A Note from James:Oh my gosh, every time, this is the second time I've talked to Gladys McGarey. Last year she was 102 years old, this year she's 103 years old. She wrote a book, The Well Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age, and it's coming out in paperback. And every time I read this book, I've read it twice now, and I talk to her, I almost feel like crying, and I don't really know why. It's almost as if she was born with wisdom, but then kept even growing for the next 102 years. Like she drove a Ford Model A car, and now she's talking to me through Zoom on the internet and going on podcasts, writing books. She was a doctor her whole life. She's been all over the world. She's had so many amazing experiences and also has suffered, of course, much loss. I don't think you're going to live to be that age and not have an incredible amount of loss that you have to learn to move past and still be positive and still live every day to its fullest. She had, she was riding a tricycle and it threw her off into the street and she broke three ribs. And she's now totally healed and on the podcast. I really look up to this woman a lot. Here's Gladys McGarey. We have a great conversation about all sorts of things and she's the author of The Well Lived Life. Episode Description:In this profound and enlightening conversation, James revisits the remarkable life of Dr. Gladys McGarey, who, at 103 years old, shares her 'six secrets to health and happiness at every age' from her book 'The Well Lived Life'. Reflecting on a life rich with experiences, from caring for patients across the globe to handling personal loss and surviving a recent tricycle accident, Dr. McGarey embodies resilience and wisdom. She discusses the importance of facing challenges, the transformative power of love and life, and how her encounters with notable figures like Milton Erickson shaped her understanding of human potential. Dr. McGarey's perspectives on aging, happiness, and living a meaningful life offer invaluable insights, emphasizing the significance of community, love, and choosing one's path with intention.Episode Summary:00:00 Celebrating a Century of Wisdom with Gladys McGarey02:04 The Resilience of a 103-Year-Old: Tricycle Accidents and Recovery05:11 Finding Humanity and Overcoming Loss06:04 The Power of Love and Life: A Personal Journey14:44 Exploring the Mind's Influence on Reality16:31 The Magic of Connection: A Story of a Plant and Dementia25:39 Embracing Life's Adventures and the Quest for True Humanity31:29 The Philosophy of Life, Love, and Humanity36:07 Navigating Life's Challenges with Optimism37:47 The Power of Choice in Overcoming Adversity40:39 Turning Pain into Purpose: A Personal Journey41:47 Action as a Catalyst for Change42:23 The Interplay of Life and Love44:13 Embracing Aging with Grace and Wisdom46:33 The Impact of Stress on Health and Well-being47:47 Finding Meaning and Joy Amidst Loss50:42 The Importance of Memory and Presence56:42 Exploring Spiritual Growth and Self-Discovery01:02:05 The Role of Technology and Community in Modern Life01:06:32 Reflecting on a Life Well Lived ------------What do YOU think of the show? Introducing Anine Ekelund, a transformative life coach with a degree in Holistic Health Education and an extensive background working with Fortune 500 companies. In a world where we often define ourselves by our accomplishments, Anine believes in the power of reconnecting with our authentic being. From early on, faced with a multitude of challenges - physical, mental, and emotional - Anine discovered the importance of self-care. At the tender age of 15, meditation became a refuge, and the journey continued with the discovery of yoga. It was through these practices that an epiphany emerged, revealing the intricate connection between body, mind, and spirit. Taking a leap of faith, Anine relocated to California, leaving behind the pursuit of business studies for a path in holistic health education. This newfound direction brought a profound sense of fulfillment, but life's twists and turns soon took Anine to Switzerland, where the absence of self-development opportunities, coupled with health issues and marital problems, led to a deep state of depression. In the midst of this darkness, a realization struck: personal ambitions and passions had been placed on the back burner to support her husband. Anine recognized a disconnection from her life's purpose, and it became clear that a change was necessary. Out of this introspection, a life purpose program was born - a simple, practical guide to help individuals connect with their true selves. Anine observed that countless people seemingly have it all, yet still struggle to find happiness. The reason lies in an overreliance on external factors, neglecting the crucial journey inward. It became evident that simplification was key, and that true fulfillment came from embracing the state of being rather than the constant pursuit of doing. By healing emotional wounds and shedding layers of protection, individuals can attract the right people and experiences into their lives. Prepare to embark on a transformative journey