I went to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce ceremony for my pal Carl Weathers. (We wrote a script together were friends for 20 years.) At the ceremony I met some relatives and friends, and told them I might be able to reach out to Carl via our podcast (again.) If one searches his name on this podcast, they'll see the initial interview. But in honor of his family and friends, here's an article that talks about what the ceremony was like: HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES -- Carl Weathers was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week. On Thursday, the actor, known for his role as boxer Apollo Creed in the "Rocky" films as well as his time as an NFL linebacker for the then-Oakland Raiders, was posthumously honored during a ceremony by his dear friends in Hollywood and sports, including Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis, actress Bryce Dallas Howard and actor LeVar Burton. Carl Weathers' sons Matthew Weathers and Jason Weathers, as well as his partner Christine Kludjian, also paid tribute to him in moving speeches. "My father was an individual with dreams and aspirations," Matthew Weathers said in his speech. "He knew what he wanted at a very young age. He told me on numerous occasions that if he had some money in his pocket as a young man, he'd go to the movies." A picture of Carl Weathers, the late actor renowned for his iconic roles in films such as "Rocky," is displayed on his star as he is honored posthumously on the Walk of Fame. A picture of Carl Weathers, the late actor renowned for his iconic roles in films such as "Rocky," is displayed on his star as he is honored posthumously on the Walk of Fame. "Not a lot of people have the opportunity to do what he did," he added of his father's illustrious career. "He was proud of what he created. So am I. It's hard to imagine that he's not here." Jason Weathers echoed his brother's words about their father and said that he's "so proud" of him. "I wish he could be here to experience this," he continued. "I know he was looking forward to this -- over 50 years in Hollywood, in his career, and now to be immortalized with a star is just truly wonderful." Along with the "Rocky" films, Carl Weathers starred in "Happy Gilmore" alongside Adam Sandler, "Predator" with Arnold Schwarzenegger and more. More recently, he played Greef Karga in the Disney+ series "The Mandalorian" and directed several episodes of the show. Howard, who worked as a director on "The Mandalorian" alongside Carl Weathers, called him a "titan of a man." "Carl was not only one of the central stars of 'The Mandalorian,' he was also one of the show's regular directors," she said. "It astonished me how effortlessly he wore both hats. It was truly remarkable to spin both those plates, acting and directing." "Carl did it with grace, ease and enthusiasm," she added. Burton, meanwhile, called Carl Weathers "the embodiment of a good man." "Carl was also an icon," he added. "A legend. Apollo Creed will go down in history as one of the most popular figures in entertainment history and that is due to the charisma and talent of Carl Weathers." Here's the youtube clip with those speeches... https://www.youtube.com/live/QdVMklVyGK0?si=CH5OPTwMgwsK5-DI&t=1589 I share this information as an old friend of Carl's and some family members and I talked about me sharing this interview later on in the day. It's an example of how easy it is to speak to our loved ones offstage. Jennifer is very talented at what she does, and because I knew Carl well, as well as the other questions I ask during this podcast, I know that we're hearing new information from someone offstage. Anyone can. To book a session with Jennifer: JenniferShaffer.com To book a guided meditation with Richard: RichardMartini.com Enjoy the play!
Prince is finally set to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, a recognition he declined twice during his lifetime before his tragic passing on April 21, 2016. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce announced on Tuesday, June 25, that the late singer will be honored posthumously as part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame Class of 2025, alongside other notable figures like Nia Long, Misty Copeland, Fantasia, Jane Fonda, and David Beckham. According to People, Prince had discussed the prospect of a nomination with a Walk of Famer before his death but expressed that he was "not ready" for the honor, as noted by Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez. Jay smothers Weird Al with love and appreciation for Al's perfection in his parody. We talk about Mad Magazine, Looney Tunes, pizza, travel, doing what you want, the power of an orchestra, the two pulls of being a comic vs a musician, how a true showman can come out of Linwood, and giving up architecture for being a professional goofball/genius. Bio: FEW WOULD HAVE GUESSED that “Weird Al” Yankovic – who as a shy, accordion-playing teenager got his start sending in homemade tapes to the Dr. Demento Radio Show– would go on to become a