On this week's episode of Excelsior Journeys: The Road to Creativity, host & producer George Sirois sits down with fellow author Andrew Serra. While the two share a passion for storytelling, Andrew's journey to get into writing is a far different, much more eventful path. Andrew has been a lover of storytelling for most of his life, but he has also lived most of that life in one of the greatest collection of heroes in this country: the New York Fire Department. After being on the NYFD for over twenty-five years, eventually retiring as the Captain of Ladder 20 in SoHo, Andrew fed his love of writing in the Historical Fiction genre and also wrote the 9/11 memoir Finding John. To find out more about Andrew, including his historical fiction debut "Hell's Hundred Acres," click HERE.Excelsior Journeys: The Road to Creativity exists primarily as a platform for creatives of all kinds (authors, filmmakers, stand-up comics, musicians, voice artists, painters, podcasters, etc) to share their journeys to personal success. It is very important to celebrate those voices as much as possible to not only provide encouragement to up-and-coming talent, but to say thank you to the established men & women for inspiring the current generation of artists. If you agree that the Excelsior Journeys podcast serves a positive purpose and would like to show your appreciation, you can give back to the show by clicking HERE.

Lindsay is joined by author Andrew Serra to discuss his book, “Hell's Hundred Acres” about the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. March 25, 1911. Hundreds of seamstresses are hard at work on the upper floors of a ten-story factory loft. The workday ends and Esther Greenberg stands from her sewing machine and heads for the stairs, looking forward to her plans for that Saturday evening. “Fire!” someone shouts, and Esther sees smoke outside the windows. The building is ablaze and she's trapped nine stories up.Charlie Pendergrass has learned a great deal since becoming a fireman—about the job and himself. But he must decide what kind of future he wants, and he just might lose it all to the flames. From the irascible fire chief Edward Croker to the ruthless business magnate Max Blanck, Hell's Hundred Acres is the richly detailed story of the disparate lives that intersected at one of the deadliest tragedies in New York City history—the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. This week, I sit down with one of the spookiest ones around town, Spencer Dillman. I met Spencer back in 2020, when I reached out to Hundred Acres Manor to see about interviewing someone from the Haunt! At that time, Spencer was a scare actor who worked as one of their makeup artists! As soon as I seen his work, I knew I had to have him on! - In 2019, Spencer took a backseat to scaring and helps handle the makeup and production. Hundred Acres Manor's team is filled with talented people who work their asses off every night to keep their ghouls and the Haunt looking right! Over 80 scare actors haunt the grounds of Hundred Acres Manor's and this week learn about everything from what training each cast member goes through to how you do makeup for a haunt full of actors each night. A fascinating conversation about the inner workings of Haunted House for the Halloween enthusiast! - When October ends and you can't find Spencer doing spooky makeup or scaring people at the Haunt, you can find him “snatching” hair in his salon Chariot And Vine. What does the myth of American “chosenness” mean for different communities and the rise of Christian nationalism? Episcopal Bishop and Cherokee nation member Carol Gallagher, Baptist minister Rev. Darrell Hamilton, and Dr. Michael Hoberman, a scholar of early American Jewish literature and culture, engage in a conversation moderated by the Rev. Dr. Jaimie Crumley, a minister and professor of gender studies and ethnic studies. Dr. Catherine Brekus of Harvard Divinity School joins them, too, as they react to her lecture about how the myth of “chosenness” leads to much of the religious nationalism in our country today, including how scriptures were used to justify colonialism. Picture the neighborhood of SoHo (that’s right, "South of Houston") in your head today, and you might get a headache. Crowded sidewalks on the weekend, filled with tourists, shoppers and vendors, could almost distract you from SoHo’s unique appeal as a place of extraordinary architecture and history. On this podcast we present the story of how a portion of “Hell’s Hundred Acres” became one of the most famously trendy places in the world. In the mid 19th century this area, centered along Broadway, became the heart of retail and entertainment, department stores and hotels setting up shop in grand palaces. (It also became New York’s most notorious brothel district). The streets between Houston and Canal became known as the Cast Iron District, thanks to an exciting construction innovation that transformed the Gilded Age. Today SoHo contains the world’s greatest surviving collection of cast-iron architecture. But these gorgeous iron tributes to New York industry were nearly destroyed – first by rampant fires, then by Robert Moses. Community activists saved these buildings, and just in time for artists to move into their spacious loft spaces in the 1960s and 70s. The artists are still there of course but these once-desolate cobblestone streets have almost unrecognizably changed, perhaps a victim of its own success. Support the show.

This week on The Line, host Eli Sussman is joined by Ayesha Nurdjaja, the executive chef at Hundred Acres, Vicki Freeman and Marc Meyer's farm-to-table restaurant in New York City's SoHo neighborhood, where she serves a newly revamped menu of enticing Mediterranean dishes that highlight local, seasonal ingredients. Born and raised in Brooklyn, Ayesha is the daughter of an Indonesian father and Italian mother. Growing up, she was always inspired by her father's cooking and his use of exotic flavors, but her entrepreneurial spirit first led her to pursue a business degree at Pace University. After graduating in 2000, she realized that food is where her true passion lies, so she enrolled at the Institute of Culinary Education. Ayesha graduated from culinary school in 2006 and, after watching chef Lidia Bastianich cook on PBS, walked into Lidia's restaurant, Felidia, and asked for a job. They brought her on as a line cook and she worked her way up the ranks to become sous chef. Since then, Ayesha has helped lead the kitchen teams at Bar Artisanal and Michelin-starred Picholine under chef Terrance Brennan, and at Michelin-starred A Voce under chef Missy Robbins. She also spent time as executive chef at Il Bordello and most recently at Brooklyn neighborhood favorite Red Gravy, where for three years she offered her take on modern southern Italian cuisine. In 2015, Ayesha met with restaurateurs Vicki Freeman and Marc Meyer, who were looking for a new chef at their restaurant Hundred Acres. Ayesha was drawn to their passion for creating a welcoming place with honest cooking and they hit it off immediately. At Hundred Acres, her new menu draws on the rustic, vibrant flavors found throughout Italy, Morocco and Tunisia.
