76: Is A Raw Vegan Diet Actually Healthy? with Chef Lena Ropp

Maybe when you were young you heard that it was important to eat your fruits and vegetables. But what if… fruits & vegetables were the ONLY foods that you ate?  If you're listening to this in November of 2021, you may have noticed more and more brands hopping on “plant-based” and “vegan” trends. What's that all about? Is it just another trend? Or could this truly be something life (and planet) changing?  Plant-Based Chef Lena Ropp shares with us the power within a lifestyle that is not only fully vegan, but also raw. Lena's been following a raw vegan diet for the past 7.5 years, along with her husband, children, and even their dog!  It turns out there's quite a bit of misinformation on nutritional advice out there. While this is by no means a conclusive guide to nutrition, it certainly sheds a lot of light on the food industry and the power of plants.    Topics we touch on:  Raw vegan versus whole food plant-based Lena's journey to raw vegan after growing up in Kazakhstan How we've been misinformed as a society  Dogs can be vegan too! Are your sustainability practices sustainable? Not just in terms of how they impact the planet, but how they impact YOU! Living “sustainably”, “eco-friendly”, and “zero-waste” are so trendy at the moment, but the reality is that these terms are so much bigger than a short-term trend. These are practices that, if they can become a normal part of our daily lives, will have an enormous impact on the planet! So, how do we do that? By adopting practices that feel good to us on an individual level. If it doesn't resonate with you, will you really stick with it? Probably not.. which means, it's not very sustainable!  This is just one of the topics we talk about today with sustainability blogger, Miah Ké-leigh. Miah, joining us from across the globe in the Netherlands, sat down to talk about her journey creating content in the sustainability space and more.   One of my favorite takeaways from this episode is applicable to everyone, but especially those of us that love the outdoors. Miah says, “You'll start to realize how much the earth actually impacts your hobbies and lifestyle. And if you take care of it, you don't actually have to give anything up.” For us to continue to enjoy nature and do the sports we love, taking care of the environment is just a given! Sustainable living doesn't have to be overly complicated. And certainly we ALL can make a positive impact.    Other topics we touch on:  Sustainable Travel - does it exist? Eco and Sustainability Blogging Growth in your personal sustainability journey How social media can be a blessing and a hindrance  Have the conversations with people - keep it alive Mental & emotional health shouldn't suffer from sustainable practices - combating eco-anxiety Figuring out where you fit into the eco-movement - and how to stay true to you in the process Femininity and Color in Sustainability Greenwashing: how to avoid it - do your research Continued learning - using social media as a resource to learn more    Connect with Miah online:  https://instagram.com/earthtomiah https://www.earthtomiah.com/   We still have a few spots left for our Surf & Yoga Wellness Retreat this December! Are you cycle smart? Regardless of whether you identify with having a menstrual cycle or not, this episode holds SO much value for YOU! Why? Because chances are - you know someone who does have a menstrual cycle, and this information is LIFE CHANGING.  Maddie Miles is an integrative health practitioner, hormone guru, and founder of Peace Love Hormones. Having been diagnosed with many illnesses caused her hormone imbalance, but her education in integrative medicine helped her find something that suits her best. In this episode, she tells what factors affect a woman's menstrual cycle and how to work around them. The Intricacies of Female Hormones Menstruation is something every woman goes through monthly, and it affects everything. A woman's metabolism, mood, creativity, social skills, libido, and fertility can all be traced back to their hormones. However, menstruation is not the same for everyone; premenopausal women do not experience the same as menopausal women. The problem is the lack of normalcy in discussions, so women are often left to their own devices to manage their hormones. Sex education classes are also not very extensive in terms of the menstrual cycle. This is the reason why Maddie is so passionate about helping women. From her own experience, she also struggled to find a way to work around her period. Her background in integrative medicine greatly benefitted her and eventually made her decide to become a hormone guru.  Taboo and Stigma Many people feel awkward and shy away from conversations around menstruation. The discussion is often brushed off as something inappropriate when in actuality, it is not. Due to this fact, many are very uninformed when a woman experiences her period, especially men. Worse, they dismiss it as women trying to escape whatever they are doing when the truth is their hormones are making them suffer. Maddie made it her life's mission to educate as many people as possible, both men and women. She envisions a future where everyone understands that menstruation is a normal function in a woman's body. Maddie believes that with the right education, women can take full control of their hormones. About Maddie Miles: Maddie Miles is the founder and CEO of PLH, a brand that educates and empowers menstruators to take back control of their health through education and top-quality supplements.  Maddie created PLH after going through the wringer with her health. She was diagnosed with anxiety, depression, insomnia, anorexia, and even Lyme Disease during her young adult life. Maddie was able to heal her body, spirit, and mind naturally, and now it is her mission to help others do the same. There's something in your life that's just… fine. Some days, it's actually pretty good. But you can't get rid of the nagging feeling that there's something missing. You're craving more. You feel stuck. You're hesitant to give up your “safety net” (i.e. your current job, relationship, home, etc.) because what you have now is safe. You know how it all works. Even if it's not totally fulfilling, it's comfortable. Crisis averted. But…  What if your “safety net” is actually the EXACT thing keeping you in a creative drought? What if giving it up meant that you would now have space to allow something else in… dare I say, something better?  