pop culture icon and the biggest-selling comedy recording artist of all time, with classic song and music video parodies such as“Eat It,” “Like a Surgeon,” “Smells Like Nirvana,” “Amish Paradise,” “White & Nerdy” and “Word Crimes.” Now in his fourth decade as America's foremost song parodist, he has been the recipient of numerous awards, including five Grammys® (out of sixteen total nominations) and a string of Gold and Platinum albums. In 2015 and 2016, Weird Al's Mandatory World Tour encompassed 200 shows throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and Australia, including two nights at the Hollywood Bowl and a sold-out gig at New York's Radio City Music Hall. In the spring of 2018, Al performed 77 shows as part of his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour, where he and his bandmates of over 35 years played setlists composed almost entirely of his original (non-parody) material, and without any of their signature over-the-top theatrics (no costumes, props or video screens). And in 2019 Weird Al followed up his most bare-bones tour with his most extravagant tour ever – Strings Attached – where he and his band were backed for each of their 67 shows by female singers and a full symphony orchestra.Weird Al's 14th studio album, the Grammy® award-winning Mandatory Fun (2014), became the first comedy album in history to debut at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart, and the first to even reach the top of that chart since 1963. Yankovic set the U.S. record on Spotify for having the most tracks from one album in the viral top 10 at one time, taking the top four spots. In addition, “Word Crimes” debuted in the Billboard Top 40, making Al one of only four artists to have had Top 40 singles in each of the last four decades (the other three being Michael Jackson, Madonna and U2).Al has remained active as a recording artist. June 2017 saw the release of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie (Dreamworks), for which Al co-wrote and performed the film's theme song. In August 2017, Al wrote and performed “The North Korea Polka (Please Don't Nuke Us)” for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO). In November 2017 Legacy Recordings released Squeeze Box: The Complete Works of “Weird Al” Yankovic, a remastered 15-disc box set (including a rarities album) plus a 120-page book of archival photos, all housed in a replica of Weird Al's trademark accordion. Al also recorded cover versions of the Squidbillies theme for Adult Swim and the Ramones' “Beat on the Brat” for a Dr. Demento compilation album, and produced remixes of two hit singles for Portugal. The Man (“Feel It Still” and “Live in the Moment”). And March 2018 brought us “The Hamilton Polka,” a frantic tour de force mash-up of 14 songs from the Broadway smash, commissioned by Lin-Manuel Miranda himself and released as part of his “Hamildrops” series. In addition to his cult-hit feature film UHF (1989), his late ‘90s CBS Saturday morning series The Weird Al Show and numerous AL-TV specials he has made for MTV and VH1 over the years, Yankovic has remained a staple of film and television, from appearances on The Simpsons, 30 Rock, The Goldbergs and How I Met Your Mother to performing live on the Primetime Emmy Awards and starring in his own concert specials for Disney, VH1 and Comedy Central. In 2015 Yankovic took over as co-host and bandleader for the fifth season of IFC's Comedy Bang! Bang! Currently Al can be heard as the voice of the title character in Disney Channel's animated series Milo Murphy's Law (his other voice acting work includes appearances on Bojack Horseman, Gravity Falls, Adventure Time, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Wander Over Yonder, and the DC animated feature Batman vs. Robin). Yankovic added “New York Times bestselling author” to his resumé in 2011 with the release of his children's book, When I Grow Up (HarperCollins), followed two years later by My New Teacher and Me! An animated series based on his children's books is currently being developed in partnership with the Jim Henson Company. 2012 saw the release of Weird Al: The Book (Abrams), an illustrated hardcover on Al's life and career, and in 2015 Yankovic became not only MAD Magazine's cover boy, but the first guest editor in their 63-year history. In 2017 NECA Toys released the second in its line of retro-clothed Weird Al action figures, and in 2018 Funko released two of its own POP! vinyl figures. On August 27, 2018, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce awarded “Weird Al” Yankovic with the 2,643rd star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“Now I'm making something that I didn't imagine. It's not going like I imagined, but it's going. And then when you finish the Object Thing book, then it has the power to take you on a journey that you never would have dreamt had you kept the idea in your interior museum. And then that shifts your imagination. You have more, more artwork that's collected in the Interior Museum and but, and then as you grow older, as a maker, You