In the latest episode, I chat with natural hair pioneer Taliah Waajid, who talks about her career journey in the world of textured tresses that inspired her to create the World Natural Hair Show in the late 1990s. Taliah shares how her first braiding in a salon taught her that the customer's hair health has to be the priority, even if it means turning down a style request. When she first moved there, the perception of natural hair differed between New York City and Atlanta. She shares how "Poetic Justice" helped turn the tide. And how working at a big salon in Atlanta drove home the importance of retailing products as a revenue stream and why she created her first three products. Her lines include Uncle Jimmy's (her men's line), her children's line, Black Earth (her original collection), Curls, Waves, Naturals, Protective Styles, Green Apple, and Aloe. (While she also has a scalp care collection in the works.)Taliah explains the steps she took to get her products in local beauty supply stores, find distributors and eventually land her products in big box stores like Walmart and Target. She shares why running a salon and a brand didn't work for her. But what you will want to hear is why and how she came to start The World Natural Hair Show, now in its 22nd year. After not mounting the show for two years, she is excited to return. Hear how she built the show from its humble beginnings to the point where there were 30,000 attendees over the two-day event with more than 300 vendors. And why it was vital for her to include competitors in the mix. (Correction: The Show is on 4/23 and 4/24!!) Money circulates nearly an unlimited number of times in white neighborhoods, but only once in African-American communities, according to the Selig Center for Economic Growth. On this episode, we ask: how can we keep the Black dollar circulating in Black communities for longer? First, we hear from Bernard Bronner, President and CEO of Bronner Bros., the Black, family-owned beauty company behind the annual Bronner Bros. Hair Show. After losing their best-selling hair care product because they didn't manufacture it themselves, the Bronners recognized the importance of ownership for sustaining not only the company, but the broader Black community. Then, host Carla Harris sits down with author and activist Maggie Anderson, who embarked on a year-long journey to only buy Black. Through her lived experience and supporting data, Maggie unpacks the historical and ongoing factors that prevent Black dollars from circulating through the Black community. And she highlights opportunities that exist for Black entrepreneurs and consumers to reclaim the power of their dollar. https://www.morganstanley.com/what-we-do/inclusive-innovation-and-opportunity Disclaimer textThe guest speakers are neither employees nor affiliated with Morgan Stanley & Co. There once was a talented Melodic Thrash and Power Metal band from Southern Oregon that was cutting their own path to success. Unfortunately, they stepped off the path, and they've been lost in the woods for 25 years. This year, they found their way back to the trail, and now they're poised to pick up where they left off. Taking a quarter-century-old demo tape of songs so good it became a fascination for collectors as far away from Oregon as Germany, and applying modern musicianship and mastering techniques, the cult favorite band Emissary has reunited for success. And they've asked me and The Hard, Heavy & Hair Show to host the exclusive, worldwide premiere of their next song, a track that won't be available until they drop their first official album in 25 years, just before 2022. I spoke with the driving force members of Emissary--then and now--about the song, the new album, and just what the hell happened to get them so off track for so long. Australia's lady of Rock, Lisa Perry, the Hellz in the band Hellz Abyss, spoke from her Sydney, Australia home with Hard, Heavy & Hair Show host Pariah Burke on the day of her debut album release. Links and music - http://rockn.me/hhh295 We talked about the strong 90s Industrial Metal influence on the Hellz Abyss debut album N1FG, the genesis of many of the tracks--including a BDSM track that any Lords of Acid fan would love to be tied up in--about the heady company she'll be in on her upcoming International Women of Rock tour, her heartbreaking work with Megadeth's Jeff Young, her endorsement for RØDE Microphones, her desire to sing lead for Motley Crue and AC/DC, and the next Hellz Abyss album, already in the works, with even more city-flattening drums and bass heft, banshee scream Metal rippers, and nitro-fueled guitar assaults that couldn't fit on N1FG. Mike Langford, record producer, artist consultant, and drummer for both Tense Machine and Deadset Society talks with Pariah Burke on the Hard, Heavy & Hair Show before the exclusive world-wide premiere of new Tense Machine single "Pieces" on Hard, Heavy & Hair. Recently host Pariah Burke was talking with Mike Langford on Facebook about how Spotify is actually good for musicians. They decided to take the conversation to Zoom where Pariah asked Mike about that; strategies for success in the music business in today's digital-first, streaming world; and whatever happened to Deadset Society. The 37-year-old music producer and veteran musician was incredibly candid, not only about his business advice to bands, but also about deeply personal issues like his Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis. It's Black History Month!!! The theme for 2021 is The Black Family: Representation, Identity, and Diversity. As the mother of beautiful mocha babies, Black History is celebrated 365 days a year! Over the next couple of episodes, we are going to talk about identity and diversity. Don't forget to check out our episode on Black Representation in Media. Leah and I have very detailed conversations about image, specifically our hair. Leah shared a poem with me a couple of weeks ago and I want her to share it here. I hate my hair. I wish I had honey-colored coils that shake and bounce. Instead, I have thick, dark, stand out kinks that can not be contained. I never understood why my hair had to be this way. My hair breaks combs instead of gliding through them. My hair escapes the hair ties and rubber-bands that try to keep it captive. My hair needs multiple expensive gels to slick it down instead of just one. The hair that sits on top of my head is supposed to feel like a gold, jeweled crown but right now, it feels like a crown made of thorns just trying to pinch and pierce my scalp. I hate my THICK, DARK, STAND OUT KINKS that make me different. Will I ever be able to fit in?I HATE my hair. After she read this to me I was crushed! Am I a bad example of a black woman? What haven't I done to encourage my daughter to love the beautiful hair that grows out of her scalp? I totally understood how she was feeling. I understand hair issues. I understand how it feels not looking like others. After I delt with my issues I asked her to flip the narrative and write about the positives of her beautiful thick hair. This is what she wroteI Love My Hair -Leah Brown I love my hair. I have thick, dark, stand out kinks that are wild and free. My hair my favorite thing about me. My hair is too powerful to fit the mold. My hair sets trends instead of following them. My hair bounces with me when I jump up and down. My hair is expensive and deserves the best products around. My hair can be braided, twisted, and locked. On top of my head is a golden crown that makes me feel special. I love my thick, dark, standout kinks that make me different. I'm glad I don't fit in.

My interview with the brand new Rough Cutt lineup: Rockin' Dave Alford, Chris "The Count" Hager, Darren Housholder, Jeff Buehner, and Steven St. James before and after their first ever live show played together as a band, Black Friday in Portland, Oregon, November 29th, 2019. The new Rough Cutt brought the house down, sounding tight, polished, and as if they'd been playing the same songs together as long as Rockin' Dave and Chris Hager have. Before and after the show, I had a chance to sit down with all the members except Steve St. James and talk about the band, their future, whether there will be new music from Rough Cutt, and some of the stories from their long careers.