with the insightful Anine, as she guides you toward the realization that true happiness lies in reconnecting with your authentic self. Through her life purpose program, discover the power of simplification, healing, and self-acceptance, and unlock a world of profound personal growth and fulfillment. What You'll Learn: Why women put each other down and how to stop. How to find your life purpose. What the first personal growth book ever read was. And much more! Have you ever heard of Qigong? To put it simply, Qigong is a broad term that encompasses various styles and lineages of breath, visualization, and movement practices. One of the key benefits of practicing Qigong is its ability to improve physical health and well-being. Research has shown that Qigong can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, improve balance and coordination, and even boost the immune system. Today, I am bringing on my dear friend Vicki Dello Joio to talk more about Qigong and her work in energy and trauma and how it affects the body. I met Vicki many years ago when I took her class as part of my Holistic Health Education masters program. Her class was a turning point for me, as it solidified my interest in energy work and its connection to overall health and wellness. I knew then that I wanted to pursue this field further. In the episode, we cover: ✨The basics of Qigong and how Vicki got into this practice. ✨The power of connecting to your body and mind. ✨How the feminine can rise within her power. ✨The importance of self-defense for women. ✨And much more on energy work and movement! Vicki's work in energy and trauma is incredibly important and often overlooked when it comes to hormones and health, I am so excited to have her here today to share her knowledge with all of you. Vicki Dello Joio is a life-changing workshop leader, Qi (energy) master teacher and inspirational speaker. Since 1975, her brand of brilliance has empowered wellness-motivated and spiritually-inclined seekers to infuse body-mind-spirit practices into their very cells so they can tap into their birthright of joy — use it as a fuel not a goal — for a lifetime. In addition, Vicki has drawn from decades of theater performance, directing experience along with her life-long study of martial arts to fire up visionary speakers to amplify their charisma and deliver their message with passion, presence, and power. Her methods for both crafting stories AND her focus on the energy behind how they are told have touched and transformed hundreds of speakers to stand and deliver with joy, confidence, and ease. Popular host of monthly program Qi Talks and a Hall of Fame-recognized teacher of the Chinese Art of Qigong by the Association of Women Martial Arts Instructors, Vicki's “Spiritual Fitness” program and book, The Way of Joy, has transformed the lives of thousands of participants since 1975. This week, Dr. Stan hosts Lo Elizabeth, a Well-Being Coach and Leader, who was unlawfully terminated from her role at Kaiser Permanente for not getting the shot. Lo shares how her world was turned upside down when her employer failed to honor her religious accommodation. Despite the adversity and discrimination she faced, Lo found a new purpose, and is currently pursuing legal remedies to correct the injustices she has faced. You won't want to miss this inspirational discussion about leaning into your purpose and the importance of preserving sovereignty. If you are inspired by Lo and her story, please visit StandFirm.org to see how you can get involved. For the full episode, click on the link in the bio @futuregenpodcast. Lo Elizabeth Founder, Coaches for Freedom Well-Being Coach, Mentor, Trainer, & Consultant; MA, NBC-HWC, RYT, PCC(ip), member of MINT Lo Elizabeth is a Board-certified Well-Being Coach & Leader who was employed for 8 years with Kaiser Permanente at their top wellness coaching department. At the start of 2022, while in a leadership position Lo was discriminated against and unlawfully terminated amidst the injection mandates. Despite already being a remote worker even ‘pre-Rona', she was not given any option for accommodation and subsequently became the only one in the department to be denied an exemption and illegally terminated. Since then, she has been initiating grassroots community-building efforts amongst the hundreds of other illegally fired healthcare workers, while also taking actions to seek legal remedies. Lo is a single-independent mother, an Ordained Non-denominational Minister, and has a Master's degree in Holistic Health Education specialized in Somatic Psychology. With more than two decades of professional Coaching, health education, and medical advocacy experience, she has been mind blown and quite concerned about the incongruencies happening, especially in the “holistic” Coaching field where sovereignty is a foundational ethical principle. This has called her to found Coaches for Freedom, an initiative whose mission is to bring forward Coaches, Counselors, and Well-being practitioners who align with and stand for health freedom of body, mind, spirit, and Soul. Lo also hosts the Being Well-Beings podcast