The cell membrane is the brain of the cell and plays a crucial role in regulating what enters and exits the cell. Omega-6 fatty acids, such as linoleic acid, are important for cell membrane structure and function. Balancing omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids is key for optimal health. Industrial seed oils should be avoided, while whole food sources of essential fatty acids, such as egg yolks, liver, and seeds, should be included in the diet. Consuming a balanced ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is important for overall health. Eating food seasonally and locally provides optimal nutrition and supports local farmers. Whole food sources of essential fatty acids, such as caviar, are beneficial for health. BodyBio's fish oil is a superior choice due to its phospholipid form and high quality sourcing.   Keywords: Justine, health field, cell membrane medicine, mitochondrial health, phospholipids, essential fatty acids, cellular health, detoxification, cell membrane, omega-6 fatty acids, essential fatty acids, essential fatty acids, omega-3, omega-6, balanced ratio, seasonal eating, local food, phospholipid form, fish oil

These membranes act as a semi-permeable barrier, regulating everything that enters and exits the cell. Our organelles also have membranes, and if they don't have a membrane, they are interacting with one. Membranes are essential! When we have healthy membranes, we are set up for optimal cellular health. The mitochondrial membrane is particularly crucial due to the role the inner membrane plays in oxidative phosphorylation—the generation of ATP (energy) and water. The better our mitochondrial functioning, the better our overall health. Phospholipids are the most potent and powerful deposit into your biochemical bank account!  Light Exposure - Exposure to the wrong type of light at the wrong time can wreak havoc on our cellular health. Your cells all have clock genes that are regulated by sunlight. Morning sunlight is the most important signal to give your body to regulate the 1 billion biochemical reactions that are taking place in your cells every single second. Complete darkness after sunset is equally important to support processes like autophagy, melatonin release, the docking of leptin in the hypothalamus, and much more. The harm that LED lights, which emit blue light, have on our health cannot be overstated. Excessive exposure to blue light, especially at night, can disrupt circadian rhythms, impair sleep quality, and contribute to various health issues such as increased stress, decreased immune function, metabolic disturbances, and eventually chronic disease. There has been a 500% increase in breast cancer due to blue light exposure at night (which comes from cell phones).  Tips For Decreasing Blue Light -Change phone screen to red light and filter out blue light Settings -> accessibility -> display and text size -> color filters -> click red/green filter then check mark color tint -> pull the intensity and hue as far to the right as possible   Settings -> display and brightness -> check light and turn brightness down as much as possible -Get red light bulbs for your home - Download Iris on your computer to filter blue light - Purchase blue light glasses for nighttime use   - Purchase red light glasses for daytime use Use code: JUSTINE85659 to save 20% 3. Limit Radio Waves with Phones, Internet, and Headphones -Consider hiring a building biologist to look at EMF's in your home  - Hardwire computers to internet connections instead of using wifi -Keep your cell phone off your body -Limit cell phone use but when using do not hold to your head/ear – put on speakerphone if talking -Get headphones that do not use Bluetooth! -Turn off as many settings on your phone as possible (try only using phone with wifi on – turing off all other settings below will decrease radiofrequency over 100x)  - Settings -> Cellular -> Personal Hotspot -> off  - Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data -> off - Settings -> Cellular -> Personal Hotspot -> off - Settings -> Bluetooth -> off - Settings -> Wifi -> off 4. Earth Exposure – ground on the earth with your bare feet as much as possible, especially when using a cell phone (avoid turf as it is full of chemicals) -Plant flowers or garden  5. Food Exposure – choose foods that are rich in electrons like oysters, other sources of wild seafood, coconut, fresh fruits and vegetables (in season) Eat in season – don't eat fruits and vegetables in the winter if they do not grow where you live!  6. Body Bio Supplements – use code ME for 15% off Phospholipid complex – building blocks for your cell membranes - restores and support cell membranes  Balance oil – healthy fats that strengthen cell structures to keep mitochondria working with linoleic and alpha linoleic acid in 4:1 ratio which is ideal for cellular health

