On this episode I sit down with Dr. Paul Laursen to talk about the science and application of high-intensity interval training (HIIT). An Ironman Triathlon competitor himself, Dr. Laursen currently serves as an elite endurance coach for professional Ironman athletes. Additionally, he is the co-founder of HIIT Science, has published over 135 refereed manuscripts in moderate-to-high impact exercise and sports science journals, serves as a low-carb researcher for UCAN, is an adjunct professor of Exercise Physiology at Auckland University of Technology, and is the co-inventor of the Floe Bottle. Dr. Laursen was able to provide detailed insight on the physiologic mechanisms that take place both during and after HIIT training bouts, the physiologic targets of HIIT training, how to manipulate training variables to target a specific physiologic response, active vs. passive recovery, nutritional considerations, and how to efficiently implement HIIT training into a strength and conditioning program. On this episode I sit down with Dr. Nicole Surdyka to talk about all things ACL injury, risk factors, and risk reduction as they pertain to the soccer athlete. Nicole is a Physical Therapist, Performance Coach, former Division I soccer athlete, and current private clinic owner based out of Los Angeles, CA where she works primarily with athletes. She shares the same mission in bridging the gap between rehabilitation and sorts performance and was able to support her stance on ACL injury prevalence, risk factors, and re-injury rates with current literature. Additionally, she touches on some of the fundamental flaws that lie within return to sport (RTS) criteria and provided literature to support more efficient alternatives in regard to RTS testing batteries. Furthermore, she provides valuable information on inter-limb vs. intra-limb compensations and the injury-risk(s) they impose, open kinetic chain (OKC) exercise post-status ACLR, graft types and the role they play in exercise selection, programming and manipulating movement variables to cater sports performance, markers for progression or regression within each phase of rehab, and the psychological impact of ACL injuries. On this episode of the PRST podcast I sit down with Washington Nationals Head Physical Therapist, Washington Spirit Head Physical Therapist, and Senior Director for INOVA Physical Therapy Centers Dr. Seth Blee (@sethblee) to talk shop about Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) and Blood Flow Restriction Training (BFR). Seth dives into the underlying principles of PNF and how he relies on our developmental movement sequence to facilitate and restore optimal movement. Additionally, he touches on PNF's utility when performing functional mobilization techniques on his athletes. In regard to BFR, Seth outlines the physiologic mechanisms that take place to allow for muscle growth without excessive muscle breakdown. Furthermore, he explains the programming model behind BFR and how it also serves as a recovery modality. Lastly, Seth touches on his experience working with Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith after his life-threatening leg injury in November of 2018.
