A Note from James:Oh my gosh, every time, this is the second time I've talked to Gladys McGarey. Last year she was 102 years old, this year she's 103 years old. She wrote a book, The Well Lived Life: A 102-Year-Old Doctor's Six Secrets to Health and Happiness at Every Age, and it's coming out in paperback.  And every time I read this book, I've read it twice now, and I talk to her, I almost feel like crying, and I don't really know why. It's almost as if she was born with wisdom, but then kept even growing for the next 102 years. Like she drove a Ford Model A car, and now she's talking to me through Zoom on the internet and going on podcasts, writing books. She was a doctor her whole life. She's been all over the world. She's had so many amazing experiences and also has suffered, of course, much loss. I don't think you're going to live to be that age and not have an incredible amount of loss that you have to learn to move past and still be positive and still live every day to its fullest. She had, she was riding a tricycle and it threw her off into the street and she broke three ribs. And she's now totally healed and on the podcast. I really look up to this woman a lot. Here's Gladys McGarey. We have a great conversation about all sorts of things and she's the author of The Well Lived Life. Episode Description:In this profound and enlightening conversation, James revisits the remarkable life of Dr. Gladys McGarey, who, at 103 years old, shares her 'six secrets to health and happiness at every age' from her book 'The Well Lived Life'. Welcome back to Mick Unplugged! In today's episode, we dive into an eye-opening discussion with Dr. Anthony Mazzella, a trailblazer in integrated medicine and holistic care. Together with your host Mick Hunt, Dr. Mazzella challenges conventional wisdom on boundaries in relationships, offering insights into the value of getting closer to someone's subjective experience for true understanding and conflict resolution. We delve deep into psychodynamic and psychoanalytic therapies, exploring how they address root causes rather than just symptoms. Dr. Mazzella sheds light on complex topics like narcissism and borderline personality disorder, emphasizing the importance of self-reflection and effective communication. We'll also touch on the fascinating intersections of depression, anxiety, and personality disorders, and how nuanced approaches can lead to better mental health outcomes. And for those battling sleepless nights, both Mick and Dr. Mazzella share their unique strategies for turning insomnia into productivity. So, get ready for a transformative and enlightening conversation that promises to shift your perspective on mental wellness and relationships. Let's get unplugged!   Takeaways ·      Self-reflection and understanding are crucial in relationships with narcissists. ·      Closer communication and validation can help manage conflicts with narcissistic individuals. ·      Narcissism and borderline personality disorder have overlapping characteristics but differ in terms of self-image and emotional regulation. ·      Depression and anxiety can be symptoms of underlying personality disorders and may require a different approach to treatment.   Sound Bites "You're one of the very few people that are qualified." "Get as close as possible to what just happened." "Appreciating somebody's subjective experience."   Here are 3 Key Takeaways: Beyond Boundaries: Dr. Mazzella challenges the conventional approach of "creating boundaries" in relationships by suggesting that we sometimes need to get closer to understand each other's subjective experiences. This isn't about tolerating abuse but fostering deeper connections and empathy. Understanding Over Labels: Labeling someone as a "narcissist" can escalate conflicts and hinder understanding. Dr. Mazzella emphasizes the need for psychoanalytic approaches that work on underlying issues rather than just addressing the symptoms. Handling Dysregulated Emotional States: When someone is in an emotionally charged state, the first step is to validate their feelings. Acknowledgment and validation help move them from a place of distress to one where they can reflect and manage their emotions better.