Her guidance is backed by over twenty years of clinical experience and scientific research with complex neurological and physiological needs; particularly autism. She has lectured in more than 60 cities across three continents, been on television, radio, newspaper, blogs/podcasts and more, and published scientifically referenced articles in journals and websites. Julie's been featured by Price-Pottenger, honored by the National Association of Nutrition Professionals, sits on two scientific advisory boards including the Autism Nutrition Research Center. Julie is co-author of “gold standard” scientific research published in the journal Nutrients, demonstrating the efficacy of diet and nutrition intervention for autism spectrum disorder and a study on “The Effectiveness of 13 Therapeutic Diets for Autism” published in the Journal of Personalized Medicine. Julie is a dynamic speaker that's educated professionals at trainings for Integrative Medicine for Mental Health, Autism Research Institute/DAN!, Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs, and the MINDD International Forum in Australia. During her early nutrition studies in 2001, Julie discovered that food and nutrition influenced the disorder of autism. She committed to investigate the connections and to explain them to parents and clinicians that can make a difference helping children recover. Her final research paper at Bauman College became the basis for her award-winning book Nourishing Hope for Autism, which won the gold metal in 2009 for “Most Progressive Health Book.” It explains WHY food and nutrition affects the varied systems and biochemical pathways routinely occurring in autism and HOW to strategically apply a specialized diet to help children heal. After many years in practice, it became evident to Julie that the dietary approaches that helped the most difficult clients, were useful in healing most chronic conditions. And because autism is one of the most complex disorders (with underlying immune/autoimmune, digestive, neurological, and metabolic dysfunction issues), it provides a unique perspective on chronic disease that helps Julie teach others to see hidden connections between symptoms, circumstances, and effective healing dietary strategies for a wide variety of complex conditions. She founded Nourishing Hope in 2005 to stand for the efficacy of improved diet and nutrition for autism, and the BioIndividual Nutrition Institute in 2014 to share the synthesis of her knowledge with cutting edge clinicians to help improve their effectiveness with therapeutic diets. Julie has concurrently been focused on Nutrition for Healthy Pregnancy and Baby, putting all of her research, knowledge, and experience into teaching prevention/promoting health. “Food as your medicine is anything that's not processed. These are things that we should be eating [because they] prevent you from having to take drugs. So if you're interested in health, you should be eating holistically in that regard.” —Kevin Bressani Your best self starts on the plate! The food we put on our plates each day has a profound impact on our health and well-being. Yet in our fast-paced world, it's easy to lose sight of how the small daily choices around what we eat can nourish our minds and bodies. During his travels abroad, Healthy Roots Chef Kevin Bressani was exposed to permaculture and the connection between soil health, biodiversity, and nutrition. This experience brought him to an awareness of how this impacts the whole food production process, and ultimately the health of the consumers. In this conversation, Chef Kevin shares insights into how eating for optimal health starts on the plate by cooking in tune with the seasons from sustainable, organic sources. Justine and Chef Kevin also delve into how prioritizing whole, minimally processed foods and supporting local farms through our shopping decisions can help optimize wellness from the ground up. Tune in to learn practical strategies for making meals that not only taste delicious but also care for people and the planet. Meet Kevin:  Chef Kevin Bressani has always been passionate about food and nutrition. As a young kid, he became interested in cooking by watching great chefs such as Jacques Pepin and Julia Child on television. This interest sparked a desire to work in various restaurants and to travel around the world to places like Australia where he worked and learned on organic and biodynamic farms. Kevin also traveled to Belize to study the natural healing power of plants and herbs with traditional Mayan healers. Through these adventures, he became inspired to nourish his community by creating healthy meals.    In 2009, he enrolled in the Natural Chef program at Bauman College in Berkeley, California.  He polished his culinary skills and expanded his knowledge of therapeutic cooking at Bauman College and an internship at Three Stone Hearth, a community supported kitchen in Berkeley, CA.  Chef Kevin believes that food is a powerful medicine and a vital component in our own longevity.  As a personal chef, his cooking philosophy emphasizes the use of whole, local, and organic foods to provide every cell in the body with the vital nutrients and minerals needed to stay healthy and prevent disease.   Website  LinkedIn     Connect with NextGen Purpose: Website Facebook Instagram  LinkedIn YouTube Episode Highlights: 01:30 Food Choices and Seasonal Eating  05:59 Personalized Meal Planning and Holistic Health  11:13 Private Chef Services 15:59 Evolving a Food Business with a Focus on Healthy Products