intended to focus on both stories and solutions in the well-being realm for both bridging while building a parallel path forward. If you've listened to this podcast, you already know that I'm a proponent of using dreams for practical purposes. On this episode you're going to meet another advocate of the benefits of dreams for improving our health, self-understanding and even finding lost objects! Bhaskar Banerji calls himself a Dream Ambassador. He believes his mission is to modernize the ancient traditions of dreamwork and to increase dream literacy in the general population. One of his main focuses is on using dreams for healing purposes. His extensive study of dreamwork has uncovered many practical benefits and he shares with us:•how his dreams cured a health issue•the three different types of healing dreams•why dream incubation works•how to create your own dream sanctuary•how your attitude affects your dreams•why we dream about foodThere are so many reasons why you don't want to leave your dreams on your pillow. Learn how to make the most of your dreams on this revealing episode of Dream Power Radio.Bhaskar considers himself an ambassador from the dream world. Without dreams he would be completely lost in this uncertain journey of life. Almost every major career change has been initiated by dreams, both big and small. Dreams have helped him navigate illness and maybe even prevented a few. On his travels around the globe, dreams have kept him safe. Dreams have consistently pointed out his blind spots and weaknesses thus facilitating his psychological evolution. Dreams have provided him with hope and guidance in times of despair. They have revealed to him who is a true friend as well as who is foe. From this list, it should be clear that he really depends on dreams for both physical survival and psychological well-being. He obtained his Masters in Holistic Health Education from JFKU and his PhD in Mind-Body Medicine from Saybrook University where he focused on investigating the relationship between illness and dreams. Can dreams forewarn us of impending disease? Can they prescribe treatments for those who are ill? Can they tell us whether our current course of treatment will succeed in restoring our health? Can they guide us in the direction of health and wellness? Of late, he has developed a 21-day, self-paced, on-line course to help people extract information about their health from their dreams. She is the author of two books, one a raw food cook book's 'Recipes for Living Deep' and The Wild Wisdom of Seeds (linked below). The Mission Statement of Turtle Lake Refuge says that it exists to celebrate the connection between personal health and wild lands. We are inspired to promote and practice sustainable ways of living, honouring wild nature and the evolution of community. Soul Soil: Where Agriculture and Spirit Intersect with Brooke Kornegay
Nature is inherently abundant. No one has to spray the forests or plant the wetlands in order for them to thrive in perfect balance. As such, food gathered from the wild has the highest potential to nourish us on a deep level. When we realize that we have access to this bounty without having to intervene and sweat and toil (the original definition of agriculture!)…when we truly know this, then we can begin to release our scarcity mentality, relax our grip, our need to control. This shift is particularly liberating. Katrina Blair began studying wild plants in her teens when she camped out alone for a summer to embrace a wild foods diet. She later wrote “The Wild Edible and Medicinal Plants of the San Juan Mountains” for her senior project at Colorado College. She completed a MA at John F Kennedy University in Holistic Health Education. She founded Turtle Lake Refuge in 1998, a non-profit, whose mission is to celebrate the connection between personal health and wild lands. Turtle Lake Refuge includes a wild living foods café, sustainable education center and community farm. Katrina teaches permaculture and wild edible and medicinal classes locally and globally. She is author of several books including: “Local Wild Life- Turtle Lake Refuge’s Recipes for Living Deep” and “ The Wild Wisdom of Weeds: 13 Essential Plants for Human Survival. In this episode… Early influences and experiences with plants On beginning a conservation-focused nonprofit that manages parks and open spaces organically How plants can teach us from the inside out The life-changing impact of cultivating space — in your day, in your diet, in your mind How wild foods affect your mind, body, and spirit When we realize that we’re part of Nature, and Nature is inherently abundant…something shifts inside us and we can release our scarcity story Resources Turtle Lake Refuge The Wild Wisdom of Weeds: 13 Essential Plants for Human Survival by Katrina Blair The Essene Gospel of Peace The Hippocrates Diet and Health Program by Ann Wigmore

