Faithfully ServingJeff Haymond can be easily spotted on campus as he drives up in his vintage Cutlass convertible. But his love for vintage cars is just one small thing that makes his life interesting. Jeff served in the United States Air Force for 29 years, reaching the rank of Colonel before retiring in 2010. During those 29 years, Jeff collected numerous stories. But one he will never forget was his day at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Not only did he serve his country, but he also served a stranger in a remarkable way. While on a base in California, Jeff and other military members all donated blood, with the possibility of being matched with a recipient in need. Later he got a phone call saying his blood was a life-saving match for a 15-year-old Australian girl. Without hesitation, Jeff donated his stem cells to a girl with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, knowing he'd never meet her. After retiring from the military, Cedarville had a faculty opening, and Jeff decided to pursue it. He started as a professor of business, moved to assistant chair, and now finds himself the Dean of the Robert W. Plaster School of Business. Jeff is passionate about equipping and training his students to be prepared to face a hostile culture as they enter the business world after graduation.

Haymond Gunning is a shifter of minds — a seasoned neurological guide leading a group of scientists through the mindscape of a psychopath. Their mission: eliminate the Darkness that’s spreading. But as the team carves a path through the patient’s prefrontal cortex, Haymond gets the notion this expedition is nothing like the others. Shadows emerge bearing cryptic messages, mutated beasts prowl just beyond the camp’s perimeter, and impossible weather conditions complicate their travels. But nothing is random. Controlling it all is a singular entity, enigmatic and vile, whose sole intention is to repel the team from its dominion. If the experiment fails, the Institute risks dissolution. But luckily, Haymond has never failed to complete an expedition, and he’d do anything to keep his record pristine. As lies and manipulation twist the team’s understanding of reality, paranoia sets in, and their scrutiny turns inward. Can they maintain their current course and complete the experiment, or will they succumb to the very infection they’ve been sent to destroy? Several studies have suggested that prevention of atherosclerosis should begin in childhood as dyslipidemia in children is associated with severity of atherosclerotic lesions later in life. Pediatric lipid screening aims to identify children and adolescents with dyslipidemia, including both those with more severe genetic cases and those cases with mild to moderate lipid elevation due to secondary causes.
Welcome to Okracast, the podcast of the Southern Foodways Alliance! This week we’re meditating on Chinese immigrants to the South. First, Chef Wally Joe of Acre Restaurant in Memphis remembers the age of Chinese-owned grocery stores. These groceries were mainstays in the Mississippi Delta, run by Chinese immigrants who had come in search of better opportunities. “There was literally one on every corner—just like a Starbucks is now these days,” he says. Then SFA oral historian Sara Wood takes us to Portsmouth, Virginia to meet Patsy Wong. Mrs. Wong and her husband Haymond own Sing Wong restaurant, an establishment specializing in a dish called “yock-a-mein.” The yock of the Virginia Tidewater region is kin to New Orleans’ ya-ka-mein, and consists of lo-mein noodles, a protein, chopped onion, ketchup and a hard-boiled egg (optional). In Part 2 of my conversation with Faye we discuss what it was like having one her parents practice mormonism and if she still practices it today. She debunks some common myths about the religion, then we discuss how she diagnosed herself with bipolar disorder, going to therapy and how being bipolar affects her writing. We wrap up with some talk about her influences and how she writes and we nerd out with some movie, music and pop culture talk. A very fun conversation and please check out Faye's amazing work and support her art. Thanks for listening!
This week I"m joined by Faye Haymond who writes under the name of Donaya Haymond. She is a talented writer who at the age of 23 has already published 5 novels. In part 1 of our conversation Faye tells us how she came up with the ideas for her books and how her characters are very different than those in other series. She also discusses what it was like being diagnosed with bipolar disorder and how her parents dealt with it. She opens up about what it was like realizing she was gay and how she dealt with coming out to her parents. A really honest, candid conversation that I hope you will check out. If you like what we do over here, please spread the word and let people know. Check out Faye on Facebook, Twitter and purchase her books on Amazon and your local book store.
Here is the much anticipated second part with Faye Donaya Haymond. In this part, Faye and I discuss her extremely vivid dreams, self harm, people who have inspired Faye in her life, including the band "Steam Powered Giraffe" who is featured in the intro music in this episode and part 1. Faye also has a TV Tropes page and volunteers for "7 Cups of Tea". I always love where the conversation goes in the second half. You really start to get a feel for who the person is, and Faye does not disappoint. I love the metaphors she uses for every day life. If you're looking for an inspiring conversation, this is it. This experience has taught me so much about myself, interviewing an absolute, complete stranger. This was such a refreshing change of pace for me and I'm so glad I got to meet Faye. Faye contacted me through an ad I posted on Craigslist for new guests for the show. We met up last weekend by "Dippy" the Dinosaur in Oakland and discussed the novels she has written along with her bipolar disorder. Faye's pen name is her middle name, "Donaya". This was one of my favorite interviews because she was so open and interesting to talk to. You can tell she has experienced some great things already, at the young age of 23, and speaking with her felt like I was gaining insight and wisdom to some of my own relate able tendencies. In part 1 we uncover some of her first experiences in realizing her bipolar disorder, trying to explain it to her parents, and quickly being treated and put on medication. Faye also goes into some of her manic episodes and how all of this has affected her personal relationships through life. We also get into her "heterosexual phase", as she calls it, and she shares the inspiring story of coming out to her parents. I gained a whole new perspective on people with mental health issues when she spoke about her 3 week stay in a psychiatric ward and having to be on a precise amount of lithium to be stable. This was such a fascinating conversation, I know you're going to absolutely fall in love with Faye. Look for part 2 going up next week. Thanks for listening!