We have a limited capacity for how much we can hold in our brains. Getting rid of something creates fresh space for creative energy and new opportunities to be let in.  Easier said than done, right? Stepping into the unknown is scary and uncomfortable. And yet, it's often there that the most growth occurs.   Can you allow yourself to be uncomfortable long enough to discover something you never knew about yourself? Or for an opportunity to present itself that you never knew was possible for you?  You will never know what could be next for you if you don't have the space to make that choice. When you no longer have a fallback option, you are forced to grow. You MUST make a choice. No matter what - you're moving forward.  Tune in to hear my personal experience with this and how I'm growing through it!    Connect with Natalie! You don't have to be a Fortune 500 business owner to begin to outsource. In fact, you don't even need to HAVE a business! Are you a busy person? Great - then outsourcing may be a total game-changer for you.  Entrepreneurs will always have an ego; that's why they go in their own ways and have the guts to do it. But that ego can get in the way of productivity and progress. How? Today, in Here for More, Rachel Luther of Check Off Your List (COYL) joins us to explain that problem. Rachel will help us understand what outsourcing is, how one can determine what they need to outsource, who outsourcing is for, and the benefits outsourcing gives to someone's life. As an entrepreneur herself, for Rachel, managing multiple business areas shouldn't fall under one hat alone. Sometimes, you losing control of things might just be what your business needs. Learn more about the business in outsourcing in this episode of Here for More Podcast with guest Rachel Luther! When outsourcing, where do you start? As a mother, a wife, and a businesswoman, having more than usual for a day's work is a typical scenario for Rachel. This means she starts her day very early in the morning and ends it around eleven at night. Rachel does this for days and weeks, and a lot can relate to this kind of setting. For some, it can cause a ‘break' in some aspects of their life. What's even more unideal is when it starts to affect work. For Rachel, when the overwhelm starts settling in, that's when you need to evaluate your flow. She goes back to her to-do list. By assessing the things she needs to accomplish and prioritize out of her list, Rachel gets to spend time examining the things that require the most among her many priorities. If something is getting put off for way too long, that can help raise questions. Can you do this now? How long is this going to take? Do you need to outsource more? Or do you maybe need to say “no” to some things? Going back to your list, your priorities, and really giving yourself time to dissect each task that you need to finish will help you gain the clarity over this overwhelm that will get you. Hear more tips from Rachel Luther regarding outsourcing in this episode of Here for More Podcast! About Rachel Luther: Rachel Luther is an entrepreneur who was a virtual assistant before people knew what the term meant. “Your busy-ness is legitimate, but there could be a way to live your life a little more intentionally” - NK (a.k.a... me!) I'm back with another solo episode and we're diving into intentional living, inspired by Tim Ferriss' book, The 4-Hour Workweek. I get it! You're busy. Our culture THRIVES on us being busy. But are we filling our time with things we actually NEED to be doing? Could someone else do them for us? Could we just get rid of some things altogether? My guess is... YES.  We so often do things (go to school, choose a career, start a family, etc.) because that's what makes sense. That's what we're “supposed” to do. But are these things that are best serving YOU? Maybe… but maybe not.  Ask yourself these questions:  What does the very BEST version of your life look like? Where are you? What are you doing? Who are you with? How do you spend your time? What are you excited about?  What if you could only work 2 hours per day? Where would you scale back?   What if you won the lottery? What would you do with all that free time now that you don't have to work for financial security?  This episode dives into all this and MORE. 66: Moving Past the Haters to Get Your Message Out Into the World, with Ashley Renne

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 6, 2021 61:42

“There's no point in being an activist and an advocate if nobody's receiving the message. ” This was an important realization Ashley Renne had as she began to pivot her career towards her newfound passion.  Ashley Renne is a professional content creator, keynote speaker, on-camera host, environmental activist, and vegan lifestyle advocate (and mother!) with certs in both "Plant-based Nutrition" and "Food & Sustainability" from Cornell. Her travels gave her different perspectives, which led her to start blogging about the places she visits. In this episode, Ashley goes over how she merges her environmental advocacy into her travel content while ignoring what the haters throw at her. Realization in Bali It was a regular trip to Bali, Indonesia, when Ashley opened her eyes to the truth. She saw what pictures on the internet showed – fine sand, lush greenery, pristine beaches, coconut trees, and the calm waters of the tropics. There is one thing she did not anticipate, though: trash. The pollution problem was at its peak; her feet were literally stepping over piles of trash. Because of that experience, Ashley was awakened to the reality that caused climate change. It transformed her