If you are in health and wellness, you know at this point it’s not just about diet and exercise. It’s about a full, well rounded approach to how you live and how you consume. Fitness, nutrition, sleep, mindfulness… and now toxins! Who knew there was more to worry about? Until recently, we let the majority of our purchasing behaviors be steered by our family and friend (our immediate environment aka influencers) or straight up marketing. Until recently, we didn’t even know what to question or how…. Our make-up, detergent, air fresheners? Again, it’s overwhelming to know how much you need to know to live as clean as you can.  AND the more you dig in and do the research you really see how much you don’t know. Hello outsourcing. Find someone who lives and works in the space and consult them accordingly. That person is Karen for me. She is a long time, great friend that I met while training at FRCF #fitfam. She has all the makings of a great advisor/coach… certifications, degrees, AND she lives it. She talks about training, tips, tricks, sources on where to find the right stuff, questions to ask… and if you don’t need the ENTRIE clean life 411, she can just tell you what to do and what not to do:). I have come to her many times over the years for nutrition, recovery, supplement advice and now beauty products! I had no idea how many toxins were in the things we were consuming every day and how much is absorbed in our skin. AND a lot of companies know this… WTF. So just like the nutrition and fitness space, transparency is not the highest priority. Karen and I chat all things clean beauty, questions to ask, why she loves and supports Beautycounter (google them if you don’t know already) and how they are taking things to the next level fighting for further beauty regulations federally. I highly recommend everyone watch the NetFlix Doc, Stink, it sums up why you should be wondering what we are putting on our bodies, cleaning our houses with, and what products that are not consumer packaged goods are treated with. Its mind blowing. Cheers to clean living, one convo and product at a time! Highlights: Clean beauty. Holding companies accountable. Questioning a better way. Ramifications of these toxins? Karen’s fitness and wellness journey. Good options. What you can do to help make a difference. Balance and beauty. Out spoken women and pups:)   Karen Rylander Karen is a certified nutrition consultant passionate about helping clients uncover their innate, primal health buried under all of our modern toxins.  She's a native Texan, but has called Colorado home the past 20 years. She's been working as a certified nutrition consultant since 2011 when she graduated from Bauman College. She also has a Food and Wine certification from CookStreet and a B.A. in Anthropology from University of Colorado. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I am your host, Cassy Joy Garcia. And today I am thrilled to bring you one of my personal teachers and mentors that has really helped. I went through his schooling program, Bauman College, a couple of years ago. And from there, launched my own holistic nutrition practice. So I’m going to tell you a little bit about him; Dr. Ed Bauman. The namesake. Dr. Ed Bauman has been a pioneer in the field of holistic nutrition for over 35 years. His vision and leadership have inspired thousands of people to transform their lives. I would argue that’s even more than thousands of people since then. In the form of wellness, community, and peace. He received his M. Ed. From the University of Massachusetts, and a PhD in health promotion from the University Of New Mexico. Dr. Bauman created the eating for health model to teach individuals to make nutritionally comprehensive food choices. He founded Bauman College in 1989 with a mission to change the world through better nutrition and healthful living. He is a special advisor for the National Association of Nutritional Professionals, and brings a wealth of knowledge, wisdom, and love of good health and good taste to his work. Welcome to the show, Dr. Bauman! Dr. Ed Bauman: Oh, I’m so happy to be here with you and all of our listeners. Cassy Joy: Yes! Absolutely. I just can’t wait for them to hear from you. So that was just a very brief introduction. And I know that all of your professional accomplishments, especially more recent ones, far exceed what I read. If you don’t mind, tell us a little bit more about yourself, and about Bauman College. Dr. Ed Bauman: Ok. Well, I got started on this path when I was 23 years old. And now I’m 71. So if you do the math, that’s quite a long time. I’ve always been interested in health, and food, and community. And really, forward progressive thought and action. So I was a child of the 50s and 60s, and saw that the culture was really off track. And it really didn’t represent innate natural health values, or spirituality. I’m a good student, and teacher, and I love my work. I was fortunate to buy an organic farm with my friends. It was a commune in 1970. So a pretty young age. So I learned about nutrition from the ground up. I cooked on a wood stove, and I grew food, and did fermentation, and drying, and pickling, and all that good stuff way back as a youngster. Looking at academia, I didn’t find nutritional teachings were valid at all.

