Jason takes a trip to the new Tire Rack/Discount Tire/America's Tire testing facility in Texas: Treadwell Research Park. In addition to testing grip levels on BMWs and Jeeps on a monstrous wet skid pad, off-road course, rock crawling trail and more, he discovers the many lessons to be learned by carefully studying tire wear data – including how where you live can have a huge impact on how quickly you burn through your tires! === This episode is sponsored by Vyper Industrial — America's #1 rated shop chair, tool carts, and creepers, proudly made here in the US. Visit vyperindustrial.com and use code CARMUDGEON for $50 off. === In this episode, we learn that Tire Rack, America's Tire and Discount Tire are all the same thing! But, more importantly, they now have a giant tire testing facility in Texas: Treadwell Research Park – an expansive property with dirt and mud trails, rock crawling, water crossings, serious grades, an absolutely enormous skid pad (that can be completely submerged in 2 mm of water in no time thanks to a pair of huge reservoirs and some seriously powerful pumps) and even a wet slalom course. Jason experienced all Treadwell had to offer behind the wheel of a 4-door Jeep Wrangler and BMW 330i and reports back. We'll learn that at America's Discount Rack you can get free tire rotations (with tire purchase) and free flat repair (no purchase necessary!). But they don't hand out these services out of the kindness of their tire-loving hearts. It's all part of Treadwell's plan to collect and analyze all kinds of tire wear data to help customers make informed decisions when buying new tires and make better tires. They'll collect information about a tire's make, model, mileage, geographic location and more to find what compounds and tread patterns are best for specific use cases and guide customers to the best choice for their vehicle, driving style, climate, and location. For instance, they have discovered that folks living in twisty, hilly western Pennsylvania go through tires 20% faster than folks living in Nebraska. Derek suggests Treadwell implement a tire wear score so enthusiasts can compare notes and compete for total tire destruction domination. Similar to Treadwell Research Park (and Tire Rack's other testing facility in South Bend, Indiana), Derek had the chance to experience a flooded skid “pan” at the CHP's emergency vehicle operations course (EVOC) training grounds driving in Ford Crown Victorias and Dodge Chargers. Jason Fenske of Engineering Explained has been on a mission to teach the world about the importance of tires, and recently pitted a F80 BMW M3 Competition on mid-grade tires against a diesel Chysler PT Cruiser wearing fresh Continentals. Science ensued. Tires are indeed very important – and while some *coughpirellicough* will grip like no other, they tend to disintegrate in short order (and dramatically so). But they're not all bad – the guys have kind things to say about the Cinturato CN36 and CN12. But the Carmudgeon tire of choice remains Michelins and Vredsteins, which are mounted on everything from Jason's e-Golf, the Van, Jynah, the Ferrari 308, Derek's R129, and even Jake's wife's Crosstrek. The guys will also discuss the Avon CR6ZZ, Trofeos and Cup 2s. Plus the Michelin AS3+ on Jason's Mom's Golf that wore down unusually quickly – this right after he had just replaced some 2-year-old cracking Hankooks with them. Perhaps his mom's regular and sustained driving at 100 mph is to blame… We'll also cover cheap lighting from oh, oh, oh, O'Reilly's, Wagner halogens, and automotive lighting gemstones from Carello and Marchal. It's all in the details! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Back by popular demand, it's another Random Number Generator Car Reviews episode, where Jason and Derek pull reviews of cars from their extensive spreadsheet. This, after Jason succeeds in getting his van, Jynah, stuck in the snow. And succeeds, despite there being no snow. === This episode is sponsored by Vyper Industrial — America's #1 rated shop chair, tool carts, and creepers, proudly made here in the US. Visit vyperindustrial.com and use code CARMUDGEON for $50 off. === Jason takes the van to Tahoe to finally test the Vredestein Wintrac Pros in the snow. He experiences the joys of installing tire chains on the side of a cold, wet freeway while chain-control enforcers allow countless all-season- or even summer tire-equipped SUVs to pass by. The Carmudgeons discuss the importance of tires and the dramatic grip disparity between various tire types in the snow. Then they open up their driving history spreadsheets once again for more random number generator car reviews! Jason heads to Lake Tahoe just after a 4-foot snow storm that somehow never materialized. After trekking another 2,000+ feet up in elevation to Mt Rose, he found some, and a simultaneously serene and serendipitous photoshoot ensued. Caravaning up the mountain alongside the van were Jason's pals in a VinFast VF8 (which easily beats the van in a roll race) and a Range Rover. Someone has to call AAA – guess who! Jason is incensed by the farcical chain-control restrictions which forced him – driving the FWD van on brand new dedicated winter tires – to pull over and install chains on the slushy roadside, while countless boobs driving AWD SUVs wearing all-seasons or even summer tires were allowed to pass right through (one of which winds up totalled in a Jersey Barrier). The Carmudgeons can't stress enough the importance of tires. Especially in the wet and snow. We'll cover stopping distances of various tire types, and recommend excellent videos from both Engineering Explained and Tyre Reviews on YouTube – especially this one measuring stopping distances and acceleration times on snow using a variety of tire types and grip enhancement measures like chains, ladders, snow socks and more: https://youtu.be/W-k_1gz87vM?si=gR3iIm_77Go1vzmZ Following the tire discussion, we dive into yet another Random Number Generator Car Reviews session. The Carmudgeons will recount their drives in the following cars: Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG 4Matic Wagon W210 First-gen Porsche Panamera (alongside a 760Li and S63) B8 Audi S4 3.0 “Tupercharged” Acura TL SH-AWD 6-speed (and ZDX) 1957 Porsche Speedster with 4-cam Carrera engine 1958 Porsche 356 Speedster Intermeccanica 2006 Mk5 VW GTI 2.0T 1960 Alfa Giulietta Spider Veloce 2012 E90 BMW M3 Competition Package 2007 Chevy HHR Panel van 2006 Jaguar XJR 2023 Acura Integra Type-S 2009 Ford Escape 4-cyl 1949 Hudson Super 6 Convertible 2010 Jaguar XFR 5.0 Supercharged 1971 Mercedes 280 SE 3.5 Cabriolet 2019 Mazda3 AWD Sedan 2003 Aston Martin Vanquish 2019 Genesis G70 AWD 1974 Lancia Stratos HF 2008 Ford Expedition 2000 BMW Z3 2.3i 2015 Ford F-350 Super Duty Diesel 2008 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet Tiptronic Jason once got to play policeman while driving around a 2012 CLS63 AMG Fashion Force “police” car that Mercedes created for New York Fashion Week, where he tickets egregiously modified cars. