be looking at life through a new lensAlso how the changes we make that can ripple out around us and create more changeAnd so much more. We hope this helps anyone going through eco-anxiety, as well as those who haven't been able to face it yet. Paranoia is the fear of a potential or imagined threat. In this episode...Scientists have discovered a strange heartbeat signal in deep space. Does it come from alien life?Smart meters are proving useless at helping people save money. Smart meters are justified, at least in part, by the myth that humans cause climate change and that the planet is in danger from greenhouse gas emissionsPatrick Vallance has warned MP's the world is soon to be plunged into even deeper turmoil than the Covid era because of the myth of human caused climate changeAnd finally, new data may prove masks don't work when the alternative media on the internet have been pointing this out since spring 2020. The new data comes as Singapore and New Zealand cases rise above Australia despite extremely tight restrictions in Australia. Masks are justified by the myth that SARS-Cov-2, which is claimed to cause Covid-19, and other viruses exist which has never been scientifically proven, as I have detailed in this podcast many times before.

New short-term rental regulations are sprouting up around densely-populated states like California and New York. These regulations can stop new investors from setting up shop while making established hosts much wealthier. With stricter short-term rental laws, what should real estate investors do to hedge their risk against being stuck with a property that can't be rented out? Both Ashley and Tony own short-term rentals. Ashley's is situated in a town with no regulations, while Tony has vacation rentals scattered across multiple markets, each with its own specific ordinances. Tony knows that even with these new laws, there are still steps you can take to ensure that your short-term rental investment isn't ever at risk of being left empty.Looking into short-term rental markets? Here are some suggestions:Look for established, mature vacation rental markets when starting your searchEconomic dependency on tourism will most likely make an area more open to short-term rentalsAlways research the number of short-term rentals an owner can legally own in an area as well as how the permitting process worksStay up-to-date on an area's short-term rental laws as they are subject to changeAnd more in the episode…If you want Ashley and Tony to answer a real estate question, you can post in the Real Estate Rookie Facebook Group! My guest is Solita Roberts, and her focus is to empower us to love and accept who we are, including our body, our personality, and our individual style and in turn accepting who other people are, including their body, personality and individual style. What does it mean to have an inclusive workspace in relation to how we dress? How our clothes are so much more than us buying some shirts and pants. It's all about how we want to express our authentic self and the story behind the clothes and how we dressWhy we are not taught how to dress our authentic self, but only how to dress to fit in and to blend in, especially as women and even more so as black women. how and why we can get stuck if we don't let our wardrobe grow and change along as we grow and changeAnd at the end we talk about what mistakes especially us women can make when dressing and what it has to do with our personal brand and how we show up as business women. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I loved this conversation. S2 E27: Generational Politics“If you truly understand what's different between generations, you have a much better idea of what's coming up in the future.”It turns out there are very real differences between the generations. Key external events - a world war, a crippling global financial crash, 9⁄11, or even a pandemic - will mark a generation in a way that differentiates them from previous or later ones. But there are also slower cultural and technological differences that also make their mark: consider the dwindling role of religion across the West over 4 generations, or the impact of smart phones on the way we all think.”The concept of the Generation is the most important one… because it is how history moves, changes, wheels and flows” - Ortega y GassetBobby Duffy has written the book on generational differences, and here explains what brings us together and splits us apart - from our attitudes to sex, money and moral values to the way we think of driving or home-ownership.