HOO BOY this week Roman historians Dr. Sarah Bond and Dr. Bret Deveraux drop in to talk about Ridley Scott's ode to his first film, uh, ancient Rome, Gladiator II. We talk about the legacy of the first film, our impressions of the new release, and the actual history behind Gladiator II. This discussion is pretty epic. Stay tuned and subscribe.About our guests:Dr. Sarah E. Bond is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Iowa. She is interested in late Roman history, epigraphy, late antique law, Roman topography and GIS, Digital Humanities, and the socio-legal experience of ancient marginal peoples. She earned a PhD in History from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (2011) and obtained a BA in Classics and History with a minor in Classical Archaeology from the University of Virginia (2005). Her book, Trade and Taboo: Disreputable Professionals in the Roman Mediterranean, was published with the University of Michigan Press in 2016. Follow her blog: History From Below.Additionally, Bond is a regular contributor at Hyperallergic, a columnist at the Los Angeles Review of Books, and a section editor at Public Books. She has written for The New York Times, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and The Washington Post.  Bond's latest book, Strike: Labor, Unions, and Resistance in the Roman Empire will be out on February 4, 2025. It is available for preorder here: https://yalebooks.yale.edu/book/9780300273144/strike/Dr. Bret C. Devereaux is an ancient and military historian who currently teaches as a Teaching Assistant Professor at North Carolina State University. He has his PhD in ancient history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his MA in classical civilizations from Florida State University.Bret is a historian of the broader ancient Mediterranean in general and of ancient Rome in particular. His primary research interests sit at the intersections of the Roman economy and the Roman military, examining the ways that the lives of ordinary people in the ancient world were shaped by the structures of power, violence and wealth under which they lived and the ways in which they in turn shaped the military capacity of the states in which they lived (which is simply a fancy way of saying he is interested in how the big picture of wars, economic shifts and politics impacted the ‘little' folks and vice versa). More broadly he is interested in many of the nuts-and-bolts of everyday life in the ancient world, things like the production of textiles, the economics of small farming households, and the burden of military service. He is also a lifetime fan of fantasy, science fiction and speculative fiction more generally. Bret enjoys good music, bad jokes and writing about himself in the third person. He is also required, by law and ancient custom, to inform absolutely everyone that he has, in fact, beaten Dark Souls (and now also Elden Ring).

Ah, the very last episode of this season! We start to get into the lush world of Arthur Conan Doyle's most popular (non-sherlock) writing, and discover that HOO BOY does that professor have some feelings on the matter of the people he met and the places he went. Well, that, and he really doesn't care for the press. He just wants to be right and have people know he's right, without all the fuss of proving it. Sounds like he'd fit right in on the internet, howsabout we get this guy a podcast, huh? I mean, a radio show would be more appropriate to the time, setting, and theme, but I'd love to see such oddities that an anachronistic old fogey like this would cause!  Additionally of note, this month's episodes are the last ones of season 2, and as we come to season 3, starting in May, we'll be having a different release schedule! That's right, we're finally shifting to weekly episodes, much to the joy of everyone who didn't have time for multiple 3 to 4 hour journeys dropping all at once at the end of the month! No more having to ration out episodes of your favorite books to tide you over, I'll be spreading things out manually! Isn't that exciting? I don't think the disclaimer came up this time, but here it is anyway:  TL;DR up front: Paper Cuts is almost all public domain stuff, and some of it hasn't aged well. I'll be doing my best to warn you, but I'm not changing any of it, I don't believe censorship is the path forward here. Paper Cuts, by necessity, has to be a majority books that are in the US public domain. That means it's almost exclusively going to be content produced in the 1920s, or earlier. These works may have aspects that have not aged well to a modern viewer/listener. Now, I'm never one for censorship, but I do believe we are entitled to being able to filter the leisure content we don't want to see. So, this results in the following policy: I'll do my level best to warn you, the viewer, at the beginning of the episode, what's likely to come up. A great example is