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ENGINEERING EXPLAINED VS TESLA 0-60MPH CLAIMS"The popular YouTube channel Engineering Explained has a problem with Tesla's claim that the Model S Plaid and Plaid Plus can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under 2 seconds. The issue at the heart of the problem is the fact that Tesla uses "rollout" to achieve the claimed sub-2-second 0 to 60 times for the New Model S Plaid and Plaid+. In other words, it's not 0 to 60 mph, it's more like 6 to 60 mph since the Plaid and Plaid Plus will likely have accelerated to 6 mph by the time they have traveled the one-foot rollout and Tesla's stopwatch starts." says Tom Moloughney for InsideEVs: "The three arguments being: Most people don't even know what rollout is - and they shouldn't have to. He finds it deceiving that the information is hidden in the detail section, and not shown on the main Model S order page. Tesla doesn't use the same method of recording 0-60 times for the less expensive models." https://insideevs.com/news/505597/engineering-explained-model-s-acceleration-rollout/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7yigpPSu_o FOLLOW UP TO TEXAS EV BILL - ALSO, SASKATCHEWAN"On April 20, 2021, the Government of Saskatchewan introduced Bill 34 to create a new annual road use charge of $150 for passenger EVs registered in the province. In a recent press release, the provincial government announced that the increasing number of EVs contribute to the wear and tear on provincial roads, and the EV owners are currently not contributing to the maintenance of the roads through the provincial fuel tax because EVs do not consume conventional fossil fuels." At the moment will affect around 500 owners. https://www.jdsupra.com/legalnews/saskatchewan-to-introduce-a-road-use-6780646/ MERCEDES EQS SUV SPIED IN PARKING LOT WITH ITS INSIDES SHOWING"now that the sedan is unwrapped, we can easily see a very similar design for the grille and headlights on the SUV. Even with cladding under the wrap at the grille, there's no missing that big, grinning face and cab-forward design Mercedes made such a big deal about at the EQS debut" says Motor1.com: "Despite the sedan's recent debut, we aren't expecting to see the SUV break cover anytime soon. Mercedes is on track to have 10 electric vehicles in its stable by the end of 2022 and the EQS SUV will likely come towards the end of that run, possibly debuting late this year or the first half of next year as a 2023 model." Mercedes’s design chief, Gordon Wagener recently discussed the EQS and upcoming EQE SUV’s design brief with Auto Express, saying: “They will look different in a similar way as I describe the EQS. They will be more seamless, more integrated, more aerodynamic, more futuristic looking, so it will be a new type of SUV.” " according to Auto Express: "The EQS SUV should also adopt Mercedes’s Level 3 autonomous driving technology, which will allow the car to drive itself with limited driver supervision at speeds up to 37mph, when in slow-moving motorway traffic. The UK Government also recently legalised such systems for use on the road, meaning there’s no longer any road-blocks for British buyers." https://www.motor1.com/news/505591/mercedes-eqs-suv-interior-spy-photos/ https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/mercedes/354747/new-2022-mercedes-eqs-suv-spied-first-time FISKER EV DEAL WITH FOXCONN INCLUDES U.S. FACTORYFisker Inc.’s existing agreement to develop an electric vehicle with Foxconn Technology Group will now include a factory in the U.S. The joint project -- codenamed Project PEAR -- is targeting a start of production in the U.S. by the fourth quarter of 2023, the companies said in a statement Thursday.  Foxconn has an EV platform that will be used to launch two light vehicles in the fourth quarter of this year, Chairman Young Liu said in February. The company has also inked a manufacturing deal with Chinese startup Byton Ltd. and been among a coterie of suppliers and assemblers linked with a potential Apple Inc. car." says Bloomberg: "Fisker and Foxconn will jointly invest in Project PEAR -- short for Personal Electric Automotive Revolution -- with each company taking proceeds if the launch is successful. Spending on the partnership will be hefty. Liu told analysts on Friday that building 10,000 cars per month in the U.S. will require $1 billion of capital expenditure, though he declined to elaborate on how the two companies will split the costs. The companies said the jointly developed vehicle will be priced below $30,000." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-05-13/fisker-s-electric-car-deal-with-foxconn-to-include-u-s-factory BATTERY GIANT SONNEN LAUNCHES ELECTRIC VEHICLE SUBSCRIPTION SERVICE IN AUSTRALIA"Global battery giant Sonnen has jumped into Australia’s nascent – and important – electric vehicle subscription market, offering its home battery storage customers the choice of six different EVs, including the Tesla Model 3, for up to $447 a week.  it will offer a menu of five fully electric cars and one plug-in hybrid, all 2020 models. The list includes the MG ZS, the Nissan Leaf, the Hyundai IONIQ Elite – both the plug-in hybrid and battery electric versions, the Hyundai Kona, and the Model 3 from one of Sonnen’s key home battery storage rivals, Tesla." says TheDriven.io: "Sonnen’s pay-as-you-go subscription model offers flexibility – no lock-in contracts and members can stop or swap with two weeks notice – with the weekly subscription cost covering registration, insurance, maintenance, servicing and roadside assistance." https://thedriven.io/2021/05/10/battery-giant-sonnen-launches-electric-vehicle-subscription-service-in-australia/ https://sonnengroup.com/sonnenbatterie/ NEW YORK CITY EVSfrom Anne Barnard at NYT, a look at some of the EVs being used in the city: "The city already has one all-electric garbage truck and 27 hybrid sweepers. The new sweeper, which will travel 7,000 miles per year, will reduce planet-warming emissions by 89 metric tons in its lifetime, the amount 19 cars spew in a year, sanitation officials say." "The city’s first all-electric school bus started running a route in central Brooklyn last month, after Mayor Bill de Blasio announced plans to make all school buses electric within 14 years." "Another 600 off-road city vehicles, used mostly in parks, are either fully electric or solar." "There are 13 all-electric taxis out of 13,587 in the city. Out of more than 103,000 licensed ride-sharing vehicles, fewer than 300 were all-electric as of mid-2020." https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2021/05/13/nyregion/ny-electric-vehicles.html 5 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE FUTURE OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES 1. There were 11 million registered electric vehicles on the road at the end of last year 10 million of these were cars. 2. Electric car buying remained high in the face of the pandemic. Electric car registrations were up 41% in 2020, despite a 16% drop in overall car sales across the world.3. Consumer and government spending on electric cars rose in 2020. A rise in the number of different EV car models available in the market to 370 and the falling cost of batteries saw consumers spend 50% more on electric cars in 2020, to the tune of $120 billion4. Electric bus and truck registrations also increased within the world’s largest markets Across China, Europe and North America these rises were mainly due to municipal governments imposing greater emission reductions on commercial vehicles operating within their towns and cities.5. Widespread EV adoption could significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions The IEA says mass adoption has the potential to cut emissions by more than one-third by 2030 under the existing ‘stated’ green policies. https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2021/05/electric-vehicle-sales-sustainability-iea/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM A recent survey – which I highly questioned and disagreed with – claimed 1 in 5 EV owners went back to piston power.  I have never heard anything like a 20% rate of EV drivers being unhappy with electric. Would you ever go back? Yes, No and tell me why! Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com  It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.

I moved to Octopus recently and had been putting it off for ages,  but I kicked myself for not doing it sooner, as it’s literally a 5 minute job to give them your details.   Click here: https://share.octopus.energy/free-puma-452   On today’s podcast: Electric Hummer SUV Launch Edition is $110,000 BMW iX M60 Reportedly Packing 560 Electric Horses Watch the Nissan Ariya Do Last-Minute Winter Testing Swedish Structural Electric Car Battery Question Of The Week Answers     Show #1042   Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 4th April. ELECTRIC HUMMER SUV LAUNCH EDITION IS $110,000 "Hummer has unveiled the SUV version of its electric pickup truck, which comes with up to 300 miles of range and will sell for a suggested retail price of up to $110,595 for its first edition. Reservations for that model are already full, according to GM’s website." say The Verge: " GM, which is producing the electric Hummers under its GMC brand, said the SUV will go into production starting early 2023, with less pricey variants starting at $90,000 in the spring of 2023 and a low-end $80,000 variant with a 250-mile range in the spring of 2024. Previously, the company said that its electric pickup truck will start assembly at the end of 2021, starting with the most expensive trim level."   The fully enclosed Hummer EV measures 20 inches shorter than the pickup. Despite this, it can still comfortably sit five adults and you can fold down the rear seats to open up 82 cubic feet of cargo space, with additional room under the load floor." says RobbReport.com: "The massive cargo space is accessible via a power swing-out tailgate with a full-size, rear-mounted spare tire. The cabin also features the truck’s easy-to-remove Infinity Roof sky panels, which can be stored in the EV’s frunk when you feel like transforming the SUV into a convertible 4×4. News that the Hummer SUV is less powerful than the pickup will be disappointing to some, but there is a tradeoff. Because of the shorter wheelbase, the new model also has a shorter turn radius than the truck."     "GMC unveiled the SUV in a commercial Saturday during the NCAA Men's Final Four basketball tournament. The ad, narrated by NBA star LeBron James, highlights signature Hummer features, such as Extract Mode and CrabWalk, GMC said." according  to Automotive News: "GMC has not confirmed volume targets or where the Hummer SUV will be assembled but AFS says GM will build the SUV at Factory Zero in Detroit, alongside the pickup. GM plans to build 23,000 GMC Hummer SUVs per year once production is ramped up, AFS said. The Edition 1 model will start at $105,595, $7,000 less than Edition 1 of the Hummer pickup, including destination fees. Customers can add an off-road package, which comes standard on the Edition 1 of the Hummer pickup, for $5,000."   GM has yet to detail precise battery specifications but has confirmed that the SUV will store its power in a 20-cell, double-stacked battery pack capable of 800V charging at rates of up to 300kW and offering a range of more than 300 miles, depending on specification. Equipped with the optional Power Station function, the car can also be used to power external devices - and even other EVs - at up to 6kW.  