life and the trajectory of her career. As a result, Ashley started to get interested in sustainability and wrote an article about Bali exposing the ills brought by pollution. The downside was that her writing was not met with great reception. Ashley was dragged on the internet. She got scared of talking about environmentalism for some time, but she realized posting beautiful travel photos was not her thing. Ashley pushed on creating content about the topic with the hope of educating people and, ultimately, urge them to help save the environment. The Vegan Lifestyle Ashley discovered veganism accidentally when a vegan influencer's post showed up on her timeline out of nowhere. It showed a video about a cow chasing a trap where her calf was. She saw the inhumane ways in the dairy industry – cows forcibly impregnated to produce milk, hens made to lay eggs, and more. As she went down the rabbit hole, it convinced Ashley to take the vegan lifestyle. Starting to incorporate this in her content gathered backlash from non-vegans. Despite the debate on veganism, Ashley took courses on food-based nutrition and food sustainably from Cornell University. She uses this knowledge to educate people without seeming preachy to encourage them rather than discourage them. About Ashley Renne: Since becoming a full-time content creator, Ashley has completely rebranded from a travel blog named “Travel Lushes” to her self-titled personal brand Hey Ashley Renne. She left her “glamorous” travel influencer career in 2019 to reduce her carbon footprint and instead educate people about sustainable living, became a host on the Smart. Healthy. Green. Living streaming channel (SHG Living), joined the Creative Council board of Climate Power 2020 and started volunteering as a Wildlife Transporter. Ashley has built a platform that hopefully inspires everyone to bridge individual action with systemic change to help end animal exploitation, protect our natural environment, and improve health through sustainable, plant-based lifestyle changes – especially in communities of color which tend to be disproportionately impacted by climate change and health problems.   Outline of the Episode: [04:11] Impacts brought by Ashley's travels [09:24] A professional videographer and editor turned full-time travel blogger [12:27] Consistency and experimentation as factors to build rapport and community [20:33] Transition to veganism and a more sustainable lifestyle [33:19] Journey as a vegan mother and debunking non-vegan sentiments [42:44] Ashley's approach to sharing vegan content without being righteous [50:12] How to travel in a much sustainable means without stopping travel altogether   Connect with Ashley: Website: http://www.travellushes.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heyashleyrenne/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/heyashleyrenne   Resources Mentioned in the Episode: Find eco-friendly hotels: https://www.greenpearls.com/ Sustainable Tourism: https://wayaj.com/ Get your Plant-Based Nutrition Certification from eCornell! : https://ecornell.cornell.edu/certificates/nutrition/plant-based-nutrition/     Connect with Natalie! “We forget that food is the most powerful drug that we put in our body three to four times a day.” - Lonny James Ruben.  Lonny James is the owner of Bunny James Boxes, a leader in food tribe-based gifting. Born in a family with diet restrictions, it gave him the idea of allowing people to receive food gifts that fit their diet. In this episode, Lonny narrates how he took inspiration from his family's food story in building his business. Food for Everyone Lonny grew up in a family with specific food restrictions and preferences. He is lactose intolerant; he has a vegan brother, a celiac sister, and a diabetic father. Moreover, his mother is allergic to eggs, avocados, bananas, and other food, and another sister is allergic to chocolate. For health reasons, meals with the family have been a hassle to Lonny. It even went to the point where his mother has to prepare separate dinners for each member of the family. This situation sparked Lonny to start a gifting company that considers what others can and cannot eat. The rationale behind it is to allow everyone to receive a gift that fits their diet. It is Lonny's way of having an inclusive take when it comes to food. As a result, he has enabled people to embrace their different eating styles. Moving Towards Sustainability In an effort to become carbon neutral, Lonny goes the extra mile in having an alternative to their packaging that is environmentally friendly. Seeing the effects of climate change making itself evident is the driving force behind it. Additionally, Lonny explains that companies with sustainability in their principles are able to survive as a business as opposed to those without. People are also drawn into companies with sustainability goals as he observed that traffic on their website is always congested on the About Us page. Lonny is now in the process of shifting to 100 percent biodegradable packaging. While the technology is on the expensive side at the moment, he believes it is worth the price.    Outline of the Episode: [02:48] What a food tribe is and why inclusivity is important to the brand [06:07] Evolution of Lonny's family dinners as they learn about their food restrictions [11:21] Changes, preferences, and backlash over certain diets [21:53] Sustainability incorporated into the brand subconsciously [30:44] “Pray for the haters, love the struggle” [33:35] Fear of failure as the reason to keep going [37:52] Origin story of the company name, “Bunny James”   Resources: Website: https://bunnyjamesboxes.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mrbunnyjames/ Personal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/lonnyjames/ TikTok: @mrbunnyjames   Connect with Natalie! But the goal is not to shove the other out or pretend it doesn't exist.  By recognizing that with every negative thought, the positive opposite exists as well, and vice versa, we can begin to purposefully shift our lives to a more positive light.

