No doubt at some point in your life you've skipped a meal, whether it was to save money, lose weight or just because you were too damn busy with work. Maybe you even do it on a regular basis, without really knowing whether it's good or bad for you. Skipping meals makes us more likely to snack afterwards, eating food items which are often high in fat and sugar. Another risk is that you compensate by overeating at your next mealtime. By taking on more calories than you need, you'll accentuate feelings of hunger.  Can I at least skip breakfast? What about when I'm not feeling hungry at all? Today, “left” and “right” are the main labels we use to categorise political views, but their origins go back over two centuries. To understand, we have to go back to the French Revolution in 1789. That spring, France's King Louis XVI convened a meeting known as the Estates General, bringing together representatives from three groups, or “Estates”: the clergy, the nobility, and the Third Estate, which represented the common people. A few months later, in July, this assembly became the Constituent Assembly. Where did it all begin? Are there other kinds of political oppositions besides left and right? “The rich get richer and the poor get poorer”, the saying goes. And there's actually a name for that phenomenon: the Matthew Effect. The term was first coined by sociologists Robert K. Merton and Harriet Zuckerman in 1968, in relation to how “already eminent scientists were given disproportionate credit in cases of collaboration or of independent multiple discoveries.” In other words, if a group of scientists made a discovery together, with equal input, the most famous one would tend to get the most credit. Unfair, right? But sadly true! The Matthew Effect was not limited to scientific citations. Other researchers found that it also applied to wealth and status in society. The European Political Community was launched in 2022 to discuss the future of Europe, mainly in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron first suggested the EPC's creation in a speech to the European Parliament back in early May. Less than six months later, the first summit was held in Prague. Despite initially opposed to the creation of the EPC back in June as Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss was in attendance in Prague. It's thought she still remains somewhat skeptical, she made it clear she doesn't want the new organisation to “cut across” NATO and the G7. Regardless, the UK will host the fourth EPC meeting in early 2024, after Moldova and Spain take their turn. Why was the European Political Community created? What future for Ukraine in Europe? Ahead of the EU-Ukraine summit following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, I spoke with Atlantic Council Europe Center Distinguished Fellow Gérard Araud on the relationship between the EU and Ukraine for a special Debrief. What role will there be for the European Political Community in Ukraine's plan to join the European Union? How would existing EU policies, particularly those in agriculture, be impacted by Ukraine's accession? Can we expect Ukraine's accession to the EU anytime soon? Who is opposed to Ukraine's accession?

Throughout history people have been keen to find the answer to immortality. It's now commonly accepted that eternal life is not possible. Yet, somewhere deep in the ocean, a tiny fingernail-sized creature nicknamed the “immortal jellyfish” might be able to cast new light on the human aging process. A new study published in August 2022 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows the results from a team of researchers who have mapped the jellyfish's genetic code to find the secret to its immortality. They found that the immortal jellyfish has twice more copies of genes associated with DNA repair and protection than a regular jellyfish. They can produce greater amounts of protective and restorative proteins. Why is the "immortal jellyfish" immortal? Will humans be able to regenerate like jellyfish? How come the UK got invited to an EU forum? What happened in the first EPC meeting? In under 3 minutes, we answer your questions! To listen to the latest episodes, click here: What is Fintech? Back in May, French President Emmanuel Macron said he envisioned a larger group beyond the European Union. And that idea became a reality with the European Political Community, which held its first summit in the Czech capital Prague. Everything facing Europe was on the table, from Russia's attack on Ukraine, to the global energy crisis and tensions in the South Caucasus. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attended the summit, where he met with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian. President Erdogan said full the normalization of relations can be achieved, and that he expects long time rivals Armenia and Azerbaijan to reach a peace agreement. Türkiye and Armenia have not had formal diplomatic ties since the 1990s, over Armenia's illegal occupation of the Karabakh region. During the summit, Erdogan also said he expects the EU to call on Greece for dialogue. Ankara and Athens have seen tensions rise dramatically this year over maritime disputes, and Greece's militarisation of islands close to Türkiye's coast. So will the European Political Community become a new platform or will it lack the authority of much older groupings like the EU and NATO? He talked about the creation of a new "European Political Community" that would include both EU members and non-member states. At the beginning of his speech, Macron recalled Robert Schuman's remarks on May 9, 1950, regarding the contribution Europe can bring to the civilization: “World peace cannot be safeguarded without the making of creative efforts proportionate to the dangers which threaten it.” Macron later stated that these remarks are even more necessary today than in the past and drew attention to the fact that the situation in Ukraine brought the war back to the European continent. ... This week, our Beyond the Byline podcast focuses on why the Eurovision Song Contest has become so politicised and whether this year's event is a good reflection of current European affairs.Who are the traditional allies that we will see supporting each other during the big final, which countries are not participating, and what political messages are conveyed with the songs? To break down the politics of Eurovision, I'm joined by two special guests from EURACTIV's editorial team- Gerardo Fortuna, who is in Turin for the big final and Vlad Maksimov, who has a good understanding of the European song contest and the politics behind it.We are also talking about the vision of French President Emmanuel Macron, for a “European Political Community”. Is this new community a shortcut on the road to full EU membership or maybe just a waiting room? What can we expect from it, and why is it important for the EU? To hear more on this, I spoke with Senior Editor Oliver Noyan.