something like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which had some passages describing natives of various places in a fashion I'd charitably describe as unkindly. In cases where something sneaks up on me unwarned, I will be reading the content unedited, with my sincerest apologies for the lack of active warning. All that said, I'm gonna cover my bases with some common warnings that have come up often in books I've read before: Descriptions of "savage natives" Various racial slurs, unkind terms, and/or Descriptions of groups that have taken on a worse connotation General mistreatment and misrepresentation of cultures Generally speaking, if something I'm reading is on the page? Don't expect me to have opinions aligning with it. We're here to have fun, not disparage people! Want to grab the book to read along with us? check it out here, free of charge! https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/139 (The Lost World) Have a book to request? Maybe some chats to chit? Actress Juliet Cowan is our guest this week, and Hoo Boy, this week's episode has it all, from gaslighting French pen pals (aged 12), to sisterly love rivalry, via far too long spent lusting over discussing Top Trade Union Totty Mick Lynch. It's lovely and mad, and very relatable content.  Especially if you fancy Mick Lynch, but honestly - even if you don't.  But why wouldn't you?  He's a fine man. SSS duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and current downtown Chicago correspondent, Will, were just settling in for their first podcast of the regular season when the White Sox announced that Eloy Jiménez is headed to the IL with a theoretically minor hamstring issue. Not good. On the good side, the praise is for the Cuban contingent, especially Luis Robert Jr.'s incredible fielding and Yoán Moncada's hot start at the plate, with plenty left over for the start of Oscar Colás' White Sox career and the (at least temporary) resurgence of Yasmani Grandal's bat, if not his defense. Further praise goes to Dylan Cease for his great first start (the podcast was recorded before No. 2), with reserved kudos for the other starting pitchers in Houston, who took a whole lot of pitches to get through a depleted Astros lineup, with FIP showing Lance Lynn and the new guy getting a whole lot of luck and Lucas Giolito getting ill-treated by fortune. That, of course, doesn't include whatever happened to Michael Kopech on Monday, which both agreed could not just have been a matter of pitch-tipping. As for the bullpen and its 9.90 ERA, both agreed the best reliever far and away in the young season has been Hanser Alberto, though Will disagreed that Hanser should be handed the closer's job, at least until Liam Hendriks is back. The other day, I posted this to Facebook: Almost 10 years ago I gave up drinking alcohol and I had this feeling that “Yes! Finally! This is the answer!!” A few years later, I went 100% vegan and lost 100 lbs and I thought: “This! This is what I've needed all along!” A few years later, I discovered mindfulness and compassion practices, and I knew “This is it! NOW it all makes sense!” A few months ago, for the first time, I recognized my trauma. And I sat down and said “Hoo Boy.” In today's episode, I unpack these statements and talk about the deeper meanings: If you believe you can't accomplish any of these things; if you believe what you might have gone through as a child wasn't ‘really' traumatizing or abusive, I beg for the opportunity to help you arrive at a deeper understanding. Hoo Boy. First of all, I want to thank Bert for commissioning the finale of Dark so that I was able to avoid further confusion and watch it quickly following the penultimate episode so that I wasn't too too lost. That said, I am so angry throughout this episode that confusion turned out to be, in retrospect, something I needn't have worried about. This will go down in my mental Hall Of Shame as one of the most disappointing finales I've ever seen. There are so many plot points that are simply dropped and never brought up again! I name my issues with the episode itself on the podcast, but to list some things that I thought would be meaningful and seemed to not be:Adam's cult. Who were they and where did they go? There was a whole thing in the first season with a giant back tattoo and a cult-like following of strangers, but absolutely nothing comes of that. It seems like we've retconned that all his followers were actually members of the Knot. Really? So where's he getting his funding and support from if everyone here is from a different time? Why did anyone listen to him, and why did they stop? Claussen. Wow I guess he was just...fucking NOTHING. He was only the guy who gets the barrels open. Lame. Aleksander. So apparently him being a murderer on the run just...didn't matter. I really can't see any way that it served the plot. I can't think of any events that stemmed from Hannah blackmailing him, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. Why did we spend so much time on this? WHY DOES ADAM THINK KILLING THE ORIGIN WILL FIX THINGS I DO NOT GET ITAre we totally confident that nothing bad enough will happen in the future to cause Tannhaus to build this machine again anyway?ugh whatever I'm annoyed