“Because we're so deeply connected, looking at things generationally is really important to us because we want each generation after us to do better”Listen to Bobby discuss:How to go about defining generationsHow we get our stereotypes right and wrongWhy Gen Z are in a ‘sex recession'Why Gen X are so miserableWhether the Baby Boomers really did have it so much easierWhether there is space for the ‘individual' in a demographic analysis of culture and personalityThe 3 Key drivers of attitudinal changeAnd why we all live 200 years…Read the Full TranscriptBobby DuffyBobby Duffy is Professor of Public Policy and Director of the Policy Institute. This week's question comes from Rhett on the Real Estate Rookie Facebook Group. Rhett is asking: How do you inform an inherited tenant of changes in ownership after you close on a property? When you inherit a tenant, you often inherit a lease as well, so it's important to know exactly what the tenant is paying for rent, their security deposit, and their lease terms during your due diligence period. If you want to notify your new tenants of an ownership change, make sure you do so professionally, so they reach out to you on your business phone, during the hours you've set availability at.Here are some suggestions from Ashley:Send an estoppel agreement to the tenants so you can verify the leaseGive your new tenants a welcome package with all the needed informationCheck your local laws about rent increase timelines Prepare for the potential of vacancy in case a tenant disagrees with the rent change/ownership changeAnd more in the episode…If you want Ashley and Tony to answer a real estate question, you can post in the Real Estate Rookie Facebook Group! JB:Today we welcome Paul Ross. Paul is an author, speaker, trainer, Maser Hypnotist, Master Practitioner of Neuro-linguistic Programming and amore!PR:I’m honored to be leading us on this journeyJB:How’d you get into sales?PR:I got into sales because I was a 29 year old virgin who couldn’t get a date. Couldn’t get a date ever!Had zero EQ(emotional intelligence) outside of facts, figures, graphs, charts. Challenging to communicate with people in a way that helps to communicate in sales context To communicate with people that connects with their emotions can be really challenging.Tried psychotherapy, read books, prayed and stumbled into a book about NLP Neuro Linguistic programming10 pages in, stop, and you go WOW, I must learn more!3-4 months to heal up my shame & bad mindset. Then applied the techniques and IT WORKED!First GF age of 29, realized he could teach other guysBecame a dating coach and began teaching students to get huge results, I found a family, here’s a picture of my wife and kids...this stuff is working for SALES!Getting a sale is like a date - outreach, prospecting, qualify, create rapport, presentational, trial close and handle objectionsDating is harder because there is a lot more PERSONAL RejectionBeing a hypnotist the unconscious/subconscious mind is the seat where decisions are actually madeJB:So much to unpack from that and things like handling PERSONAL objections which is so profound in dating and can feel similar in salesPR:How I learned the power of not taking it personally;Had a student who wanted to take him to a restaurant and watch him go pickup women. Didn’t want to do it, but then he offered $10K in cash. The student goes beyond strike out and crashes and burns. Have you ever seen someone get beat down time and time again so you feel terrible? That was this guy!Head outside waiting for cab (pre-Uber) they were done, but found a nice lady on the street to try one last timeShe got pissed. She decides how she responds, we decide where we come fromPattern interrupt puts his arm out - she is a daughter, she is loved somewhere. Broke her down. In between sobbing, this had nothing to do with you. What made that possible - BROKE HER PATTERN- what was she expecting me to do?Fight backStay Angry (if you’re in rapport)Sneak away Didn’t make it about her or himself/ Switched the meaning of the whole event by interrupting patternRapport can wreck your sale if you do it at the write timeI did the unexpected, she was expecting me to fight back or just apologize and sneak away. I did the unexpected and got a much different result. If I can do that in that emotionally loaded situation, I can train anyone to overcome an objection in a much less tense situation.Coming from outside the field of sales. When you’re inside a particular field you have the benefits and advantages of knowing it. But you also have the myopia of the narrow focus into a specific area. When you appeal to the subconscious mind of your prospect/client, they will do the majority of the work. Subtle Words That Sell: How to Get Your Prospects to Convince Themselves To BuyWhen you do it right, they talk themselves into buying.JB: How do you pattern interrupt and get into the subconscious?PR:Prospects want to get the work out of their way. Have you ever interviewed people? It’s so mind numbing Destroying Objections- 5 techniquesThe OF Course Method-TO ME. Of Course you do, otherwise you wouldn’t be in this business you’re consistently committed to everydayTake the objection, and the MEANING of that objection is WHY YOU SHOULD LISTEN Have you ever been in a situation where the more options you were presented with it made it more confusing? - Based on a hypnotic principle- Dr. Milton Erickson -revolutionized the world of hypnosis - died in 1980 Love Pattern Interrupts - helps make people susceptible to create a narrow window where you can lead them to a new possibility. Didn’t say WHAT or WHEN- left it vague and unclearWhatever you can get the prospect to imagine for themselves they will think of it as their own idea. Be vague and make suggestions so the prospect starts to fill in the blanks for themselvesAs I’m leading you in this exploration of subconscious communication today - I’m not sure all the points at which you’ll stop to think WOW Paul has some fascinating things to share. But as that’s taking place I’m so