GM estimates a maximum output of 819bhp, which is 167bhp less than the top-rung version of the pick-up but nonetheless enough to take the SUV from 0-60mph in 3.5sec. A claimed torque figure of 11,500lb ft is several times more than produced by even today's most powerful production cars, but the real-life figure is likely to be closer to 1000lb ft when factoring in the multiplying effect of the gear ratios." explains Autocar.   CNET explained it well last year: "GMC's massive number appears to correspond to wheel torque, which is traditional motor torque multiplied through the transmission's drive ratio. Jason Fenske from Engineering Explained has a great video that spells out the difference, a piece he published following Tesla's claim that the Roadster 2.0 will produce more than 7,000 lb-ft of torque. Fenske used a Dodge Challenger SRT Demon as an example. That model produces 972 Newton-meters of engine torque (770 lb-ft). However, multiplied through its gear ratios, you get 14,000 Nm of wheel torque (10,325 lb-ft) in first gear. Most EVs have a final drive reduction ratio of about 8:1"   https://www.theverge.com/2021/4/3/22362072/hummer-suv-electric-price-specs-release-date   https://www.autonews.com/cars-concepts/gmc-launch-electric-hummer-suv-2023   https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2023-hummer-ev-819bhp-4x4-maximum-road-ability   https://www.cnet.com/roadshow/news/gmc-hummer-ev-torque-rating-misleading/   https://robbreport.com/motors/cars/gmc-hummer-ev-suv-edition-1-2023-1234605409/   BMW IX M60 REPORTEDLY PACKING 560 ELECTRIC HORSES "The BMW iX electric crossover will reportedly get an M variant in late 2022 or 2023. It'll reportedly pack 560 horsepower (418 kilowatts), according to a new rumor from BMW Blog. The performance EV will allegedly go by the name iX M60. In addition to the extra horsepower, it will have upgrades like suspension tweaks. The styling will also be more aggressive to accentuate the extra performance visually." according to Motor1.com: "BMW will start taking orders for the iX xDrive50 in the US in June and deliveries will start in early 2022. Prices will start around $85,000. The electric crossover will have two electric motors producing a total of over 500 hp (375 kW). This will be enough for the model to reach 62 miles per hour (100 kilometers per hour) in under 5.0 seconds. The 100-kilowatt-hour battery will allow for an estimated range over 300 miles (483 kilometers) in the EPA test."   https://www.motor1.com/news/498501/bmw-ix-m60-power-rumor/   WATCH THE NISSAN ARIYA DO LAST-MINUTE WINTER TESTING "Development of the 2022 Nissan Ariya is wrapping up, with the automaker subjecting the electric crossover to some final cold weather testing in Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost main island, while the wintery weather lasts. The Ariya is production-ready at the moment, so Nissan isn't really changing anything substantial at this point as it readies the model to take on competitors like the Volkswagen ID.4 and the Tesla Model Y, as well as the recently revealed Kia EV6." says Autoweeks.com: "The Ariya will go on sale in the second half of 2021 with a choice of two battery sizes—63 kWh and 87 kWh—and a price around $40,000, according to Nissan, prior to any incentives. The larger battery should give it a range of around 300 miles,"   https://www.autoweek.com/news/green-cars/a36014367/watch-nissan-ariya-winter-testing/   SWEDISH STRUCTURAL ELECTRIC CAR BATTERY "Efforts to reduce battery weight by building batteries that are also part of the car’s structure are a promising concept, and a team of Swedish researchers seem to have made a big advance here, developing a structural battery system that uses a carbon-fiber anode." reports Jalopnik: "Tesla has been developing structural battery packs as well, but the method they’re using still requires individual, cylindrical battery cells, held in place by a matrix that’s also providing structural support as part of the car’s frame. Essentially, Tesla’s method is just embedding cylindrical battery cells in housings that are also part of the car’s frame. This is a good approach, but the Swedish team from Chalmers University of Technology  led by professor Leif Asptakes this concept a step further, making every component of the battery itself out of structural materials. Pretty much every part of this battery is capable of supporting structural loads, and not some lazy, freeloading cylindrical cell just snoozing away in some structural matrix that’s doing all the work."   https://jalopnik.com/swedish-researchers-have-developed-a-new-kind-of-struct-1846608660   "It contains carbon fiber that serves simultaneously as an electrode, conductor, and load-bearing material. Their latest research breakthrough paves the way for essentially ’massless’ energy storage in vehicles and other technology." says SciTechDaily.com: "This is termed ‘massless’ energy storage, because in essence the battery’s weight vanishes when it becomes part of the load-bearing structure. Calculations show that this type of multifunctional battery could greatly reduce the weight of an electric vehicle."   https://scitechdaily.com/big-breakthrough-for-massless-energy-storage-structural-battery-that-performs-10x-better-than-all-previous-versions/     QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS   RAJEEV NARAYAN I agree with you that a subsidy off the price of an EV may not be the best incentive. Often the manufacturer increases the price to take some of the incentive. My Chevy Bolt now is now suddenly much cheaper now that it is no longer eligible for the tax credit. Post purchase incentives may be better, such as perhaps a certain amount of free charging or free access to charging infrastructure, or even discounted or no yearly registration fees.   James Redman I think people need some persuasion to try an EV so I would incentivise free EV loaners for 24-72 hours, insurance covered etc, and let people try any EV for free.   Marina In New York Company vehicles cover far more miles than a personal vehicle so I think fleets and working vans should get more incentives. It might not be popular with private buyers but it will get more miles driven electrically than anything else.   