Reflecting on a life rich with experiences, from caring for patients across the globe to handling personal loss and surviving a recent tricycle accident, Dr. McGarey embodies resilience and wisdom. She discusses the importance of facing challenges, the transformative power of love and life, and how her encounters with notable figures like Milton Erickson shaped her understanding of human potential. In this weeks episode of "Pushing the Limits" I interview one of the world's leading phytochemical and nutrigenomics researchers who specializes in sulforaphane.  Todays episode is all about improving cellular health, the core of health, and how activating the Nrf2 pathway through such phytonutrients like Sulforaphane (the precursors of which Glucoraphanin and Myrosinase) are found in Broccoli sprouts and other cruciferous veggies.  You will learn: How sulforaphane upregulates the Nrf2 pathway  How the Nrf2 pathway acts as a master switch, turning on over 250 genes and impacting thousands of enzymes in their function.  How the Nrf2 pathway upregulates the cells own intelligent endogenous antioxidant systems  Why just throwing a bunch of antioxidants into the body doesn't work in quenching oxidative stress The impact of upregulating Nrf2 in relation to the gut  How it has system wide implications  Why probiotics don't colonize the gut like you think they do How probiotics (or certain strains) can still be useful in immune modulation  Why you should have a food first approach The traps to watch out for when buying a 'sulforaphane' supplement and why most of the ones on the market are a waste of your time and money How long you should take it, typical dosing regimens, combinations with other phytonutrients and supplements. How to use this information to optimize your health  Why it pays to work with one of Dr Christines trained G.E.M.M protocol trained clinicians  Why some people have a reaction when they start, and why that means you need it most and how to adjust the dosing while not giving up    BIO Dr Christine Houghton has enjoyed a fulfilling and varied career in Nutritional Medicine spanning more than 30 years — and her influential work continues to stay at the forefront of this rapidly evolving profession. As a clinician, author and educator, she is dedicated to promoting a model of health care that closely reflects the diet and lifestyle choices Mother Nature would choose herself. An individual's unique biochemistry is a significant contributor to this model. Christine's intense appreciation of the power of food as therapy began in the 1970s, an era when there were very few supplements available. With few other choices, she soon discovered the real power of food as a potent clinical intervention tool; to this day, she adopts a 'food first' philosophy. A decade into practice, she established a thriving multi-disciplinary practice, the Centre for Integrated Medicine near Brisbane. There, she specialized in musculoskeletal conditions, glucose-regulating disorders including type 2 diabetes and other cardio metabolic conditions, digestive health and infant and child health, especially those associated with immune dysfunction. Passionate about the relationship between nutrients, phytochemicals and cellular defenses, Christine subsequently engaged in research at the University of Queensland, earning her a PhD in Nutritional Biochemistry-Nutrigenomics. Christine is highly-regarded internationally as an expert in the clinical application of the broccoli-derived phytochemical, Sulforaphane in human health. As founding director of Cell-Logic, she has formulated a number of nutrigenomically-active supplements which are underpinned by her doctoral research. In addition to her scientific and other publications, Christine is the co-author of two evidence-based nutrigenomics courses: FOUNDATIONS IN NUTRIGENOMICS and ADVANCED TRANSLATIONAL NUTRIGENOMICS, both self-paced online courses for practicing clinicians and the only comprehensive courses of their kind available anywhere globally. A regular speaker at Australian and international conferences, Christine is an engaging speaker whose evidence-based presentations often challenge existing paradigms.   Health Optimisation and Life Coaching with Lisa Tamati Lisa offers solution focused coaching sessions to help you find the right answers to your challenges. “When we say ‘treatment for menopause,' it implies that menopause is a disease, when really it's a normal and expected time of life,” says Dr. Anna Barbieri, an integrative medicine physician and specialist in menopause certified by the North American Menopause Society. That attentiveness to word choice is reflective of a new perspective that's driving Dr. Barbieri and her peers to see menopause more holistically than in the past and to forge new approaches to the care they provide. "Menopause care is not checkbox medicine. We have to work with our patients individually," Barbieri shares with special guest host Dr. Deborah Enegess, herself a practicing gynecologist as well as a clinical content writer for Osmosis. A personalized approach involves tailoring care plans that take exercise, nutrition, sleep, stress management and other lifestyle and psychological factors into account in an effort to help patients feel better in the short term and longer term.  Providers also have to contend with a shift in long-held thinking about the use of hormone therapy and a bewildering array of supplements that are touted as effective remedies for various symptoms.  To help sort through all of this complexity, new resources have come on the scene in recent years, including the digital platform Elektra Health -- of which Barbieri is the founding physician -- that describes its mission as “smashing the menopause taboo.” Check out this engaging exploration of what looks to be a promising time for women in search of individualized, integrated and informed care during their menopause journey.Mentioned in this episode: https://www.elektrahealth.com/

Age reversal has always been a topic of fascination and desire for many people. We all wish we could halt or even reverse the aging process, but is it merely wishful thinking? In this episode of Your Infinite Health, Dr. Trip  and LeNae Goolsby explore the concept of age reversal and shed light on the remarkable advancements in this field.According to Dr. Trip Goolsby, age reversal is no longer just a myth. With the development of tests that measure the biological shutdown of our DNA, it is now possible to objectively assess the effectiveness of interventions in slowing down or reversing the aging process. What exactly causes aging? Dr. Trip explains that our bodies respond to the toxic environment we create as we age by producing inflammation. This inflammation, while trying to protect our bodies, consumes our energy and interferes with vital reactions for maintaining homeostasis. The result is an environment hostile to cellular survival, leading to the emergence of what are called "zombie cells" – cells that take resources without contributing back. So, is age reversal a possibility? According to Dr. Trip & LeNae Goolsby, it certainly is. By understanding the impact of inflammation and taking steps to optimize health and reduce its effects, we can potentially reverse our biological age. With ongoing research and advancements, age reversal might become a reality for more and more people.Remember, age reversal is not about stopping time or denying the natural process of aging. It's about enhancing our overall well-being and vitality so that we can live our best lives for as long as possible.Dr. Trip Goolsby & LeNae Goolsby are the co-founders of the Infinite Health Integrative Medicine Center, and are also the co-authors of the book “Think and Live Longer”.TakeawaysAge reversal is a real possibility backed by scientific advancements.Inflammation plays a crucial role in aging.Age reversal is about enhancing vitality and well-being.ConnectDr. Trip Goolsby & LeNae Goolsby are the co-founders of the Infinite Health Integrative Medicine Center, and are also the co-authors of the book “Think and Live Longer”.