honored to begin this journey of mentorship with me. Assuming they will continue learning from you. JB: What’s a pattern interrupt?PR: Stops their current thinking and allows you to reframe the meaning of their objection in the back of your headAll of this stuff applies to any field - this applies to so many people, LOVES to teach everybodyJB:Where do sellers leverage a pattern interrupt?PR: If the prospect doesn’t want to engage, answer questions. Worked across realtors, mortgage loan officers, Sales Engineers - you are the same guys I taught for years how to meet women and successfully employee your romantic stylings SE matches the software and benefits in front of a group of experts whose job it is to suss out whether it will meet their needs. Lots of time a Tech Hijacker who wants to poke holes in everything. “Before we begin this exploration of this suite of solutions. I want to acknowledge, I welcome questions, as long as you laugh at my jokes that’s absolutely fine. If you are the type of person who wants to prove me wrong, I’m already promising I know I can be wrong.”Power of INOCULATION - inoculate your audience before they come up with objectionsBefore we dive into there are 3 possible responses(how do I get in front of them):Will sound like what you already knowMajority of it will make some senseSome of this will be totally off the walls and that’s where I want to get you excitedThe potential of bringing you results so far beyond what you’re enjoying today.Slowed down the pace of his speaking to create a more hypnotic responseIf you want to get into the power of subconscious suggestion, slow your voice down It’s in the pause where you find the power.JB: How do you learn to slow your speaking?PR:Why mirror people when I can lead them? Take the content out, change the tempo and the pace (to learn pacing) - Mary had a little lamb…..her fleece was……..white as snow…..Rich Bandler- mentor- take nonsense content and pace your voice so you are less focused on the words and can alter the tone and paceJB: What is NLP and how do you use it?PR: I am using it the whole time. The suggestions are buried in the words.FIND YOURSELF, DISCOVER YOURSELF, ALLOW YOURSELF -- use these 3 phrases in your sales presentations/negotiations, your sales will explode. Do you ever just find yourself with your head in the refrigerator, hand on the door and you don’t remember what it is you’re looking for? What does it mean to FIND YOURSELF doing something -it happens outside of your conscious awareness/controlAs we’re having this discussion I don’t know at which point you might STOP and FIND YOURSELF MAKING A GREAT DECISIONClarity doesn't have to be powerful you can be vague and be successful in salesEverything I’ve learned came from my mom, blame it on her. JB: How do traditional, common teachings about mindset actually get in the way of your progress?PR:One of the limiting beliefs sales people have is they do OK with the mid-level clients, they just can’t close the big accounts. It’s very difficult to convince someone to do something when they have a million repetitions with themselves saying I can’t, can’t can’tNot a Napoleon Hill fan. More contrarian thinking as many people LOVE Napolean Hill. Who would lean on affirmations (I Close BIG DEALS!) but the subconscious mind wins over the conscious mind. When you go to create change:Difficult to change beliefs about your identity - to change I AM statements - easy to change people’s beliefs of what they can learn/acquireAlways stay in rapport with the unconscious mindWhen someone states a limiting belief take it away from being about them and more so a skill they can learnOpposed to I can I can I can, use….Up Until Now it was my experience that I didn't close the high ticket items→ more empowering statement because it opens the POSSIBILITY that you can succeedEasier to get someone to believe in the possibility they can changeAnd now I claim MY LEARNING OF MY SKILLS TO CLOSE MY BIG TICKET CLIENTSDifference between wanting & claiming?Ownership language; my, mine, etc. Add in some adjectivesI claim these skillsI claim My skillsI claim my AMAZING skills- creates a lot more power Make it about skills + ownership + adjectiveReflexively apply to the listener- take what they just said. Wow that’s a powerful belief you’ve learned to invest inWhat would it be like as you now open up to a mysterious new way of thinking?Being deliberately vague at the right time, adding in suggestions, use trance phrases to help drive the conversation.Watching a strawweight fight, ladies throwing many combinations - one of the best fights - If you just use one of these tools, when you use them in partnership with each other it becomes crazy powerful. In hypnosis we call this the Law of Compound Suggestion. JB:This is where I think we can get so much!PR:I have an ulterior motive, I want people to fall in love with the transformational power of language, structure consciousness, shape decisions and drive behavior.See people fall in love with themselves, close big deals, sales go up by 15-20-30%People on the subconscious level not to just talk to him more, but to fall in love with itThe brain is miraculous, much more beautiful and complicated than a computer.I think there is something magical going on between our earsJB:How do you help people bounce