WE STAND BY THESE LIFE CHOICES Anyway, we've finally hit the S1 finale and HOO BOY it's a ride, fam! Up on the Ark, Batshit Jaha is rising, Kane and Abby are nonstop badasses, Jackson is at Peak Cinnamon Roll, Wells and Jake save the day one last time, and SINCLAIR JUST WANTS TO GO HOME. Down on the ground, Bellamy deserves snuggles but instead receives only struggles, Murphy's red seatbelt kink comes back into play, the Blakes are at peak Battle Siblings, and Jasper and Raven save the day. Meanwhile, Clarke and Finn get a whole sideplot whose entire function is to creepily foreshadow all the crazy of Season 2, from Reapers and blood-drained corpse piles to the first mention of the Commander. P.S. to make sure we got y'all some new content in time for your holiday travels, we posted this one completely unedited. A HUGE amount of work from our Editkru volunteers goes into producing each podcast episode, from filtering out coughs and background noises to slicing out the torrents of "um" and "like" to cleaning up when we talk over each other, which happens a lot. So if you find this one occasionally a hot mess to listen to, shout-outs go to Brittany, Cece, Emily, Jess, Maylina and Melli for making sure the rest of our podcasts are shiny and cleaned up when we post them. They work their asses off and we adore them with our entire hearts. --------------------------------- 0:00 - HI WE’RE BACK AND THIS IS UNEDITED, MAY GOD HAVE MERCY ON OUR SOULS 0:02 - In Which Kane Sits Alone at Jaha’s Council Table Like a Kid Who Got Called to the Principal’s Office 0:05 - TEAM ADULTS RISE: The Optimists, the Pessimists, and the Rise of Batshit Jaha 0:20 - Nanorobots In the Whiskey: An ALIE Conspiracy Theory 0:26 - Hey Let’s Go Get Our Hearts Shattered In the O.R. by Battle Mom Abby Griffin and ACTUAL ANGEL Eric Jackson 0:32 - Clarke and Finn Are Here to Drop Off That Truckload of Season Two Plot Setup You Ordered 0:35 - Today on “Grounder Thoughts With Clairin”: Anya’s In the Doghouse, We Never Got the Lincoln/Lexa Confrontation We Longed For, and Why TF Does Luna Get a Regular-Ass Ambassador If Her Clan’s Whole Deal Is “Fuck This Governmental Structure” 0:52 - Bellamy Blake and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day 0:56 - YO WE STILL DON’T KNOW WHERE MONTY IS!!!! 1:02 - Sooooooo Many Blake Sibling Feels 1:06 - "We Save Who We Can Save Today": Bellamy and Jasper's Relationship Has Come a Long Way, Baby 1:13 - In Which Erin Asks the Very Reasonable Question About Why Key Character Evolution Moments for Bellamy So Often Involve Physical Punishment 1:15 - Claire's Grand Unified Murphy/Sawyer Theory: The Perils of Scapegoating 1:23 - Not That It Excuses Anything, But Jesus Murphy's Backstory Is Fucking Tragic 1:28 - Raven, Braven and Bravenlarke Are All Lit AF In Both Parts of This Finale 1:35 - Goodbye, Happy Holidays, We'll See You In 2018 With the S1 Finale and At Least One Secret Meta Station Surprise We're Cooking Up!

Cody is joined by comic and host of OUTCHICAGO Scott Duff and comedian and returning champion Casey Larwood to finally deal with our inner, outer, and inbetweener demons. Learn how to butch up your son so he'll stop having those girly "feelings" and also one chapter about your daughter who you don't make eye contact with anyway because of Eve. You can find the book on Amazon and on the bookshelf of that friend of yours from high school who always wanted kids but didn't really know what that meant, they just viewed it as a societal pressure and a cute accessory. You know, like a mortgage puppy or an office job handbag. 'A Parents Guide to Preventing Homosexuality' by Joseph Nicolosi, PhD {& Linda Ames Nicolosi}   Homosexuality. Is it learned, biological…or both?   The answer to this question deeply concerns parents. They want to know how they can best raise their children. Many would have us believe that nothing can be done to foster the development of healthy gender identity and heterosexual orientation in children. But the clinical experience of Dr. Nicolosi and others, along with a careful look at the professional literature, indicates otherwise. For anyone growing weary of the constant focus on Russian and President Donald Trump's campaign, good news! A fresh horror took the spotlight late last week in the form of WannaCry, a vicious ransomware whose creators appear not to have been all that smart. WannaCry, we learned, features a built-in "kill switch" that security researchers have used to, well, kill it, at least for now. Some people on XP and Windows 7 might even be able to get their files back.