see that distinction, right? The distinction between the beautiful interior museum and the museum in reality of things that you've actually made and done and the stories attached to the making and doing that have changed your life.” I am joined today by my dear friend, Alexandra Grant. Alexandra is a fascinating person and talented visual artist whose work examines language and written texts through painting, drawing, sculpture, video, and other media and has been exhibited at institutions across the country: at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), the Pasadena Museum of California Art, among others. In 2008, she created the grantLOVE Project, which has raised awareness and funds for various arts nonprofits through the gift and sale of her iconic LOVE artwork. In 2017, she and her life partner, Keanu Reeves, co-founded X Artists' Books, an artist-centric publishing house, helping artists and readers alike explore the creation of artwork and ideas outside the traditional model of book publishing. If that wasn't enough, Alexandra is currently leading the first NFT project of the Hollywood Sign for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and is an Advisor to the Future Verse Foundation. She joins me today to meditate on art and love—as we celebrate the release of her book Love: A Visual History of the grantLOVE Project. A comprehensive history of the foundation she started fifteen years ago, the book is a visual collection of paintings, prints, sculptures, textiles, jewelry, and architecture gathered by Grant and her collaborators to explore the timeless question, what is love? Our conversation is a peek into our regular walk and talks—a beloved routine through which we have been able to explore, reflect, and build an incredibly meaningful friendship. Today we discuss what it means to be looked at and perceived by the public, especially as the partner of one of the most famous actors of our generation; the inevitable disappointment that results from taking the beautiful ideas in our heads and attempting to turn them into something physical; and owning our native talents in the pursuit of a creative live, whether or not we fit into the conventions of being an artist. You have to create opportunities between the cracks, she tells us. Okay, let's get to our conversation. Vanna White quickly became a household name when she was named Co-Host of “Wheel of Fortune” in 1982. After auditioning alongside over 200 other hopefuls, Merv Griffin ultimately awarded the coveted spot to Vanna because “she turned the letters the best.” Growing up in North Myrtle Beach, S.C., Vanna never dreamed that one day she would be a pop culture icon. After attending the Atlanta School of Fashion Design and becoming one of the area’s top models, she moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. Since her debut on “Wheel of Fortune,” Vanna has appeared in more than 7,000 episodes, revealing letters on the iconic puzzleboard, cheering on contestants, and dazzling in a new outfit every night. For her work on “Wheel of Fortune,” the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored Vanna with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in April 2006. In April 2018, Vanna was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame, along with Host, Pat Sajak; Executive Producer, Harry Friedman; and “Wheel of Fortune” itself. With her success, Vanna has given back to those in need. Combining her passions for crocheting and helping children, she launched her own line of yarn called “Vanna’s Choice,” from which a portion of the proceeds are donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. To date, Vanna has donated over $2 million through “Vanna’s Choice” sales. She also lends her support to other causes wherever she can. Hollywood Boulevard is a global tourist destination, with hundreds of thousands of visitors daily. It's also on the “High Injury Network,” with among the city's highest rates of pedestrian and cyclist injuries and fatalities. In this episode, Adriane Hoff says the new nonprofit org Safe Streets For All wants to "pedestrianize" Hollywood Boulevard from Labrea to Highland Ave. Alexander Totz, LA County Bicycle Coalition's Bike Ambassador to Hollywood, calls Adriane's ask "idealistic, not realistic," but also says closing the street is "only part" of Council Member Mitch O'Farrell's "Heart of Hollywood" initiative (23:17). Adriane says the idea to ban cars from the most crowded parts of Hollywood Boulevard gets overwhelming support from stakeholders, including the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. Culver City’s Pro-Complete Streets Mayor Meghan Sahli-Wells weighs in as favoring pedestrianizing Hollywood Blvd, as does Maureen Persico, originator of "people protected bike lanes." Maureen credits her direct action as at least partly responsible for giving SF a carfree Market Street(Maureen starts at 55:00). Moderated by Midnight Ridazz original group rider and bike infrastructure advocate Don "Roadblock" Ward, with Bike Talk producer/cohost Nick Richert.