back from failure?PR:Surrender and Embrace practiceAffirmations:I surrender my right to envy, despair, self punishment and demanding the world provide meAnd embrace my practice of joy, appreciation and ability to learn any skills I needSurrender my right to spite the success of others, embrace my right ot learning from themI am blessed to have my challenges in my life, joyously, courageously, creatively face the challenges in my life and conquerJB:Talk to me about your daily routinesPR:I practice happiness for the success of others! Metta meditation from BuddhismWhen you are grateful for other people’s success it’s the completion/multiplication of your own gratitude for what you haveEnvy multiplies your lack or what you miss out on Envy implies a belief that you can’t do/have somethingPurge myself of subtle self punishmentObvious positions, anger, jealousy we can deal with , the subtle ones have power because we don’t see themIf you have an ego problem like me, have cats because they will show you that you don’t matterJB:Talk to me about meditation practicePR:2500 year old Buddhist practice called Vipassana, essentially mindfulnessFocusSensory clarity- acutely aware of everything going onEquanimity - non interference with the flow of the experienceSelf is not a thing, an ever arising set of experiences. It can be very liberating especially when suffering. So much pain and grief upon the passing of his mother, allow the grief to grip my body, feel it through every part of my body...after 30 minutes broke up into waves of energy. Did I suffer? NO. Was in grief but not suffering. Went from grieving incapacitated to griveing in my lifeAs humans we aren’t taught to handle pain well. When we can walk side by side with pain and uncertainty. Biggest problems for people not fear of failure but the uncertainty. Unwillingness to move forward without certainty. JB:The power of meditation, mindset and subconscious is so powerful because sales is a life skill about engaging with people, engaging with yourself and building awareness that can take you forward. What does success mean to you?PR: The freedom to do what I love to do, teaching, and doing it in a way where I can have financial reward to choose to spend my money on experiences not things. It gives me the opportunity to play with the kind of people I want to play with. As a financial adviser working with female clients, it’s important to remember that women have their own concerns and priorities when they’re building their wealth. You can’t just tweak your strategy for male clients — you need to tailor your plan to address women’s priorities. Alex Love is a stand-up comedian, freelance writer and serial blogger. He has been performing comedy regularly since 2010 and his first solo show, How To Win A Pub Quiz has sold out a number of times at both the Edinburgh Fringe and New Zealand Fringe festivals. He has also been blogging honestly about his journey, his successes, his failures and his bowels(!) since 2011. I wanted to learn how he is able to do what so many of us, myself included, shy away from with regards to public speaking, putting yourself out there to be judged and criticised, getting it wrong, failing in public, and interpersonal confrontation. Alex has written extensively about how he deals with these exact things, so I knew that he would be the perfect guest to help us really dive into how to face negative emotions and figure out how to lessen their power on us so that they don't hold us back from doing what we want to do.Episode highlights: What do you do after hitting rock bottom?Rewiring your brain for positivityWhat to do with the voice in your head that tells you you're not good enoughWhy you should welcome nerves before putting yourself out thereThe best way to exercise failure demonsHow to deal with deliberate knobheadsBlogging as therapyPhilosophies for lifeWhy make the effort to improve? What do chilli con carne and jokes have in common? How using your phone less can help with climate changeAnd of course, Alex sets his personal environmental challenge in line with his valuesI'd love to hear your thoughts about the episode. Do you feel more empowered to put yourself out there and go for the things you want regardless of whether you succeed or fail? Are there any failures that you think you could learn more from? Something as simple as “I have this amazing idea that will absolutely change people lives!” morphs into a 3 month project with hundreds of hours of writing and webpage creation and video production… and that’s only for the course promotion! That doesn’t even include the backend of a launch -- delivering the program, giving live Q&A calls, managing an online community, and whatever else you are planning on doing within the program to blow your customers minds. If launching is a significant part of your business’ revenue, then you know it’s kind of like childbirth. (I have not birthed a child by the way, but the stories from my mama friends goes a little like this -- When you’re in the middle of another wave of contractions you may swear that you will NEVER do this ever EVER again. But then a few months later with your beautiful baby in your arms, you’re already thinking about the name of your next one.In the middle of your launch, making last minute changes to an email going out