Today we're talking all things Law of Attraction and more importantly, why YOU should care about it.  I'm sharing some of my favorite parts of the book, Ask and It Is Given by Jerry & Esther Hicks, to reinforce the concept - “where thoughts go, energy flows”. In other words, the only reason that anything comes into your life is because your thoughts made it so. Our thoughts and energy must be a vibrational match with the energy of our desire for it to manifest into existence… but how do we know if we are a vibrational match? And if we're not, how do we change that?? If bad things happen in our lives, are we manifesting those as well? This episode dives into all of this and more!   Outline of the Episode: [3:20] Intro to the idea of the Law of Attraction and how it can change your life [6:05] What are the vibrations that you're putting out? That's what you're allowing for in your life [6:30] The three-step process according to “Ask and It Is Given by Jerry and Ester Hicks” - how everything in the universe works [8:18] Focusing on Step 3 ~ how to allow things into our lives [9:44] "Worry is using your imagination to create something you do not want” [15:15] It is actually that simple + real-life examples [18:36] How to understand when you're in the right place [19:19] What are the feelings of misalignment [20:48] The two important things that are going to help the desire manifest into your life: Knowing what you want, and then knowing why you want it [23:17] Recap of the main themes of the episode [24:33] Both a challenging and yet rewarding process   Connect with Natalie! When society told us to check a box, we panicked. But now, we celebrate!  For the second installment of this special two-part episode, Natalie and Jess discuss where they are headed. They talk about the future and the things they currently work on. In this episode, Natalie and Jess also share the lessons they learned along the way that now play a role in their married life. Things Falling Into Place It has been a year since Natalie started the podcast. Going forward, Jess is now a full-time co-producer of the show. Being tech-savvy himself, Jess will now be around to help with editing and backend stuff. Jess has been helping Natalie with editing since episode 56, and now he is getting the full gear. He has some ideas to add, especially with marketing, having fun, and being creative. Jess is passionate and innovative with technology from a digital standpoint, so he is excited to apply what he knows and learn along the way. Another thing that fits the puzzle is their Surf & Yoga Wellness Retreat, which will occur in December. It is definitely a “couple goal” achieved for Natalie and Jess as they integrated nature, travel, and wellness into one activity. Overall, they are now hand in hand in carrying out their passions and business in one.  Core Beliefs Throughout their journey, Natalie and Jess had core beliefs that set the course they are headed. It becomes their foundation, but over time, it changes. For example, Jess shares that he once had socially acceptable core beliefs – climb the ladder, jump through hoops, and do a nine-to-five job. Getting into the corporate workplace is the norm, but confidence made Jess change these core beliefs. He believes that it is wrong to allow society to steer your course of action. Jess eliminated those beliefs for himself. Long story short, experience is one factor that will make or break a core belief. There is nothing wrong with dealing with changes as long as it is for the better.  Outline of the Episode: [01:41] A short episode preview and recap of the previous episode [03:20] Jess, the new co-producer of Here For More Podcast [06:00] First Surf & Yoga Wellness Retreat planned for December [09:08] Acknowledgement of the time it took for the couple to grow the podcast and retreat [14:30] Core beliefs that evolved along the way as they go [18:10] “Taking some power back into our own hands” [23:42] Hardwork in exchange for a version of life they aspired to live [26:43] The power to ask for help and outsource people to do tasks 80 percent as good as you [29:08] Therapy as a crucial aspect to keep mental health in check [31:11] Plans of going back to Hawaii in the future   Connect with Natalie! 58: Stepping Away From Hustle Culture To Make A Bigger Impact, with Manuela Barón

“There is value in the things that don't always get rewards. It's not up to you to save the world, but the little things you do really can save the world.” - Manuela Barón, The Girl Gone Green Manuela is a sustainability activist whose goal is to communicate how everyone can help the planet. In her travels, she realized the problem the world faces – trash. That was the trigger to her lifestyle change. In this episode, Manuela maps out the path she took towards the sustainability agenda.   Eye-Opening Experience At 18, Manuela transferred to Paris to figure out what she wanted to do in life. In her mind, the decision to move abroad was romanticized, but the reality was far from the expectation. Manuela was exposed to the minimalist lifestyle, from fashion to meals. She noticed that Parisian women barely wear makeup and can whip up elaborate four-course meals using a single pot. Her observation made her look inward, and that was the moment Manuela decided to explore and learn from other cultures through travel. From that, she was able to pinpoint a recurring problem wherever she goes – trash. There was plastic pollution in Morocco; cigarette butts were scattered in Paris; Vietnam has a headache with soda cans. That made Manuela think of going for sustainable living as her own initiative to lessen her impact on the global trash crisis. It was a process of trial and error, but in the end, she successfully spread her advocacy through her social media platform.    Keeping It Balanced Obsession for her newfound purpose was the flame that kept Manuela working on her advocacy. Then, a day after her college graduation, she flew to Bali, Indonesia, where she saw firsthand the plastic emergency happening there. Manuela secured a discourse with someone related to the Indonesian president regarding the situation. After that, she went to Malaysia for palm oil. Manuela was living the dream, yet there was a missing link. She was lonely, not taking care of her health, and not eating well because she was too focused on becoming plastic-free and vegan. Despite it taking a toll on her health, Manuela still ignored it and went to Thailand and Hong Kong. That went on for six months until Manuela had her breaking point and admitted to herself that she was, in fact, not well. At that moment, she realized that to continue her work, she also needs to take care of herself. Now, Manuela manages her time well, working on her advocacy while keeping herself healthy. She has also defined her boundaries of when to say no and have time to pause and rest.   About Manuela Barón: Manuela Barón is a Colombian-American with a passion for sustainability. In 2015, her world travels exposed her to the earth's plea for change. Surrounded by plastic pollution, she vowed to change her habits to help the environment. Manuela dove straight into the challenge of going to Zero Waste. Through that journey, she learned about the magnitude of the environmental crisis. Emboldened by other environmentalists, Manuela creates visuals to teach others about the issues. The Girl Gone Green is a platform to educate and bring awareness on eco-issues & solutions. It is a community with an emphasis on sustainability and conscious living. Manuela is the Girl Gone Green, and everyone can make little steps towards a better world. Let's be a conscious community!   Outline of the Episode: [02:17] How sustainability became a vital part of Manuela's life [05:48] A positive mindset to balance everything without feeling overwhelmed [12:20] The connection between sustainable practices and personal growth [19:26] Boundaries on when to work on the advocacy and when to say no [28:59] Advice for a more sustainable means to travel [35:50] Strategies to start your journey towards a sustainable lifestyle   Resources: Instagram: https://instagram.com/thegirlgonegreen/ Website: http://www.thegirlgonegreen.com/   Connect with Natalie! 57: Using the Enneagram to Rediscover Yourself, with Stephanie Smith