Which is available for free from iTunes. In September 2016, Diane released an updated and expanded second edition of her runaway hit, Practical Paleo. Which has sold over half a million copies and spent a total of 97 weeks on the New York Times’ bestseller list. That is so incredible, every time I see that. On January 2nd, 2018, Diane will release the 21-Day Sugar Detox Daily Guide; a day by day handbook for her popular program, the 21-Day Sugar Detox, also known as #21DSD. Diane lives in San Francisco with her husband, Scott, and two fur kids. Welcome to the show, Diane! Diane Sanfilippo: Hi! Cassy Joy: {laughs} Hi. Diane Sanfilippo: Hi friend. Cassy Joy: Oh hi. {laughs} Diane Sanfilippo: Thanks for having me. Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh. Thank you so much for coming on. I can’t wait to tell everybody about this new project. About what you're up to. I know so much thought and effort goes into everything that you do. But I’m really, really thrilled for this. And thrilled for what’s coming up in the New Year. Tell us a little bit about your latest project? Diane Sanfilippo: So, let’s see. It’s December now. Sometime in the fall of last year,

We can feel sick, and gradually we feel better. We kind of forget how sick we felt. So, we don't connect what we're eating to how we felt. – Maria Quintana-Pilling On this episode of the Plan Simple Meals Podcast, I'm really excited to talk with Maria Quintana-Pilling, Functional Nutrition and Lifestyle Practitioner. She's a health coach who teaches live and online cooking classes, and she knows a lot about food, so this is going to be a fun conversation! Health and how we feel in our bodies is a wake up call to a lot of my guests. That was my story as well. Maria started to dabble in nutrition after being diagnosed with fibroids, and after surgery to remove fibroids, she got really serious about it. She found that the changes she made were more nuanced than some people report, but still profound. We dive into going gluten-free and dairy-free, including why you might want to try it and how to approach it. We look at the difference between gluten-free and grain-free and why to try one over the other. We talk about: Things you might not have considered when you think about gluten-free (condiments, alcohol, makeup?) How different foods work for different people, how what works for us may change at different stages of our lives, and the kinds of clues your body gives you about foods that may not work for you Why soaking or sprouting grains is important Using pesto and quinoa or rice bowl for more balanced meals Ways of balancing protein, fats and carbs that don't look like a traditional plate Why detoxes are helpful BIO Maria Quintana-Pilling is a certified functional nutritionist and lifestyle practitioner, certified nutrition consultant and natural chef, specializing in digestive and women's health issues. She received nutrition training from Bauman College in Berkeley, CA, the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Patagonia, AZ, and Holistic Nutrition Lab Full Body Systems. She runs short detoxes and in-person and online cooking classes. She's is the mom to a 7-year-old son. LINKS Contact Maria Maria's Urban Spice Nutrition website with summer detox & quinoa bowl recipe Mia's Go to Rice bowls   Doable Changes from this episode: TRY QUINOA BOWLS. I've talked about how I use rice bowls as an easy, adaptable meal, and I love Maria's suggestion of a quinoa version. Find links to both above. Grain bowls are very adaptable—you can use different grains, proteins, veggies and seasonings. And if you put the different components in separate bowls, it's easy to adapt for different nutrition needs and tastes.  UPGRADE YOUR SNACKS. Remember that we need a balance of proteins, fats, and carbs. Choose whole food snacks with an aim to include all three. One way to do this is to add some nut butter to a fruit snack. DO A 5-DAY DETOX. A detox gives your liver a break from processed food and refined sugars and other things like caffeine and alcohol, allowing it to do its job better. The first couple of days can be really hard, so it can be usefu l to have the support of a group, but people usually start feeling better around day 3. If you aren't ready to give up sugar or processed foods altogether, try a detox.     