to a whole bunch of people in just a few minutes… you may be feeling haggard. Exhausted. And just fucking done. Desperate to find another business model than an online business reliant on quarterly or monthly online program launches. And trust me, you don’t want your next launch to have all that negative energy when your awesome new product is just barely out in the world. So today, I’m sharing a tool that I use to make launches more in the flow for the businesses we work with. It’s called the 8 Phases of a Numinous Launch, and I think it’s a total game-changer. It completely rewrites the story of launches being a time for high anxiety, burnout, and turnover rates. And by turnover rates, I mean the fact that you can’t keep people on your team because you’re burning them out expecting them to be “on” 24/7 during launches. All of these things are actually preventable. The main reason why they happen for so many businesses is that most business owners only look at and prepare for HALF of an online launch… and without the other half you will continue with an endless cycle of push, push, push! burn out.The 8 Phases of a Numinous Launch uses the phases of the moon to help guide you toward a launch with built-in time to evaluate your progress, congratulate yourself and your team on hard work, and have time to rest and decompress. And I think you’ll find that building these into your launch in an organized way can actually make your launch bigger and way more successful than you believed possible, because you and your team will be coming to the table with way more energy, excitement, tapped into your juicy magic, and able to do the hard work.If you want this all written up for you go to thedirtyalchemy.com/phases And grab my 8 Phases guide, totally free. From my own experience and the experiences of the businesses I work with, I know this can be a deeply transformative tool that can save you so much time, energy, and stress.Whether you lead moon circles, or you only know about the moon from 4th grade science class and randomly staring up into the sky, most of us know that the moon cycles from new to full and back again. The cycles of Nature were once inherent in our culture and somatically known by every member of society.Decades of electric lighting in our homes, heating and cooling to buffer from the weather, and global shipping of food & any item under the sun, this has all divorced us from nature and our deep connection to her cycles. But if you’re listening to this podcast then you are most likely already making strides to connect your body, mind, and spirit back to our earth and sky. When we base our online launches on the cycles of Nature, we give ourselves and our teams what is truly needed in our physical plane. Though the internet is always “on,” our bodies and minds need rest. Factoring this into our businesses and our project plans allow us to have sustainable growth, instead of extreme growth followed by burn out (and what is burn out other than rest that our body forces us to take because we didn’t make time for it in the first place). So if you have experienced adrenal fatigue, burn out, or have had continual turn-over in your team because “they aren’t fast enough” or “committed enough” or they think you’re a crazy person…This is for you. While a typical moon cycle is 29.5 days, Your launch will most likely be much longer than that.Online launches from first design to completion are usually 2-3 months, or 2-3 moon cycles, so the New Moon phase of your launch will take 1-2 weeks, versus a few days like you see it in the sky. So you’ll be Expanding each phase to your needs, but the importance here is to not skip a phase. And again, you can get this all written up, calendar & dates of lunar phases & all at thedirtyalchemy.com/phasesSo let’s start with the New MoonThe new moon is a seed planted under the earth, bursting with life. It is dark and unseen but it is full of potential. Now is the time to dream and vision. this is the time to reflect on your past launches with sober eyes. This is also a time of retreat. Take time to be with yourself & make your plans from your own deep knowing instead of searching Google or asking a friend. Our theme for the new moon phase is: Setting IntentionsSo what this looks like in a launch is:Taking time away from outside influences (like social media, friends, your team)Naming your intentionReflecting on past launchesWriting down your goals (making it measurable)Designing your project planSetting your timelineWith the excitement of a new project, you may be tempted to get started before the plan is fully formed. Take the time to really tap into your intuition and see what you’re trying to create through this project, and how it fits into your 3-year vision.Onto the Waxing CrescentOur Theme here is: Taking ActionThe waxing moon is gaining energy. Now is the time to start taking actions on the intentions that you set. Just as energy is flowing in your projects, it is time to start teasing your upcoming launch to your audience. To Do’s here are: Starting on your project plan - writing, building pages, graphic designTeasing your upcoming launch to your audienceGiving value to your audience that is relevant to your upcoming launchYour Facebook ads may start promoting your launch-relevant lead magnetThere’s a