By understanding the Enneagram, you learn about yourself and others, allowing you to navigate your relationships, work, and life more successfully.   Stephanie Smith stumbled upon the Enneagram about five years ago and instantly fell in love with it. Her obsession with it helped her grow personally and in business. In this episode, Stephanie introduces the Enneagram to understand oneself and become the best version. Personality Test The Enneagram consists of nine personality types. It is presented as a circle with numbers one to nine in a clockwise direction, nine at the top. Each number represents a personality type and is connected to two different numbers with lines that form a pattern. The two lines represent growth and stress, or integration and disintegration. Check out the link listed below for a visual of this! What is remarkable about the Enneagram is that it frees us out of the box rather than keeping us in. It shows two sides of the coin from where we are going – positive or negative. There are a few disclaimers with using the Enneagram, though. First, one should be aware of the other types aside from theirs to better understand and communicate. Second, we know ourselves by having an overview of the different types, so we have grace and compassion for other types. The third is not to stereotype the types and use your type as an excuse.  Nine Types There are nine types of personalities in the Enneagram. Each type is assigned by number and has a name that goes with it that best describes the essence. The nine types are the Reformer, the Helper, the Achiever, the Individualist, the Investigator, the Loyalist, the Enthusiast, the Challenger, and the Peacemaker. A lot of the types look similar, which results in some getting mistyped. To determine your type, it all comes down to the core motivation associated with that type. Another thing that makes it far more complex is the wing. These are the numbers adjacent to your assigned type. The wing is the shared characteristic with your primary type. Stephanie briefly goes over each type so listen carefully! About Stephanie Smith: Stephanie Smith is the daughter of two entrepreneurs from Colorado. In 2018, she walked away from a very coveted job as a flight attendant with American Airlines to work for herself. As a result, Stephanie moved into the top 3% of Mary Kay and earned her first free car.  Stephanie led a team of over 70 women to build successful businesses selling skincare and makeup. She learned how to be her own boss and coach others to succeed. In 2020, she started her coaching and mindset business, helping young adults answer the question “who am I?” Stephanie's passion is helping others find purpose and joy in every situation. Stephanie is a mindset and Enneagram coach helping young adults become more self-aware, grow their confidence, create healthy boundaries, and communicate with others more effectively all using the Enneagram. From former people pleaser to living life on her own terms, she has used the Enneagram to grow and encourages others to join her on this journey of self-development and self-awareness.   Outline of the Episode: [05:09] What is the Enneagram? Maybe people's opinions are less about you and more about them…  Join Natalie Kraus with Alexandra Wood as they chat about wellness, yoga, and sustainability. Alexandra decided to make a change for herself, but people's opinions gave her doubts. After a lot of thinking, she learned how to follow her heart's desires and block herself from what others say. In this episode, Alexandra gives the importance of trusting intuition and checking oneself from time to time. Trust Your Instincts Alexandra used to ask others' opinions and let those influence her. After some time, she noticed that what people think was not in line with what she wanted. Most of the views were discouraging her from trying. They do not understand her vision and perception of doing something out of her comfort zone. Because of this, Alexandra stopped asking people their thoughts on what she wants to do and left all the thinking to herself. Alexandra now lives her life according to her liking. She would not have done it if she listened to what other people said about it. Everyone has a different point of view of things. That is why doing what is best for yourself is the best thing to follow. The same goals can be achieved in different ways, and you get to decide on how to get there. Taking advice is a good thing, but it should make you feel at ease and not regret your decision. Living Intentionally and Sustainably Back in the day, Alexandra had so much stuff as a consequence of consumerism and trends. She realized that it was ridiculous, so she donated most of her belongings until she was left with a few. Alexandra began to embrace the minimalist lifestyle when she moved to New York. She was also dedicated to eliminating her plastic waste to zero. Having to live by the ocean made her appreciate nature which even kept her determination to the cause. Sustainability is hard to achieve, though, when consumerism is just around the corner. Alexandra had to be creative to prevent herself from buying unnecessary products. Sustainability has become a trend nowadays that many companies try to take advantage of it using their products. Alexandra is now focused on sharing her knowledge on living sustainably and saving money at the same time. Intentional living is about looking at ideas as to how you can live with the environment better. Doing so has a positive effect not only on you but also on society and nature. About Alexandra Wood: Alexandra Wood is a multi-faceted female creator and entrepreneur who finds inspiration through life experiences and the beauty that planet earth has to offer. She created the space back in 2017, at a time when she was a full-time yoga instructor, newly navigating her way in the industry to find a deeper connection with a community and be a wellness resource. Over the years, Alexandra's perspective on wellness and her work has evolved in many ways. Through experience and practice, she understands that wellness is not one-way-fits-all, and every living being is unique.  Alexandra believes that health should be defined as living your life to its fullest potential. Physical and mental health are deeply intertwined, and wellness should be viewed from a “whole” perspective. Green smoothies and face masks are cool and all, but wellness is so much more and sacred.  