REALLY getting healthy as a family can be a big lifestyle change. But no matter how insurmountable it may feel, focusing on one doable change at a time can help you take small steps toward your big goal. A healthy lifestyle is really made of lots of little things that when repeated regularly and added together over time make a huge impact on your life. Choose one Doable Change every Sunday night — one thing that you are willing to play with for the week. The key is to keep it doable and fun! Write that thing on a sticky note or your phone so you remember it. Then put 3 things on your calendar that support it. Choose from the changes above or download a list of 101 Doable Changes we made for you. http://plansimplemeals.com/101-doable-changes/   If you are as psyched as I am to grow veggies on a patio this summer and indoors all winter, you are going to want to check this out! I have watched friends have these for years, and am so excited to have my own! (Psssst… There are amazing curriculums that have been created by the company, to make these a no brainer for schools too!) This week, we are doing it with Diana Sanfilippo, who is the best-selling author of this book that I actually happen to have with me, Practical Paleo. Now, this has been dubbed the Paleo Bible by readers everywhere. It came out, I think in 2012 and spent many many weeks on the New York Times’ Bestseller’s list. I think she has sold over 500,000 copies, which is pretty impressive. [00:01:00] If you’re not familiar with Diane, she is owner, founder of Balanced Bites. She is also a certified nutrition consultant and of course the New York Times’ Bestselling Author. She got an impressive resume. It was awesome to have her on the show today. We literally dive into the topics of what does it mean to leave a practical paleo life, how she implements it in her lifestyle and what she has learned since the book has first come out. We get into, she is now releasing a revised edition of the book very soon by the time you’re hearing this podcast. Also, why revise a book as opposed to writing a new one as well. I guess the four years in between, if any reveres a change. We’re getting into all sorts of topics including stress management, her exercise routines and all sorts. It was great. It was awesome to have her on the show. She is definitely a wealth of information and certainly making people think about the way they eat, which is what we are all for. Now, if you are listening to this on iTunes, if you could leave us a review, that would be fantastic. It just helps to spread the word. We want to get people listening to this for free, the reviews help us internationally as well. [00:02:00] By subscribing in it as well, put five stars, so if you are enjoying these podcasts and consuming on a regular basis, a, it would be great to hear from you. Let us know. Also of course, help others find this podcast too. Yeah, we just love getting it out there. Anyway, let’s go over to the show and over to Diane. Enjoy. Guy Hi, this is Guy Lawrence. I’m joined with Stu Cook as always. Hi Stu. Stu Hello mate. Guy Our lovely guest today is Diane Sanfilippo. Diane, welcome to the show. Diane Thanks for having me. Guy [00:03:00] I hope I got the surname correct. Now, before I get into the questions and start hitting you, I have to say, I’ve got your book here. My fiancee absolutely pulls this apart and loves it. I know she is very excited to know that you’re being interviewed today. That’s awesome, mate. It’s incredibly. Now, before we get into the book and everything else that you do, the first question I like to ask everyone on the show is if you were, say, at a bus stop and you were stopped by a complete stranger on the street and asked you what you did for a living, what would you say? Diane I always struggle with that question because I often don’t know how to describe what I do. Typically, these days, I say I’m an author. I write health and nutrition cookbooks, some thing to that effect. It often depends on who is asking and what they might understand. If they’re someone much older who wouldn’t really get the whole online Internet-based business, programs and all of that. Typically, I do say I’m an author and I write nutrition-based cookbooks because that’s the bulk of it at this point, I suppose. Karen Diggs is a Certified Nutrition Consultant & Therapeutic Chef and inventor of the Kraut Source. After graduating from the California Culinary Academy, Karen got on a jet and flew off to Hong Kong.  There, she worked as a chef for the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and also helped to open two eateries in that magnificent city of 7 million people (crowded into 426 square miles). In 2004, while washing dishes in her kitchen, Karen had an epiphany!  The epiphany went something  like this: “Wow, maybe it’s good to combine cooking with nutrition?!”  After all, didn’t someone from long ago say ” Let food by thy medicine and medicine by thy food”?  (It was Hippocrates who said that, by the way.) So, Karen went back to school and obtained her certification as a Nutrition Consultant in 2006 from Bauman College. Now, Karen merges her deep and innate culinary skills with her knowledge of holistic nutrition to help individuals achieve optimal health through detoxification and weight loss workshops, therapeutic cooking classes, and private nutrition consultations.