Tony In His BoltEV It's no so mich an incentive FOR EVs, but more countries should do like Norway and add a surcharge or taxes to the cost of petrol and diesel vehicles to make them more expensive. This doesn't stop anyone buying a petrol car if they really want to, but it does let people choose an EV to save money.   Silvia Hodgson The best kind of EV incentive is one which constantly reminds you of the benefits rather than a single incentive at purchase. So ongoing things like tax breaks, lower fueling costs, lower rates of company car tax are all good reminders about the choice you made to buy an EV.   Veronica In London Why don't more countries lift the Value Added Tax, or VAT, on EVs? We have seen this in the UK following Covid where the hospitality sector had the VAT rate reduced to 5% from 20% in order to stimulate the sector. After all, VAT is an optional tax applied to most things or services we buy. It's the third biggest revenue generator for the government after taxes on wages earned, and the National Insurance we pay on our wages.   Joey Bono, Ωhm EV Solutions Point of Sale rebate, in US $7500 off the MSRP 'sticker price' at time of purchase or finance. Recommended vidoes to watch - my buddy Kyle Conner has taken a 20 minute tour of the Nissan ARIYA. A potentially important car if they price it correctly and promote it to their customers. It's not the 'new LEAF' its a ground-up rethink of an EV. They seem to have parked inside a painfully trendy loft apartment with stripped back brick walls, and it's in the launch colour which I'll generously call copper.  It's on the InsideEVs channel.   And secondly it's rare that two people send me a video recommendation within a few minutes of each other, but the brilliant Jason at Engineering Explained channel asks: "Why do bigger wheels mean worse efficiency, when the overall tire diameter remains the same? This comes down to aerodynamics. A 20" wheel will cause more of a disruption in airflow than an 18" wheel. That's why Tesla (and others) uses aero covers on their wheels (Car & Driver testing showed it gives about a 3% efficiency bonus at speed). The smaller the wheel, the more of the side profile of the wheel & tire is perfectly flat (the tire is flat, the wheel is open: more tire = more flat area, less open area). Ideally, you'd have just a plain, solid sheet for the wheel, but obviously that's not idea for brake cooling. Wheel covers are today's common compromise as they have some airflow, but minimal.  Let's bring back big sidewalls! Watch till the end to learn how fat sidewalls will save the planet."   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYvKxsYFqO8&feature=emb_title&ab_channel=EngineeringExplained   FORD E-TRANSIT UNVEILED "Ford debuted its all-electric E-Transit van this morning, and I have to say, of all the electric car debuts we’ve seen in recent years — the Volkswagen ID.4, the Mustang Mach-E, the Hummer EV, the Cadillac Lyriq, yes, even the Polestar 2 and Honda E — the E-Transit is more exciting than them all." says Erik at Jalopnik: "This is because the E-Transit has practical applications that other EV cars simply don’t offer. Vans tend to be used for short trips and are also used widely for the so-called “last mile” of deliveries. An electric van completing those trips should have meaningful effects on emissions since commercial vehicles contribute a fair amount of pollution to the environment."   With a usable battery capacity of 67kWh, E-Transit offers an estimated driving range of up to 217 miles on the combined WLTP cycle,  providing enough range to meet daily requirements, but with sufficient additional capacity to account for variations in vehicle load and weather conditions.   This makes E-Transit ideal for urban environments, fixed drive routes and deliveries within geofenced zero-emission driving zones, without requiring fleet owners to pay for excess battery capacity they don’t need. The vehicle also supports Scheduled Pre-Conditioning, enabling the climate control system to be programmed to adjust the cabin to the preferred temperature while the vehicle is still on charge, ensuring that the maximum driving range is available.   E-Transit can reduce service cost of ownership by approximately 40 per cent compared with internal combustion engine-equipped models, as a result of lower maintenance expenses. The vehicle’s 11.3kW on-board charger is capable of delivering a 100 per cent charge in up to 8.2 hours. Charging with up to 115kW using a high-power DC fast-charger, E-Transit can top-up the battery from 15 per cent to 80 per cent in around 34 minutes.   E-Transit features optional Pro Power Onboard, which enables customers to transform the vehicle into a mobile power source, providing up to 2.3kW for powering tools and equipment on the jobsite and on the go. This is an industry first for light commercial vehicles in Europe.   Designed with uncompromised cargo volume capacity, E-Transit’s battery is located underneath the body, providing up to 15.1 cubic meters of cargo space, the same as a rear-wheel drive diesel Transit.   Ford engineers redesigned E-Transit’s driveline and rear suspension system to optimise cargo space, creating a heavy-duty semi-trailing arm suspension system that enables better steering precision and more confident handling, plus better traction in both laden and unladen conditions.   In Europe, Ford will offer a generous choice of 25 E-Transit configurations, with van, double-cab-in-van and chassis cab body styles, multiple length and roof-height options, and a range of gross vehicle mass options up to 4.25 tonnes, to support a wide variety of customer needs   $45,000 is 4k above combustion version.   RIVIAN R1T AND R1S PRICING OFFICIALLY ANNOUNCED "According to information posted to the automaker’s website, the R1T will come in three different variants. Needless to say, workers’ union IG Metall was not happy about the executive’s alleged “betrayal.”" reports Teslarati: "While neither Reif nor Tesla has confirmed the news, IG Metall took the unusual step of announcing the executive’s departure from Mercedes-Benz’s engine factory at Berlin. As noted in a report from Deutsche Welle, the union announced the “defection” in a press release calling for protests at the engine factory on Thursday, November 12. Jan Otto, head of IG Metall Berlin, shared the union’s sentiments about Reif’s departure."   