As she journey through life, Alexandra aspires to live authentically and create connection by sharing the beauty of vulnerability. Everyone is a human navigating the way through the journey of life, and she is excited to be here sharing her story with you.   Outline of the Episode: [04:29] Moving across the country, and eventually embracing the van life [08:27] Thought process of making big decisions [12:02] A look into Alexandra's entrepreneurship journey [15:56] Encountering opinions and concerns about stability and security [20:22] Advice on how to keep striving for life pursuits [21:54] What does balance look in Alexandra's perspective [23:55] The importance of sustainability and intentional living [29:47] How Alexandra balances her guilt in terms of unintentionally using plastic [33:12] Reality check: van life minus the Pinterest-worthy vibe [39:33] Alexandra's biggest gain out of everything she went through   Resources: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/__alexandrawood/ Website: https://alexandrawood.co/   Connect with Natalie! Grace has a mission: to help others find healing and vitality with the right food. In this episode, she speaks her mind about food and nutrition. She also gives tips for those who want to convert to a plant-based diet. Finding Passions Grace suffered from anorexia when she was 17. Going through recovery, she realized how mental and physical health influence each other. Grace also saw the importance of the food psychology business to improve the quality of life. Learning this made her find her purpose: to be a registered dietitian. Grace wanted to help others recover from eating disorders like what she went through. Passion for nutrition was the seed that grew roots. As it grew, Grace's passion branched out to sustainability. She became interested in environmental clubs, veganism, and food production. Eventually, Grace turned passions into fields of expertise in her work. Now, she champions wellness through nutrition and coping strategies. Passion was the fuel for Grace to keep going, and it is all thanks to her teenage experience that led her to where she is. Everything Goes Back to Nutrition Food affects everything in the body. The problem lies in biased researches spreading misconceptions. Grace revealed that the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics favors large food companies. Corporate sponsorships make sure that their products are deemed to have nutritional value. The politics involved within the Academy and these corporations is a red flag for the public. Misinformation confuses everyone while corporations secure revenue. To correct this, Grace is eager to research without bias. Through unbiased research, accurate conclusions are drawn. Examples would be the connection of nutrition to inflammation, heart health, and dermatology. Grace believes that nutrition must be a top priority. About Grace Pascale: Grace Pascale is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist with a life's mission to help others find healing and vitality by reforming their relationships to food and their bodies. Logan is a physical therapist, a cycling instructor, and an online sales coach who chose the path towards entrepreneurship over the healthcare industry. In this episode, she shares how she was able to harness the power of the online community to start an online business. Making the Choice Logan graduated as a physical therapist, and the next thing to do is get into practice. Yet, she chose something that is fulfilling for herself – she wants to do business. Logan did not like the idea of doing what most people do: wait for at least ten years to build up their finances and live comfortably. She did not want to spend ten years on something she was not passionate about in the first place. Logan knows she took Physical Therapy in school, but that is not the career she wanted to build. Taking advice from people who had the experience of what she wanted to do, Logan started learning about it. She also listened to podcasts. There were some doubts from people around her, but Logan shuts their opinion out and only welcomed those supporting her decision.  Mind Over Matter The mindset of being busy has been embedded since childhood as that is what parents are doing. Logan thinks that people always correlate doing something as a form of being productive, and it carries over that the person is hard on themselves. Being busy is always equated to being productive, when in fact, it is counterproductive. It leads to the person hating their job even when they love it, but the truth is they hate the life that their job allows them to live. People define themselves by their job, and it raises the question if they are fulfilled with the life that their job allows them to live. Logan's advice is to change the busy culture and to take time to breathe. Success should not be measured by how busy a person is.  About Logan Lynch… in the words of Logan:  “I am a sales coach for online coaches + service providers to help them make the idea of selling your services not so scary or confusing. I'm also a physical therapy private practice owner, so I have experience and knowledge around sales and marketing for both online businesses and brick and mortar. I love talking all things MONEY, especially when it comes to mindset and behaviors around it. In my free time I love to go to live concerts, preferably at the Red Rocks in Colorado, and go boating on the Mississippi.” Logan also hosts The Saucy Sales Show podcast, where she brings you HOT & SAUCY new topics to help entrepreneurs learn to LOVE sales instead of dreading it every day. If this was meant for you, the Universe wants you to get there.  Join Natalie Kraus with Chelsea Murn as they chat about how she built her six-figure coaching business without sacrificing her love for climbing and how she helps women take massive leaps in their performance through training, nutrition, mindset, hormone balancing, and more. Chelsea thinks she does not fit in the nine-to-five setup, so she went out of her way to try entrepreneurship and eventually got the hang of it. In this episode, Chelsea shares how she used her passion to become a business and its perks. Getting Into Climbing Chelsea discovered her passion for climbing when she took an outdoor education class in high school. It was similar to a gym class, and they were scaling up an indoor climbing wall. She thought to herself that it was not actually bad and she was not terrible at it. Her background in competitive swimming gave her the upper body strength she needed to climb up the wall, and she found it fun. As a result, Chelsea got a job at the same indoor climbing wall while attending college. She got hooked on the sport that she pushed herself further. She trained to climb indoors so that she can perform better when it comes to climbing outdoors. Chelsea enjoyed every bit of it that she finds ways to free up her time and climb a mountain. Now, she lives in Leavenworth, Washington, which has a ton of rock climbing spots that she does not climb indoors at this point in time.  