Do you think holistically about your physical AND mental health? May is Mental Health Awareness month, and this show will challenge your thinking about what it means to be mentally healthy, how to cope with the seasons of life, and what you should have in your self-care toolkit. Dr. Phyllis Hubbard is the Director of BMA Health & Healing Strategies, an innovative wellness program founded in Oakland and functioning within the Campaign for Black Male Achievement. Dr. Phyl (a.k.a. “The Body Whisperer”) is a motivational speaker, Board Certified Doctor of Natural Medicine, an Ayurvedic Practitioner, Life and Mental Health Coach, Qigong Instructor, Reiki Master, and Licensed Massage Therapist (#MA64036). Her wide range of professional education also includes Holistic Health Education, Injury Prevention Training, Therapeutic Nutrition & Movement, Clinical Aromatherapy, and Herbology. Having used holistic healing strategies to reverse a supposedly incurable illness (COPD--Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), Dr. Phyl now facilitates illness prevention and health intervention programs that promote self-empowerment and help restore balance in the mind and body through the use of a synergistic blend of holistic healing modalities. Her straightforward and humorous presentations blend ancient holistic wisdom with cutting-edge research in a way that is fun and easy to understand. She travels nationally and internationally as a Holistic Health Educator and to research indigenous holistic practices to integrate into her healing techniques and workshops. Becoming a Naturopath What would you do to regain your health? Dr. Phyl saw the brutal rape of a young child when she was a girl, and a subsequent asthma attack developed into bronchitis and COPD. In her 20’s she felt her health--and her life--slipping away and knew she had to do something. She found a book about Ayurvedic medicine and began the journey to healing. Three months later, the cough stopped and never returned. She became a naturopathic doctor and started teaching others about the pathway to radiant health. TWEET: “There is no bad part of you, only parts of you longing for love, acceptance, or transmutation.” #ChasingDreams @Getradiant The Seasons of Life How do you handle life’s difficulties? Many people don’t realize that the seasons of life are part of the ebb and flow of the cycles we go through. We are supposed to experience a wide range of emotions and not expect things to be the same. The challenge is that we have to understand the process of how emotions move through us and don’t get stuck in us. For example, depression occurs when things get stuck in us and don’t pass through. Dr. Phyl says that our minds are like gardens that have to be tended, pruned, and taken care of. TWEET: “You have the wisdom and ability to achieve and maintain radiant #health.” @GetRadiant #ChasingDreams Your Mental Health What do you do when stress comes your way? We all have trauma and early losses from childhood. Dr. Phyl says you have to go back and visit your childhood with your adult eyes. Other factors that affect mental health are stress, chemical imbalances, weather, and medical conditions. These things shift our perspective and add extra stressors. Look at your life from a holistic perspective. With mental health, there is always something that’s layered on top of something else. Mental health issues can affect anyone and everyone. Dr. Phyl gives the following recommendations: Develop a mental health self-care toolkit Have a non-negotiable daily practice When in pain, refrain Perform a pain release exercise Do your best to avoid knee-jerk reactions (Breathe, pause, and then speak) Dr. Phyl also shares the following favorite true-isms: You have the choice and power to change your life. You have the wisdom and ability to achieve and maintain radiant health There is no bad part of you, only parts of you longing for love, acceptance, or transmutation. There’s nothing quite like in-person connection to really feel a strong sense of community. That’s why today I’m excited to (for the second time this week!) do something a little bit differently on our podcast. For the first time, I’m inviting two members from our community into a conversation with me-- and all of you. Both are very cool women who are up to equally cool things in the world. In our conversation, we chat about: - How to shift away from a yoga & meditation practice that feels stuck, rigid, and forced to one that feels organic, flowing, and authentic - Ways to explore your sexuality in your spiritual practice so that you feel less “tight” in all areas of your life - Why Jenn renamed our training the “Mystic Rebels Gathering” (I love this!) - What shifts Jenn and Michelle experienced in the realms of career and motherhood as a result of letting go of all they had been taught about yoga & embracing their own truths Jennifer Racioppi is an astrologer, holistic health counselor (AADP), success coach, and a Duke-certified integrative health coach who blends her expertise in business, positive psychology, and women's health to coach high-achieving women reaching their next level of success. Her Lunar Logic philosophy integrates the deep wisdom of both science and astrology, helping women build a foundation of resilience, step into their authentic leadership, and stay faithful to their dreams.