Today we are joined by Dr. Daniel Keown, author of the ground-breaking book "The Spark in the Machine: How the Science of Acupuncture Explains the Mysteries of Western Medicine" (2014) and more recently “The Uncharted Body” (2019). Dan has been a practicing doctor for over twenty years, and an acupuncturist for more than a decade. In 2010 he studied alongside the renowned Dr. Wang Ju-Yi at the Institute of Channel Diagnosis in Beijing. We discuss the importance of electricity in the health and function of the body, and how the meridian channels correspond to fascial pathways that surgeons routinely use. Dan suggests that dis-ease is fundamentally about dysfunctional qi flow, likening acupuncture to electrical engineering for the body. He explains how channel palpation works in relation to diagnostics and how fascia is the primary tissue allowing electrical movement throughout the body. We discuss how shen - or spirit - is an integral component to the health and happiness of an individual, and perhaps the most important indicator of health. We explore the fascinating connection between embryology and acupuncture, morphogenetic fields, the mystery of how a single cell becomes an entire body and how the six divisions in acupuncture theory serve as embryological planes. Furthermore, we discuss the extraordinary channels and how he views chakras as nerve ganglions, or mini-brains. Dan shares his frustration with the western medical model's reductionism, where he feels it does and doesn't work, and highlights how it excels with emergency medicine. He also shares a controversial viewpoint in which he feels that western medicine is a broken system. Dan envisions a future in which acupuncture is the first line of therapy in healthcare and hospitals worldwide - providing an inexpensive, intelligent, and effective way of supporting people's health and well-being.Dan received a degree in medicine from Manchester University in 1998, and 2008 he completed a degree in Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture from the College of Integrated Medicine affiliated with Kingston University, and has been a member of the British Acupuncture Council since. He practices in Tunbridge Wells, UK and runs an online teaching institute The School of Scientific Oriental Medicine and Acupuncture which he founded in 2015.www.drdankeown.comLiked what you heard? On episode 68 of Outside The Studio: With so many different fad diets to improve brain health, how do we know what is worth trying? Dr. Andrew Newberg and Tessa sit down to discuss the food we consume for our body and brain, stress, as well as how meditation and yoga influence brain health. Dr. Andrew Newberg is a neuroscientist who studies the relationship between brain function and various mental states. He is a pioneer in the neurological study of religious and spiritual experiences, a field known as "neurotheology." He is the author of several books, including Brain Weaver. Timestamps(00:00) Who is Dr. Andrew Newberg? (01:05) What is optimal brain health? (03:30) What is integrated health? (07:15) Think better diet (08:40) How do we know what a good diet is? (13:00) What if I don't like vegetables? (16:15) Macrobiotic diet in relationship to the 2,000 calorie diet (20:20) Is it ever too late to make a difference in our diet or health? (24:00) What's worse? Poor diet or stress? (27:30) Chronic stress on the brain (30:15) Yoga and meditation on the brain (34:15) Minimum amount of time to meditate? (35:30) What is Andrew's meditation routine? (37:15) Why are we here? (41:35) Are we hardwired for religion/spirituality? (44:00) Key takeaways from Andrew's book Key Takeaways 1. Optimal brain health is a balance between the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual aspects of a person's lifestyle, however, there is no one size fits all. Finding harmony for each person is essential and different; the goal is to specialize it for each person's specific needs. 2. Meditation, even thirty seconds of mindfulness, is refreshing for the brain. Practice and repetition have beneficial results, even in those small doses. 3. Integrated medicine and western medicine have substantial overlap. The goal is to not see them as a “versus” but rather as just medicine. Integrated medicine may look at different aspects of an individual while conventional medicine looks at another, but they are meant to be used together. 4. Everyone can work towards optimal brain health. Paying attention to individuals strengths and weaknesses is going to be the best plan for achieving.