Passion to Business Finding her passion is one thing; making it into a business is another. Chelsea did not see herself fit as a regular employee working in a nine-to-five job. She decided to get into entrepreneurship as a climbing coach, and the next thing she knew, it was a match made in heaven. Chelsea found her purpose: to teach people to grow their business. To scale her business further, she learned brain rewiring and coupled that with her climbing coaching. In such a short time, Chelsea was able to grow her business into a six-figure one. It was such an important milestone for Chelsea since she converted her passion into a business, and she enjoys every single moment. What's even more interesting is that Chelsea helps women better themselves with her programs. It receives good feedback as most women she helped were feeling less anxious, calmer, and optimistic. It shows that she is effective in her craft and can transform people, so she walks away as a happy coach.  About Chelsea Murn: Chelsea Murn has been climbing for 11 years and has been serious about getting better and improving her climbing for 8 of those years. After struggling for so long to actually move the needle on climbing, she finally found what worked (and what didn't along the way).  Chelsea teaches other ladies to achieve their goals in a fraction of times through training, nutrition, mindset, and hormone balancing to optimize their climbing performance.   Outline of the Episode: [05:03] How Chelsea got started into climbing before it became her business. Failure isn't anything special, it's just a part of life. It's how we learn and move forward. So keeping failing forward, keep learning, and keep saying YES.  Join Natalie Kraus with Austin and Janna Jenkins as they chat about their experience making a home out of a van, the challenges they faced, and the perks of living in it. Austin and Janna loved traveling, and because of this, the couple decided to get themselves a van to convert it into their cozy home. In this episode, Austin and Janna share their journey as a married couple building their van and the lessons they pick up along the way.   Building a Home Austin and Janna love to travel, and so they explore their options, from backpacking around Europe to working abroad. One thing they realized, though, is that the ideas they were thinking about are not sustainable. It's a good thing Austin and Janna found the solution to their dilemma through an Instagram post: jumping into the van life. Three months after their wedding, the couple bought their van and converted it into a house on wheels. It was perfect for them because they can get to travel along with their belongings. To expedite the project, Austin and Janna had to work two full-time jobs each and moved into the basement of Janna's parents' house that served as their apartment in the meantime. The two did not have any experience building a van, and so they were learning throughout the process. With that, Austin and Janna were able to deepen their relationship and fulfilled their desire to travel without hassle.   Living Small Transitioning from living in ample space to a 50 square foot home was not an issue for Austin and Janna, but they came across a bumpy road. The couple was worried about sizing down their wardrobe and their stuff a lot since they have limited closets and storage space. It was a challenge for them because it takes a lot of time, and it was the hardest thing to do, but they managed. Living in the van also made Austin and Janna realize that they could conserve their water consumption. If they can consume more when they were in the house, now 25 gallons of water can last for two weeks. Living small also made them connect more to the environment and became aware of their waste. They were able to fully install solar panels in their van, which saves them a lot of electricity. For Austin and Janna, it was the best decision for them to live in a van they call home as it had significant impacts on them that were not expected.   About Austin and Janna Jenkins: Austin and Janna Jenkins are both from Greeley, Colorado, where they met in high school and started dating when they were 16. They've been together ever since and got married in December 2018. The couple's fondness for traveling made them explore ten countries and 38 states. They even got engaged in the Netherlands and honeymooned in Italy.   As they dreamed of backpacking in Europe and hitchhiking across the states, the couple heard about people living and traveling in a van they built. Austin and Janna were in love with the idea, and so they bought a van in the summer of 2019. While converting the van, Austin and Janna worked two jobs and lived in the basement of Janna's parents' house. At present, the couple has moved into the newly converted van they built together.   Outline of the Episode: [03:55] Life before the van. [05:23] Building the van. Have you ever found yourself saying, “I'd love to, BUT ___ “? I would bet money that you have on more than one occasion. And I have, too! The thing is, the desires we have (or *think* we have) always come with a price. Sometimes the price involves an exchange of money, but often there are other factors adding to the cost as well. For example, you may say you want a puppy… but you're not currently in place to take on the vet bills, training, 24/7 attention, and more that a puppy needs. With this in mind, you may not *actually* want a puppy! At least, not right now… And that's great! Because you're recognizing what's important to you right at this moment. As a result, you end up moving towards your true desires and ultimately, end up with what you really want. This is the process of the “price of admission”. With practice, assessing the “price of admission” helps you become hyper-aware of the “price” of whatever it is you desire so you can define what you ACTUALLY want in your life. When you discover something you really do desire, you accept the price, and you DO IT. Talk about manifesting your dream life! Okay, but… where do I begin? That's where this episode comes in. Your partner can't be your therapist, but they can (& should) be a source of support and an advocate for you on your mental health journey. Kayla Roge is a certified Life Coach and knows mental health first hand. In this episode, she graciously opens up and shares her experience with anxiety and depression, as well as what that looks like in her relationship with her fiancé. As Kayla so eloquently states, the pandemic forced us to look at ourselves in ways we never had to before. As a result, struggles with mental health have been on the rise. And while relationships are the main focus of this conversation, it all starts with you. According to Kayla, “if you're not aware of yourself, you can't teach someone to be aware of you”. Your mental health is so important, and so is your partners. Being able to vocalize when anxiety or depression creeps in, or even just when something feels off, will allow your partner the opportunity to be a source of support. But remember - leave the therapy to the therapists! 39: It's Time to Stop Letting Perfectionism Hold You Back

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 5, 2020 42:31