lot of energy during this time, so make sure you connect back to the intentions and plans you made during the new moon phase instead of letting your enthusiasm take you off course.Next up is the First Quarter phase of the moonWith the Theme: Continued Action, Facing ChallengesSo You’re halfway to the full moon and gaining momentum in your project plan. With half of the moon in light and half in shadow, now is when obstacles start to pop up that you must face. The best way to handle this phase is to be flexible. With your original intentions in mind, make decisions that are aligned with your inspired goals. The aligned actions are:Making a daily to do list & crossing things off as you do themFinishing first and second drafts of all copy, pages, and funnelsAnd as challenges pop up, making decisions quicklyBe vigilant with your project management system (whether that’s Asana, or Trello or some other thing) so that you can use your launch as a template for future launches, and so your team has structure in place as tasks get more complex or when plans changeAnd you can actually purchase the project plan template we use for all the launches we manage for clients - check the show notes for more info on thatAnd then also in this phase - Facebook ads may start promoting your webinar, video series, or challenge or whatever other launch event you’re doing to give value for your launchYou are likely to push yourself pretty hard during this period, so make sure to have systems in place to lighten your load in other areas of life. Look into healthy meal delivery, hire a house cleaner, and ask your husband or mom if they can lend a hand with the kids.Next is Waxing GibbousThis is all about: Refining, & PatienceThis is The final phase before the full moon, it’s time to focus on editing and refining our goals, tasks, and projects. Plans don’t always work out how you originally designed them to, so this is the time to make changes. And with your launch going live soon, this is the time to do final checks on what will be going out into the world.Your waxing gibbous To Dos are: Final edits on all copyAssigning the task of “quality assurance” to one member of your team, to thoroughly go over every email, link, webpage, and graphicAnd Having your tech person test each step in the funnelThings may come up in this phase that need addressing. Don’t shy away from change at this time — embrace it! Ask yourself, what do I need to give up? Where do I need to change direction? How can we edit our plans? And finally - the full Full MoonCelebration & TensionThe full moon occurs when the moon is in opposition to the sun, in the opposite zodiac sign. At the peak of energy we’re asked to find balance between two extremes. Now is not a great time to make drastic decisions, but to instead reap the rewards of all of the work that you’ve done. This is when you’ll: Host your live webinar, video series, or challengeOpen doors to enroll in your online program! YayAnd super important - Everyday, do things that help manage your emotions (e.g., go for walks, journal, call your best friend, eat healthy food)Now is the time to receive the bounty of all the work that you’ve put in! Ask yourself: Am I truly open to receiving? What are my deepest fears around actually getting what I say I want? But… the full moon is only halfway through this process! There are a shit ton of things left to do & phases to go through before you’re done with your numinous launch.Onto the Waning Gibbous phaseTheme here is: Gratitude & GivingThe moon is starting to wane after the full moon. You’ve completed your open cart period and you have a new group of students/members/customers & the revenue to show for it! You’re feeling full of love and maybe a bit of relief. This is when you: Close enrollment on your launchLove up on all of your new customers and clients!Humbly thank your team and your family for supporting you through the launchBe generous with yourself as well (whatever that means for you)And Now is a great time to give bonuses to your team, gifts to your spouse, whether it’s time off, a night out, or another token of gratitudeBut don’t be frivolous in your spending. Be generous, but don’t break the bank! If you overcame any challenges over these last few weeks, acknowledge yourself and treat yourself to your own generosity. The Third Quarter phase is nextAll about Release & ForgivenessAgain, the moon is half light and half shadow, halfway on its journey from full to new. This is a time when tensions may be glaring & it is time to face them head on. To prepare yourself for the next new moon, the next time of setting intentions, you must look at what has happened throughout this cycle and make amends, forgive, and let go.Your To Dos are: Doing final numbers and accounting for your launch (after the refund period is over)Journaling on what worked and what didn’t workHaving Open communication between you and your team on how the launch went, the wins and the failures to learn fromForgive those who let you down, hurt you, made you angry... & forgive yourself for any missteps you madeAnd a perfect action for the third quarter phase is to Clean! Your house, your desktop, your closet… The energy of this time is absolutely supported by cleaning your physical environment & if it was a big launch it could be very likely