https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-diamler-exec-enrages-german-union-over-treason/   POWERCELL GETS MORE ORDERS FOR FC STACKS FROM BOSCH "PowerCell Sweden has been given a further order from Bosch worth the equivalent of around 900,000 euros to supply FC stacks of the PowerCell S3 type next year. The deal is part of a joint development and license agreement signed in 2019." reports electrive: "Since April 2019, Bosch and PowerCell Sweden have been working together on the development, production and marketing of a stack for the automotive sector based on the polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEM) called PowerCell S3. PowerCell sells its fuel cell for other segments. For example, according to an earlier announcement, the company has signed a contract with an unnamed “leading European shipyard” for the development and supply of a marine fuel cell system with a total output of approximately 3 megawatts. The system is to be developed and delivered within three years. Bosch sees long-term potential in the mobile fuel cell technology business in the billions. Bosch has already made clear some time ago that starting with commercial vehicles, Bosch fuel cell drives would then be increasingly used in passenger cars in the future."   https://www.electrive.com/2020/11/11/powercell-gets-more-orders-for-fc-stacks-from-bosch/   You can listen to all 928 previous episodes of this this for free, where you get your podcasts from, plus the blog https://www.evnewsdaily.com/ – remember to subscribe, which means you don’t have to think about downloading the show each day, plus you get it first and free and automatically.   It would mean a lot if you could take 2mins to leave a quick review on whichever platform you download the podcast.   And  if you have an Amazon Echo, download our Alexa Skill, search for EV News Daily and add it as a flash briefing.   Come and say hi on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter just search EV News Daily, have a wonderful day, I’ll catch you tomorrow and remember…there’s no such thing as a self-charging hybrid.     PHIL ROBERTS / ELECTRIC FUTURE (PREMIUM PARTNER) BRAD CROSBY (PREMIUM PARTNER) AVID TECHNOLOGY (PREMIUM PARTNER) PORSCHE OF THE VILLAGE CINCINNATI (PREMIUM PARTNER) AUDI CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) VOLVO CARS CINCINNATI EAST (PREMIUM PARTNER) NATIONALCARCHARGING.COM and ALOHACHARGE.COM  (PREMIUM PARTNER) DEREK REILLY FROM THE EV REVIEW IRELAND YOUTUBE CHANNEL (PREMIUM PARTNER) RICHARD AT RSYMONS.CO.UK – THE ELECTRIC VEHICLE SPECIALIST (PREMIUM PARTNER)   DAVID AND LISA ALLEN (PARTNER) OEM AUDIO OF NEW ZEALAND AND EVPOWER.CO.NZ (PARTNER) GARETH HAMER eMOBILITY NORWAY HTTPS://WWW.EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM/  (PARTNER) BOB BOOTHBY – MILLBROOK COTTAGES AND ELOPEMENT WEDDING VENUE (PARTNER) DARIN MCLESKEY FROM DENOVO REAL ESTATE (PARTNER) JUKKA KUKONEN FROM WWW.SHIFT2ELECTRIC.COM RAJEEV NARAYAN (PARTNER)   ALAN ROBSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALAN SHEDD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEX BANAHENE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ALEXANDER FRANK @ https://www.youtube.com/c/alexsuniverse42 ANDERS HOVE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREA JEFFERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ANDREW GREEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASEER KHALID (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ASHLEY HILL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BÅRD FJUKSTAD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRIAN THOMPSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) BRUCE BOHANNAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHARLES HALL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRIS HOPKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CHRISTOPHER BARTH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) COLIN HENNESSY AND CAMBSEV (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG COLES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) CRAIG ROGERS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAMIEN DAVIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVE DEWSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID FINCH (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID MOORE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PARTINGTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DAVID PRESCOTT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) DON MCALLISTER / SCREENCASTSONLINE.COM (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ERU KYEYUNE-NYOMBI (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) FREDRIK ROVIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GENE RUBIN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GILBERTO ROSADO (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) GEOFF LOWE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) HEDLEY WRIGHT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN GRIFFITHS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN SEAR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) IAN (WATTIE) WATKINS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JACK OAKLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JAMES STORR (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JIM MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODICERS) JON AKA BEARDY MCBEARDFACE FROM KENT EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JON MANCHAK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) JUAN GONZALEZ (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEN MORRIS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KEVIN MEYERSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) KYLE MAHAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LARS DAHLAGER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LAURENCE