Perfectionism is a never-ending chase. There's something you want to pursue, but you find that you're unqualified or not ready for one reason or another. As a result, you take no action, or you take steps that seem logical but aren't actually that thing (i.e. buying a podcast mic and planning your show but never actually publishing an episode). This puts you right back at square one - still wanting to pursue that thing.. and STILL unqualified. So, how does one all of a sudden feel qualified and ready to take on a goal? Well, you don't really! But you take action anyway. And you gain clarity and make progress from that action. Small, consistent action over time adds up to big results. Along with taking action, enjoying the process is just as important. You never know what the future holds. You have no idea what your goal will look like once you reach it or if you'll actually be as satisfied with the result as you're telling yourself you will be. By enjoying the journey, you take less pressure off the end result. You find a lightness and more contentment with where you're at right now, rather than constantly feeling like you're not doing or being enough. You're able to celebrate along the way and ultimately find more joy. Social media adds an interesting dynamic to today's perfectionism - it makes it THAT much harder to feel worthy since we now have access to seemingly perfect everything. We must remember that social media is a highlight reel. With that, we can continue to use it as a tool to connect with and empower each other. Post your favorite photos and show up as YOU. Know that you are enough and you are oh so worthy just as you are in this very moment. In this episode, I mention books Break the Good Girl Myth by Majo Molfino, and Big Magic by Elizabeth Gilbert. 35: Three Daily Practices to Make the Best of Hard Times

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 7, 2020 28:44

We've been living through some crazy times! But the reality is… there is always hardship. For every great season of life, you'll have to walk through a hard one. That's not negative thinking- that's just the ebb and flow of life! I wanted to give you three simple steps that you can come back to daily for renewed strength and positivity. These steps are an incredible practice for everyday life, but especially powerful for when you're walking through the hardest seasons and struggling the most. You won't be happy all the time, BUT you can ALWAYS choose positivity and gratitude. Follow these three steps daily to shift from negativity and doubt to fullness and light. Step 1: Ask yourself, “What is actually true”? Acknowledge the words you speak to yourself and to others. Recognize what is true within the hardship you are facing. Then, reframe what ISN'T. For example, if you tell yourself, “this is hard and I'll never make it through”, you can reframe this to, “Yes, this IS hard, BUT I will make it through!”. Because the reality is, you WILL. This doesn't take away from the challenges you are facing. Your feelings are VALID. But reframing your thoughts to a place of positivity and productivity will keep you moving forwards. Step 2: Protect and recharge your energy. Your energy is one of your most valuable assets. It's what keeps you going each day! If you are NOT taking time each day to do things for yourself that fill up your cup, such as a morning routine, daily movement, self-care, etc., you will have nothing left to give to anyone else. Especially, you will be left feeling extra drained and resentful of your current reality. Set boundaries for yourself. Take care of yourself BEFORE you answer to anyone else in your day. Move your body daily. Clock out when it's time to clock out. Honor yourself and you'll find that you're more okay than you think you are. Step 3: Embrace the present moment. THIS is the only moment you have for sure, so you better be making the most of it. No matter the hardship you're facing, there is always something to be grateful for. Make it a point to recognize all you can be grateful for at this very moment you're in. Practice this every single day, and watch as the gratitude begins to pour into your life. Dreaming and planning for the future is great, but THIS is the moment you get to exist in right now. If you're reading this, you have much to be grateful for. Do you enjoy learning from me? Discovering what your biggest curiosities and interests are, Finding permission within yourself to pursue said interests, and What happens along the way when your pursuit turns out to be not as great as you first thought... These are ALL concepts I have faced in my own life, which is why I am able to so passionately speak to them now. I've felt your fears! I still feel that doubt around lack of time, money, resources, and fear of failure. However, I've come to understand that as humans, we are ALWAYS evolving, which means our interests and curiosities are too! 27: Begin Before You're Ready, Then Trust The Timing

That's the thing about divine timing… you don't get to know when it's coming! This is why it is so important to be clear, directive, and intentional about what you decide to pursue. Your WHY is what will carry you through, especially in uncertain and challenging times. There's a difference between pursing “things” (aka, being busy ( aka, us as humans most of the time)), and pursuing a purpose backed by a strong why. There's also a difference between this idea of “divine timing” and the concept of “begin before you're ready”. Both are extremely important. You MUST begin when you get the idea, the passion, the opportunity… NOT wait until you “feel ready”. Yet it's not enough to begin. You must PERSIST. This is where divine timing comes in. You don't get to know when you'll get to where you want to be. You have to trust it. You have to have a WHY rooted so deep that when things get tough (as they inevitably will) you're able to keep pushing forward. ~  Join my insider tribe at wearehereformore.com Get started on your free 30 Day Gratitude Journal!  Follow along with me on Instagram at https://instagram.com/nataliejkraus Sending gratitude to Audible! 26: What it Means to Live in Alignment with Brittney Ellers

Did you know that our bodies run in cycles? Did you know that your body is extremely receptive to its surrounding environment? Have you thought about the ways in which aligning your life according to what cycle you're in could set you up for greater success and happiness? This is exactly what Brittney is here to share! A friend and fellow yoga teacher, Brittney is also an expert on all things pelvic floor physical therapy and female cycles. I asked her here to tell us about all things alignment, cycles, and taking control of our lives. While this episode is geared towards women, it absolutely applies to everyone in some capacity. Plus, it's all awesome information to know. We all struggle with something. During some cycles, things are harder than others. As Brittney notes, knowing WHY you are experiencing specific symptoms is huge. For one, you'll be able to address potential underlying issues and solve the symptoms at their root, rather than masking them with “bandaids”. Yet, what's arguably even more powerful is that knowing the WHY behind a symptom allows you to then work in partnership with your body to heal. It can be easy to think that things are happening to you and you have no control. I've been there, and it's frustrating! To be in partnership, or in alignment, with your body is empowering in a way you may have not considered before.