that you weren’t paying attention to how messy your house became over the last few weeks. At this time, Be very gentle with yourself. A lot of people would rather numb out than be fully present in uncomfortable feelings. Instead, treat yourself with plenty of pleasurable self care and see this as a time of epic growth & evolution (because it is).So onto Waning CrescentRecuperation & ReflectionTHis is The final phase of the lunar cycle, or our 8 phase launch cycle. This is not a time for action or planning, this is a time of true recuperation. If you expect to be your best self for your team, your customers, your audience, and the whole slew of people reliant on you completely separate of your business, then take this phase very very seriously. This is the phase you will be most likely to skip or “forget”.This is when youCatch up on sleepCook nourishing mealsSpend time with people you loveSchedule hours (or days if you can) away from anything digitalDo activities you find relaxing and funYou may be someone who thinks that work is your favorite fun activity... Well, I invite you to challenge this idea. If you fall into the “I love to work” category, think critically about what other areas of your life you find joy in, and work to give those areas the time and attention they didn’t get while you were preparing for your launch. If you look into the biographies of many “geniuses,” you will find that many of their greatest ideas come when they were not working. Give yourself & your audience your greatest ideas and teachings by letting go of the identity of “I love to work so I’m going to work all the time.” It’s great to love your work & your business, but it’s important to balance that with the rest of your life to avoid burnout. And you’ll be way more willing to launch your next brilliant idea when you don’t dread the launch process.Again, if you want all of this written up for you go to thedirtyalchemy.com/phases and grab your copy of the 8 Phases of a Numinous Launch Guide. This process can be used whether or not you’re conscious of when new and full moons occur. You do not have to plan your launches to coincide with the moon cycle. And that’s all for today, friends. I’ll see you next week where we’ll talk more about magical marketing and your business as a magical practice.Music: Gaena by Blue Dot Sessions is licensed under a Attribution-NonCommercial License.
Raphan Kebe is a wonderful teacher of movement, with his own distinctive style called Space and Flow. We connected via movement but formed a friendship though honesty and humility. His honesty and creativity are just some of the things that inspire me the most about him. We met over the airwaves, and dived into an incredibly honest and brave conversation about who we are and why we are. We spoke of things like:

“All the stuff from my past became my biggest asset — not my biggest enemy — and that really empowered me to keep moving forward.”Mike Kemski wasn’t raised with a lot of love as a child. Instead, he was repeatedly told that he was worthless and would amount to anything. Thanks to these repeated messages, which were reinforced by his home environment, he began to believe those words were true.As a result, Mike got into all sorts of trouble as a kid. He turned to violence, alcohol, and drugs to escape the pain until, aged 16, he was full of anger and consumed with low self-esteem and self image.Eventually, he checked himself into rehab and things started to change. But that wasn’t yet the final turning point. After cleaning up and getting sober, Mike still didn’t feel happy. Instead, he felt an empty void inside. He just couldn’t figure out how to make life work for him. Instead, every day was painful, meaningless, and difficult. So he put a loaded gun into his mouth. But instead of ending it all, the gun misfired giving Mike a fresh chance at life.Which he’s now turned around into his own version of extraordinary.“If you feel it in your heart, that’s the thing to follow. Always. Not what everyone else says you should and shouldn’t want. That’s ridiculous.”Mike Kemski is a bit of an enigma! You won’t find much about him online, but that’s by design.Mike is a ninja who teaches what he himself has figured out through living life.At the age of 17, he realized you could change the way you feel simply by changing your facial expression or body languageHe’s developed insane levels of self awareness by spending years analyzing every thought and feeling - so he could understand the messages from his bodyHe discovered that amplifying pain is a fast-track to success because it increases your desire for changeAnd he figured out how to use energy and attention to change your thinking and transform the way you feel about yourselfMike is a legend and this is one episode you do NOT want to miss.As well as the full story of Mike’s dance with death, you’ll also discover three powerful analogies that are going to help you win in life. What’s really in the pot of gold at the end of the rainbowThe marathon example that explains the three phases of successWhy we retreat to ‘dark caves’ - and how you can bring yourself back to the lightThis episode is a doozy. It’s inspiring as well as informative and there’s a good chance that after listening, your life won’t be the same again.“Things need to go wrong.