D ALLEN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LEE BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) LUKE CULLEY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARCEL WARD (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARK BOSSERT (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MARTY YOUNG  (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MATT PISCIONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIA OPPELSTRUP (PARTNER) MICHAEL PASTRONE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) MIKE WINTER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NATHAN GORE-BROWN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NEIL E ROBERTS FROM SUSSEX EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NICHOLAS MILLER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) NIGEL MILES (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) OHAD ASTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL RIDINGS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PAUL STEPHENSON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GLASS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETE GORTON (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PETER & DEE ROBERTS FROM OXON EVS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHIL MOUCHET (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) PHILIP TRAUTMAN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RAJ BADWAL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENE KEEMIK (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RENÉ SCHNEIDER (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RICHARD LUPINSKY (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB HERMANS (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) ROB FROM THE RSTHINKS EV CHANNEL ON YOUTUBE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) RUPERT MITCHELL (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) SEIKI PAYNE (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEPHEN PENN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) STEVE JOHN (EXECUTIVE PRODUCER) THOMAS J. What are some of the early childhood signs that might make for a good engineer? In this themed episode Juan and Kyrin discuss the topic of 'Engineering'. Both Mere Mortals initially went to university for engineering (graduating in Civil and Mining) and subsequently worked as engineers for the early part of their careers. This episode covered their experiences at university, in the workplace and what it is like to be an engineer. The discussion starts off with indications in high school that suggested an aptitude for this profession: naturally good at maths, interest in mega-structures and buildings, enjoying problem solving and a desire to see things 'add up' nicely. For their first years in uni, both studied hard and tell of their moments of joy, frustration and learning. The most important learning coming from university was the value of fundamental engineering concepts and discarding the information that was not useful in the actual workplace. The second half of the conversation centres around some of their experiences in the workplace and why they transitioned into different career paths. These include some of their worst moments as well as the funny stories that can occur on a mine site. The episode ends with a quick look at the 6 classic simple machines and a delve into the etymology of 'engineering'. JAGUAR I-PACE CAN CHARGE AT 100 KW AFTER UPDATE @FastNed: The Jaguar I-PACE will soon be able to take ~100 kW at our stations which have 175 kW fast chargers. The required software update should be available soon at Jaguar dealers. Good job @Jaguar! 100kW can be used up to 40%.   SHELL SAYS IT CAN BE WORLD'S TOP POWER PRODUCER AND PROFIT "Royal Dutch Shell Plc plans to become the world’s biggest power company within 15 years, a move that suggests it sees climate change as a bigger threat to its business than electricity’s historically weak returns." Reports Bloomberg today: "The world’s No. 2 oil explorer by market value is spending as much as $2 billion a year on its new-energies division, mainly to grow in a power sector it sees delivering 8 to 12 percent annual returns, according to Maarten Wetselaar, director of Shell’s integrated gas and new-energies unit. Shell’s acquisitions in power so far include U.K. electricity provider First Utility, car-charging operator NewMotion and a stake in U.S. solar company Silicon Ranch Corp. It has also announced it’s bidding for Dutch utility Eneco, which provides low-carbon power to industrial users and offers apps and other technology to manage electricity consumption."   https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-03-11/shell-says-it-can-be-world-s-top-power-producer-and-make-money   BILL FORD SAYS AUTOMAKER PAIRS WELL WITH VW: SHARED ELECTRIC CARS LIKELY “Bill Ford — chairman of Ford Motor Company and great-grandson of Henry Ford — has spoken out about the potential for a partnership with Volkswagen. He believes that the two companies are set up to succeed if a joint effort comes to be." Writes Steven Loveday for an InsideEVs.com article today: "Ford says that both automakers have full realization of the difficulties involved in moving to EVs and self-driving cars."   Bill Ford told Bloomberg: "We fit together geographically really well, product line-wise, we fit together well. We both came to the same realization that as big as our balance sheets are, no company can do this alone. I’d like Ford to be around another 100 years, and if that’s going to happen, it’s clear that we really have to branch off into new directions to try to solve some of these problems. It’s hard because our current business model is providing all the earnings and cash flow that fund a lot of this change. So we have to do both really well. If we don’t make great cars and trucks today that people want, guess what? There is no tomorrow."   https://insideevs.com/bill-ford-says-vw-shared-electric-cars-likely/   JAMES BOND TO DRIVE ELECTRIC ASTON MARTIN IN NEW MOVIE "next year’s 25th Bond film looks set to have Ian Fleming’s hero make his first concession to climate change, by driving an electric Aston Martin – albeit one which retails at £250,000." Reports the UK Guardian today: "the film – whose working title of Shatterhand was recently debunked – will see Daniel Craig’s 007 behind the wheel of an Aston Martin Rapide E, one of only 155 electric cars being built by the British manufacturer. Aston Martin’s relationship with the spy franchise began in 1964, when Sean Connery drove a DB5 sports car in Goldfinger."   https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/mar/13/james-bond-to-drive-electric-aston-martin-in-new-movie   ELON RETWEETS: "HOW DOES A TESLA MODEL 3 IMPACT YOUR ELECTRIC BILL?" "Who better than Engineering Explained to break down electricity costs for owning and EV like the Tesla Model 3? We’ve learned that one of the most common questions from potential EVs owners is: How much will my home electric bill go up from charging my EV?" Says Steven Loveday at InsideEVs.com: "In the end, when looking at more realistic gas prices, an EV like the Tesla Model 3 will save you a ton of money. The best part is, Engineering Explained provides a nice, easy equation so that you can run the comparisons yourself before you move forward."   https://insideevs.com/tesla-model-3-analysis-ev-cheap-drive/   NEWMOTION REACHES NETWORK OF MORE THAN 100,000 CHARGE POINTS NewMotion is the first in the industry to have reached more than 100,000 charge points in its roaming charging network in Europe. The company works together with over 200 roaming partners to build this extensive network of public charge points, allowing EV drivers to roam seamlessly across 28 countries in Europe. More than 170,000 registered NewMotion charge card holders are already enjoying the benefits of Europe’s largest roaming charging network. Writes James Fossdyke for InsideEVs.com today: "Highways England, the government-run company in charge of England’s strategic road network, awarded the contract jointly to BP Chargemaster and Swarco UK as part of its drive to promote the uptake of electric cars. The organisation wants to ensure that 95 percent of its network is within 20 miles of a charging point, in the hope that this will encourage more motorists to switch to electric power."   https://insideevs.com/uk-motorways-50-new-ev-fast-chargers/   2019 WORLD CAR OF THE YEAR FINALISTS ANNOUNCED IN GENEVA The top 4 finalists for the 2019 World Car of the Year award have been announced at the Geneva Motor Show, where the Jaguar I-Pace grabbed the European Car Of The Year Award. The facility will get a new body shop with a total area of 75,500 square meters for the next-generation Macan, which will be manufactured from the beginning of the next decade."   Porsche says: "“The expansion project gives Porsche the option to produce fully electric vehicles on the existing production line in addition to petrol and hybrid models in the future. The first car to benefit from extended factory premises will be the next generation of the Macan: As a purely electrically powered vehicle based on the “Premium Platform Electric” (PPE) architecture, the new Macan will roll off the assembly line in Leipzig at the beginning of the next decade.”   https://insideevs.com/porsche-invest-to-produce-electric-macan/   TOYOTA IS LOSING THE ELECTRIC CAR RACE, SO IT PRETENDS HYBRIDS ARE BETTER "There are at least 12 car companies currently selling an all-electric vehicle in the United States, and Toyota isn’t one of them. Despite admitting recently that the Tesla Model 3 alone is responsible for half of Toyota’s customer defections in North America — as Prius drivers transition to all-electric — the company has been an outspoken laggard in the race to electrification." According to the deSmog website: "Last week, at the Geneva Auto Show, a Toyota executive provided a curious explanation for the company’s refusal to launch a single battery electric vehicle. As Car and Driver reported, Toyota claims that it is limited by battery production capacity and that “Toyota is able to produce enough batteries for 28,000 electric vehicles each year — or for 1.5 million hybrid cars.” In other words, because Toyota has neglected to invest in battery production, it can only produce enough batteries for a trivial number of all-electric vehicles."   https://www.desmogblog.com/2019/03/12/toyota-losing-electric-car-race-pretends-hybrids-better   COMMUNITY And thanks to MYEV.com they’ve set us another Question Of The Week. The ISDA Secure Transportation and Executive Protection News Podcast for Monday, November 19, 2018 ====================== In Driving News From Axios Regulating the humans behind the wheel of autonomous vehicles The job of autonomous vehicle safety driver seems pretty easy: Get paid for sitting there while the car does all the work. But it's a challenging assignment and self-regulated by the companies testing AVs, so the rules are only beginning to emerge. Safety drivers are researchers' eyes and ears, chronicling every roadway encounter to make the technology better. But requiring drivers ‚Äî even specially trained ones ‚Äî to pay attention without actually driving is difficult, which is why many companies argue that full autonomy is the safest way to go. Last March, a pedestrian was struck and killed by an Uber-operated self-driving car in Tempe, Arizona. The human monitoring the vehicle was believed to be watching a television show on her phone. The accident prompted a review of procedures and expectations for human safety drivers. Without federal regulations for AVs — just general guidance — the U.S. Department of Transportation suggests states should be the ones to regulate safety drivers. For now, best practices are emerging from a handful of voluntary safety self-assessments submitted by companies to the DOT. Safety drivers typically work in pairs, one in the driver's seat monitoring the environment and the other riding shotgun with a laptop, monitoring the car's computing system and annotating the drive.   https://www.axios.com/autonomous-vehicles-safety-drivers-training-b1c8b0ed-a32f-4bfe-884d-81cc0d44c38a.html ========================= And from International Security Driver Association Facebook Page Recommendation As a Security Driver people expect you to know about cars.
